Just A Couple Of Short Snippets … 🥱

Today I managed to fold a load of laundry, rinse a container of raspberries, chop cabbage for coleslaw, and tidy the kitchen.  That said, I might have done more than my body wished, for tonight I am a bit shaky and very tired, so this will be a short post with only a few very short snippets.  Hopefully I can do better tomorrow!

The headline in The Washington Post read: “The demise of BBB comes at a dark moment for Democrats”.  But that is wrong … it is not only a dark moment for Democrats, but rather for every man, woman and child in the U.S. who doesn’t have the benefit of being wealthy.  Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia single-handedly killed a bill that would have helped millions of people in the coming year, many of whom live in his own state, the second poorest state in the U.S. with a poverty rate of nearly 20%.  Not only that, but the bill would have made significant progress in the fight against the forces that are destroying our environment and given future generations the chance to continue living and breathing on Planet Earth!  Manchin is now among the top candidates running for the ‘Asshole of the Year’ award.

In Williamson County, Tennessee, a chapter of Moms For Liberty, a right-wing dark money group, filed a complaint with the Tennessee Department of Education. The complaint alleges that the language arts curriculum for second graders in Williamson County school violates the law banning Critical Race Theory.

Specifically, Moms For Liberty objected to the inclusion several books, including Martin Luther King, Jr. and the March on Washington, and Ruby Bridges Goes to School, an autobiography of the first Black child to integrate a New Orleans school, adapted for young readers.

Seriously???

The group claims that the inclusion of these books “reveals a heavily biased agenda, one that makes children hate their country, each other, and/or themselves.”  Horse hockey!!!  Facts is facts, folks, and maybe these parents actually realize their own guilt in America’s racist past and want to hide it from their children, want to head off any questions their kids might ask about their parent’s views and behaviour during that time.  Facts is facts, whether these lily-white ‘moms’ choose to acknowledge it or not.

If we don’t teach our children the truth about our past, how will they know not to repeat the same mistakes?  If there is hope for this nation to come out of the dark ages of collective ignorance and bigotry we have descended into, it lies in the education of our children.  We cannot lie, re-write history, or cover up the dark parts of the nation’s past, for those dark parts are just as much a part of who and what we are today as the shining parts are.

And I conclude with a short video by Parody Project by Don Caron …

  1. everything the president says is an absolute lie. The CBO even said that this build bullshit bill would cost trillions and the president thinks that people are stupid enough that they’ll fall for the lie that it’s already paid for?
70% of people, let me repeat that for you, 70% of Americans support Joe mansion which means that it’s a minority of people who want this to pass. Last time I did math, 70% was a much larger percentage than 30%.

    • Hey Scott … I have a suggestion … no, actually more of a request for you. Why not just stop reading my blog, since you only read it in order to find something to argue about. I’m not well and don’t have the time nor the energy to keep arguing with someone who is so biased and cannot even bother to look at facts.

  2. I would remind Senator Manchin of a few words that Dwight D. Eisenhower spoke during his 1st Inaugural Address in Jan. of 1953 : “…we the people, elect leaders not to rule but to serve.” To the “Moms for Liberty” : “Equality is the soul of liberty; there is, in fact, no liberty without it.” – Frances (Fanny) Wright. Your Snippets of Snark are a welcome addition to the inbox, just remember to pace yourself in ALL of the activities of daily living…this includes time spent on the blog! WHAK!! Thank-you!

    • I love those words by Eisenhower and it is something that our current crop of politicians have long since forgotten! And Frances Wright … well, she is spot on and most people in this country today have re-defined the word ‘liberty’ to mean whatever they want it to mean, including infecting others with COVID because they think they have a right … a RIGHT, mind you … to go maskless and refuse the vaccine. Grrrrrrrrrrr. That ain’t liberty, that’s stupidity!

Pacing myself is a struggle … my mind wants to do so much more than my body will let it. Sigh. But, I’m trying. WHAK!!!

  4. 1. The senator in question…Apparently “In Manchin’s financial disclosure for 2020, he reported that his non-public shares of Enersystems were worth between $1 million and $5 million and that between 2011 and 2020 he was paid $5,211,154 in dividend income from them. In 2020, he received over $500,000 in dividends. Enersystems is 71% of Manchin’s investment income and 30% of his net worth.”. This person is in an expert on the need for a Minimum Wage? I am sure he hates hypocrisy in politics too, but in his own case has extenuating circumstances.
    2. Always be wary of groups which include the word ‘Liberty’ in their title; the only Liberties they are concerned about are their own entitlements.

    • I knew he had a financial stake, a monetary monkey in this circus, but I wasn’t aware of the extent of it! Thanks for doing the research, Roger! ‘Splains a lot, doesn’t it? And yep, you’re so right about groups who parade the word “Liberty” … they mean, for example, their own liberty to infect the entire world as they refuse to wear masks or be vaccinated … sigh. I still think a leper colony type setup for the anti-vaxxers is a reasonable idea.

  5. oh the poor baby progressives. do they need a nap after such an energy expending tantrum?
Everyone knows that the build back broke bill benefits billionairs, just look at the crap in there.

    • Perhaps Manchin has future aspirations to run on the Republican ticket? Now that progressives consider him a DINO, will he sabotage Biden’s administration for spite?
It seems the GOP are en route to recapture both houses during midterm elections, i suspect Manchin jumping ship to the “winning” side. Politics make for stranger bedfellows.

      • My personal opinion is Manchin wants the White House, and he thinks he can get it by turning Biden’s administration into a bunch of mumbling numbskulls. He might get there, if he switches to the Republican party. He will NEVER get there as a Democrat, and I cannot imagine how he thinks he can.

        • Oh let him … he’s blown any chance he ever might have had …. and it was always a slim chance, for he was largely an unknown until recently … by depriving his own constituency of assistance they desperately need. But he won’t switch sides … at least, I don’t think he will … for he can do more harm from within.

            • 🤷 Who knows? I don’t even know that he wants to run for president, for I’ve not heard him say so. The ridiculous Ted Cruz, however, is convinced he will be the 2024 GOP nominee, and frankly I can think of only one more buffoonish, unqualified Republican than Cruz. Sigh … the whole lot of them are arseholes, idiots, and buffoons!

              • 99% of all politicians secretly want to win the highest office available to them. Some learn quickly they don’t have what it takes. Most refuse to accept their fate. Go up to almost any politician and say you are interested in helping them attain “that office” and they will ask you what they have to do for you. (Of course, it helps if you have some kind of visible power, lol.)
But that isn’t the point. He wants to be seen as “his own man, one with the strength to go his own way.”
Instead he is showing he does not care for his constituents. But how many truly do?

                • He’s making no friends within his own state, either. I read tonight that the nation’s largest coal miner’s union, UMWA, is asking him to please vote yes on the BBB. That union has been working toward re-training miners to work in the renewable energy industry, for even they can see that coal is on its deathbed. And, Manchin is deliberately hurting the very people whose votes he will want in 2024 when he comes up for re-election. Perhaps he can live off the millions he has made from his investments in coal companies, for his political career is likely nearing its natural end.

Two points on case. The other day Jason Kenney announced that all companies should either not have xmas parties, or should cut down the number of attendees to half the seating capacity of the venue where they are holding the party. Two and a half hours later his own party held their annual xmas party at full capacity. Premier Kenney sees no problem with that.
Today this same person made a comment about Covid, though I do not have his exact words, saying that somehow the Chinese, particularly those from Wuhan, are the ones responsible for spreading Covid across the world, or for not stopping it in its tracks, or something like that. Racial violence has more than doubled since the start of Covid, in particular, racist acts against Asians. He does not think his words will have any effect on how his constituents, including the many red necks who voted for him, will suddenly make more people physically or verbally attack Asians.
The Official Opposition is speaking out against both points above, but to him it is water under the bridge. “I meant nothing by it!” If not, it is only because he is too stupid to believe his words can have consequences!

                    • I’ve long thought that Jason Kenney was a version of Trump, and this latest reinforces that notion. We have had the same problem of racist attacks on those of Asian descent here and it is shameful. Bigots, however, will seize on any excuse, no matter how lame, to hate any and all who are in some way different. Sigh. The human species is deeply flawed and while I once thought we could overcome those flaws and change humanity, I no longer think so. Sigh.

      • I truly believe that Manchin has sunk his own boat, since his own constituents stood to gain from the BBB bill that he ripped from them. I doubt Manchin will switch sides, for he can do more harm from within than from the other side.

  6. Jill, I am glad you are doing more things. Hopefully, it is a good tired feeling of achievement, but d listen to your body. As for Senator Manchin, I encourage folks to call him and ask him to find a way to get a deal done. This bill will help West Virginians and all Americans, so get something done. I did take some encouragement that the Coal Union is pushing him to get something done.

When I called him, I also acknowledge the debt and deficit, so I understand his point. But, what is troubling and I left this in my message is both Republicans and Democrats are to blame for our debt, so we do need to be smart about increasing it and find ways on how to reduce it. My old party makes a big deal about the debt when not in the White House, but they have contributed greatly to it over the years with easy to sell tax cuts, unfunded wars, and corporate welfare programs. The Dems have done their share as well. Keith

    • Thank you, Keith! I have overdone a couple of days recently, but I’m so tired of feeling useless, feeling like a burden. Sigh.

You are so right … I didn’t call Manchin, but I did email him … a relatively calm email considering how incensed I was! At the end of the day, it is the people of West Virginia he will answer to and given that it is the 2nd poorest state in the nation, I cannot imagine they are applauding his behaviour.

It is true that the debt and deficit are problems that must ultimately be addressed, however that didn’t stop Congress from passing a $768 billion defense bill … the little boys like their violent toys far more than they care about such things as taking care of the environment and of people.

  7. Manchin may be a horse’s ass, but no horse’s ass should ever be disrespected as a trophy for “ASSHOLE OF THE YEAR”! Horses are honourable beings. A human ass is what is called for. Any other being is an insult!
Similarly, there is a female body part that should go on a trophy for the Moms For Liberty, as they are definitely a bunch of —-‘s!
