Things That Go Bump In The Night

I’ve heard it said that as one nears the end of this life, one becomes more introspective.  I believe that is true … it has been the cause of many a sleepless night of late.  While I’m not as brave as I once was, I am in many ways more courageous.  Yes, there is a difference between the two.  I used to be brave in the most foolhardy of ways … tempting fate, afraid of neither man nor beast.  Today, I am afraid of such things as driving the car more than a mile to the grocery store.  I was thinking the other night about some of the jobs I’ve had … why, I wouldn’t have the chutzpah to even apply for most of them today!  I’ve faced angry men pointing a gun at me, car wrecks, hurricanes … and never really felt afraid.  But today, though I may not be as brave as I once was, I have courage … a totally different thing.

I have the courage to say to Vladimir Putin when he threatens us with annihilation if we continue to help Ukraine, “F*CK YOU, Vlad!  You do not rule the world, you have no right to tell the United States to whom it can provide assistance, whether weapons, food, medical supplies, or whatever.”  I am not afraid of what Vladimir Putin can do to the United States, but rather am angry over his veiled threats. I think the reason for my ability to spit in Putin’s face is that the people of the United States are doing far more harm from within than Putin or Kim Jong-un or Xi Jinping can possibly do.  And that, my friends, is the bane of my existence, the thing that keeps me awake until daybreak most nights, the thing that makes me glad to be at the end of life rather than at the beginning.  The people of this nation … nay, of the world … seem not to give a damn about anyone but themselves.

But then I remember that even after I’m gone, many people I care a great deal about will be left to face this not-so-brave new world, the world where hatred and violence seem to be valued far more than love and peace.  A world where guns matter more than people, where religion has largely become a farce that would be better suited to a Broadway stage than a church.  Many people blame the former guy for the current state of the U.S., but I contend he is but a symptom, for the loons were out spewing their hatred long before he entered the picture.  He was their tool, their hope to inject their toxic bile into the lives of everyone in this nation.  Remember that although he lost the election by nearly 3 million votes, some 62,984,828 people did actually cast a vote for a madman with no relevant education, no government experience, a bloated ego, no humanitarianism, no compassion, no moral compass, and very little common sense.  Nearly sixty-three million people were so ensconced in their bigotry, their hatred of ‘other’, their desire to turn this nation into something ugly, that they were willing to hand over the reins of power to a madman largely because he shared their bigotry.

Why does someone have to have the same skin colour as you do in order for you to call him ‘friend’?  Why must everyone believe in the same religious rites and rituals, the same deity as you before you can tolerate them?  It would be like me saying that if you don’t like peanut butter (nature’s most perfect food!) then I cannot be friends with you and thus I must dominate you!  C’mon, people!  Remember that we are ALL equal inhabitants of this planet, which brings me to another source of my sleeplessness …

We are knowingly, consciously, and deliberately destroying our home.  Make no mistake … the planet has put up with a lot from us humans, but it is telling us in many ways that it’s done with us, that if we don’t change our ways, it will evict us.  Ask yourself this … would you still drive that gas-guzzling SUV or keep your thermostat at a cool 70° all summer if you knew … knew that doing so would mean your grandchildren would die a slow, painful death in 20-30 years?  Would you still support the fossil fuel industry, eat beef & pork, and fly to the opposite coast for a vacation or a wedding if you knew that by the end of this century, humans would be dying for a lack of potable water, food, and even air to breathe?  Apparently, as I look around, the answer to that question is “yes, live for today and to hell with tomorrow.”

I am sick and tired of the new definitions given to words and used as rhetoric to monger hatred between groups of people.  You know the words I mean – words like ‘woke’ and ‘grooming’ that are slung like hash intended to insult and offend.  I’m sick and damn tired of all the name-calling and mud-slinging against anyone who doesn’t agree with someone else.  I’m sick and tired of people who value a dollar more than a life.  I’m sick and tired of every single thing having to be a divisive political issue.  It’s almost become impossible to even say “Good morning” to someone without it starting an argument!  I’ve heard it said that if one thing or another happens, it will cause a new civil war.  Personally, I think this nation is already engaged in civil war on many fronts:  political, racial, religious, wealth vs poverty, etc.

Yesterday, I heard that J.D. Vance, the author of a single book who is now running to replace Senator Rob Portman next year, said that childless people should not be allowed to vote, and that people with children should be given one vote for each child they produce.  This, my friends, is an extreme, but apt example of the lunacy that is devouring this country.  It is heartbreaking to watch a nation that I was once glad to have been born in devolve to this point.  It is infuriating to watch people who seemingly take pride in their ignorance choose the side of hatred and division.  It is gut-wrenching to know that this is the world I’m leaving to my daughter and granddaughter.

So yes, today I have courage that I didn’t have when I was young and foolish.  I have the courage to think for myself and to say what I think.  I have the courage to go against the flow, to call out evil when and where I see it, to do my part to protect the future for our children and grandchildren and to demand that others do the same.  Too bad I didn’t find that courage when I was younger – I might have been able to make a difference.

  1. A fascinating (and empty, shallow) proposal by a Vance, a Republican, to allow ‘only people with children’ to have a vote. Hmmm…thought the white population was declining in the U.S., innit? So, then, hmmm…if the GOP is trying to appeal to WHITE voters…hmmm…there seems to be a weak link in Vance’s thinking. If only I could put my finger on it…

Suffice to say, Vance, demonstrating this sort of stupid and racist (and anti-democratic) thinking clearly shows he a) belongs in the GOP, b) lacks the intelligence and compassion to be in any elected position, and c) must have people who dress him in the morning.

    Hugs and cheers, M

    • Vance is, from everything I’ve seen, a very shallow, narrow-minded individual with absolutely zero conscience. He spoke loudly against Trump at one point, but then saw the way the wind blew and did a 180° turnaround. But yes, his idea has no thought behind it and would never fly, even among members of his own party, but just the fact that he even thinks such nonsense should end his political career. But then … many, many things should have ended other political careers and haven’t, so … what kind of predictive skills do I have? Sigh. Beam me up, Scotty!

Your three points are spot on … he is a typical (these days) Republican, lacks intelligence, and I have no doubt somebody has to tell him which way to put his pants on! And yet, he could gain a seat in the U.S. Senate … makes me feel nauseous just thinking about it!

Hugs and cheers to you, dear friend!

  2. You said exactly how I feel. But I have found lately (and you’re not going to like this), that I’m starting to care less. It’s like I’m worn out and since I am older, I want to enjoy the time I have left and not dwell on all this. I still follow a few blogs, get a few newsletters, but not all on politics. I’m on Facebook, but I’m weary of that too. I have a home and a garden I love and friends and a simple life. That’s enough for me.

So I’m trying to look at the long deep time picture of all this to get a proper perspective, not just this present moment.

Just look at the history of man. It’s always been like this. Greed, corruption, lust for power and control and the masses of the people, wherever they are, has never mattered. Ignorance, stupidity, fear and hate have always been entrench in the masses. And the conmen, be they religious, political or big business, have always controlled them by keeping them uninformed and uneducated. It’s a chess game where the little pieces mean nothing..it’s the check and checkmate that rule.

Someday whether it’s through nuclear war, extreme virus, asteroid, climate change or just plain time, it will all end. We are are just one insignificant planet in an average galaxy of zillions and we will not be missed or noticed.

I don’t feel I’m pessimistic just a realist. And don’t let this ruin your health. I know you care deeply and that’s a good thing, but time is short for all of us and we all deserve a wider view for peace of mind…
    Just my two cents….

    • Mary, overall, I pretty much agree with everything you wrote. it seems the world is, as they say, going to hell in a handbasket — and it can get very depressing to watch it happen. For me (and probably for Jill as well) blogging helps to get the frustration and anger … and sadness … out of my system. At least for awhile. (Unfortunately, I’m not much of a gardener … although I do enjoy pulling weeds!)

    • Hey Mary! It’s not for me to like or dislike your feelings. I’ve long said that we can judge people’s actions, but feelings just … ARE. They are what they are, and it’s rare that we can control our feelings. I do understand, for I have a number of friends who have said the same … that they just can’t care as much anymore. I’m the opposite, but we’re all different and I surely do not judge anyone for how they feel.

I guess my own thoughts are that I keep hoping I can somehow make a difference, even if only in the lives of a few people. I have a deep desire to leave this world, or a small piece of it, a little better than when I came into it. So, I keep on fighting against those things I view as damaging, as unjust, as leading to things that cause harm instead of helping. But that’s just me … I’ve been that way since I became politically aware around the age of 5!!!

My writing is my vent that keeps all I see from eating me alive, but frankly I’m at the point where if I go down fighting, then so be it. I cannot do otherwise. Hugs, my friend!

    • We may evolve. We may make it through. Evolution is like that. Otherwise we end up as just a smear on the fossil record.
This may sound gloomy, but I take a perverse comfort in knowing that whatever the outcome; in a million years time, the names of Trump, Elon Musk and all the rest will not figure on the record, not a jot. While one little 300,000,000 year old fern’s signature remains as a fossil. An egotist such as Trump would hate that, if he could understand Irony, that is.

  3. “I have the courage to say to Vladimir Putin when he threatens us with annihilation if we continue to help Ukraine,”
You’re not helping the Ukraine! Maybe you personally wanna help, since you’re a good and courageous human being. But, believe me, Biden, Harris, all their cronies are about to sacrifice the Ukraine. They have so much influence on their puppet Zelensky, they kinda prohibit him from negotiations and inevitable surrender. They rather see the whole country go down in flames … just so they can blame it all on Putin.

Aaand the topic of Annihilation was started by you, respectively America, on August 6, 1945. ’nuff sed! 😐

    ” “F*CK YOU, Vlad!”
Vlad ain’t the correct short form for Vladimir. It’s Vova; while Vlad is a name all on its own. Geez, are Americans really that undereducated? :/

“You do not rule the world,”
No worries, he never wanted or made any move or gave the impression he wanted to. Saving Russian lives in Eastern Ukraine doesn’t equal ruling the world. 7/8 of the earth’s population call it ‘first response’. Where do you source your “facts” from?

“you have no right to tell the United States to whom it can provide assistance, whether weapons, food, medical supplies, or whatever.”
Americans have and had no rights to instigate one of their many “colour revolutions” in Ukraine and install a puppet regime with a proverbial actor acting as president. Putin just reacted to the unbearable amount of stupid bullydom and violent strikes on the ethnic Russians in Ukraine. Don’t tell me that was all Zelensky by his lonesome. Heck we wonder what exactly is America’s bizniz so close to Russian borders? Heck, everybody but some American neocons wonder about the same. Don’t you have 2 whole continents on your side of the puddle to knead into submission? And, are you finished with that job? I don’t think so. Go finish in your backyard before you try to go aggro on much bigger fishes!

And by the way, Ukraine civilists don’t need assistance. Not on behalf of the Russian military. They are trying their best to do their avised job (liberation, demilitarization, denazification) with as little of inconveniece for the people as possible. As proven time and again. Else, why do you think internet, trains, TV, radio infrastructure and electricity powergrid would still be functioning? Heck, they don’t even disrupt Zelensky’s increasingly desperate propaganda and they allow his military to commit all the war crimes they later blame on the Russians. Why? Because the Russians are humans with soul and Americans are not.

Don’t listen to the neocon propaganda, listen to the experts like Col. Macgregor …
    https://orcaflotta.blog/2022/04/16/col-douglas-macgregor-russia-ukraine-war-day-48/

… and ex-UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter:

Here’s a Q for you: If Russia was at war with the Ukraine, do you really believe there would still be two connected bricks standing on top of each other in the whole country? Almost 50 days now, it would be a Mad Max wasteland. Gone. Eradicated.

I guess by focusing all your irrational hatred on a single player of the other team, you only see your immediate little bubble and not the giant geopolitical conflict. We can discuss this deeper once you got off your high horse of desperation and checked the facts. Or we just wait it out and see for ourselves how this conflict’s gonna end. I can only predict one outcome for sure: You and me and all our readers will be financially much poorer. 😮

  4. I am in conversation with a “gentleman” on Claytoonz who tells me he is a millionaire many times over, and he is proud of the life he built from scratch. While I was discussing the suffering his greed has caused he said these words to me: “I could care less, being the good right wing republican that I am.”
The way he said them I belueved him. He has no idea how him hoarding his wealth is caysing suffering. To him, anyone who suffers is too lazy to
apply themselves, so why should he care about them. In my mind, truer words were never spoken!

    • Odds are that this ‘gentleman’ (and I use that term loosely) did not build the life of a millionaire from scratch, but rather started with a silver spoon in his mouth, then inherited most of the rest. Right wing Republicans make me sick and I likely would have told him that. People like him live in an Ivory Tower so high that they literally cannot see the rest of us, cannot see the day-to-day struggles just to survive. And worse yet, they believe they are entitled to all they have! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Excellent post; I only wish that more of those readers were channelled to your blog. Or maybe the one or other of those 63Mio t…ump voters?! The mind boggles.

    • I think most of us who care what happens, who care about people more than money, are having some sleepless nights these days. Between Russia’s terrible ongoing invasion of Ukraine and Putin’s threats, the Republican-caused chaos here in the U.S., the threat that Marine LePen could actually unseat Macron in a week, and the threat that Trump could return to power here … it’s enough to keep anybody awake. Sigh. It seems that all over the world people are being fools … more so than usual. Like you, I ask myself what we have come to. Thanks, Kiki! Sadly, those t…ump voters don’t read my words, for they only hear the words of those who agree with them. Sigh. Hugs!
