Just Two Snippets de Snark

I just have two short snippets of snark today.  Sometimes two is enough.

Pandemic or no pandemic???

“You cannot have your cake and eat it, too” said my mother on a near-daily basis.  And yet, that is precisely what a portion of this nation would like to do.  They pushed and pushed to declare the pandemic “over” and finally got their way.  Mask and vaccine mandates are largely now a thing of the past and people are going on about business as if there had never even been a pandemic. The girls and I went to 📚Barnes & Noble yesterday (first time since March 2020!), responsibly wearing our masks, and there was not one single other person there, not even the staff, wearing a mask.  There will be a price to pay for this perfidy, but that’s a story for another day.

Today’s point is that … while people selfishly wanted to believe and convince others that there is no longer a pandemic, they are now ranting and carrying on because President Biden lifted Title 42, a restriction against immigration put into place by the former guy because of the pandemic!  Now, if there is no more pandemic, then there must be no more Title 42.  If you want Title 42 to remain in place, then you must believe the pandemic is still a danger and must agree to mask and vaccine mandates!  You cannot have it both ways!!!

The reality, as we all know, is that a sizable portion of the people in this country are anti-immigration and they see the pandemic as an excuse to deny asylum to migrants and refugees.  Plain and simple bigotry.  Call a ♠️ a spade.

Right to life???  Don’t make me laugh

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, guns have become the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States, surpassing car crashes, drug overdose and poisoning.

“There were more than 4,300 firearm-related deaths among people under 19 in the U.S. in 2020, a 29 percent increase from 2019.”

According to the report,  the rise in gun-related deaths among Americans between the ages of one and 19 was part of an overall 33.4% increase in firearm homicides nationwide.

Population of U.S.               330,000,000
Percentage of population that owns guns 32%
Number of gun owners in U.S.               105,600,000
# of guns in hands of citizens               390,000,000
Average # of guns per gun owner                              3.69

People scream and yell about the “right to life” when the subject is abortion, but nary a peep do you hear when the topic is kids being murdered by guns.  Way to go, Americans!  With more than 390 million guns owned by US civilians that we know of, and only a total of about 330 million people in the nation with only about 32% being gun owners, something is seriously wrong here. This means that on average, each of the 105.6 million gun owners owns 3.69 guns!  WHO THE HELL NEEDS 4 GUNS???  I guess it’s one way of cutting back the population … see, there’s a positive side to everything.

And a belated ‘toon in honour of Earth Day (yesterday) …

  1. Jill, the mantra of my former party is simple. Destroying the planet is OK, as it makes money for investors in fossil fuel. Destroying lives is OK as making the Second amendment the 11th commandment garners votes. Destroying civil rights is OK as those folks would vote against us. And, the party needs all the money and votes so we can do our real mission – give money to rich people and help them keep it. But, shh, don’t tell anybody. Keith

    • You are spot-on in all you say, my friend. I often wonder if they have been so brainwashed for so long that they have come to actually believe the b.s., or if they are well aware they’re telling fairy tales? Either way, I wonder how the likes of Greene, Boebert, McCarthy, McConnell, Gosar and the rest sleep at night, how they can look their children in the eye. Heh heh … okay, I’ll keep it a secret!

  3. This IS how half the population of the Earth treats its mother, because the world is a big place and they cannot see the big picture. They see only what is directly in front of them, and so they cannot see or believe the truth. Including a huge number of politicians, who are being PAID to not even look!
As for the pandemic, Republicans are taught by their teligious leaders to be cherry pickers. Now their politicians want them to cherry pick their causes. That the causes are not real matters not one twit!

    • You’re so right about that … and what they cannot see, they don’t care about. Not all, naturally, but far too many. Yep, even the pandemic has become a political tool, just like education, diversity, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, and so much more. Sigh.

      • I cannot believe the “”groomer” thing is working, but yet I have been accused of being one on Substack. That was after I thanked someone for noticing I was “woke!” Don’t know why they think “woke” is a bad thing! And “grooming” kids for a good life is a good thing too, last I checked!

        • Good grief — these people have completely upended the English language!!! A groomer is someone who trims the fur on your puppy, not someone who sexually abuses children! Just like ‘woke’ is what you are when you open your eyes in the morning — how in the bloody hell did the Republicans turn it into something that, by the tone of voice and facial expressions, makes it seem like a horrible thing??? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

          • That is their talent, isn’t it. And their MAGAts eat it up. Which is why the Dems need intelligent slogans, words that tell people they are respected, not a bunch of ding-dong rubes!

            • Some days, I begin to actually WISH for a Civil War, one in which the magats secede and form their own enclave, preferably in the southern states where most of the bigots already reside. I see no hope of really uniting the two sides in this country, for one side is ardently in support of having a white, Christian, straight, male-dominated world, and that is a world I refuse to live in.

              • I really hope it does not come to that, but it may be necessary. Would be a lot of people on the move, though, in hoth directions. Those logistics would be near impossible to coordinate. Who would get the White House?

                • Yes, there surely would be, and companies would have to decide which ground they stand on. It’s certainly not an ideal solution, not even a good one, but more and more I sense that people on both sides are unwilling to give so much as an inch, and no good can come of an environment like that. As re your question about the White House, there would have to be two entire governments, each with its own leader and Congress or Parliament, each with its own laws. And each section would have its own economy, system of taxation, etc.

                  • It would even take two bureaucrcracies. But one already exists. Or would both sides destroy it to keep it from falling into the other side’s hands. It is like Putin demolidhing Mariupol! He wants it so bad he is willing to raze it to the ground. So who would want to live there once a “winner” is declared? It’s value is being destroyed. What a stupid way to fight a war!
Dividing the USA by area is pretty much unthinkable.Yet it may have to be done! I cannot see an acceptable compromise anywhre. In Science Fiction America was often divided by the Mississippi River when it had to be divided. I don’t think even that would work.

                    • Yes, the reality of such a division is … nearly impossible, but … I think it might eventually come to pass in one form or fashion. Unless people learn the art of compromise, learn to be humans and to help others, then I don’t see a possibility of reconciliation.

What Putin has done to Ukraine is … heartbreaking and infuriating. I’m amazed that somebody hasn’t taken an axe to his head yet! Yes, it is a STUPID way to fight a way, but … is there a sane way to fight one? War in and of itself is stupid! People are stupid because they are greedy and arrogant. Sigh. Methinks I need sleep. And lastly, the U.S. is far more divided by the Mason-Dixon line than the Mississippi River.

                    • It was just an example from the minds of authors who anticipated the splitting of America, but for totally different reasons. I don’t lmow much about the Mason- Dixon Line, I thought it was a railroad line or something. The Mississippi is a real geographic feature. Sounds like the Mason-Dixon line is just a “borderline” of some kind, only exists on paper, not in reality.

                    • The Mason-Dixon line is not a physical boundary, but the demarcation between the North and South in the Civil War. There are still broad ideological differences between North & South, and those in the South remain more likely to be bigoted racists and homophobes. But, today those are found in every state, every neighborhood, and even on every street, so any civil war now would be neighbor against neighbor, and even brother against sister, mother against son, etc. The lines are far less physical, less identifiable today than they once were.
