And The Snark Goes On … And On … And ON

My radar had a busy, busy day yesterday … news items were flying onto the screen at a pace I couldn’t even keep up with.  You’ll hear about them all, eventually, but for this morning, here are two that stuck in my craw.

One Million Moms

… sounds like a group of mothers concerned about their children’s future, a group willing to stand up and fight against such things as racism, homophobia, and misogyny.  A group who wants their children to have the best chance possible at a future, who will fight for their child’s right to a widely-varied education that opens their minds and prepares them for the future, right?  WRONG!!!  One Million Moms is a hate group that supports bigotry in all its forms, who would happily eradicate the LGBTQ community, and who would turn back the hands of time hundreds of years, given the chance.

One Million Moms was created by the American Family Association (AFA), a right-wing ‘Christian’ organization that is opposed to women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, and basically anything that doesn’t fit into their neat, compact view of how the world ought to be.  AFA has been listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as an anti-LGBTQ hate group, and One Million Moms fits snugly into that category.

Recently, Kay Jewelers put out an ad titled, “Celebrate Every Kiss” that shows couples kissing, one of which happens to be two dads with their young son.  Well, Monica Cole, the ‘leader’ of One Million Moms, went ballistic, writing in an email that …

This ad is inappropriate on so many levels and is clearly attempting to desensitize viewers. Kay Jewelers should avoid aiming to please a small percentage of customers while pushing away conservative customers.

Promoting same-sex relationships has nothing to do with marketing jewelry. Yet Kay Jewelers wants to make it clear where they stand on this controversial topic, instead of remaining neutral in the culture war.

One Million Moms continues to stand up for biblical truth. Romans 1:26-27 is very clear about this type of sexual perversion.

There is concern about the way this advertisement is pushing the LGBTQ agenda, but an even greater concern is that the commercial is airing during prime time when children are likely to be watching television.

Hmmmm … seems to me that it would be comforting for the young child of an LGBTQ couple to see that his family is not an anomaly and comforting to that young person who is in the ‘Q’ stage of his own development to see that he/she is not alone, that homosexuality is NOT perversion, but is natural.

Ms. Cole is a bigot.  Full stop.  She and her ilk are a large part of the reason there is so much hatred, so much violence, so much division among people in the world today.  Oh, and by the way, AFA is also against the cable network Animal Planet, because they say the network “features evidence of homosexuality”.  These people really, really need to get a life, to join the 21st century!

Ol’ Madison Cawthorn … ‘Lock Him UP!’

Madison Cawthorn has been a thorn in the side of this nation ever since he began grabbing headlines a few years ago.  He was a contributor to the events of January 6th, he has no relevant education or experience that would qualify him to be a member of Congress, but yet the good people of North Carolina took pity on him, seeing him sitting in his wheelchair, and they gave him a chance in the 2020 election, to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.

However, he has not served We the People, but only his own vested interests.  His only government employment prior to 2021 was working as a staff assistant to the ignoble Mark Meadows, another plotter and instigator of the fatal January 6th events.  He began college, but dropped out with a “D” average, and he was rejected by the Naval Academy, but lied about it.  So … what did you folk down in North Carolina expect to get for your efforts?

Madison has been the source of a number of controversies, but two are in the news this week and prove how utterly inappropriate it is for him to be a member of the U.S. Congress!

  • For the second time, Cawthorn tried to sneak a loaded handgun onto a commercial airline flight. Now, if that had been you or me, our patooties would be sitting in the Charlotte jail right now, but rather than arrest such an “important” person, he was merely issued a citation and it’s still unclear whether the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will pursue the fine, which would be $13,900 for any of the rest of us.
  • Senator Thom Tillis, also a Republican from North Carolina, is calling for an investigation into what may well turn out to be insider trading … a violation of a member of Congress’ oath of office. Cawthorn is under fire after posing with hedge fund manager James Koutoulas, who was the “ringleader” of the “Let’s Go Brandon” cryptocurrency on Dec. 29. The next day, NASCAR driver Brandon Brown announced his partnership with the LGBCoin, which caused the value to spike.  It is a serious accusation that could result in Cawthorn’s expulsion from office.

In recent months, Cawthorn has been under scrutiny for a number of issues, such as speeding and driving with a revoked license multiple times, claiming that people in Congress invited him to orgies and calling President Zelenskyy of Ukraine a “thug.”  I don’t know about you folks, but he is NOT the sort of person I want making the decisions that will affect all of our lives!!!

  1. As usual the Intolerant Right who mis use the Bible take their highlighters and with a lustful scream of ‘Aieeeee!’ pounce upon a few words to fit into their view of the world.
Romans 1 26 etc is preceded by 20-25: (The whole ‘1’ being another of Paul’s lectures to Christian communities)….anyway:
“20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.”

Now Paul was lecturing about opposition religions and as he saw it their pagan rituals, idolatry and improper behaviour, when worshiping. Which is arguably a fair point, if you are happen to be of another opinion on how you worship at your place of worship ….I will not gave way to a mischievous inclination to make satirical comparative
    comments.
Now members of the jury I would draw your attention to V 24
‘Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.’
Which suggests that God said ‘Yeah OK, if you guys are not going to take worship seriously and solemnly…go on then have your fun, but don’t blame me if it all goes wrong yeah?’ Thus God allowed folk to……(redacted)……

At no time do the passages relate to what’s going on in private in the home. It also seems to suggest orgiastic group sex is the bad thing…which I tend to agree with….All very seedy and peer pressure exploitive.

    Satire warning…Force 11….
This is the trouble with these evangelic women reading The Bible; they don’t understand the passages, they get all steamed up over what they see as the naughty bits and this their passions are inflam(ed)…They should attend to matters in the kitchen, the neatness of their home and whether their children have regular dental check ups…and do that shopping…then cook for their hardworking husbands…Stay away from things they do not understand…….It’s Eve all over again I tell you!

PS that a-hole with the gun. If he likes guns so much he should get his butt over to Ukraine, there’s lotsa guns over there!

    • I especially like #22 … “Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools” … seems to be a bit of that these days. And I was bummed thinking I would miss out on your satirical comment, but then … it came along anyway! I knew you couldn’t hold it in for long! And oooooohhhhh … definitely one of your better ones! Luckily, you forewarned that it was satire!!! As re the guns … agreed … let them fight mano a mano, or pistola a pistola and leave us in peace! Let them go battle the Russians!

      • If this Right weren’t such a menace to the USA as a whole they would be fun because they are easy targets. They fact that 70,000,000+ voted for the stain on the Whitehouse reminds us, this is no Archie Bunker chuckling show.

Or if they are so concerned about migrants why don’t they volunteer to join Central American police forces who have to risk lives daily against drug cartels which are the main cause of immigration. Yeah. Get yourselves down there and sort out the problem…That should be interesting to watch.

        • You’re right … if it were a comedy sketch on Saturday Night Live, or a monologue of Stephen Colbert’s, it would be funny, but sadly it is our reality and … I cannot chuckle any more. Remember how I laughed and ridiculed Trump’s 1st presidential bid? NO WAY, I said, could he ever win the election. Well, we see how that worked out, eh?

I was reading a biographical snippet about Martin Niemöller last night and it told that the Germans, at some point, actually took out certain text from the Bible because they said it favoured Jews! Is it, then, a stretch to believe that the Magats might take out the parts about “that which you’ve done for the least of my brethren, ye have done for me”? Or any other parts that refer to loving everyone? I’m no biblical scholar, not even a Christian, but I think I understand more about what Christianity is supposed to mean than some of these bigots!

              • ‘Twas ever thus Jill. This time The Crazy has decided to spend some ‘quality’ time in our respect nations’ consciousnesses.

In trying to get a focus on The Whole I’m thinking about starting another blog; not shut down the others.
My usual blog will stick with the original ‘Mission’- About writing and quirky things.
The second will stay as a series of musings about my trilogy, a point of reference for anyone who needs information on the books, and a kind of PS.
But I’m thinking about this 3rd. My views and suggestions as to why Things Are The Way The Are. A place where grim explanations are given. Maybe a somewhat depressing place to visit, or hopefully one of a type of clarification.
Restlessness in a hopefully constructive way.

                • I know you’re right when you say “Twas ever thus”, but it just seems that people today have forgotten to be human, that the things that divide us are … everything! And what’s worse is that people are disagreeing in violent manners, that they think their opinions are the only ones that count and that gives them the right to kill any who disagree with them. It’s spreading like wildfire here, and in many other places, too … though I still consider the UK to be relatively civil despite Brexit and BoJo.

I do like your idea for the third blog … Why Things Are The Way They Are … or maybe, “The World According to Roger”!!! But wait … you have a second blog that I don’t know about? How did I manage to miss that? Or did I know about it at one time and forgot? I AM getting forgetful these days. Send me a link, please!!! And about the third one you’re thinking of doing … would readers be able to pose a question or propose a topic, or would it just be whatever pops into your head and needs a vent? Either way, I’m interested!

                  • On the first point Jill ‘Twas Ever Thus’ would be a kind of theme, showing we are not learning from the past and thus repeating the mistakes.

The Third Blog is under construction, but thanks to my impatience and Fumble Fingers when it comes to matters computers PLUS WP’s arcane and unhelpful ways it is a task of some magnitude (We are a fractious couple). I have a title though ‘The World As It Is. Not As It Should Be’

The second blog was one I set up solely to do with the trilogy involving The Girls. It was created should the books have taken off as a go-to-place for readers, or an introduction for those curious about them.
I’ve not written anything in there for a year or so now, though I might do a couple of ‘essays’ just for posterity’s sake:

  2. Hello Jill. Thank you for covering the story of the latest outburst from Monica Cole. While she thinks it is her right to oppress others and try to force the world to live by her religious views, she is part of a larger growing problem. The Republicans have created a feeling in the in country that attacking the LGBTQ+ is not only OK but a civic duty protecting children and women, two defenseless groups being attacked by the horrid evil bad people trying to molest and harm them. The Republicans are trying to stop the growing acceptance of LGBTQ+ people especially the young ones in school that are not being punished, ostracized, and bullied for being who they are. The Republicans are doing that by hammering the idea that the LGBTQ+ are predators, bad people that want to harm your kids by showing them porn, teaching five year old’s sex, and making 1st graders change their genders. See how bad and horrible these people are, they shouldn’t be in schools around your kids, which is why we have to make all these don’t say gay laws. It is an attempt to change the Overton window of public conversation. It has worked in Russia, Poland, and other authoritarian countries where the government bans the LGBTQ+ from the public media and public square so they cannot defend themselves while the government continues demonizing them. It worked in Russia where the LGBTQ+ had a fast growing acceptance in the population until the church got Putin to make any anything positive about LGBTQ+ when a minor might encounter it illegal. Nothing positive in public, in media including print such as newspapers, not even displaying the rainbow flag was legal. The government claimed this was necessary to protect the children, sound familiar. In Russia not only was the growing acceptance of the LGBTQ+ stopped, it reversed to where the public now consider them to be enemies of the public.

As for Cawthorn, a kid from a well off highly religious family who was home schooled then went to a bible themed college who had a reputation of being aggressively sexually abusive to the women in the college to the point where females wouldn’t let each other be alone with him. He spouts God and his moral superiority while breaking the rules because clearly they don’t apply to him as a white male Christian. He is a racist and a bigot. He has publicly stated that he admires Hitler and trump, and he has made lying a completive sport he is trying hard to win a gold medal in. But he thinks he is born to rule others, and so far the voters seem to support him. Did I miss anything? Seems to be the most immature kid trying hard to impress the big kids who are laughing at him not with him. I must admit I expected the religious establishment to be more supportive of him.

  4. Worser and worser. I had heard of One Million Moms previously, and when I did I wondered how many Moms there are in America, or better yet, how many Moms in the world? Seeing as about half, if not more of the population of the world is female, so let’s guesstimate approaching 4 billion women, and that probably 70%, as a bare minimum, are Moms, or 2.8 billion, One Million Moms is but a drop in a bucket. Even if only looking at the USA, where guesstimating there are near at least 140 million Moms, One Million Moms represemnts 0.7% of the mothers in America, they are a trivial minority. These are the numbers that should be being made public. One Million Moms may sound like an impressive number, but it is a pittance. There are likely 139 million Moms who want their children to be free to be whoever they want to be. In the world they represent a mere 0.035% of all human mothers. That’s a mighty tiny number.
As for Cawthorn, another waste of flesh and bone. If he is not charged with, and convicted of, being a menace to society in dozens of ways, then what are the hopes of DJT ever being sent to prison for conspiracy to overthrow the government of the USofA. It is time for the American Justice System to find their cohones. And when either one of them is brought finally brought yo justice, expect them to plead “Not guilty by reason of insanity.” Putting them into homes for the Mentally Insane actually works better than prison, because they will never be let out! And their reputations will be laughable to all.

    • Well, good job on all the math, but I did a bit of checking and it turns out that there are just over 4,000 members of the group calling itself One Million Moms. The intro to their website even says that … “We are searching for one million moms who are willing to join the fight for our children.” Searching and having are two entirely different things. And this Cole b*tch is the founder and apparently only spokesperson for the hate group. So anyway, yes, their number is tiny … even tinier than you estimated!

Yes, Cawthorn is definitely a waste of earth’s resources! I’d love to see him sentenced to prison time for all his crimes, but at this point I’ll settle for him being rendered ineligible to run for re-election in November! I just want him (and about 50 others) OUT of Congress before they destroy this nation those of us who live here. Sigh.

      • Well, I am glad to know they don’t even have 1,000,000 members, but there are at least that many mothers in America who do think l8ke that. They just don’t want the world to know they do. And they are brainwashing their kids to be folliwers, not leaders.

        • Hmmmm … maybe, but I still believe it is a minority who feel like that … they’re just a very loud, obnoxious minority. Funny that the bigots are much louder and willing to fight to preserve their bigotry than those who are of good hearts, accepting of all. Why is this? Is this the same phenomena that led to Hitler’s regime in Germany in the 1930s?

          • I don’t think so, though it could be connected in a strange way. I think most clear-thinking people ingore the loudmouths because they “know” that most people are well-meaning and good-intentioned. To make a fuss about what the loudmouths are saying is to give them a platform where they can spread their insanity. Laissez-faire, live and let live.
The proB.lem: not countering what the loudmouths say allows them to get louder, and bolder–to turn words into action. So, damned if you do, damned if you don’t!
I don’t think most people apply the “it isn’t me so it’s okay” rule. Maybe they believe “it will never get that bad.” And normally it does not. But it can, as it did in in 30s Germany, and you can never know until it happens. You can suspect, but you CANNOT KNOW. And if nothing happens, they were right not to make waves. But “if it does”… then probably it is too late,

            • Well, it’s rather like the whole issue surrounding gun legislation. When polled, something around 80% of gun owners advocated for stronger gun laws including expanded background checks and an assault weapon ban. And yet, that other 20% are the ones you hear screaming about “take my gun over my dead body” and so forth. They are the loudest, but not anywhere near a majority. And, almost every poll shows the Democrats are in the majority, but they are not by any means the loudest.

I don’t know about that … I know far too many who say they are not political and that this is just politics and it always works out … always has, always will. I find that I cannot even use logic or reason … as soon as I try, their heads start shaking vehemently. I, on the other hand, am not always right by a long shot, but I will never be silent about injustices and threats to the planet, its people, or any other life form. It’s just who I am.

  5. 11% of the members of the New Zealand house of representatives are openly LGBTQ+, which is why, according to one local “Christian” fundamentalist leader and right-wing political activist, this nation has so many major earthquakes and eruptions this century. Apparently so much tolerance of “sin” angers the earth we stand on. I daresay one million moms would hold a similar view. And here I was believing the events were because these shakey islands lie on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

I see liberalism as an essential part of freedom. True freedom doesn’t exist until everyone is free, and that means enabling and encouraging everyone to be the person they truly are, not forcing them to be someone they’re not. While I’m sure there must be some liberal right wingers somewhere, too many seem to be not just conservative but regressive, seeking a social order that hasn’t existed for well over a century and perhaps never has (well, in this corner of the world anyway).

The day when society starts placing barriers in the way of people such as those in one million moms or in the church of the aforementioned religious leader from living freely as cis, straight, religiously conservative and right wing individuals, is the day I will consider listening to their ranting. I’m cautiously optimistic that that day will never come.

    • Oh for Pete’s SAKE!!!! They surely cannot really believe that b.s.!!! Can they? I am beyond pleased, though, that 11% of your representatives are openly LGBTQ … you guys are obviously far ahead of the U.S. in acceptance! I’m with you … I really think the geographical structure and effects of climate change are the causes.

“True freedom doesn’t exist until everyone is free” … wise words, my friend, and so very true! I think, though, that there will never come a time when everyone, regardless of skin colour, beliefs, sexual orientation, gender, etc., has the same level of freedom. Humans in general seem to have a sense of superiority in one form or fashion, and that is the root cause of the problem. I’ve heard it called ‘tribalism’, but frankly I despise that term, for it makes me feel that people think we should be segregated by our differences instead of united by them.

I wish I could share your optimism … I did until the past decade or so. Sigh.

      • I’m sure their beliefs are genuine as are those who believe that 5G and/or vaccinations are a sinister plot to control/eliminate vast swathes of humanity and those who insist a deity created the universe less than 10 millennia ago. They are all wrong of course, but then I probably hold a few beliefs that I am unaware are based in false information.

I confess that my optimism is based on the NZ experience, and I’m less optimistic about the US where it seems almost half the population perceive of freedom as being a homogeneous society where everyone holds the same values, beliefs. practices and skin colour so long as it’s white, misogynist, fundamentalist Christian and right wing.

New Zealand may only be the third oldest democracy (behind the US and Switzerland) but it has been a liberal democracy much longer the the other two nations combined. We’ve been a liberal democracy for well over a century – there’s no one alive today who was born in NZ when it was not a liberal democracy. On the other hand approximately half of all US born citizens will have some memory of the pre liberal democratic era. For this reason alone it’s still rather fragile.

        • Ah yes, or those who believe that Jewish space lasers caused the west coast wildfires last year! Sure, we may all find that something we’ve long believed is disproven at some point, but let’s face it, some of today’s conspiracy theories are too far-fetched for a thinking mind to accept. I truly think it’s more a joke, a way of manipulating people, than a serious belief on their part. It is, apparently, easy to fool the ignorant, to lead them around by the nose, to get them to follow even if it’s off of a cliff.

Your optimism for your own country is well-placed, but you’re very right to have doubts about the U.S. Far too many people here forget (or never understood) that freedom comes with responsibilities, that it is not only your own freedom, but the freedom of all. Freedom of religion means that one does not have to be Christian, but today the white evangelicals would tell you otherwise, would swear that their own freedom is lost if there are Muslims, Hindus, Jews, and atheists in the country. Freedom of speech — I have often said that your freedom ends where it steps on mine … and vice versa. But today, people believe that their freedom is THE ONLY one they need to concern themselves with, and if their pursuit of freedom costs a few of us our lives … well then, so be it. Sigh.

I think it is probably an understatement to say that our liberal democracy is fragile … I think it is about to be tested and I’m not sure it can pass muster. Ask me again (if I’m still on the planet) in about 4 years …

    • How did the fundamentalist leader explain the 1531 Lisbon earthquake in a very religious nation?…Oh don’t tell me, it was because it was a Catholic Nation. (that’s another get-out clause they use)
You have to go head to head with these characters with a copy of the Bible and be prepared to quote the parts around the out-of-context quote they have used, and then some.
Eventually when backed into a corner they go into Denial.
They’ll still be in Denial when they get the big thumbs down at the ‘Pearly Gates’; then The Devil will have to put up with their whining for all Eternity.

      • Going head to head with fundamentalists is simply not worth the effort. Some of them know the Bible exceptionally well. It’s their interpretation of it that’s the problem, but they can make it consistent with their beliefs, whatever those might be. The Bible itself has too many inconsistencies to be useful to counter fundamentalist arguments and I have no desire to become as familiar with it as the fundamentalist leader I referred to most definitely is. And if, in a moment of insanity, I decided to go head to head with such a person, I can assure you the Bible would not be one of the weapons in my arsenal.

Members of congress should not get special treatment when they break the law. Imagine that, we agree. it happens periodically.

  7. Jill, the one million moms are misusing the power of that name, in my view. Fortunately, while people like the Florida governor are trying to stop the train, the diversity train is moving ahead. The gist of the SCOTUS ruling is folks like the one million moms have “no standing” in whether two men, two women, two gender-neutral folks get married. Just as we have “no standing” what those one million moms do in their bedroom. That is how this freedom thing works.

As for the tempestuous young Congressman from NC, he cannot seem to get out of his own way and also learn from past mistakes. That is more about his lack of judgment than his youth.

This Monica Cole person … I did a bit of research into her … she is a dyed-in-the-wool lunatic! I would never … NEVER want to live in the world she envisions!

Agreed on all points about Madison Cawthorn! What I don’t understand is how the Sam Hell he got elected in the first place. Perhaps it says more about the people in his district than it says about him. Same is true for Margie Greene. We have a Capitol filled with unqualified bigots. Sigh. Hugs

    • True, diversity continues to move on, to clear the hurdles, but for how long? If many other states follow the path of Florida and Texas, how long before the Supreme Court is poised to overturn Obergefell v Hodges as it is likely to overturn Roe v Wade? There’s a new wave of inflexibility and intolerance sweeping this nation, it seems.

Agreed … Cawthorn cannot blame his flaws and excesses on youth, but it is more about who he is. Personally, I don’t think the person he is should be sitting in Congress!
