As usual, blogging friend Brosephus sees clearly the situation at hand, the loss of democratic underpinnings in this nation, the loss of voting rights and women’s rights, among others. We are what Brosephus aptly calls a ‘paper democracy’. Thanks, Bro, for these wise words …
America is a paper democracy, meaning it’s a democracy in name only. It’s been that way from the founding of the country and has stayed the course throughout our history as a nation. We’ve flirted with real democracy for short periods of time like during Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Era. Each time we’ve come close, the country reverses progress and returns to being paper.
For those who are unaware, the terms “real” and “paper” as well as the intended meaning in this post are borrowed from the Divine Nine culture, or the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). When a member is considered as real, they have gone through the pledging rituals, put in the time/effort, and did the requisite work to earn their membership in their respective Greek Letter organization. Paper members are more likely to have paid their fees, learned their history, and received their letters without the grueling…

Thomas Jefferson’s words seem to be coming around again:
‘The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants,’
It should not be this way, but since one group on the Right seem intent of being tyrannical they are intent on dragging the rest of the nation down this road.

Yes, the Founding Fathers were wise … wiser than most are today. No, it should not be this way, but greed seems to be an unstoppable train and greed is what leads to so many of our problems in this, the 21st century.

Sadly Jill History warns there is no steady, sure progress to ‘sunny uplands’

So true. Back in my younger days, I naively thought that someday humans would just learn to set aside their differences and all live together in peace and harmony. Dumb, eh? I was a member of the flower power movement, just happened to live in San Francisco at the time, and I fell for the concept of peace, love, and harmony. HAH!!!

In reply to a comment by Brosephus about gun msgazines I duggested making all guns have only single load chambers “as were all guns when the Second Amendment was written,” The more I think about it, the more I think it is a great idea.

The protection against tyranny is paper thin. That’s troubling

I don’t think that until the last 6 years or so, I realized just how very thin it is. Methinks the paper is developing holes already and we are on the brink … of what, I cannot say, but something horrible.
