I know, I know … I played this one about a year-and-a-half ago, February 2021, but it popped into my head this afternoon and it’s been stuck there all evening, so humour me, okay?
Anyway, you all seemed to like it just fine last time I played it, so kick back, relax, and listen …
Last night, David sent me a great selection of tunes to listen to and to consider for a slot on my music posts. About half of them, I hadn’t heard before, but several I had heard and liked. Tonight’s selection is one of my favourites, or perhaps it just suits my mood tonight.
Reflections of my Life, released in November 1969 by the Scottish pop group The Marmalade, was written by their lead guitarist Junior Campbell, and singer Dean Ford. The song went on to chart worldwide, reaching #3 in the UK in 1969, and #10 in the U.S. in 1970. Initial sales were significant in both countries, and the one million mark was reported in November 1971, when the group was presented with a gold disc for global sales. It was the only hit the group would have in the U.S., although they had ten songs that charted in the UK between 1968 and 1972.
The track featured a lead vocal by Ford backed by vocal harmonies, and included a reverse tape guitar solo (backmasking) by Campbell. Reflections of My Life has produced sales of over two million units. In 1998 the writers were awarded a Special Citation of Achievement by the BMI for attaining radio broadcast performances in excess of one million in the U.S. alone.
Reflections of My Life
Marmalade
The changing of sunlight to moonlight
Reflections of my life
Oh, how they fill my eyes
The greetings of people in trouble
Reflections of my life
Oh, how they fill my eyes
Oh, my sorrows
Sad tomorrows
Take me back to my own home
Oh, my crying (Oh, my crying)
Feel I’m dying, dying
Take me back to my own home
I’m changing, arranging
I’m changing
I’m changing everything
Everything around me
The world is
A bad place
A bad place
A terrible place to live
Oh, but I don’t want to die
Oh, my sorrows
Sad tomorrows
Take me back to my own home
Oh, my crying (Oh, my crying)
Feel I’m dying, dying
Take me back to my own home
Oh, my sorrows
Sad tomorrows
Take me back to my own home

That is real handmade music, i love. The name of the group is also very funny, and i am sure i would have remembered them, if i had heard anything from them before. Thanks for sharing, Jill! xx Michael

I’m so glad you liked this one! Like you, I find humour in the name of the group, and it makes me think of something to spread on my toast in the morning! This was their biggest hit, and their only one outside the UK, from what I can tell. Glad you liked it, dear friend! xx

A great song, I’ve always loved this one. To me, Marmalade were just another pop band, who struck lucky with a UK #1 with their cover of The Beatles’ Ob-La-Di, then they came out with something as good as this. Pretty damn fine for a band that began life as The Gaylords 😉

I knew you would like this, for I checked the comments from last time I played it … 😉 I don’t think I knew they had covered that Beatles tune … I’ll have to check it out. Glad you liked the music!

It’s a pop classic, the best thing they did – by miles!

Jill, David, this is an awesome song. It is one of those songs that makes you stop what you are doing and listen. I have never seen a live performance of the song. Of course, they may have piped in the horns. While the lyrics are simple, the music is layered, and the vocals are fantastic. Thanks for the memory. Keith
