Say WHAT???

I was stunned to see a headline reading …

Herschel Walker Is A Messy Candidate, But The Georgia Senate Race Is Still A Toss-Up

Say WHAT???  How?  I wrote about Walker not long ago. This is the ‘man’ who lied about having been in the FBI, who sired three children out of wedlock by different women … children he does not support.  This is the ‘man’ who supports the Big Lie and has promoted other conspiracy theories, who put a gun to his ex-wife’s head and threatened to “blow [her] f*ing brains out”, and who chased a delivery person with a gun for being late.  And this is the ‘man’ whose view of climate change is …

“Since we don’t control the air, our good air decided to float over to China’s bad air, so when China gets our good air, their bad air got to move. So it moves over to our good air space. Then, now, we got we to clean that back up.”

This is a college-drop-out’s view of environmental science … stunning, isn’t it?

Simply the fact that he is even allowed to run for a seat in the U.S. Senate is mind-boggling, but the fact that he is running only slightly behind the far more intelligent, more competent incumbent, Ralph Warnock, begs the question:  what the heck are they smoking down in Georgia???  Remember they are also the ones who sent Margie Greene to the House of Representatives in 2020!  I repeat … what are they smoking???

In the RCP average of polls, Warnock is leading Walker by 2.8 percentage points … too close for comfort.  Warnock has been in the Senate for nigh on two years now and has proven himself to be competent, honest, and a man of good conscience.  He co-sponsored a bill to raise the minimum wage to $15, and supports the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.  He is pro-choice, opposes the death penalty, is pro voting rights, is pro LGBTQ rights, and has received a grade of ‘F’ from the National Rifle Association (NRA).  All of which earns him a big thumbs-up in my book.

And yet, some Georgians would prefer a liar, a cheater, and a wife abuser to represent them in the Senate?  Where’s the logic???

One analysis I read claims that part of Walker’s appeal is his ‘status’ as a football player.  Excuse me, people, but the United States Congress is a far cry from a football field!  I can cook a great Jambalaya, but that doesn’t qualify me for a seat in the Senate!!!

And another part of Walker’s potential success is simply partisanship.  Georgia went from red to blue in 2020, but with President Biden’s approval ratings not-so-good right now, it may be leaning back toward the right.  As one analyst said …

“There are X number of people where it doesn’t matter, they’re just going to pull the R lever.”

I’ll never forget when I was in my early 20s, newly married and living in Virginia, near the Tennessee border. A neighbor told me that …

“My daddy was a Republican, his daddy before him was a Republican, and by god I’m gonna die a Republican too.  I’ll never vote for a damn Democrat!”

That, my friends, is a mentality that is almost impossible to reason with, to appeal to with logic.  Let us hope, fingers crossed, that Senator Ralph Warnock can retain his seat in November, because I really, really don’t want somebody sitting in the Senate who points a gun at his own wife, who believes that our “good air” went to China, and who lies more than he tells the truth.  C’mon, Georgians … clear your heads of whatever it is you’re smoking and wake up!

I have an idea!  Congress should pass legislation that each state can only send one nutjob to Congress in any given year!  It’s not fair to the nation for a state to send both a Greene and a Walker at the same time!  We deserve better!

  2. This is what happens when misinformation divides a nation. Despicable politicians prevail because the alternative is a bleeding heart liberal poised to legislate unthinkable social reform, perish the thought! Year after year America ranks lower on the global democracy scale, examples like yours illustrate solid “flawed democracy” status. America is a disaster. Sigh.

    • It seems to me that today we have more self-centered, uncaring people than at any other time, at least in my 71 years on this planet. People who care not one whit for the greater good, for the sake of humanity, but only for their own fortunes and “happiness”. By definition, I’m not sure we qualify as a democracy any more at all, given the voter suppression laws being passed in nearly every state and the fact that our elected officials largely put their own political careers ahead of the will of the people. Yep, I have to agree with you … America is a disaster and it seems unlikely to improve in the near future. Sigh.

        • Oh I know … I keep up with the rankings, but the thing is that if we give up, then we lose even more. This nation has never been a pure democracy, nor was it intended to be at the founding, but rather a democratic republic. We are losing far too much of the democratic foundation upon which our government was built, and we must fight to try to get it back before we slide completely into an authoritarian regime like Hungary or Turkey. That is Trump’s goal, and I think we all need to work hard to block his path.

  3. It’s tribalism. Walker is a football legend, and he’s running for the GOP. Georgia Republicans would vote for the devil himself over Jesus Christ if the election was Devil (R) vs Jesus (D).

    • Jill, Brosephus lays it all out. Herschel Walker led Georgia to a national championship in his freshman year.. He was one of the best known football players ever to play college football, but especially in Georgia. I saw footage of Walker play in High School when I went to college in Georgia. This is no joke – when he touched the ball he almost always scored a touchdown.

I give you this background as he has a mythical status. Is a good candidate? No, but he is a well-known one. I would not be surprised if he won, but I hope he does not. Keith

      • The sports adds to the lore. If Walker was running as a Democrat, none of that would matter. This is the state that had David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler as senators in 2020. This is also the state where Max Cleland, a decorated Vietnam War veteran was defeated by Republican Saxby Chambliss with the aid of Rick Wilson. One ad used images of Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein while attacking Cleland on Senate votes.

There is deep antipathy for Democrats here even though Democrats were the majority 30 years ago. Many current Republicans would have been conservative Dems back then. Walker isn’t fit to be a candidate for dog catcher. Republicans don’t care about anything other than pissing off liberals, and electing a complete moron would definitely qualify for that.

      • Yep, Bro is a smart man, and a Georgian himself, also in law enforcement, so he sees and understands things I cannot possibly understand. I get that people admire star athletes, but being a great footballer does not in any way, shape, or form mean he is qualified for a seat in the Senate. Sigh. Are people really so blind? Don’t answer … it was a rhetorical question. Like you, I hope he does not win the election and that he goes home and spends his days polishing his trophies.

    • Sigh. You are right, no doubt about it, but … people simply are NOT using their brains! So yeah, I love Stevie Wonder, think he’s a great musician, but I wouldn’t vote for him for the U.S. Senate, for that is not his skill, not his talent, not what he knows! And Walker may be, from what I hear is, a great athlete, but that doesn’t mean he’s even read the U.S. Constitution! Sigh.

    • I hear you, my friend! I could not live … could not even travel in the deep south these days, but Ohio is not a whole lot better. We are, after all the state that forced a 10-year-old child, a victim of rape, to travel to another state to get an abortion. I’ve often said that Mike DeWine is one of the better Republican governors, and I still believe that, but … he has signed some crap into law lately that has made my jaw drop!

    • Oh yes … the lowlier, the more uneducated, the more ignorant, the better the Republicans love them! I can name at least 20 right now who are unfit to hold a public office, but they won their election. People don’t seem to care about intelligence or integrity any more. Sigh.

  5. It would seem that being against the rational and common sense has reached cultish proportions. Of course this is not unique to the USA. However mob mentality would seem to be running riot through a section of the body politic in its desperate urge to garner votes at any price.
Comparable to a drug addict doing anything to get that next fix.

    • It has indeed reached cultish proportions, my friend. And no … it isn’t unique to the U.S., however it is unique FOR the U.S. … it is … jaw-dropping to those of us who still believe in a government with integrity, one that operates with the best intentions, the best interest of the people. Am I being a Pollyanna? Perhaps, but … if humanity is not at the core of our lives, of our government, of our thoughts, then … why do we even exist? And okay … let the drug addict do as he will to get that next fix, but I am NOT GONNA PAY FOR IT! I am so disgusted with this country right now that … if North Korea or Russia bombed the entirety of it, I would say in my dying breath, “we deserved that.”

      • I can understand that depth of feeling of anger and frustration Jill.
There are times when a person can feel what I refer to as ‘Old Testament’.
Or to use a line from the old song Tabacco Road:
‘Bring some dynamite and a crane
        Blow it up
        Start all over again’

        • Some days that’s exactly how I feel. When what’s wrong seems to outweigh what’s right, then … time to throw out the cake batter and start over again. Sadly, we’re talking about human lives instead of a bit of flour, sugar and eggs. 😔

          • There are instances in many religions of a deity being fed up of human antics and weighing in heavily on them. Since the basics of all religions at their onsets contain moral tales and warnings you can see where all that is coming from. Message ‘Quit being a’holes!’. But since the a’holes then go and take selective out of context bits from the teachings to attract other a’holes. You get the mess. Anndd as we know it’s also alive and festering in politics and social trends.
            Tick-tock. Tick-tock.

            • Exactly. Although not a Christian, I know enough to know that Christianity is based on the teachings of Jesus, who was a Middle-Easterner who called for love, compassion, and helping others. And yet, to listen to Christians today, they hate people from the Middle East, and seem to have little or no compassion outside their own ‘tribe’ as it were. Seems to me, they are cherry-picking the tomes they claim to live by, ignoring or tossing out that which isn’t convenient for them, and substituting those parts with their own ideas. Yep, tick-tock.

  6. If they send lummoxes to Congress, then they are penalizing the North for winning the civil war. Losing the Civil War is still a cardinal sin. The winners must be sent to hell!
Or at least how it seens to me…

    • You are right … there are some who seem to still be fighting the Civil War, some who would happily take up arms to stop such things as civil rights, LGBTQ rights, women’s rights … to return this to the nation it was prior to 1865. Why? I have no idea. Apparently, they have fallen for the religious leaders who tell them that white, straight males should dominate all of society. BAH HUMBUG!!!!
