♫ Monday Morning ♫

Last Monday, I played Jimmy Buffett’s Come Monday, mostly because it had “Monday” in the title and I was attempting to be creative.  Clive was the first to suggest another Monday song, then a few others followed suit with their own suggestions.  Since Clive was first, and since this isn’t a bad song, I’m playing it this Monday!  I will probably play some of the others on future Monday mornings!

I found very little background or trivia about the song beyond this from SongFacts …

This was written by Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. He and his girlfriend at the time Stevie Nicks were recording as the duo Buckingham-Nicks and had released one album when they were asked to join Fleetwood Mac. This song was written for a second Buckingham-Nicks album, but when they joined Fleetwood Mac they brought this with them along with “Landslide” and “Rhiannon.” These songs helped make Fleetwood Mac a force in the pop music world and establish a strong radio presence for the band.

Wikipedia goes into just a bit more detail …

Like “Rhiannon” and “I’m So Afraid”, “Monday Morning” was intended for a second Buckingham Nicks LP, but the album never came to fruition as their label, Polydor Records, dropped the duo from their roster before they could record a follow-up. The three aforementioned songs were presented to the rest of Fleetwood Mac on Buckingham’s 4-track tape machine during the 1975 recording sessions of Fleetwood Mac. While drummer Mick Fleetwood immediately took a liking to the demos, bassist John McVie was initially hesitant to venture away from the band’s blues roots. Producer Keith Olsen convinced McVie that the band would be more successful embracing pop rock, quipping, “It’s a much faster way to the bank”.

During live performances from 1975-1978, Buckingham performed an intro that would later become the melody of “Tusk”. The song was performed on all of the band’s tours from 1975 to 1978. The song reappeared on the Unleashed Tour in 2009 and later the An Evening with Fleetwood Mac Tour in 2018-2019.

Monday Morning

Fleetwood Mac

Monday morning you sure look fine
Friday I got travelin’ on my mind
First you love me and then you fade away
I can’t go on believin’ this way
I got nothing but love for you
Tell me what you really want to do
First you love me, then you get on down the line
But I don’t mind, I don’t mind, yeah

I’ll be there if you want me to
No one else that could ever do
Got to get some peace in my mind

Monday morning you sure look fine
Friday I got travelin’ on my mind
First you love me and then you say it’s wrong
You know I can’t go on believing for long

But you know it’s true
You only want me when I get over you
First you love me, then you get on down the line
But I don’t mind, no, I don’t mind, yeah

I’ll be there if you want me to
No one else that could ever do
Got to get some peace in my mind

But you know it’s true
You know you only want me when I get over you
First you love me, then you get on down the line
But I don’t mind, no, I don’t mind, yeah

I’ll be there if you want me to
No one else that could ever do
Got to get some peace in my mind

  2. Thanks for playing this one, Jill. I think it’s a good deal better than being ‘not a bad song!’ The album was superb but has got rather overlooked in comparison with the behemoth that was its follow up.

    • Y’know, Clive … I thought it deserved better than “not a bad song” too after I wrote that, and I fully intended to change it but … I forgot. Seems I’m forgetting quite a bit these days. 😔 Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed the song!

  4. Jill, thanks for the background. Isn’t it amazing a label would drop the duo with songs ready to record? I remember when Graham Nash brought “Merakesh Express” to CS&N when The Hollies chose not to record it. Keith

  5. For reasons unknown my internet is down so I’m hoping to get through on my phone. Can’t listen til I get internet back, but I remember this one. You can’t beat Stevie at all and I can’t wait to listen to this one again!

    • I do hope you get your internet back soon! You do better than I do using your phone! I absolutely HATE trying to type on my phone and I always hit the wrong keys at least a few times. I do hope you can listen soon! Hugs

        • I didn’t know you COULD handwrite on a cell phone!!! After reading your comment, I asked my techie granddaughter who explained to me that some phones have that capability, though not ours. I think I’d be more inclined to try using the voice activated one!

          • Mine will do the voice activated one but it comes out as one long sentence with no end. Tried it a couple of imes but the handwritten one works best. It still gets a few words wrong if I don’t make them clear enough, but is so much easier than trying to hit just one key with my fingers. How do these young kids do it so fast?

            • I don’t handwrite … nothing except my signature, that is. Everything else, I block print … comes from years as an accountant having to squeeze numbers into a tiny spreadsheet! I’m like you … I watch my granddaughter … she can type an entire letter in the time it takes me to just get a single sentence typed!

              • I’ve watched them using their thumbs and going so fast it’s a wonder they get it right. My thumbs cover 3 keys at the same time so no one would ever be able to read what I attempt to write. Someday those thumbs are going to hurt them as much as everything hurts me now (except my thumbs) so I guess it will all work out in the long run
