Just a few things on my mind this afternoon …
This is a paragraph taken from an article in Foreign Affairs magazine about Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro …
“Days ahead of Brazil’s October 2 presidential election, the country is facing the most serious challenge to its democracy since its inception 37 years ago. President Jair Bolsonaro, a former army captain, triumphed in 2018 amid a wave of anti-establishment sentiment but is now trailing in the polls in his showdown against former President Luiz Inácio da Silva, or Lula, as he is universally known. Confronted with probable defeat, Bolsonaro has made unsubstantiated claims about voter fraud and publicly insists that the only way the opposition can prevent him from winning a second term is by stealing the election. His rhetoric is finding favor among his supporters: of the roughly 50 million Brazilians who say they will vote for Bolsonaro, about one-quarter are so radicalized that they have told pollsters the president should not recognize the result if he loses.”
Does this somehow sound familiar to you? Yeah, I thought it might.
“Bolsonaro was one of the last leaders in the world to congratulate Biden after he won the U.S. presidency. Indeed, as an avowed Trumpist, Bolsonaro has frequently suggested that the 2020 U.S. presidential election was stolen.”
This is an election I will be keeping an eye on, for it may be yet another nation, one relatively new to democracy, falling prey to populism, to an egocentric, malicious leader.
This morning I received this text message …
[phone number]”
–I was not only angry, but furious. Why? Because this person or group is preying on those who may be so desperate that they will grasp at any straw that is proffered. Picture that you are a minimum wage worker struggling to pay the rent and feed your family and then one morning you get this text. Okay, most everybody reading this will understand that this is a scam, that if you respond, you will be promised a monetary gift … just give them your bank account information and … POOF … like magic your account will be cleaned out! But about half the people in this country may not understand that, may in fact read the text and think that their god has provided this saint to help them pay the rent that’s due in two days.
I promptly reported it as a scam, then deleted the text, but it angers me that some people, rather than seek an honest way to make a living, prey on those who are neediest. For Pete’s Sake … they should go try to scam the corporate CEOs who can afford to lose a few million dollars and still be able to buy food!
The Nord Stream pipeline is a gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea that runs from the Russian coast near St. Petersburg to north-eastern Germany. On Monday, Danish and Swedish authorities detected underwater explosions in the Baltic Sea that breached the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines designed to carry gas from Russia to Germany. The first explosion was recorded early Monday southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm, said Bjorn Lund, director of the Swedish National Seismic Network. A second, stronger blast northeast of the island that night was equivalent to a magnitude-2.3 earthquake. All indications point to Russia as the instigator of the blasts. Russia has a long history of using gas interruptions as a geopolitical tool. The Kremlin, predictably, denied any responsibility and blamed the U.S. government — as it has previously done for everything from the spread of AIDS during the 1980s to the shooting down of a Malaysian airliner over Ukraine in 2014 by a Russian missile battery.
But never fear … a solution is near {tongue-in-cheek} … and from none other than the twice-impeached former president of the United States on his social media site, Truth Social where there isn’t any truth to be found …
“U.S. “Leadership” should remain “cool, calm, and dry” on the SABOTAGE of the Nord Stream Pipelines. This is a big event that should not entail a big solution, at least not yet. The Russia/Ukraine catastrophe should NEVER have happened, and would definitely not have happened if I were President. Do not make matters worse with the pipeline blowup. Be strategic, be smart (brilliant!), get a negotiated deal done NOW. Both sides need and want it. The entire World is at stake. I will head up group???”
I don’t know whether to laugh or throw up.

It’s sad that the US threw Europe under the bus by sabotaging the pipelines. OF course this benefits the US dollar and US LNG gas exports, Europe is in for some tough times ahead.

Maddie … Earth to Maddie! The U.S. did not throw anybody under any bus and did NOT sabotage the pipelines! Put the conspiracy theories back in the box, Maddie!

Sorry Jill, but it’s conspiracy FACT! There’s live video footage of President Biden threatening to “END” Nord Stream.
https://www.newsweek.com/video-biden-saying-end-nord-stream-resurfaces-after-pipeline-leak-1747005
Several Twitter users shared an ABC News video of Biden from February 7, 2022, discussing Nord Stream 2 and appeared to link his previous remarks with damage to the pipelines.
“Now that Nord Stream has been damaged, Germany will probably have to buy more natural gas from the US at 5x the price,” wrote commentator James Melville.
There’s also live footage of Under Secretary Victoria Nuland also declaring in January before the Ukraine war that the US will “put an end to Nord Stream pipelines one way or another”.
Pretty chilling declarations i would say…..

First, he said he would shut it down, not that he would sabotage it and risk further damage to the environment. He wouldn’t. He didn’t. This is a hoax of the sort the right wing simply love to seize on.
Second, the two Nord Stream lines were not in operation but were filled with tons of methane that began bubbling to the surface following the damage. Russia recently shut off the Nord Stream 1 pipeline as it ramped up energy pressure on Europe. Nord Stream 2 has never been used.
I know that you are smarter than Tucker Carlson and you surely don’t believe this b.s. being promoted by him and other right-wing fools.

I can’t even begin to think how ideas like this spread. Worshipping a man who is willing to use nukes to gain what, an unuseable tract of land that will not produce edible food for the next few centuries, not to mention threatening the lives of every living being on earth, is an exercise in futility. What good is owning a tract of radiation-filled land? What good is wiping out life on Earth? Anyone, including Donald Trump, and Maddie, who believes this buffalo shit needs to have their heads examined.
The Russian people are starting to realize, en masse, just how dangerous Putin is. Something will happen soon — I just don’t know whether it will be for better or for worse.

I’m at a loss to explain it, my friend. Think back, though, to some of Orca Flotta’s comments … she literally licks Putin’s boots! I think that Maddie is just a fan of controversy and conspiracy theories, but Orca truly believes Putin is the best leader in the world! I try to ignore them when they start praising a madman who has the desire to rule the world, but some days I give in to my baser instincts and reply to them. Fact is, Putin has largely decided, I think, that if he cannot rule the entire world, he will make sure there is no world to rule.

And he might get his way. Because there is no negotiating with s madman. Or a madman’s psycophants.

Perhaps, but it’s not looking so good for him at the moment. I will do a happy dance if he is soundly defeated.

And I will sigh with relief. He should be soundly beaten, but stranger things have happened.

Agreed, Jill! Sadly there are too many movies where the Navy Seals just showing this, but in real the US administration would not have any benefits from this. Had anyone thought on people who could earn from an insurance, when such a pipline would fail forever? The old Roman saying (I know i have cited one in another newer posting. Lol) “Cui bono” could be appropriate ;-). xx Michael

You’re right, Michael. And today, people seem to have a difficulty in separating fantasy and fiction from reality. No, there is no benefit whatsoever to the U.S. for doing such a thing, and my best guess is that Putin ordered the sabotage in order to blame the west. He claims that “Anglo-Saxons” did it. I love your old Roman sayings, so two in one night is fine … cool, in fact! And you’re right — who stands to benefit? xx

Jill, Bolsonaro is definitely of the same ilk as the losing former president. Having a modus operandi of untruthful, bullying and corrupt behavior is not something people should strive for as both of these people do. Brazil and the US deserve better than these two. It truly is shameful that they care so little about the people they are supposed to serve. Keith

Two peas in a pod. You’re right … the people of Brazil deserve better, and I am especially concerned on a global level, for Bolsonaro has no respect whatsoever for the Amazon Rainforest which is crucial to life on this planet. And it’s frightening … I read tonight that he has authorized government workers to change ballots … so even if the people of Brazil vote him out … he may not go! This goes beyond the nation’s borders and could have an effect on far more than just Brazil! Sigh. And what happens here in two years? That frightens me as well.
