Saturday Surprise — Squirrels, Squirrels, and … More Squirrels!

I love watching squirrels!  They are so cute, but also personable … we have a few squirrels who pay us a daily visit.  I think it could have something to do with the unsalted peanuts and bird seed we put out each morning.  But they are so much fun to watch, and they are smart critters, too!  They somehow know that the kitties cannot get to them through the window, and they delight in tormenting the kitties!  They stand on the patio table in front of the window on their hind legs and do a little squirrely happy dance, swishing their furry tail from side to side, while the kitties, sitting on the chair in the kitchen window looking out paw the window, growl and whine!  The squirrels, meanwhile, just grin at the kitties!

When I came across this collection of squirrel pics over on Bored Panda, I knew I had to share them with you!  I can think of no better way to cut through the stress and angst of this past week than these cuties!

From the article in Bored Panda …

Did you know Squirrel Appreciation Day is a thing? It’s celebrated every January 21st as an opportunity to learn more about the little rodents, and even if we’re far from that date, it’s always a good time to celebrate these precious balls of fur! Squirrels are pretty awesome, and their cuteness is only matched by the fact they’re quite clever and can form cognitive maps in their heads of the places they store their food.

I’ll never forget the first time I visited London, where I was amazed by the number of cute squirrels in St. James’s Park and how well they tolerated being surrounded by so many people. As naive as I was as a child, I thought the city had a secret squirrel sanctuary! When I investigated some more, I found out squirrels can be incredibly friendly to humans. They have a reputation for curiosity and get interested in what’s going on around them.

For all these reasons and more, squirrels are easy to love. And if you’re a fan of adorable animals like us, you’ll surely appreciate this gallery of squirrel pictures! So scroll down, feast your eyes, and upvote your ultimate favorites!

  1. About a dozen of our squirrels line up, side by side, together, all at once, on top of our privacy fence at about 9 O’clock in the morning each day and stare into our kitchen window as we have breakfast, begging for us to come out and feed them … which we never fail to do.

    • Oh how adorable!!! They do seem to remember where they found food in previous days and return. I had a good laugh the other day when some HUGE birds came to eat the birdseed we also put out, and two little squirrels, about 1/4 the size of the birds, chased them away! I never tire of watching the squirrels!

    • Indeed, animals both wild and domesticated give us so much joy! We have five feline family members, rescue kitties, all with different personas, but all with so much love to give. I cannot imagine living in a household with only humans! I’m glad you enjoyed the squirrels! I usually … not always, but most often … dedicate my Saturday morning posts to animals or street art or something to bring a smile to start the weekend!

  3. Last winter two squirrels moved “into our BBQ!” They fed daily on nuts and seeds from our bird feeder. They disapoeared about May of this year, not sure why or where. After a month of no squirrels I finally opened the BBQ, and it was 3/4 full of grass and leaves, and nuts! They had enough nuts in there to feed an army, but they didn’t bother to eat them because there were always more in the feeder, I guess. We miss the little tykes, they were such fun to watch. We hope they will come back when the snow starts to fall, but we are so afraid they disappeared due to other reasons. I guess only time will tell. (No, there were no signs of babies in the nest. Either they were same sex partners, or one of them was infertile.)

    • How delightful!!! I suspect they disappeared because with the warmer weather they could get berries and nuts wherever they went, but I’m fairly certain they’ll be back with colder weather! I hope so, anyway, for they are such a delight to watch! One of ‘our’ squirrels brought a baby around one time, but other than that, I haven’t seen baby squirrels here … I suspect they happen mostly in spring and are kept in their tree nests until full grown.

  4. I have been watching the squirrels at Mom’s house. Her wooded backyard has a population of squirrels, chipmunks, and a rabbit, along with regular visits from deer, and a groundhog that often emerges from under the shed to ramble through the yard. One bright red squirrel fascinates me, with his fast-moving pace over the logs and branches. But a chipmunk was observed yesterday, leaf in mouth, crossing the back porch. Think he was plotting a nest somewhere. Cardinals also decorate trees on occasion, and bluebirds frequent the lawn for a nibble, too. My wife replies to my descriptions of these things, “It sounds like a Disney film there.”

    Hugs and cheers, M

    • How delightful!!! I think I would never move from the porch, or at least the window, if I lived there! How is your mom doing, by the way? I hope she’s recovering well. Enjoy the wildlife, Michael … take lots of pictures!

      Hugs and cheers, dear friend!

      • Well, I’m assisting Mom, which forces me to leave the porch and window, lol. Thank you for asking after her. She’s doing much better but tires easily and is still rehabbing. Hugs and cheers, my friend.

        • Oh, I’m so glad to hear she’s doing better! Please give her a hug from me … just tell her it’s from a friend. And make time for you, my friend. Take a bit of time to step outside and watch the squirrels, the deer, the birds. It’s truly restorative! Hugs and cheers
