The Republican Party has long claimed to be the party of “law and order”. I have a little problem with that claim, given their behaviour and rhetoric of late. Let’s take a look at just a few of the reasons I think it is a joke that they still attempt to lay claim to that title.
- The biggest threat to law and order today is posed by people toting guns, by guns in the hands of people who should never be within a mile of a firearm. And yet, Republicans steadfastly refuse to legislate any form of gun regulations. They refuse to even talk about a ban on military-style assault weapons that can mow down 30-40 people within a minute. They refuse to put common sense gun laws into effect that would ensure expanded background checks, keep guns out of the hands of domestic violence abusers, make licensing and testing mandatory requirements, and more. Most crimes … apart from white collar crimes … are committed with guns! Doesn’t it make sense to regulate and limit them? Apparently not to the party of ‘law and order’!
- The unofficial ‘head’ of the Republican Party today is the former president Donald Trump who himself has a long history of breaking the law in the areas of tax evasion, civil rights violations, refusing to pay contractors for work done, employment violations, and more. And yet, the Republican Party bows to his will, supports him wholeheartedly, and plans to escort him back into the Oval Office in 2025. And most recently, Republicans are outraged that the FBI executed a lawful search warrant in order to retrieve highly classified documents that Trump literally stole from the White House, stole from We the People. How is that “tough on crime”?
- After the January 6th insurrection/attempted coup which was extremely violent and resulted in multiple deaths and more than 100 injuries to the very law enforcement officers the Republicans supposedly support, the Party whitewashed the events of that day, even though the extreme violence had been recorded by many on video. Republican members of Congress referred to it as a “normal tourist visit”, and said the rioters were simply exercising their right to free speech. Last February, the Republican Party officially passed a resolution declaring that the events of that day were “Legitimate Political Discourse”. They refer to the rioters who have been charged as “political prisoners”. Even the two minority leaders in Congress, Senator Mitch McConnell and Representative Kevin McCarthy, who spoke strongly against Trump and his role in the attempted coup initially, have now turned 180°, supporting Trump and echoing the ‘party line’.
- Some in the party are calling for defunding or even abolishing the FBI, primarily because of the search of Trump’s home to retrieve the aforementioned documents. Others have called for abolishing all federal law agencies!
- Certain Republican legislators have not-too-obscurely incited violence among the masses, with Lindsey Graham saying there would be “riots in the streets if Trump is prosecuted” and Trump himself saying that “Mitch McConnell has a death wish” for Mitch’s participation in an agreement to fund the government through December. Seems to me that the party of law and order would NOT be inciting … law-breaking and disorder!!!
So no, my friends, the Republican Party can no longer lay claim to being the “Law and Order Party” … in fact, they are so far from it that it would be a joke, except there is nothing funny about it. Their claim to be “tough on crime” is convoluted and selective. For example, an unarmed Black man having inadvertently attempted to pay for groceries with a counterfeit bill can be brutally murdered by white police officers and that is ‘law and order’ by the Republican’s definition. But one of their own can do far worse … can incite a riot where lives are lost, and that’s naught more than ‘legitimate civil discourse’ and nobody should pay the price.
I’ve seen hypocrisy throughout my entire life, from small instances to large ones, but I have NEVER seen hypocrisy to the extent the Republican Party of the 21st century practices it. The examples above are but a few of the many I could come up with, but they are the most glaring. They don’t even bother to try to hide their hypocrisy any longer … it’s right out there for everyone to see. Make no mistake … the are the party of Wealth and of Bigotry, but they are NOT the party of law and order!
It is no longer the republican party, but the rethugliCon party 😦

I think we need to begin to face the inevitable….I’m in Fla. and I can see it coming…
My SIL is from a small rural town here and all of her old high school friends, except for a small handful, are big time trumpers, love DeSantis and even Herschel Walker. She is no longer personal friends with them, but is on Facebook, so she sees their posts. She is not a trumper at all.
But I can tell you that every one of them watches Fox News and have for years.
Apathy has allowed this to happen, by having no regulation on news sources that promote lies and conspiracy theories. Also apathy because over the years so many politicians have been involved in some sort of scandal, that people view them all the same. And racists, and people who hate minorities and the poor. And religious nuts who judge gay people and think that have the right to impose their religious views on abortion on all of us. Not to mention people who don’t care one bit about curbing climate change or even believe it’s true.
There’s stupid and then there’s willfully arrogantly stupid just because these people are mean natured and hateful and want to emulate trump’s bulliness and feel powerful like he is. They live vicariously through him and his ilk.
The really sad thing is, we will ALL pay the price for this arrogant stupidity and apathy…and many will never see it or die before it becomes clearly obvious. It will take generations if ever to change.

I sometimes wonder if there really are two separate sub-species within the human species, for I do not recognize the mentality of those who willingly support the likes of Walker, Trump, Greene, and many others too numerous to count. Their efforts to virtually destroy this nation are unconscionable, and any who would support them are obviously either deluded or they actually think that in some way, a dictatorship government would benefit them. You’re right, my friend … we will all pay a price for their perfidy, but they will pay the highest price.

Their ‘laws’ change as it suits them, evolve to discount their own crimes.

Jill, my former party stands for one thing and every thing else is ancillary to that cause. They don’t advertise it to the rank and file Republicans, but it permeates decision-making. What do they stand for? – Giving money to rich people and corporations and helping them keep up. It is why they want conservative judges, to rule in favor of companies when sued. It is why the tax cut of 2018 favored the wealthy and companies. It is why Trickle down economics still is touted, whose failed premise is to give money to rich people and watch it trickle down. It really does not get any simpler than that. Keith

You are so right about their goal of pandering to the wealthy corporations at the expense of the people, and sadly those who vote Republican tend not to understand the facts of the matter. I think there is another thing they stand for, and that is bigotry — racism, certainly, but also misogyny, homophobia, and xenophobia. Perhaps this is a secondary goal for them, but they have instilled the ‘fear of other’ into their followers and then promised to rid the country of those ‘other’, or strip them of their rights so they aren’t a ‘threat’ any longer.

The lieing, cheating, and stealing Repughs don’t care above truth, so to them saying they are the party of law and order is just another tactic to control their followers. And their followers don’t care one iota as long as they are told what they want to hear!

You’re exactly right … as long as they are convinced that these Republican liars are going to turn this into a white, Christian, male-dominated nation, they will follow them wherever they say. The key would be to educate the people, but the Democrats are failing to do that.

All true Jill, and these are all verifiable facts. Unfortunately, millions of low-information voters do not have the intellectual capacity or desire to find the real facts. And, I might add, Democrats fail miserably in this area for failing to point out all the facts you provided in your post. R’s play ads in battleground states telling folks about Dems defunding the police and use racially charged language to do it.
Another hard truth that many Dems fail to mention is that murder rates per capita are worse in Red states.
Once again, Dems allow themselves to be defined by the lying and deceitful tactics of the R’s. When will they ever learn? Instead of giving in to this BS, why not confront them head-on? It angers me Jill, and I feel that these lines of attacks are going to hurt Dems in the key states needed to keep the Senate and the House. SIGH

You’re right on all counts. I am especially disheartened by the lack of response by the Democrats to the Republican b.s. It’s almost as if they believe that the people of this country will have the good sense not to vote for the lying bastards in November, but we all know better … the people have proven that a sizable chunk of them are brainwashed and will vote for whomever Trump et al tell them to. I am gravely concerned that if the Republicans take a majority in one or both chambers of Congress this time, they will direct the 2024 election with partisans in all positions that oversee elections. The nation may never recover form this madness.

For sure. And with so many election deniers running this cycle, the danger for 2024 looms large. I mean, just think if that crackpot Kari Lake wins in Arizona. She’s still, to this day, denying that Biden won. If Trump runs in 2024 and loses in AZ again? Oy Vey. I don’t even want to think of the consequences.

Oooohhhhh … just the mention of that bitch’s name makes me start growling and gnashing my teeth! She should have already been disqualified, but apparently the standards are far lower than they once were. Surely the people of Arizona, people who sent John McCain to Congress, wouldn’t sully their reputations by putting a bitch like Ms. Lake into office … surely they wouldn’t! Sigh.

You’re sarcasm is duly noted! There are enough crackpots running this year to last a lifetime. And Lake ranks either at the top or near it. Arizona will get what they deserve if they elect her.
