I’ve played this one before, but it’s been a couple of years and tonight I just really needed something upbeat and kind of silly to make me smile, so hopefully Clive will forgive me! Listening to this did bring a smile, even if only briefly, but I sure wish I knew his secret for defying gravity like that! I was gonna try it, but the girls both nixed that idea! I wonder if he had some kind of special shoes or an anti-gravity belt?
Written by Richie, Mike Frenchik, and Carlos Rios, the song became a worldwide top ten hit, but not everyone liked it. Critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine said …
“This isn’t entirely a good thing, since it means he indulges in silliness …”
Since when is a bit of silliness not a good thing? Methinks Mr. Erlewine needs to lighten up a bit. Apparently there were others who felt the same, though, for Blender magazine published a list of the “50 worst songs of all time”, with Dancing on the Ceiling listed at No. 20.
It is said that this video cost $400,000 to make! The song charted at #2 in the U.S. and #7 in the UK.
Dancing on the Ceiling
Lionel Richie
What is happening here
Something’s going on that’s not quite clear
Somebody turn on the lights
We’re gonna have a party
It’s starting tonight
Oh, what a feeling
When we’re dancing on the ceiling
Oh, what a feeling
When we’re dancing on the ceiling
The room is hot and that’s good
Some of my friends came by from the neighborhood
The people startin’ a climb the walls
Ooh it looks like everybody is having a ball
Oh, what a feeling
When we’re dancing on the ceiling
Oh, what a feeling
When we’re dancing on the ceiling
Oh, what a feeling
When we’re dancing on the ceiling
Oh, what a feeling
When we’re dancing on the ceiling
Come on!
Everybody start to lose control
When the music is right
If you see somebody hangin’ around
Don’t get uptight
The only thing we want to do tonight
Is go ’round and ’round
And turn upside down
Come on! Let’s get down!
So come on! Let’s get loose
Don’t hold back
‘Cause ain’t no use
Hard to keep your feet on the ground
‘Cause when we like to party
We only want to get down
Oh, what a feeling
When we’re dancing on the ceiling
Oh, what a feeling
When we’re dancing on the ceiling
Oh, what a feeling
When we’re dancing on the ceiling
Oh, what a feeling
When we’re dancing on the ceiling
Say what?
Can’t stop now
Just getting started
Everybody clap your hands
Come on
Everybody let’s dance
Oh, what a feeling
When we’re dancing on the ceiling
Oh, what a feeling
When we’re dancing on the ceiling
Oh, what a feeling
When we’re dancing on the ceiling baby baby
We gonna dance all night

Combine this title with Lionel Ritchie song “All Night Long” Don’t think about Trump then.

Great idea! Any combination of Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder can bring a smile to my face! Not thinking about Trump much at all these days, but I’m more disturbed by the people who seem willing to trade democracy for autocracy, not realizing what they are asking for.

But I suspect you still hold out some hope that Justice will be served.

Some hope, yes, but it grows dimmer by the day.

Are you reading that 800+ page report? Think of what Jack Smith might be going through in such graphic documentation of alleged treasonous crimes.

I’m still reading the 150+ page summary … the holidays have kept my reading time to a bare minimum, but hopefully I can tackle it with more time this week and next. I’ve read several snippets in the news from the full report, though, and I think that Jack Smith will certainly have his work cut out for him, but the committee has done a fabulous job of pulling it all together. I’m not holding my breath, but I do have my fingers crossed that it won’t all have been for naught.

No one it seems has the time or patience to read the full report. I can only trust that Justice Dep’t. will fully use it to charge Trump for his egregious crimes.

I fully plan to read the entire thing, but haven’t had the time as yet. But, I want to know … everything! I do hope the Justice Department follows through and uses the information that the committee worked so hard to compile. Time will tell.

Such a feel good song it should have made Number 1.

I’m so glad you liked it!!! I was surprised actually that it did as well as it did, but I do love it and especially enjoy the video!

It’s funny, when the song got published I was 12 or 13. I did not know what to make of it. I did not like it. Later, when I heard more of Lionel Richie, started liking it because the song was part of my early teenage years… but still, he has much better songs.

Musically, I agree that he has much better, but you have to admit this one is fun to watch! What’s your favourite Lionel Richie song?

There are quite a lot, most of all his love songs. Gosh, they go deep. Once I sang “Hello” at a concert. I don’t know if it is my favorite, but “Goodbye” just popped up in my mind. Soooo moving and always brings tears to my eyes.

Hmmmm … I know “Hello”, but “Goodbye” doesn’t ring a bell … I shall check it out! Stay tuned …

I listened to “Goodbye” just after I replied and cried waterfalls. He wrote that song for his deceased wife. It goes so deep.

I listened to it last night also … too sad! I don’t think I realized he had written it for his deceased wife, and in fact I didn’t know his wife had died! 😢

Yes, very sad. Full of those feelings which may be why it goes so deep.

I love the way you anticipated what was coming! Fun video, awful song!
Why not play the song from which he stole his first two lines?

This video would have been more effective had they been dressed like the people in the street instead of a bunch of straights. (Yes, I know this was a tape, not a video, but today’s kids don’t know the difference. Except for Neil Young these guys could’a been Texas oilmen!)

Times, and outfits, have changed since that video. Still a great song, though.

Agreed. I may yet play it soon, but I checked and just played it last year, so I might wait a while.
