I am a fan of Latin music, and a big fan of Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66, and this is one of my favourites of theirs. I did not even know that Dusty Springfield had recorded it at all, let alone that hers is the more well-known.
According to Burt Bacharach, who wrote this song …
“I had Dusty sing that very sexy. Dusty was very open to suggestions. To listen to the vocal back with her she’d have to go into a control room to hear it. She wanted to hear it alone. She was very tough on herself. But she did a great job.”
The Look Of Love was written by Bacharach for the movie Casino Royale. It was nominated for an Oscar but didn’t win, and Springfield’s version reached only the #22 slot in the U.S. The cover by Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66, however, did become a #4 hit in the US in 1968 after Mendes performed this on the Academy Awards telecast.
Now, since my favourite version hands down is Sergio’s, I shall play it first, but I will also include Dusty Springfield’s for those who prefer it.
The Look Of Love
Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66/Dusty Springfield
The look of love
Is in your eyes
A look your smile can’t
disguise
The look of love
Is saying so much more than
Just words could every say
And what my heart has heard
Well it takes my breath away
I can hardly wait to hold you
Feel my arms around you
How long I have waited
Waited just to love you
Now that I have found you
You’ve got the look of love
It’s on your face
A look that time can’t erase
Baby be mine, tonight
Let this be just the start of
So many nights like this
Let’s take a lovers vow
And seal it with a kiss
I can hardly wait to hold you
Feel my arms around you
How long I have waited
Waited just to love you
Now that I have found you
Don’t ever go
Don’t ever go
I love you so
The look of love
Let this be just the start of
So many nights like this
Let’s take a lover’s vow
And baby we’ll seal it with a kiss
I can hardly wait to hold you
Feel my arms around you
How long I have waited
Waited just to love you
Now that I have found you

Both versions have their appeal, however Dusty has the voice. Nice music choice.

Both versions are good, but Dusty has the voice. Great choice.

I cannot believe I have not heard this song before. I love Dusty Springfield’s version. A little jazzy and very passionate.

I don’t think it was particularly popular outside the U.S., but I’m really glad you enjoyed it!

That would be an explanation. Yes, I like it a lot. That’s why I like it so much when people here share songs 😊

Me too … I’ve heard so many that were new to me since I started doing these music posts about 4 years ago!

I like the both versions. One song two different takes, both playing to their own strengths .
Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66, smooth, cool, ethereal vibe (they did the same with ‘Fool On The Hill- I hated the Beatles’ original)
‘Our Dusty’ trademark soulful with lots of power and heart.
Back to Sergio Medes and Brasil ’66….. ‘Mas que nada’…. never found out what the full translation was (probably a lot would have been lost when dunked into English)…In the original…….Ohhhhh blisssssss!
Thanks Jill for bringing back the memory.

Your opening line took the words right out of my mouth, Sir.
The version are incomparable, in my mind. I see Sergio as light and airy, with visions of magic in the music. Dusty’s is a paean to a lover she cannot believe has come.
My preference is Sergio, I love his music. He took Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass and added just a bit of musical lightheartedness. Something about the Spanish approach to music, I guess.
But back to this post, Jill, I think there might be times I would choose to listen to Dusty, depending on my mood.

Enjoy. Filigree and Shadow is one of my favourites though I love the whole album. Return of the Native was their only Canadian hit that I know of. Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing is notable because it was written in Winnipeg, before Neil left for Toronto and then to California where he gained his fame and fortune.
Just out of curiosity, since we have some simiiar tastes, is Triangle by the Beau Brummels familiar to you?

I knew of them from the earlier ‘Laugh, Laugh’ and the ‘Nuggets’ compilation. Another band with potential which never got the breaks.
On your recommendation here I checked out on YouTube and Wikipedia. Triangle’s history has that familiar ring of ‘Liked by Those In Music, but never qualified for Commercial Airplay’.
Pity, for I did like the title track on the first listen – must make time to listen to the whole album (I think it is on YouTube).
Thanks for the heads-up.👍✌

I had a hunch it wouldn’t be a favourite of yours, and could easily have known you wouldn’t like Sergio’s version. Methinks I’m the only one who favours it. Oh well.
