The New Kid In The Party?

A good governor … and here I am using the term more expansively to include all government decision-makers from state legislators all the way up through the U.S. Congress and even the president … will make every decision based on what is best for the country and for its people – ALL its people, not just white people or male people or Christian people or straight people.  They will sometimes err because they will rarely, if ever, have all the facts upon which to base their decisions, but they will be guided in making decisions by the facts they do have, and their conscience reminding them of their responsibility to the people of the nation.  Federal officials must remember that while they were elected by the people from their state or district, their decisions, their votes and their actions affect every individual within the country, thus they should act accordingly.

I believe there are some in our government who actually do just this, make decisions based on what seems at the time to be in the best interests of the people … ALL the people.  Unfortunately, however, there are more than a few who make their decisions on the basis of what’s in it for them, of their own quest for power, for re-election, for financial gain.  Now, I won’t deny there are some on both sides of the aisle who have forgotten their responsibility, but over the last decade, the Republican Party, aka the GOP, appears to no longer care about either the country or the people.  They have sacrificed integrity.  Their forefathers must surely be doing that proverbial “rolling over in their grave” thing.

I could point to so many, such as Marge Greene who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives despite being a follower of QAnon, despite believing that Jewish space lasers (hint, in case any Republicans are reading this, there ain’t no such thing as Jewish space lasers) started the California wildfires.  Or the pistol-totin’ barhop, Lauren Boebert who proudly put a photo of all her children holding big guns on her Christmas cards.  And then, there’s Kevin McCarthy, vying to be the next Speaker of the House, whose only platform is revenge against any and all liberal democratic policies and those of us who support those policies.  But for now, I want to focus on one incoming member of the House, a person who will be seated in the House of Representatives next Tuesday, a person who has broken the boundaries of dishonesty:  George Santos.

I wrote about Santos just over a week ago, after the New York Times published a laundry list of the lies he has told … everything from his heritage to his education to his work history to his family to his criminal record to his financial situation … and more!  Last week, a day or two before Christmas, Santos was confronted about his lies and said he would talk about it all ‘next week’ … next week now being this week.  Well, he did.  He admitted to most of his lies, claimed the felony convictions against him for theft in Brazil were false, but the documentation proves the lie.  Did he ‘come clean’ with humility and shame?  Nope … just stated as a matter of fact that yes, he lied, but that he still has every intention of taking his seat in the House of Representatives next Tuesday!  The unmitigated gall left me speechless, but only for a moment.

This is a new low even for the Republican Party and if, in fact, they allow him to be seated in the House on Tuesday, it will be the most definitive statement yet that there is no conscience, no morals, no values, and no integrity within the Republican Party.  One lie of any substance would have disqualified any Democratic candidate, but Mr. Santos told lies about every single aspect of his entire 34 years!!!  I imagine there are some Republicans who are wishing they could crawl under a rock right about now – Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Mitt Romney – but the rest seem to be scratching their heads and wondering how to get this out of the news, how to make it disappear.  Not a single word from the otherwise garrulous Kevin McCarthy … funny that.

This is, for the Republicans, as bad a nightmare as the former guy, an egomaniac, planning to run for the Oval Office again.  I would pity the Republicans, but … they brought this mess on themselves when they first began letting unqualified circus clowns run for office.  It seems to me that a person who cannot even be relied upon to tell the truth about where he went to college (he didn’t), property he claims to own (but doesn’t), where he has worked, his ancestry, his criminal past, where he lives, cannot possibly be trusted to be an honest lawmaker!  I thought Herschel Walker told some mighty big lies, but Santos even makes him look like an amateur.  Santos is right up there with the former guy, who wouldn’t recognize the truth if it smacked him upside the head!  This is NOT what this nation needs … lawmakers who cannot ever be trusted, whose words and actions must always, always be fact-checked!  But alas, this is the new GOP – which, by the way, no longer stands for “Grand Old Party”, but rather for “Gaslight Or Perjure.”

  1. wow, we agree on the deplorable nature of a candidate. this lying jerk has no business representing anyone and how people in new York could vote for such a horrible person, I’ll never understand. If someone has to lie this much to enter into politics, perhaps it’s a field which would be better off without the presence of such an individual.
We know that all politicians lie to some degree, but to lie about almost everything? Where is the honor in politics? Where is the dignity? Where is the decency? If this dude is sworn in, it sadly demonstrates that all three of these much needed attributes are absent from the profession, at least in whatever district he claims to want to represent the people.

    • Wow … I’ll mark this day on my calendar that we agreed on something! Joking aside, it’s really funny, because a local (New York) media outlet actually published a story about some of Santos’ lies back in September, two months before the election, but it went largely unnoticed. He will almost certainly be sworn in, but I don’t think he can last out his term … but at this point, there is a process that must be followed to expel him, and the Republicans, with their very slim majority, are going to be unwilling to do this, I think. His latest lie is that his mother died in the Towers on 9/11, when she actually died in 2016 of cancer. That disgusts me even more than his other lies!

  2. I am not them!
I was chopping wood in the yard one day when the neighbor’s boy passed by. I went into the house for a bit of coffee and when I returned to the yard my axe had been torn from the block and I caught a glimpse of the thief as he turned the bend. I found my axe behind the door where I had carelessly left it and saw the neighbors child upon his way home.
Judgement is best left for the already damned.
    I am not the other!

      • Only 70 years. Long ago someone convinced me that I (if I was afraid enough) could make a final judgement. They were wrong. Sadness waxes and wanes but it has yet to go away.
My Dad, “Don’t get caught but don’t think you’ll get away with it!”
Just be careful is all, it is just an assumption that we only have 100 years.

  3. It may turn out that Santos’s money issues (highly questionable) and/or nationality (a possible quote-illegal alien-unquote) will take the matter out of the invertebrate Republicans’ hands. Wouldn’t that be a kick!

    • Indeed, I will not be at all surprised to find that one or both of those issues doom his ability to remain in the House. And from all I’m reading, if a new election is held in his district, the winner will almost certainly be a Democrat, narrowing the Republican’s majority even more. Yep, I would get a huge kick out of that! I’d like to see McCarthy’s face when he loses yet another seat!

  4. This is NOT (in any way) meant to be a statement of support for Santos … BUT! At least he admitted he lied. Herschel Walker never did … and yet, ALMOST got elected. The morals of the Republican Party astound.

    • Yes, he admitted it, but really what choice was there when the evidence was right there for the world to see? And he did it in such a flippant manner … rather like saying, “Yeah, I lied … so what?” and then flipping us all a big middle finger when he arrogantly proclaimed he’s taking his seat anyway. Oh how I’d love to see him brought down about 20 notches! Morals of the Republican Party? They have none.

  5. I believe that he has to be sworn in by law. The House can then vote to expel him. Given the GOP will be the majority, I doubt they will even attempt to hold a vote to expel him. That would open the GOP up to having to vote on 14th Amendment applying to members actively involved with J6. The GOP is not a responsible party.

    • Given the very narrow margin by which the GOP has a majority in the House, odds are they will try hard to keep him in his seat, but if the investigations prove what I think they might, it will become a moot point and he will be expelled. No, Bro, the GOP is no longer a responsible or even honest political party any more. At one time, I thought that once Trump was out of office, they would step back and try to undo some of the damage, rebuild the party, but instead they sunk even further.

  6. Jill, regardless of party, the party must police itself of people who denigrate the office. When they don’t, they damage the whole. The Catholic Church failed to learn this lesson until way too late. Michigan State, Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State universities failed to learn this lesson. If this is the image of your party you want, then you are doing a disservice to the voters. Full stop. Keith

    • Fully agree. When they fail to police themselves, they lose respect. It seems today, though, that the GOP is willing to sacrifice respect … in fact, in so many ways they already have. GOP leadership is silent on the matter of Santos because if he isn’t seated, if there is another election to replace him within his district, odds are strong that a Democrat will win and with their slim majority, they won’t sacrifice a single seat if they can help it. Hopefully, the investigations that are being done on Santos will give justifications for unseating him, but I’m not holding my breath.

  8. Surely, there are, still some (a minority) politicians, with the higher moral standards, the integrity, but these are numbered, as most of the politicians only thinks about getting themselves re-elected into office, and to continue to have power, to rule over the people, to, abuse the power that’s been endowed to them, by their, constituents, thinking that we the people, are too stupid, to allow them to abuse us, until these sons-of-whatevers get ousted from their seats, they will never learn, and chances are, we the people, won’t vote them out, and so, the vicious cycle, continues, rolling…

    • I’m sure there are some, but within the Republican Party they are very few. You’re right … their one and only goal from the day they take office is working toward re-election 2 or 6 years later. It is a slap in the face to the people of this nation.

  9. He’s trying to fake so he can make it, and so far he has it made. Free money, or at least that’s how GOPers treat it. Amazing benefits. All because he lied his way into Congress. Is he even an American citizen? Can non-Americans run for election? America, the land of opportunity!

    • He’s being investigated at the state and federal level, so he may not have that stupid grin on his face much longer. There is a question about his citizenship … he claims he was born in the U.S. to Brazilian parents, but there is speculation that he was actually born in Brazil. It is not a requirement for Congress that a person be born in the U.S., as it is for president, but citizenship is a requirement. Now, if Santos is removed form his seat because of illegal activities, a new election will be held in his district, where it is a near-certainty a Democrat would win, so you know the Republicans are going to do everything, including lie, cheat, and steal, to keep him in his seat, given their very narrow majority.
