In response to my playing of John Denver’s Calypso yesterday, our friend Clive commented:
“The best thing about this for me was the montage YouTube give us at the end of the song! Gordon Lightfoot, S&G, Juice Newton, The Monkees, Glen Campbell, and the mix of ‘Take It Easy Rock.’ Some possible suggestions for you there, I think.”
Sometimes I’m a bit slow on the uptake, but I got his message, so naturally I went in search of! I figured I’d start at the beginning of the list, and the first one I hit on was this, by Gordon Lightfoot. Luckily, I’ve only played this once, almost exactly 4 years ago in February 2019. So, this one’s for you, Clive!
There is almost no trivia I can find on this one by Gordon Lightfoot, other than when he was once asked who his rainy day people are, he replied ….
“That one is so easy, it’s the family. It’s the extended family. They are the rainy day people.”
I read the lyrics, listened to the music, and … I have lots of ‘rainy day people’ … if you are reading this today, you’re most likely one of them, and I thank you from the core of my being. Love ‘n hugs to you all …
Rainy Day People
Gordon Lightfoot
Rainy day people always seem to know when it’s time to call
Rainy day people don’t talk
They just listen till they’ve heard it all
Rainy day lovers don’t lie when they tell you
They’ve been down like you
Rainy day people don’t mind if you’re cryin’ a tear or two
If you get lonely, all you really need is that rainy day love
Rainy day people all know there’s no sorrow
They can’t rise above
Rainy day lovers don’t love any others
That would not be kind
Rainy day people all know how it hangs
On their peace of mind
Rainy day lovers don’t lie when they tell you
They’ve been down there, too
Rainy day people don’t mind if you’re cryin’ a tear or two
Rainy day people always seem to know
When you’re feelin’ blue
High stepping strutters who land in the gutters
Sometimes need one, too
Take it or leave it or try to believe it,
If you’ve been down too long,
Rainy day lovers don’t hide love inside, they just pass it on
Rainy day lovers don’t hide love inside, they just pass it on

Lightfoot is known as Canada’s singing troubadour, story-teller and historian. His ballads are beautiful, and usually very timely.
The song I am choosing to offer your readers today is one that is hardly played anymore. Ron deSantis never wants to hear it again, so I am dedicating it to him.

That’s one I hadn’t ever heard before, surprisingly! Of course DeSantis doesn’t want to hear that ever again … heh heh … perhaps I’ll post it on his website, just for him! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Apparently he hates Black people … a pity, considering nearly 50% of his state are either Black, Hispanic, or Asian.

Jill, this is one of my favorite songs by a great artist, Gordon Lightfoot. I have written before, this is one of two songs that embody my wife. My wife is the best of listeners and the first stanza defines her interest in listening and helping people. For the record, the last stanza of “Danny’s Song” written by Kenny Loggins is the other song. It begins “Love a girl who holds the world in a paper cup…” Thanks, Keith

I’m so glad you enjoyed this one! I had planned another by Gordon Lightfoot for today, but then David Crosby died and I decided to play a few of CSN&Y first. Your tribute to your wife is beautiful! Few men, after so many years of marriage, still speak so lovingly of their wives. I still hope to meet you and your wife someday.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Yes, summer rain only! Winter rain is cold and unwelcoming, usually turning to ice or snow! Brrrrrrrrrrr. xx

What a lovely song. It is interesting, it makes me melancholic and smile at the same time.

I think I mentioned a fixed bicycle elsewhere. Let me share this with you. Last year I started getting high heart frequence, pulse, out of the blue. Any time. up then down. I went to see a cardiologist. He examined me and asked: “Did you get COVID?”. I raised my eyebrows and said: “Yes. In London. This summer. A 3 days mild cold.” He them told me that there were reports of heart consequences with COVID. It’s not tachycardy. Rhythm is regular, just the pulse goes up for a while and then goes back down. Prescription: 15-20 minutes fixed bicycle a day. (Which is a damn bore BTW)
Have you talked about that that with your cardiologist? Can it help you regain strength?

I’m so sorry to hear you’re having problems with your heart, too! Is that what they mean by “long Covid”? I will mention it to the doc next time, but as I said, I have no room for a fixed bicycle in this cluttered, tiny apartment!

No, long COVID is much, much serious. Some people keep very serious issues for months or more. My “stuff” is. minor.
One square meter? My wife has hers inside her closet. LOL.
