I was just trippin’ through the archives tonight, seeking a song that would strike a chord somewhere in my befuddled mind, and when I came across this one, I sat up a bit straighter and something inside me said, “YEAH!!!!” I knew then that I had found what I was looking for!
Cat Stevens, nee Steven Demetre Georgiou, is a British singer/songwriter. I have a confession to make … I did not know he was British! I’ve always loved this song … it is on my ‘walking’ playlist, as it gets me going faster than some and adds a bit of bounce to the steps.
Stevens tells why he wrote the song …
“I was trying to relate to my life. I was at the point where it was beginning to happen and I was myself going into the world. I’d done my career before, and I was sort of warning myself to be careful this time around, because it was happening. It was not me writing about somebody specific, although other people may have informed the song, but it was more about me. It’s talking about losing touch with home and reality – home especially.”

Yusuf Islam – 2008
In 1978, Stevens converted to Islam, changed his name to Yusuf Islam, and abandoned his musical career, saying that it had “becoming a chore, and not an inspiration anymore”. Today, he uses his ongoing royalties for philanthropic works, and has founded several schools and Small Kindness charity, which initially assisted famine victims in Africa and now supports thousands of orphans and families in the Balkans, Indonesia, and Iraq.
There is a considerable amount of controversy surrounding this artist, but this is a post about the music, and not a place to delve into controversy. And so … let us enjoy the music …
Wild World
Cat Stevens
Now that I’ve lost everything to you
You say you want to start something new
And it’s breaking my heart you’re leaving
Baby, I’m grieving
But if you want to leave, take good care
Hope you have a lot of nice things to wear
But then a lot of nice things turn bad out there
Oh baby baby it’s a wild world
It’s hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh baby baby it’s a wild world
I’ll always remember you like a child, girl
You know I’ve seen a lot of what the world can do
And it’s breaking my heart in two
‘Cause I never want to see you sad girl
Don’t be a bad girl
But if you want to leave take good care
Hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there’s a lot of bad and beware
Beware
Oh baby baby it’s a wild world
It’s hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh baby baby it’s a wild world
And I’ll always remember you like a child, girl
Baby I love you
But if you want to leave take good care
Hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there’s a lot of bad and beware
Beware
Oh baby baby it’s a wild world
It’s hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh baby baby it’s a wild world
And I’ll always remember you like a child, girl
Oh baby baby it’s a wild world
And it’s hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh baby baby it’s a wild world
And I’ll always remember you like a child, girl

My fave Cate Stevens song was Lady D’Arbanville. First I ever heard as a small girl and he was never better than there and then.

I don’t recall that one … I’ll go check it out in a bit!

My teenie girl always thought it was his greatest hit. Sure the only song of his you could hear on public radio.

I just listened to it and it was hauntingly beautiful, but such a sad, sad song!

He converted to Islam, go figure. 😐

True, but I think there was more to it than that … I vaguely remember, but don’t recall the details.

I too love this. I was so young then and so proud of my English…. at that time, you could even understand the lyrics sung by those artists!

Oh I’m so glad you love this one!!! Yes, I remember the days when they actually sang words that people could understand!!! Methinks we are showing our age, my friend!

That, or lack of English of this gal here at the time – when it was definitely a bonus to actually understand what was sung. Thinking of which, how often can I say I understand what‘s being said nowadays; more often I‘m just spellbound by the video ‚going with the song‘.

I remember the days before YouTube when there was no such thing as a video to accompany it … you judged the song by the music alone, not the theatrics! 😉

Great lyrics, great voice, great artist. It’s been awhile since I’ve heard some Cat; gonna have to remedy that.

Me too, my friend! Glad you liked it … any others you’d like to hear by him?

One of the best songs by my favourite singer-songwriter. I’ve loved the album since I bought it, shortly after it came out, and it is still my ‘go to’ record when I need some musical comfort. I met him some years ago – lovely guy.

I don’t think I knew that he was your favourite singer/songwriter! Where & how did you meet him — at a concert? I’m extra glad I chose this one to play last night!

Has been ever since his 1970 comeback after the illness that nearly killed him. The NHS Trust I worked for did some project work with the school he ran in N London and I met him through that. It was in the days before he made his latest comeback and I told him I was a fan. He replied that he might return – I think I heard it first! Almost met him again at a concert but the last backstage pass went to someone else. It was a great choice!

I had forgotten that he had TB way back when. I don’t think I knew he ran a school, though. I’m really glad you got to meet him! How exciting that must have been!

The TB nearly killed him but the songs he wrote in that time were what brought about his change of style. He had a lot stored up: this was his second album in six months since the comeback. Schools have been part of his charitable works since his conversion, and it was interesting to see them and him at work.

I learn more from you than I do from Wikipedia! I’m liking Cat Stevens more and more, hearing the good he has done in this world. Thanks, Clive!

He was, in his words, misquoted when speaking about the notorious Salman Rushdie novel and got a lot of unfair criticism for it. Typical Islamophobia in my view. He has done much good with his charitable works.

Ahhhhhh …. yes, I vaguely remember now. Sigh. From everything I’ve read about Cat Stevens/Yusuf, he is a good person with humanitarian values. More than I can say for some of our ‘leaders’ today!

Thanks Jill. He is so very talented by any name. Rod Stewart did a couple of his songs, so that is where I made the British link. One of our favorite long car trip CDs is a double album of his greatest hits. Keith

I’ll have to listen to some of his others, for I don’t remember very many. I agree, though, that his is very talented. Glad you enjoyed this one!

One of his best.

I don’t know if you ever heard “I’m Gonna Get Me A Gun”https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27m_Gonna_Get_Me_a_Gun
Interesting facts about that one was that there was an outcry in the UK about promoting the use of firearms.
The publicity machine promptly claimed it was simply one song of an intended ‘Opera / Musical’ about ‘The Wild West’ and then Cat Stevens was careful to always wear a Stetson when performing that song on TV.
Naturally the opera / musical never appeared, and it’s not one gets played or performed these days.
Here’s an alternative explanation for the song.https://www.songfacts.com/facts/cat-stevens/im-gonna-get-me-a-gun
It was not one of his best by any means.
(Bring on ‘Moonshadow’ I say)

I was rather taken aback by SongFacts referring to a song about guns and killing as a “lighthearted song”!!! I listened to just a little of it and decided I didn’t care for it. Haven’t heard Moonshadow, but I added it to my list!

Yeah…dumb, someone doesn’t read the news much do they?
Back in that time of the UK 60s the music writing folk record buying kids didn’t really pay that much attention to some of the stuff they were writing.
One of the worst examples being McCartney’s appalling ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer’…No folks it was not dark humour because of its jaunty tune, it was a thoughtless piece of trash.

Apparently not!
I hadn’t heard “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” so I went to SongFacts to learn a bit more, listen, and read the lyrics. GOOD GRIEF!!! What was Paul thinking? And how on earth can SongFacts refer to this as a “lighthearted song about a murderer”? 🙄

Agreed.
Some folk in Songfacts need a swift slap in the face with Reality.
There are no light-hearted 🤬 murders.
As for Paul, from time to time he was prone to not being in touch with Reality himself.

No, I’ve never thought of murder as something to laugh and joke about. But then, I am a ‘snowflake’ … a ‘libtard’ … or so they tell me. And … aren’t we all out of touch with reality from time to time? Maybe that’s not a bad thing … maybe it helps us keep our perspective.

Gee I wish someone would call be a libtard, I would love to reply.
You are right though Jill. It can be carefully crafted in Dark Humour themes and is a staple of comedy throughout the ages…..
That said, like most things you have to be, repeat be careful with it
It’s become a morbid throwaway in many a thriller or ‘murder mystery’ book with writers trying to up the ante with child death and of course women victims of serial killers. It also desensitises readers. There are really victims, friends and relatives out there for Pity’s Sake.

I usually just bite my tongue, though these days it gets harder and harder to do. It’s a good thing I don’t leave the house often, for in my current mood, I think I might just punch someone and end up in jail!
You’re so right … it does desensitize readers … we become inured to violence and it no longer horrifies us as it should. Did you hear about the Alaska legislator who said that when abused children die, at least it saves the taxpayers money? Can you imagine somebody saying that 20 years ago? Why, they would have been run out of town on a rail! But today … ???
