Per a former Republican Governor and EPA Administrator GOP response to climate change is “mindless” (a repeat post)

Ron DeSantis, governor of the state of Florida, is not a very smart man. Florida is the single most vulnerable state in these times of climate change and rising ocean waters. And yet … DeSantis doesn’t focus on that at all, he’s too busy focusing on what he refers to as “wokeness”. And then, there’s his battle with Disney World, the single largest employer and single largest tourist attraction in the state. The economy of Florida is dependent on its tourist industry … namely its beaches and Disney World. Instead of protecting these, DeSantis is demeaning them. Smart move … not. Our good friend Keith has more on this …

I wrote this post nine years ago. And, yet we have some elected officials who are still touting a fossil fuel funded PR campaign that denies or diminishes climate change. We have some Republicans who are purposefully focusing on things like wokeness, book language and themes, critical race theory rather than real threats right in front of us. It is telling that four leaders in the GOP are in Florida (former president, governor and two US senators) where the fact the state is surrounded on three sides by water, is under consistent hurricane threat and has the city with the most risk in the world to sea level rise seems not to matter as long as we pound on Disneyworld for trying to be open-minded.

The above quoted phrase is from an interview with former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman who was the keynote speaker at the Charlotte Chamber’s…

  1. There’s mo use in demeaning Disney, those doofuses are perfectly capable of doing that themselves. Did you peek into the Star Wars convention? They are doubling down on all their mistakes and will only stop when they are broke!

    • Whether you like Disney or not, they are still the largest single source of income for the state of Florida. No, I had no idea there was such a thing as a Star Wars convention … I’ve never even seen a single Star Wars movie!

        😮
        I’m shocked! Hear that? SHOCKED!
When Disney bought Lucas Film and with it the Star Wars franchise it was a mega profit creator … and Disney’s management and particularly the bish Kathleen Kennedy phukked it all up. Now they can’t even sell the toys.

        • Ah well, I rarely watch any movies because of my hearing issues, and don’t pay attention to the news of box office issues, or pop culture. I do like Disney … the REAL Disney … ie, Mickey Mouse, The Little Mermaid, etc.

  2. Jill, many thanks for the reblog. The city of Miami Beach has an increased and tangible number of days of sunny day flooding with ocean water coming up from the street drains. Plus, the Biscayne Aquifer is guarded by porous limestone, so encroaching sea water will breach this fresh water source. I have seen separate interviews of an American and a Swedish climate change scientists who both said Miami is the most at risk city in the world to climate change. Keith

    • Wouldn’t you think that news would have the people in Florida demanding action by their leaders, or else ousting their leaders and electing those with better sense and a sense of responsibility to future generations?

      • Jill, what I find interesting is Dade (Miami’s county) and three other counties pooled $200 million a few years ago to stave off rising seas. If the state had at least matched that funding and increased awareness, they could have sought federal funding and made a more material difference.

If you saw the movie “Reminiscence” with Hugh Jackman, Miami is underwater. That is not too unreal. Keith

        • No, I haven’t seen that movie, but just now watched a trailer of it. Scary. We humans will sit around debating the veracity of climate change and the potential solutions, while nature goes on about her business until one day we realize we waited too late.
