I was still in the mood for some more Stevie, even after playing Ebony and Ivory last night, so I dug through my archives and realized I’ve only played this once and that was a long time ago … three years, I think! So … without further ado …
Pastime Paradise was first released on Songs in the Key of Life, which has become Stevie Wonder’s most highly praised album. Michael Jackson considered it Wonder’s best, whilst Elton John told interviewers it was “the best album ever made,” a sentiment shared by many in the listening public.
When one thinks of Stevie Wonder, “joy” is the operative word, but in Pastime Paradise the synthesizer strings – one of the first novel attempts at using this sort of string-synthesis in a song – create an edgy atmosphere of anxiety, substantiated by the lyrics which are insistently negative in tone until the final stanza. A combination of issues, from race and religion to the economy are vaguely alluded to by using catchwords like “Race Relations” and “Exploitation” without any further explanation. Anyone that would have been hearing these words in 1976 at the tail-end of the Black Power movement (1965-1975) would know exactly what they were referring to. However, Wonder’s final statement defines the actual message of the song: “Let’s start living our lives, living for the future paradise,” as opposed to living in the unhappy past, or the illusory future in order to escape present social issues.
Pastime Paradise
Stevie Wonder
They’ve been spending most their lives
Living in a pastime paradise
They’ve been spending most their lives
Living in a pastime paradise
They’ve been wasting most their time
Glorifying days long gone behind
They’ve been wasting most their days
In remembrance of ignorance oldest praise
Tell me who of them will come to be
How many of them are you and me
Dissipation
Race relations
Consolation
Segregation
Dispensation
Isolation
Exploitation
Mutilation
Mutations
Miscreation
Confirmation, to the evils of the world
They’ve been spending most their lives
Living in a future paradise
They’ve been spending most their lives
Living in a future paradise
They’ve been looking in their minds
For the day that sorrows gone from time
They keep telling of the day
When the savior of love will come to stay
Tell me who of them will come to be
How many of them are you and me
Proclamation
Of race relations
Consolation
Integration
Verification
Of revelations
Acclamation
World salvation
Vibrations
Stimulation
Confirmation, to the peace of the world
They’ve been spending most their lives
Living in a pastime paradise
They’ve been spending most their lives
Living in a pastime paradise
They’ve been spending most their lives
Living in a future paradise
They’ve been spending most their lives
Living in a future paradise
We’ve been spending too much of our lives
Living in a pastime paradise
Let’s start living our lives
Living for the future paradise
Praise to our lives
Living for the future paradise
Shame to anyone’s lives
Living in the pastime paradise

I had all his solo albums, including this one. My favourite album of his is still ‘Innervisions’.
Best wishes, Pete.

In the space of twenty four hours you’ve gone from the ridiculous to the sublime, with the same artist! Brilliant song, superb album. Ripped off by Coolio, but the source of a wonderful homage/parody version:

Wow … that’s quite a distance, from the ridiculous to the sublime! And all in just a short 24 hours, too! I’m glad you liked this one better … I thought you might. And I LOVE that Weird Al Yankovic video … that was fun and made me laugh!!! Thank you!

It is up there with his best. As is the Weird Al one. I love the way he managed to get in a Prince reference too, with the “tonight we’re gonna party like it’s 1699” line 😊

Definitely a fun video (Weird Al)!!! I think I’ll watch it again now!

He has made some very funny videos, but I think this is probably my favourite. A word of caution, though: if you ever want to play one on your blog embedding them isn’t allowed. You have to seek out unofficial uploads. Been there, T-shirt etc.

Really? Then I probably won’t bother, but if I ever do try, I’ll seek out your advice! Or else just put a link to it, but most people don’t bother with clicking on the link, as we’ve discussed before.

That’s the trouble with links, isn’t it. I only use them for alternatives to songs which may not play due to copyright: Eagles, I’m looking at you!

Yes, I’m always amazed … even when I do a reblog, I’ll get 20+ “likes” on the post, but only 3 people actually clicked on the link to read the entire post!

That’s why I tend to copy and paste into a new post!

That is the more efficient way, but then it denies the post’s author of the views, likes, and comments. Then again, if nobody is following the link anyway … 🤷

I only do that with my own posts, and I rarely reblog anyone else’s anyway. It gets a whole new set of likes and comments that way 😊

Ah yes, with one’s own posts, there are no rules of courtesy! I usually only reblog my music posts, but in those I do put the entire text, not just a link.

Same here. I usually top and tail the earlier post. It saves writing a new one!

Yep, I usually top ’em, change the lead paragraph, and let the rest speak for itself, unless I’ve learned something new by then. Sometimes I glean some new knowledge from the comments first time around, and include it in the redux.

I had no idea this was the “template” to “Gangster’s Paradise”. Wow, I love this one so much more although I heard it for the first time.

Wow! I can’t believe I introduced you to something new in music, for you are far more knowledgeable than I am! I’m really glad you enjoyed it!

Definitely not necessarily regarding the music before I was born or close after.

So, you weren’t already listening to music in the womb, eh? 😉

Maybe I was, but I think my mom wasn’t listenting to all the songs published during that time… lol

🤣 No, she was probably like my mom, listening to Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin!

Haha! Yes, too! But also to The Beatles, Conny Francis, Pat Boone & Co. 🤣

Ahhhh … the old crooners! I remember my mother absolutely hated the Beatles when they first appeared here! Called it “just so much noise” … and here we are, some 60 years later, and that is exactly what I’m saying about today’s music!
