No Pony In This Show

I don’t care what Donald Trump has to say about the tentative debt ceiling agreement reached between President Biden and Kevin McCarthy, nor do I give a rat’s arse what Ron DeSantis thinks of it.  Neither of them are the president, neither are sitting in Congress, nor are they likely to be either.  They are, therefore, irrelevant to the discussion!  The unfortunate truth is that at this point, the only people whose opinions are relevant are the 535 members of Congress whose majority approval is required to pass this bill and save the nation from an extremely consequential default on its debt.

Is this a good bill?  Hell no!  The debt ceiling should have been lifted without consequence, without conditions.  The debt ceiling is simply the device that allows us to pay the debts we have already incurred through the years. Period. Budget negotiations are intended to be separate from paying the debt, but in this day of political polarization and obstructionism on one side of the aisle, that was not to be.  I am frustrated over the concessions that President Biden had to make, especially in three areas:  the environment, food stamp work requirements, and taxes/IRS funding. But, I realize that given the time frame and the crucial importance of raising the debt ceiling, there was no other viable option.  I would, if I were a member of Congress, voice my disgust, my protest, but I would vote for this bill, because the alternative would be so much worse … for everyone.

People like Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis are what I think of as pseudo-politicos because their actual understanding of governance, of how government is intended to operate, is nil.  Furthermore, they don’t care … they are politicians, not governors nor leaders in any sense of the word.  Their only focus is on winning the next election, on pulling the wool over the eyes of enough people with their lies and loud voices to gain or maintain a high-level office with its built-in power, privileges, and potential for greater wealth.  They need to shut up, but since they won’t, then the media needs to refuse to give them a voice.

I’ve said it so many times that I think I say it in my sleep: ‘Rights’ like the freedom of speech and freedom of the press, are always accompanied by responsibilities.  The responsibility of the press is to tell the truth, not to tell people what they want to hear, or what the politicians want them to hear, but instead to tell them what they need to hear:  the truth.  Nobody … NOBODY needs to hear what a twice-impeached former president posts on his private social media outlet.  And if Trump or DeSantis wish to campaign for next year’s election, then fine, but they need to keep their message one of what they plan if they should win, not weigh in on what is happening now that really is none of their business beyond the extent to which it is the business of us all. They have no pony in this show.

  1. The nemesis of politics –and politicians– will continue as is no matter how ugly or unfair or distasteful or disgusting it is to those of us who possess higher moral standards. Why? Because too many have allowed it to be so and not enough have taken up the weapons to fight.

  2. Jill, there is a key message about the two GOP front runners for the presidential nomination.
Donald Trump signed and Congressman Ron DeSantis voted for a tax bill that INCREASED the US debt by about $2 trillion in late December, 2017 and January, 2018. The word INCREASED is capitalized as we should not forget this lack of stewardship. It is easy to pass a tax reduction, but the focus of this bill was the wealthy and corporations. And, to the White House surprise the tax reduction made a pretty good economy a little better for a little while before it fell back. Their surprise is most publicly traded companies bought back stock rather than invest it, which is not accretive to the economy. Keith

    • Indeed so! The corporate tax cuts indreased the debt, and then along came Trump and increased it with his spending, and then along came Covid. Covid couldn’t be helped, but the tax cuts for the wealthy and much of Trump’s spending are certainly prime examples of poor stewardship. Another four years of Trump would bankrupt this nation. Period.

  3. Thank you for sharing!… Again it is back to the people as Trump, Desantis and others are simply telling their supporters what they wish to hear, caring little for America as a whole, while trying to get elected… in the past when one didn’t like the environment one were living in, one could pack the covered wagon and find a isolated place to create their own environment, today one cannot do that…so the people/supporters Trump and others are catering to are trying to create their own version of America where they are.. 🙂
There is a lot the people can do without having Congress pass laws or waiting for someone to tell them what to do, but only if the people want to “Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” (Barack Obama )… 🙂

Hope all is well in your part of the universe and until we meet again..

May the sun shine all day long
Everything go right, nothing go wrong
May those you love bring love back to you
And may all the wishes you wish come true

    • Yes, as always, it rests on the shoulders of the people to vote conscionably and to educate themselves on the issues and candidates, but sadly … they don’t! Which leaves those of us who are capable of thinking, who seek a more compassionate, caring world, out in the cold. We write, we protest, we try to educate, but at the end of the day it seems our voices are reaching too few. I fully agree with Obama’s statement. Thanks so much for the Irish Saying, dear Dutch!

    • “Could not President Biden have gone the Route of Amendment 14 and pushed the debt ceiling payments through without Congress and the GOP having a say?”

Yes, he could have tried that. But it would have caused enormous political turmoil. So he made the judgement that it was not worth the trouble that it would stir up.

    • As a last resort, it would be better than a default, BUT … it would cause so much more turmoil and chaos than we already have, would almost certainly lead to President Biden’s impeachment, and I fear much violence across the land. That’s why Biden decided against using the 14th Amendment, though he might if it is the only remaining solution by mid-week next week. Fingers crossed that Congress can agree to the deal that is in front of them. Cwtch

  5. The United Conservative Party were re-elected today in Alberta. They lost some seats, but not enough to matter. Only the people in Edmonton and Calgary elected Social Democrat candidates. The rest of Redneck Alberta went with the status quo. These will be sorry times for the people of Alberta. UhChyPoo!
