I last played this in January 2020, and I have no idea why I’m playing it again tonight, but for some reason I had it on my list, so … either somebody requested it, or it got stuck in my head one day and I jotted it down but failed to jot down the reason!
Released in February 1980, this is a song by the Australian soft rock group Air Supply. The song was written by Graham Russell & Clive Davis. In the United States, it reached #2, and in the UK, where it was the only Air Supply song to make it to the top 40, it reached #11.
An interesting bit of trivia … The chorus was originally “I’m all out of love, I want to arrest you”. However, Clive Davis thought that Americans wouldn’t understand what that meant (he was right … I’m still scratching my head over it) so he suggested “I’m all out of love, I’m so lost without you”. This is why he has a songwriting credit.
The song is known for vocalist Russell Hitchcock holding the final note for 16.2 seconds. This was the longest-held note for a male pop singer until 1983, when Sheriff lead vocalist Freddy Curci held the final note of When I’m with You for 19.4 seconds.
All Out of Love
Air Supply
I’m lying alone with my head on the phone
Thinking of you till it hurts
I know you hurt too but what else can we do
Tormented and torn apart
I wish I could carry your smile and my heart
For times when my life seems so low
It would make me believe what tomorrow could bring
When today doesn’t really know, doesn’t really know
I’m all out of love, I’m so lost without you
I know you were right believing for so long
I’m all out of love, what am I without you
I can’t be too late to say that I was so wrong
I want you to come back and carry me home
Away from this long lonely nights
I’m reaching for you, are you feeling it too
Does the feeling seem oh so right
And what would you say if I called on you now
And said that I can’t hold on
There’s no easy way, it gets harder each day
Please love me or I’ll be gone, I’ll be gone
I’m all out of love, I’m so lost without you
I know you were right believing for so long
I’m all out of love, what am I without you
I can’t be too late to say that I was so wrong
Oh, what are you thinking of
What are you thinking of
What are you thinking of
What are you thinking of
I’m all out of love, I’m so lost without you
I know you were right believing for so long
I’m all out of love, what am I without you
I can’t be too late I know I was so wrong
I’m all out of love, I’m so lost without you
I know you were right believing for so long
I’m all out of love, what am I without you
I can’t be too late I know I was so wrong
I’m all out of love, I’m so lost without you
I know you were right believing for so long
I’m all out of love, what am I without you
I can’t be too late to say that I was so wrong

This is another song I sang along to, but couldn’t have sung the verses without the lyrics. I always belted out that chorus though.

Being near-deaf, I’ve often sang lyrics that I later discovered were way … WAY off base! Not knowing the right words never stopped me from belting them out, though!

😂😂 I used to love listening to my husband sing. He always sang the wrong lyrics, but the joy he had when he did it was wonderful.

I love picturing that!!! I’m the same … I may not sing well or know the lyrics, but music is joy for me! Now that I’m of … say, a ‘certain age’ … I find people no longer glare at me when I catch myself singing in the grocery store aisles or parking lot … they just look on and grin, like “Oh, look at that little old lady … isn’t that cute?” 🤣

To tell the truth I have never paid that much attention to the words. The melody is nice and Air Supply had a great sound so the words never clicked in until I read this. As for the original words — who knows. Maybe they have a different meaning in the UK. I think I might have paid more attention if I had heard the original words, but really don’t know at this point. Probably something like rg said, holding someone against their will.

That is EXACTLY how I am, Angie! If I like the music, I pay little or no attention to the lyrics, especially since I am near-deaf and can’t discern the lyrics anyway!

Jill, although a clear pop song, this one had some substance due to its lyrics. I am glad they changed that one line, as the meaning would be lost on me. Keith

This one definitely isn’t a fave among my readers! Yes, I’m still scratching my head over that line! I’ll do better today … stay tuned!

The song sounds so nice, if you don’t listen to the actual words. The music is sweet, the voice even sounds sincere — until you pay attention. And then it just becomes another lovesick guy (or girl) who realizes they had a good thing but screwed it up, however they did that. Been there, did that, no need to ever do that again.
“What am I without you?” If you’re nothing without someone else, you are a drain on the other person’s energy.. No one likes to have their energy drained!

I agree that no other person can define you … and I would never “need” another person so much that my life was worthless without him/her. But, again, I don’t worry so much about the lyrics … I just like the music. However, this is one I won’t be playing again … ever.

Poor Air Supply. They tried.

Probably meant ‘arrest’ as in ‘hold you’ as in ‘slow the situation down’ and go back to where they were.

Or, take possession of, in a nice sort of way. But is there any nice way for one person to possess another person? I think not!

I agree, possessing of a person is an attempt to take away their free will

Yup. We don’t use “arrest” that way in Canada, generally speaking. But I have seen it in various books, articles, and comments.

Words have their own powerful influence, they are also slippery customers dependant on so many nuances of deliverer, recipient and cultures.

Ahhhh … I thought perhaps this was some common expression over there. Makes sense … maybe

Maybe.
I was just writing to rawgod how powerful and slippery words are.
Philosophers down the ages have visited the subject of words and their meanings, or impacts.

Very true … and quite often tone of voice or facial expression can modify the meaning of the words, too!

Dave Allen a very observational Irish comic had a routine where he would go through the number of cultures where a man would threaten another always using the word ‘mate’ of ‘friend’ or ‘chum’ or such like in the tirade.

And did the friendly word soften the threat?

No it made it sound more sinister:
And I can’t find the fribbin’ clip now!
Anyway, if you want to sample his brand of humour just go onto Youtube and enter ‘Dave Allen’; it’s treat!

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!! NOW I remember why I had jotted it in my notes … not because someone had requested it, but because you had 🤢 it!!! You called it “whiny” as I recall! Carolyn might have requested it … I can’t remember … ay ay ay … I’m losing my last marble! Sorry, Amigo … I’ll make it up to you today!
