I know … I played this one just over two years ago, but when it crossed my radar this evening, I just couldn’t get it out of my head and I’ve been singing it (much to the chagrin of my girls) and even almost kinda-sorta dancing to it, so … time to share the joy with you guys! There really isn’t much trivia about this song, oddly.
I’m taking you back to 1967 tonight … 54 years … wow … where have those years gone? Few people will sit up and take notice when you say the name, Brenton Wood, but he is the singer of this song that I have never forgotten, never stopped singing at least once a week. This song is one of only two hits Brenton Wood had, the other being Oogum Boogum Song, which frankly even I do not recall.
It was released in 1967 on the album Oogum Boogum. It was written by Wood (under his real name, Alfred Smith), Joe Hooven and Jerry Winn. A quick and dirty search reveals almost no information about the origins of this song. Brenton Woods inspiration, it is said, was the late Sam Cooke.
The song charted at #8 in the UK and Australia, #9 in the U.S., and only #17 in Canada.
Gimme Little Sign
Brenton Wood
If you do want me, gimme little sugar
If you don’t want me, don’t lead me on girl
But if you need me, show me that you love me
And when I’m feeling blue and I want you
There’s just one thing that you should do
Just gimme some kind of sign girl
Oh my baby
To show that you’re mine girl
Oh yeah
Just gimme some kind of sign girl
Oh my baby
To show that you’re mine girl
All right
If you do want me, gimme little sweet talk
If you don’t want me, don’t lead me on girl
But if you need me, show me that you love me
And when I’m feeling down, wearing a frown
You be there when I look around
Just gimme some kind of sign girl
Oh my baby
To show that you’re mine girl
Oh yeah
Songwriters: Alfred J. Smith / Jerry Winn / Joseph Davis Hooven

Jill, this is a fun song. Especially as a driving tune. Keith

I had not expected to know that song to tell from the title and the year it was released. But yes, I know it and I like it a lot. Can it be that there exists a different (later) version?

I can’t swear to it, but maybe the Bruce Willis character on “Moonlighting” might have done a bit of it during an episode or two? I remember that “Moonlighting” helped re-mainstream older Motown, and gave “oldies” stations a new breath, for a bit. I recall this one from the radio, though, too, in ’67. It’s a fun one to dance to! 😄💃

Ahhhh … I had forgotten all about that show until you mentioned it! You may be right … I need to look into it!

I would imagine so, but I haven’t checked to see.

I am generally pretty good at oldies, even when they fall outside my musical tastes but this one I have never heard before and I did not recognise the artist either.

I tell a lie…after giving it a listen I do recognise the song.

Benton Wood had only two hits, so Im not surprised you don’t recognize him, and the song was just one of many in its day.

I remember this one, but can’t say it ever really grabbed my attention. Just one of those one hit wonders. For a Brit that clip is probably more notable for the introduction: that was Jimmy Savile, who was a notable DJ here, knighted for his charitable work, but revealed after his death to have been a predatory paedophile with a huge number of victims.

I wondered who that guy in the intro was … thanks for the info … sounds like a real arsehole! I always liked this one, but I wasn’t surprsed that it didn’t set your toes to tapping! 😉

Not really my thing, is it!

Hardly! 🤣

P.S. I just looked him up on Wikipedia and see that he was ‘knighted’! Also that several of the awards he had previously gotten were rescinded, some even posthumously.

He always had a slightly creepy air about him, but it was still a shock when it all came out. It was a real shame for his victims that no one took them seriously when something could have been done about it. I don’t use any clips that include him if I can avoid it.

I was debating between two clips, and now I wish I had chosen the other one, but I didn’t know. Next time I’ll know … if I can remember, that is!

Whatever you do, don’t play a clip of him introducing Rolf Harris!
