I first wrote about Greta Thunberg in December 2018, featuring her in a ‘good people’ post. Since then, I have written about or mentioned her no less than 22 times! Since the first time she crossed my radar, I’ve said that this young woman is going to change the world … and she is doing just that, bit by bit! She doesn’t just talk the talk, but she walks the walk, and a few times lately that has gotten her arrested! Let’s check in with Greta and catch up on the latest …
In January of this year, she was detained but not arrested by police at a protest over the expansion of a coal mine in the western village of Lützerath, Germany.

Climate strike week 230. We are currently in Lützerath, a German village threatened to be demolished for an expansion of a coal mine. People have been resisting for years. Join us here at 12 or a local protest tomorrow to demand that #LützerathBleibt !#ClimateStrike

Police officers carry Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg away from the edge of the Garzweiler II opencast lignite mine during a protest action by climate activists after the clearance of Luetzerath, Germany, Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023. After the eviction of Luetzerath ended on Sunday, coal opponents continued their protests on Tuesday at several locations in North Rhine-Westphalia. (Federico Gambarini/dpa via AP)
Then in March, she was detained twice during a demonstration in support of Indigenous rights in Oslo, Norway.
And just last month she was charged with disobeying law enforcement after she allegedly refused to leave the scene of a climate protest in Malmö, Sweden.
“Today, for the third day in a row, young activists from @tatillbakaframtiden have blocked oil tankers in the Malmö oil harbour. The climate crisis is already a matter of life and death for countless people. We choose to not be bystanders, and instead physically stop the fossil fuel infrastructure. We are reclaiming the future,” said Greta in an Instagram post.
Mind you, I’m not saying that getting arrested is, in and of itself, an achievement, but it is the fact that the threat of arrest isn’t stopping her, that she is thumbing her nose at those who would pay homage to the fossil fuel industry to the detriment of life on Planet Earth. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was reportedly arrested some 29 times during his lifetime, but he got his message across despite those who thought he could be stopped with a pair of handcuffs and a jail cell. I’m betting that Ms. Thunberg will do the same! Our children and grandchildren will owe Ms. Thunberg a debt of gratitude for their very lives, I think.

Anything good that has come with change came with a cost. Protesting is always going to have casualties, but they usually win the war. I love Greta, and she has a world of followers. ❤

Yes, sometimes the cost is too high, but we are grateful to those who are willing to put their very lives on the line to protect the planet, our freedom, our very lives. Greta is, in my book, a true hero!!! ❤

Every time I’ve been arrested it was because I was too slow. You kept posting pictures of the future yet you hold onto your pessimism. Will this woman make a difference? She already has and will continue to draw others with her. A natural born leader does not ask to be followed nor care who does follow. This woman sees a future where she wants to be and is determined to get there obstacles be damned. Come if you want.

My pessimism is, I think, realism. But … do I think that Greta and those like her can make a difference? ABSOLUTELY!!! I just hope it’s not a case of too little, too late. And I wish the people in this world would open their eyes for a change!

If a glass is half full or if it is half empty it is half way there. I guess we are both realists and we are halfway. 🙂

Yes she is brave girl. Being from Sweden I knew about her parents before it all started in 2018. I was following her mom, Malena Ernman, an opera singer, on Facebook, and it had nothing to do with climate back then. Malena was accused of indoctrinating Greta when in fact it was the other way around (if anything). She was hounded so much that she left social media. There is so much false anti-Greta information being spread that it really makes you think about what is going on. She really gets some people riled up. Old guys (and sometimes women) who are spouting nonsense on social media about Greta seem to feel like they are brave “truth-tellers”, telling how it is. I just think it is pathetic.

I didn’t know that about her mother! What a shame that she was hounded in that way. Small-minded, bored people will sit around and think up conspiracy theories just because it gets them attention, never minding who it hurts. In my book, young Greta is a hero and I hope she inspires and motivates many others to follow her movement or to start their own! We are on a path to self-extinction, and it’s people like Greta who will change the course, if any can.

I appreciate a lot what she does. She was even a lot inportant because got mediatic attention with her protests and people started to think mire about climate matters.

She is indeed a young lady with a big conscience, one who wants to make the future brighter, and for that I admire her greatly! You’re quite right … at the very least, she has increased our awareness of environmental issues, shone a spotlight on them and on the fossil fuel industries and their ignoble practices.

All of those climate activists are very well aware of what could happen to them. Being arrested is only one of those probable scenes. Many are scared of that but keep up their plan anyway. I admire them for that!! They are more scared of what is about to happen to the planet and us than of the law.

Yes, and if you noticed the pictures, Greta didn’t seem upset, but was taking it all in stride, and in one pic she even had just a bit of a grin! My fear is that she will ultimately be injured or killed … people are nuts … but I’m sure she’s aware of the dangers and chooses to fight for the life of the planet anyway! I give her two thumbs up for everything she’s doing!

Yes, I did! I already noticed that when I saw that photo in some online news. She knows what she does and is not afraid of the consequences since they cannot be worse than what happened without a change.

She is a one-of-a-kind, for sure, but I cannot help but wish that we had a few thousand more just like her!

Just imagine, there would be no other way to change the system. The only thing we need to be careful of is not to drift into the opposite extrem.

True … that is always a very real danger. The pendulum swings one way, then back the other, but never seems to stop in the center.

Only when new things become a simple habit it becomes something completely normal. Only when we the gender debate stops and we simply accept everyone and every relationship equality happens. Only when saving our planet becomes a target and a reflex, we are ready to fix what we distroyed.

Good points all! Sadly, I am not sure we’ll see any of that happen in our lifetimes, but then … you are much more of an optimist than I am, so I hope you are right!

A spearhead of trying to save the world for future beings, she should be given a louder microphone, not silenced. But Big Oil hates her guts, and her ability to motivate others. I haven’t heard much in the news about her of late, but thanks for letting us know ehe is still out there fighting the wealthy. Three cheers for Greta! HUZZAH! HURRAH! HURRAY! Hurry, Ms Greta, the world is lucky to have you!

Exactly!!! But, the fossil fuel industry has long arms and will likely go to extraordinary measures to try to shut her up. But her voice is getting louder anyway, and I hope she motivates many, many others, as well! We are, indeed, lucky to have her!

Jill, Greta Thunberg is one of our heroes. She walks the talk and we need more folks to pay attention to what she is saying. Having heard her speak and reading what she says and does, she is a very impressive person. Emulating the former US president many of her critics resort to personal criticism not debating issues. I fully agree! I hope many others are inspired and motivated by what she’s doing, for one person cannot do it all alone! Yes, Roger said he saw on Facebook that someone was promoting a theory about who was funding her, etc. I don’t give people like that the time of day, let alone a voice. Thumbs up for Greta!!!

Did you know that according to some yutzs who fill up their tragic time on Facebook and other social media apparently she is being funded.
Funded by whom and for what purpose they are vague about, which leads them open to suggestions they are either being funded by or used by corporations who don’t like Greta’s agenda.

Leave it to bored people to dream up conspiracy theories about anything and everything, eh? Sigh.

I have a loathing of them. Over-thinking matters, feeding off each other’s suspicions and pretending they know more about the world when their ignorance is all they display.
They start off as small groups meeting in obscure places then they gather other frightened or confused types, or folk who want to appear fashionably wise.
Now it’s an industry, filled with disruption, hate and threats to progress. And the beliefs worm their way into the public conciseness.

Your definition is so spot on … “pretending they know more about the world when their ignorance is all they display.” The more they speak, the more obvious their ignorance becomes! Apparently it will take something really big to pull their attention away from their made-up stories …
