Snarky Snippets — Assholes All Around!

I haven’t done one of my infamous ‘snarky snippets’ posts for quite a while now, but the snark is starting to boil over and needs an outlet!  A few things caught my eye today that fit that bill perfectly.

George Santos … remember him?  He’s the U.S. Representative from New York who has never told the truth in his life.  He has been charged with 13 counts of fraud, money laundering and theft of public funds, and his entire resume is nothing but lies.  He even lied about his mother, saying she was killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks but according to the documents from the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services, Santos’ mom, Fatima Devolder, applied in February 2003 for an immigrant visa from the American consulate in Brazil. The form states that she had not been in the United States since June 1999!

Anyway, I largely ignore him, for we already know that anything he says will be a lie, and frankly I have better things to do with my time than listen to lies.  But one caught my attention today when I noticed Santos’ name in the same headline as one of my heroes, Rosa Parks!  Naturally, I had to read the article, fully expecting to read that Santos claims he was on that bus with Rosa in December 1955, fully 33 years before he was even born!

But no, he was only comparing himself to Ms. Parks, saying “Rosa Parks didn’t sit in the back, and neither am I gonna sit in the back.”  Sorry, Georgie boy, there is NO comparison.  Rosa Parks stood up for what she believed in … equality for all, regardless of race or skin colour.  All you believe in is whatever you think will gain you the most wealth.  Rosa Parks is a hero; George Santos is an asshole.

Remember Kirk Cameron?  He was a cute kid playing in a sitcom, Growing Pains, back in the ‘80s.  Well, that cute kid has turned into a grade-A asshole!  He and his book publisher (who knew he even wrote a book?) are demanding that the federal government investigate the American Library Association.  Why?  Well, apparently because he has written a children’s book that is extremely homophobic, and he is planning a book tour, but most libraries, for what I think are obvious reasons, do not want him to stage an event at their library.  He thus says they are discriminating against Christians.

No, Mr. Cameron, but we don’t choose to indoctrinate our children into your world of hatred.  The majority of us, especially those of us outside the Christian evangelical cult, are raising our children in a world of diversity where no person is judged based on skin colour, sexual orientation, religion, gender, or any other such criteria.  We are raising our children to believe in equality for ALL people, not just those who look, act, and think like us!  Now, go back to your typewriter and write some more homophobic white trash that nobody will want to read!  Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr …

A United Airlines flight left Houston, Texas, on its way to Amsterdam in the Netherlands, but it only got as far as Chicago because … um … one passenger wasn’t satisfied with the food.  Yep, you heard me right.  According to the article in The Guardian

“While it is unclear exactly what meal the unruly passenger had gotten upset over, business class passengers on United are typically offered a full three-course meal in addition to more food throughout the flight.”

Apparently, the man became livid and begun issuing threats to airline personnel.  The plane had to dump some fuel in order to land in Chicago, and once it landed, the passenger was escorted off the plane by law enforcement and the plane then resumed its journey.  He had paid nearly $7,000 for his ticket and now faces fines in excess of some $37,000.  A pricey lesson in humility!  What an asshole!

  1. Jill, interesting cast of characters. Santos is one of the few people that can rival Trump in the lying department. Definitely two peas in a pod. Cameron has long been yesterday’s news. Maybe this his last cry for attention. As for the adult version of enfant terrible on the plane who pitched the hissy fit, he also harmed everyone on the plane who had plans. He might end up with a lawsuit or two if people are our financially.

    • If Kevin McCarthy weren’t so desperate to hold onto his very thin majority, I think Santos would have been ousted by now, but the Republicans cannot afford to lose a seat, so … values and integrity come in second. I vaguely recall hearing other things about Cameron, but hadn’t paid much attention until this one gobsmacked me … what a louse! The guy on the plane should get a lifetime ban from all major airlines, for he’s a threat to the safety of all! Remember the guy a while back who threw open the cabin door?

  2. I quite agree about all of them. A very tiny snark in return: the US edition of the Guardian appears to have gone native. “Gotten” – not in proper English! 🤣

    • Growing up in Australia, we never used “gotten”. Yes, it is very American. But now that I have been in America for much of my adult life, I guess I have become infected by that “virus”.

        • Ha..kidding here. I love British shows, but wonder why they say “going to hospital instead of going to THE hospital and a non British saying I hear is he peed his pants, instead of he peed IN his pants. And I learned something today instead of I learnt something to day. Maybe I’m old school or old something.😜..sorry I know it’s off topic..delete Jill, if you want.😊

      • Or “got,” as it is spoken in proper English 🤣

There are probably others but the only use we make of “gotten” that I can think of is in the phrase “ill-gotten gains,” which is a bit different from the general use you guys give it. As I said earlier, divided by a common language 😊

        • The one that always gets to me is the way people say “I” when they should say “me”. I guess they think always saying “I” makes them sound smart when it really doesn’t. Simple rule of thumb: Does it sound right when you leave off the word before using I or me. Example: “Give Jerry and me a good reason”. “Give me a good reason? Or would you actually say “Give I a good reason”? Just heard someone using I when it should have been Me. Hence the tirade. Sorry. I seem to be on a roll tonight.

    • My friends have asked where I grew up and one of my teachers asked where I learned to speak proper English. My mother insisted that we speak properly at all times. I had to wait until I moved out to talk like the rest of the people.

  3. I read about Kirk Cameron recently. I loved Growing Pains as a kid and his character Mike Seaver was always a standout. I think people are allowed to believe what they want to believe but I do find his latest stance to be problematic. His latest rant around Pride Month and saying people need to practice humility instead of pride really rubbed me the wrong way. It’s easy for him to say that when he doesn’t know the humiliation that the 2SLGBTQ community faces as a collective on a daily basis especially in these turbulent days. So yes, bring on the snark!

    • I liked that show, too, and as with many others, it saddens me to see the characters grow up into complete Bozos! Yes, everyone can believe what they want, but it’s when they start trying to push their ideas on others that there’s a problem, especially when those ideas often lead to violence. Cameron is a bigot, and if that’s his feeling, then fine, but for him to promote his bigotry and try to force libraries to close their doors to some, that is unconscionable! I’m so fed up with those who look down upon the LGBTQ community … I saw so much hatred during Pride Month that it literally sickened me. An aside … you know how the homophobics have stigmatized such organizations as Target, Bud Light, etc? The girls and I went out to eat (a very rare occasion, only the 3rd time since pre-pandemic days) and I proudly ordered a Bud Light!!! And I’ll do it again, too! Yep, my friend, I have plenty of snark these days … no doubt there will be more soon!

      • Thanks Jill. I agree with you that freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences and people who espouse hate and bigotry should be held accountable.

And I love your Bud Light story. I don’t drink alcohol but I’ll gladly support Bud Light for their stance on this issue.

      • Gee, I love Bud too, Lite or otherwise, and I shop online at Target. Does that make me a rebel? Even worse, back in the ’90’s I chaired the committee that planned our town’s first World AIDS Day walk on December 1. There were so many people there that it took over an hour for them all to make it around the walk area. Our Mayor gave a speech along with other local dignitaries making it the largest and best walk in town history. And to think, I once thought a lot of Kirk Cambron. UUUGGGHHHHH!!!

          • I was actually commenting about all of the replies to some of your other comments. I think I put my half cent worth on several of them. with some not very nice words to a few. As for ignoring me, I know you aren’t. I’m just not online much lately. BTW, I wrote a poem that I emailed to Roger Moore who has a blog on WP and he posted it there — after asking my permission and receiving it. I think I’m into poetry mostly at the time, working on some about my grandparents and the slower life way back when. It’s safer than keeping up with the news here where bad words are not tolerated. I can almost see Sister if she ever heard some of the words I mutter while having the door to my room blocked so no one can sneak up on me. Not a pretty sight, believe me!

      • Some people are just too high minded. When someone is trying to close a deal I try to limit myself to one question; “how much?”:)

  4. Jill, this is ‘off topic’, but I wanted to let you know that I am having great difficulty accessing your posts. When I click the email notification link, nothing appears. When I go to your name on The Reader, I get a message that you ‘have not posted anything’. I have to find each post separately, and hope that you get this message. I wouldn’t want you to think I was ignoring your blog!
    Best wishes, Pete.
