♫ You Gotta Love Someone ♫ (Redux)

It’s been four years since I last played this one, but … not much has changed!  Ollie is still sitting on my lap, demanding pats and when I’m too slow on the draw, putting his claws into my bare foot to remind me that, “Hey, Gwammie, pat me … pat me now!!!”  Gotta love me some Elton while patting this purry furry …

I’m sitting here, really thinking it is past time I went to bed for a bit of reading, maybe even some sleep, but see … there’s this sleeping kittie in my lap, he’s purring his contentment with every breath he takes, and I cannot bear to disturb him.  It is, of course, Oliver, aka Ollie … the only one of our Feral Five who actually likes me!

So, since I will be sitting here for a bit longer, I might as well play a tune, don’t you think?  This one has been in my head all evening, since I was talking about it with a friend earlier on …

According to SongFacts …

“You can take on the world, go forth and conquer, but first, you gotta love someone. It’s a simple but eloquent lyric written by Bernie Taupin, and one that proved prescient when Elton John got his life in order a short time later. By 1990, Elton had spent years suffering from bulimia and cocaine addiction. When he finally decided to take action, it was prompted by his new love, Hugh Williams, who convinced him to go to therapy together. At those sessions, they were asked to list each other’s faults. Williams cited Elton’s bulimia, alcoholism, drug addiction and fits of rage. Elton flagged Williams for not putting away his CDs properly.

This got through to Elton, and in the summer of 1990 he entered a hospital in Chicago where he was treated, emerging six weeks later sober and determined to make positive lifestyle changes. His relationship with Williams didn’t last, but the sobriety stuck and Elton enjoyed a career revival, returning in 1992 with his hit album The One.”

This one hit #1 in Canada, #33 in the UK, and #43 in the U.S. in 1990.

You Gotta Love Someone
Elton John

You can win the fight, you can grab a piece of the sky
You can break the rules but before you try
You gotta love someone
You gotta love someone

You can stop the world, steal the face from the moon
You can beat the clock, but before high noon
You gotta love someone
You gotta love someone

You’ve got one life with a reason
You need two hearts on one side
When you stand alone and there’s no one there
To share the way it feels inside and baby

You can cheat the devil and slice a piece of the sun
Burn up the highway but before you run
You gotta love someone
You gotta love someone

When you’re gonna play with fire
You let someone share the heat
When you’re on your own and there’s no one there
To cool the flames beneath your feet and baby

You can win the fight, you can grab a piece of the sky
You can break the rules but before you try
You gotta love someone
You gotta love someone

You gotta love someone
You gotta love someone

  1. Songs like this: Neither slow nor fast, not schlepping but also not driving, not happy, not sad, not interesting, not even boring, not stupid, not clever, not even offensively bad, not rocking, not hymnical, no personality, no dignity, just nothing at all. Meh. Empty.

This shit isn’t even mediocre, it just is. It shouldn’t exist.

      • I’m so glad you enjoyed it!!! It seems that most didn’t and I was giving up hope, but your comment brings a smile back to my face! No, we can’t all enjoy the same thing, and I certainly don’t expect everyone to like every song I play, but still … it makes me happy when others enjoy the music! You’re a better person than I am, for I don’t think I could listen to the groups you mentioned! Keep those toes tapping! Cwtch

  3. For me, I think he stopped making records I want to hear after Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. That was such a great album but he then seemed to go for bland, boring stuff like this one. I’m not sure that I’ve ever heard this before, but it is rather forgettable!

    • I’m so glad you liked it! So far, it seems that not many of my readers did! Yes, Ollie is one who demands things be done at his will and at a time of his choosing. When he wants pats, he does NOT want you to be typing on the computer or listening to music, but only paying attention to him! His nickname is “bug” because when we first rescued him, he was so tiny he could curl up in the palm of my hand like a pill bug! xx

  4. #1 in Canada you say? You played it before, you say? Far as I know I have never heard this song before. And I’m not sure I ever need to hear it again.
I can do all those things, not because I loved someone (though I loved many someones), but because I love everyone (which includes non-human people too). I love life — and it is life that inspires me.
If one has to wait until they love someone, they are probably passing up on a lot of opportunities to just love being alive.
I don’t mean to put a damper on your love for this song, Jill, or anyone else’s love for it. It is just too confining for me! I need the freedom to do anything, any time, anywhere, for whatever reason I want.
But, if you want to sing about not being able to move becsyse you have a purring kitty on your lap, I’m all for that. Cats are more important than me! And I feel sorry for you four of your five don’t love you as much as Ollie does. I do hope that has changed over the years…

  5. They let me in to comment! Hooray!
Just a shame I had to watch the rather creepy Elton in the video. I would sooner just hear the song on the radio, and not see him.
    Sorry. 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.
