The Old Liberal, Joseph Urban, makes some excellent points about how this nation has gone from a plutocracy (government by the wealthy) to a democracy and is now back on the path to becoming a plutocracy once again … or perhaps already has. Abraham Lincoln said in his Gettysburg Address …
” …government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
And it hasn’t ‘perished’ … but government in the U.S. today is of, by, and for certain wealthy people, not all of the people as Lincoln envisioned. Take a look at what The Old Liberal has to say …

It seems to, yet there are still fragments of democracy that may not survive another four years of Trump or a Trump-alike.

There also is no shadow without the sun … only eternal darkness.

And the Word. The first recorded words, “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:2-3).

No you didn’t. That is why you don’t understand how people do bad things.

Yeah, I really did. I asked questions and either didn’t get any answer, or got some b.s. answer and I find it impossible to believe in some higher power, whether called “God” or “Allah” or “Jehovah” that is in charge of things here on planet Earth. Humans created religion and I agree with Marx that it has become the “opiate of the masses”, or at least some of the masses. I don’t understand why people hate based on such superficial differences as skin colour, gender identity, religion, ethnicity, etc., but I do understand some of why people do bad things. Sometimes it is self-preservation, sometimes it is greed, most times it involves a lack of conscience, and I could expound, but it is past time I try to get some sleep.

Why do people accept as truth words from liars. All humans are liars(so are dogs and cats, bad habits are contagious). If I want the truth I ask the trees.
It seems odd to me that there is an expectation to find Leonardo da Vinci in the Mona Lisa. Creation is in the artist, only a piece of the creator is in the art.
Babies need someone to be in charge, adults should have been taught to make their own decisions. I make the rules the rules do not make me.

Jill, historian Jon Meacham noted in his book “The Soul of America,” that we have long had this tension between our better angels and worse demons. In a several instances we have managed to get it right, but these right moves had to make up for longer periods of wrongdoing – slavery, Native American genocide, Jim Crow, women not voting, Communist witch hunts, etc. Let’s hope we can beat down this threat to democracy embodied in Trump and his followers. Sometimes I think that half of humanity was short-changed when it came to having ‘better angels’. That said, yes I think we can beat down these latest threats to democracy … BUT … we better hurry, for we are running out of time and the planet is running out of resources.

The U.S. had always been, ruled by those who are rich and or, powerful, the votes have, absolutely, ZERO effect, on, altering the system, and, voting is just a mirage of the people, foolishly believing, that we can, change the law, that would, allow us to have the, most basic human rights (life, liberty, etc., etc., etc.), which were, originally, ours, but, we’d, relinquished, these rights, to the selected few, to, decide on, what’s best for, the general, population as a, whole, and now, we can’t, get them, back…

I still believe it is possible to turn things around … the question is, do we have enough time to do so? With the wealthy calling the shots, climate change will continue to deplete the planet’s resources and we are running out of time to repair the damage.
