Filosofa seems to be filled with snark tonight. I wonder if it might be the heat, humidity and poor air quality that have filled my poor head with so much snark? Anyway, it seems unfair for me to have all the fun, so allow me to share some of my snark with you!
There actually were a few positive tidbits in the news yesterday, as it happens. First, Donald Trump lost his appeal to delay his New York fraud trial. It would seem that delaying tactics are the only thing Donnie has in his bag o’ tricks, and those are getting worn thin from overuse.
Second, the Biden administration announced that it will prohibit drilling in 13 million acres of pristine wilderness in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska and cancel all drilling leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This is a huge win for the environment, for all of us!
Third, in Mexico the Supreme Court decriminalized abortion nationwide. Apparently, contrary to what we’ve been told, Mexico is a far more progressive nation than the U.S.!!!
But alas, there was also much to set off my snark-o-meter …
The highly UNqualified senator from Ohio, the state I currently reside in, J.D. Vance, has proposed new legislation in the United States Senate titled the “Freedom To Breathe Act.” The bill would make it illegal for the federal government, schools, airlines, and other public transit companies to require masks for the protection of the general public. Covid cases and deaths are on the rise once again with the latest variant, but ol’ J.D. wants us to put ourselves at risk. The man is a bloomin’ idiot! But he is not alone …
Then there’s former Arkansas governor and two-time presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee (also the father of current Arkansas governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders). When they wrote the book “How To Be An Asshole”, they asked Mike for advice! His latest lunacy is his statement yesterday that … “If these tactics end up working to keep Trump from winning or even running in 2024, it is going to be the last American election that will be decided by ballots rather than bullets.” Fortunately, I don’t think too many people bother to listen to what a washed-up former governor has to say, but then all it takes is a few to get the ball rolling, as we saw on January 6th 2021.
And speaking of which … I was beyond pleased to see Proud Boys’ leader Enrique Tarrio sentenced to 22 years in prison for his role in the January 6th attempted coup, but what I most want to see is those who plotted from behind the scenes, those who are awaiting trial down in Georgia … GO FANI WILLIS!!! Lock ‘em up!!! Every last one of them, up to and including the former guy.
Then there’s ‘Senator’ Tommy Tuberville who is currently sitting on more than 300 military promotions, leaving the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps with only ‘acting heads’. One might think that a month-long paid vacation would have mellowed Tubs a bit, but nope … he’s as determined as ever to refuse to allow the Senate to do its job and confirm those promotions. It’s somewhat reminiscent of 2016 when Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died in February, and then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to even consider confirming a replacement for nearly a full year in hopes that a Republican would win the election in November of that year and be able to have his pick. Hmmmm … Tuberville … McConnell … dirty dealings? 🤔
And one last bit of snark, speaking of the Supreme Court. That aforementioned sleight of hand was the beginning of the end of the legitimacy of the Court. Today, trust in the Court is at a new low of 47%, as compared to 76% in 2009. Part of the reason, of course, has to do with some of the extremely partisan decisions such as the Dobbs decision that have been handed down, and part no doubt is a result of the hanky-panky by Justices Alito and Thomas that has put the Court in the shadow of corruption.
Whew … I feel much better now that I shared all that snark!

JD deserves our pity and forbearance. No matter how hard he will try he will never(even with 3X more guaranteed time)be able to grow into a bigger asshole than Ohio’s own(never left) Gym Jordan. Jill the depths I can go, imagine living politically downstream from Gym?
I’m sorry Keith but his air quality chops are pure cynic. Vance was among the top 20 of all recipients of oil and gas donations in the 2022 campaign. He first mentioned East Palestine two weeks after the incident probably same time he learned that it affected a population 98+% white. His currently trying to water down the new regulations on individual braking of hazardous material transporting train cars, the cause of the derailment. There is no perfume capable of covering the stench. To end on a positive note some Ohioan will eventually benefit as he has 5 years to buy or build a home here in Ohio to California’s loss.

Well, you DO have a point that J.D. can’t hold a candle to Gym Jordan for being an arsehole, but that doesn’t mean I have an ounce of pity for J.D., either. What’s with Ohio and their love of people like Gym, J.D., Warren Davidson, et al??? I wasn’t aware just how much J.D. had benefited from the fossil fuel donations … that ‘splains a lot!

I just read that about Huckabee a bit ago in Heather’s newsletter … and included it as an Addendum on my latest post. He may be an a-hole and a washed up governor, but unfortunately, there ARE those who would agree with him.

True enough … some would agree and some would even take it as a “go ahead”. Sigh.

I can make it worse, Jill. Yestreday our illustrious leader in Alberta, Danielle Smith, announced a $22,000,000 allocation of funds to the War Room for Gas and Oil. The only purpose for this war room is to bsttle claims of climate change and to advertise the continued use of oil and gas throughout the world! $22 million dollars to advertise pro fossil fuels and con climate change. This is at a time when she has cut funding to education and healthcare in our province. $22 million could go a long way to hiring more teachers and teachers aides and reduce the number of students in crowded classroms — or to try to fill the hole she created in the number of anaesthesiologists in our province, thus reducing the number of surgeries that can be done here when we are still facing long lines of needed surgeries csused by Covid. Either option is better than trying to promote the use of more oil snd gas at a time when the world, including Alberts, is reeling from the effects of climate change. Our ruling United Conservative Party of Alberta is so out of touch with reality we csn expect even higher temperstures, more wildfires, more droughts, more flooding, and more erosion of valuable topsoil across the whole breadbasket of Canada in the coming years. And she still has over 3 years of government to further wreck our planet. Where is her common sense?
Where is the common sense of our blind redneck voters?

Jill, you covered many bases. I did see where the former president was looking forward to testifying. Oh, please do so and televise. Attorneys know he is an historically bad witness as he cannot remember where the truth ends and lies begin.
As for JD, if he makes the bill about chemical toxins vaulted into the air by companies and breathed in or ingested by children and adults (see my post today on the increased numbers of pre-50 cancers), then it would be good. That is something worth fighting for.
The military has been none too kind to Mr. Tuberville saying he is hurting national security as he saves heterosexuals from LGBTQ+ exposure. I am glad he and JD are focusing on the big things as senators. Keith

Indeed, Trump is his own worst enemy!!! I imagine at least some of his lawyers are wishing they had never taken his case. Ol’ J.D. isn’t likely to care about such things as you mention … he is following the party line of doing anything that is the opposite of what the Democrats suggest, no matter the impact it has on his own constituents, the rest of the country, or the rest of the world, for that matter. Daily average Covid deaths has more than doubled since July, but J.D. Vance is making sure we have our rights … the right to become seriously ill and also to infect others. What a guy, eh? The military has given Tuberville just what he deserves. I’m incredulous that he is being allowed to continue this madness. Sigh. Oh yes, they are certainly focusing on the big things … grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr …

It’s always nice to start the day with some positive news. It’s nice to see measures to protect the environment. We’re dealing with the opposite over here with a premiere in a controversy over protected lands.

Hahaha no I’m in Ontario. One of your followers asked me the same thing. It’s sad when we need to clarify which part of Canada we’re at. It’s always the conservative provinces!

It was probably rawgod who asked you, for he is in Alberta and has a similar story there!
