A few nights ago, Keith suggested this one. I didn’t recall it … when I thought of “Heat of the Night” I thought of the long-running television show starring Carroll O’Conner, Alan Autry and Howard Rollins. But once I listened to the song it did seem vaguely familiar, but not one that I’ve heard many times. Still, I’m always seeking to expand my repertoire, broaden my horizons, so I decided to play this one tonight.
There isn’t a lot of background info available about this song. It was written by Bryan Adams and his regular collaborator Jim Vallance, released in March 1987. The song became the most successful song from Adams’s album Into the Fire in 1987. The song was partly inspired by the film noir classic The Third Man, starring the actor-director Orson Welles. The darkness of the lyrics was further influenced by a trip Bryan and Jim Vallance took to Berlin in March 1986, before the wall came down.
The song charted at #6 in the U.S., #7 in Canada, and #50 in the UK.
Heat of the Night
Bryan Adams
I was caught in the crossfire of a silent scream
Where one man’s nightmare is another man’s dream
Pull the covers up high – and pray for the mornin’ light
Cause you’re livin’ alone – in the heat of the night
Met a man with a message from the other side
Couldn’t take the pressure – had to leave it behind
He said it’s up to you
You can run or you can fight (yeah that’s right)
Better leave it alone – in the heat of the night
In the heat of the night they’ll be comin’ around
They’ll be lookin’ for answers they’ll be chasin’ you down
In the heat of the night
(Where you gonna hide when it all comes down)
(Don’t look back don’t ever turn around)
Had to pay the piper to call the tune
Said he’d be back someday – said he’d be back real soon
Pull the shades down low – you’ll know when the time is right
When you’re lyin’ alone in the heat of the night
In the heat of the night they’ll be comin’ around
They’ll be lookin’ for answers they’ll be chasin’ you down
In the heat of the night
(Where you gonna hide when it all comes down)
(Don’t look back don’t ever turn around)
In the heat of the night they’ll be comin’ around
They’ll be lookin’ for answers they’ll be chasin’ you down
In the heat of the night
(Where you gonna hide when it all comes down)
(Don’t look back don’t ever turn around)
In the heat of the night they’ll be comin’ around
They’ll be lookin’ for answers chasin’ you down
In the heat of the night
(Where you gonna hide when it all comes down)
(Don’t look back don’t ever turn around)
In the heat of the night yeah
They’ll be chasin’ you down
In the heat of the night
(Where you gonna hide when it all comes down)
(Don’t look back don’t ever turn around)

If you ever want to do a guitar week I’m all in. The GOAT of left-handed guitar players who inspired Eric Clapton to up his game would suggest you start with this guy.

This wasn’t my favourite of his but it’s still much more to my liking than the past couple of days. If you’d like a more recent one of his which is a lot of fun, try this:
The white-haired lady in the car with him at the beginning and end is his Mum – I guess it saved paying for actors 😊

Oh that WAS FUN!!!! I probably wouldn’t have liked the song if I’d just heard it, but that video makes the day! Thank you, Clive!

It is a lot of fun, isn’t it. He has made some great videos over the years, and always seems to be enjoying himself.

Yes, he seemed to be having a great time, which added to the fun!

Keith said it twice, I concur.
Many thanks, Jill. I love the guitar playing in this song, plus the very cool chorus. Keith

I don’t know how this is possible, but it is my first time hearing this song. At least, I can’t remember although I am a kid from the 80s. Your blog is pretty educative… thanks for filling this blank spot 😅

It’s not one that I’ve heard much … maybe only a few times way back in the day. Glad you’re enjoying learning about the music … as am I! Every new music post I did teaches me something I didn’t know … I love it!!!

Yes, that’s right, I experience it the same way. Music is a language of its own and each piece leaves a message.

I had never heard of this song before, not the sort of thing I usually listen to though. As for Bryan, I have never forgiven him for ‘I Do It For You’, the soundtrack song from the Robin Hood film. It was number one here forever, and still gets played all the time on the radio. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Hey, Pete, i am not particularly a fan of Bryan Adams , even though he is Canadian. But there’s a contempirary of his, lived across the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and across False Creek, by the name of Jeff Healey. One of the nicest guys I ever met. He did this little love song that I wish I had written for a few women in my life:

Jill, I have this feeling I already played this song for you at some point. I apologize if I am repeating myself, but this is one of my favourite ballads of all time.

If you have played it for me before, I’ve forgotten … you know my memory is like a sieve! But thanks for sharing it here!

Good to know that Jeff was a nice guy, I had never heard the song. Do you know the Australian/New Zealand band, Crowded House? One of their songs ranks among my top ten love songs.

Thanks. I’ve heard about them, but don’t know much by them. Music is good, but I need to find a lyrics version. My hearing aids are on the blink.

Lol. How did you know I was going to look for it this morning? Thanks for doing the trench work. But after all that, it’s not my music, or rather I should say, the lyrics don’t talk to me. I tried a couple other songs too, but I found no connection. But it is always good to try something new…

Possibly the greatest blind guitarist. Proof of my commerciality this is my favorite for the shredding and the eye candy for all.

It’s an American thing, lol. We believe in getting what you deserve, good and hard. 🙂 Healy was not a bad actor as well as a fine guitarist.

Hmmmmm … so are you saying you’d like me to play “I Do It For You”? (No, don’t worry, I’m sometimes slow but not that obtuse!) Sorry you didn’t like this one … perhaps tomorrow will be better! And feel free to request or suggest at any time!

Agreed on the guitar playing! I liked the song okay … not destined to become a favourite, but … not bad! Thanks for your suggestion and keep ’em coming! I’m running out of old favourites!
