Today at noon, the House of Representatives plans a vote to see if Jim Jordan has the requisite 217 votes to slide him into the Speaker’s office. On Sunday, it was said he was at least 55 votes shy of the magic number, but as of last night, after he bullied, threatened, coerced and browbeat his Republican peers, it was reported that he was either 8 or 10 votes short, depending on who you listen to. So, apparently the Republicans are a cowardly lot and caved to pressure … what a surprise … not.
I can think of one or two who might actually be worse than Jordan for the speakership, but they aren’t even close to being in the running, so at this point Jim Jordan is the most serious imminent threat to this nation and its people. A few things to consider …
- Jordan — both before, during and after the 2020 election — pushed conspiracy theories about Donald Trump being cheated out of the election. “Something doesn’t feel right here,” Jordan told Fox News’ Sean Hannity. “Our president got 9 million more votes this time than he did four years ago, and yet he comes up short.” (For much more on Jordan’s election extremism, read this.)
- Jordan was one of 147 House Republicans who voted to overturn the 2020 election.
- Jordan, as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has led the probe into Hunter Biden —and what he alleges is systemic corruption within the Justice Department.
- Jordan has long been an advocate of shutting down the government in order to extract concessions from the Senate and the White House.
- Jordan was one of a handful of Republican members who forced their way into a House impeachment hearing on Trump in 2019.
- Jordan refused a congressional subpoena to cooperate with the select committee investigating the January 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol.
On a more personal, humanitarian level, Jim (nicknamed Gym for a reason) Jordan was once a wrestling coach at Ohio State University where he participated in the coverup of gross sexual abuse of his students by a campus doctor. This, in and of itself, should disqualify him from holding ANY position of trust!
Jordan has also stated that he will not bring any bills to fund additional aid for Ukraine to the House floor … a catastrophe that would demolish our allies trust and faith in us for decades into the future.
We have bigger problems ahead, but for today, Jim Jordan is probably the biggest threat to this nation and whatever democratic principles remain. If you have a Republican representing you in Congress, call their office today and tell them that under no circumstances do you want them to vote for Jim Jordan to become Speaker. You can stress that you will make sure they lose their next election if they do so. Find your Congressperson’s contact info HERE.
We elect these people to represent US … We the People!!! Jim Jordan represents nobody but Donald Trump and his wealthy donors … we are but pawns on his game board.

I wrote to my US Rep on Sunday evening, though it will do no good because he voted against certifying the election, as well. I’m sure he’ll cover himself by saying he had to vote in favor of Gym Jordan because at least he wanted the seat, and someone has to do it so the House can take care of our business, as I frequently nag them to do.
Actually, he probably won’t bother to answer me, but will put it in his newsletter, except the part about doing our work. 😉

Sigh. Yes, my own representative, Warren Davidson, is the same … a member of the House Freedom Caucus, an ardent supporter of unlimited gun ‘rights’, and voted to overturn the 2020 election. But still, I nag … I email him at least once a week and let him know that I’m watching, that I haven’t forgotten, and that I will be a loud voice around election time next year. Does it do any good? I don’t know, but it’s the only weapon in my arsenal. I do usually get a response from Davidson, though probably written by an aide or maybe by AI!

So many dangers, so many threats to democracy. Sadly a scary percentage of voters would happily vote to get rid of democracy in both our countries.

It almost seems as if the people here in the U.S. have given up on democratic principles, as if they would prefer an autocracy. I don’t get it … I guess too much time has passed since 1945 that they don’t remember, and there are few left who can tell the story in person. Sigh. I haven’t forgotten about that coffee … need it now more than ever!

I often have the feeling that proper threat assessment is beyond the average human. I found True Odds: How Risk Affects Your Everyday Life a book by James Walsh to be helpful.
Gym Jordan is of no danger of being anything good or bad without Democratic help. Gym is just a monster under the bed and just as fearsome. It is the staple in every magician’s bag because it works. Simple distraction. Hamas used it to get close enough to murder 2000+ people and Israel is using it to disguise the ongoing genocide of Palestinians. In giving attention to “monsters” what are we missing.

I will take a look at that book … it’s one I’ve never heard of. But I think perhaps you’re under-estimating the current batch of zealots in the Republican Party. It isn’t just Jordan, but too many others to name, and their goal is not to help this nation and its people to prosper. Enough of them strategically placed in positions of power poses a very real threat, and that isn’t just my assessment.

The threat is real as stupidity reigns supreme. My concerns are with the capable nefarious actors that use the confusion to enact their own desires. I have a holistic approach to threat. I just got a message from Mahaffy that “malicious site” tried to compromise my computer. I imagine it takes a crack crew to take “malicious site” seriously.

Not only stupidity, but also greed and arrogance. Sigh. While you and I can sort the spam messages, there are far too many who cannot and who fall victim to those who would prefer to feed off of us rather than do an honest day’s work. Sigh.

Aren’t They the reason we have our work to do? 😁

Except that if he becomes Speaker, he is 2 chairs away from being President. He neither will get nor needs Dem help to get that.
I agree as to whatever else we could be missing, but as to the US, not much, because nothing happens without the US House, who can’t act without a Speaker. This is a serious concern. Maybe not a hair on fire thing, but very serious.

Very serious and valid cause for concern except that he won’t become speaker. My worry is that it seems possible something worse (once beyond imagination) could happen. Dems are funny. They could easily conclude that something, anything must be done.

Well, we cannot simply go along without a speaker indefinitely … the clock is ticking, counting down to 30 days from now … tick tick tick …

They could easily, but will they. If they do, it will be within the law and accepted standards, because that’s how and who we are. So, there’s that. They’re not votin’ for Jordan, or any other insurrectionist! And any Republican Speaker will blow goats, but they’re the majority.

I almost think that with the government funding running out in just one month, the wars in Ukraine and Israel, the dysfunction of Congress is a “hair on fire” thing at the moment.

That sixth sense that creates the unease that things are going on but we don’t know what. I think I was ignoring it. The clown show we are watching seems to be working if no one seems aware that Harlan Crow has interests in not one but four upcoming cases with the supreme court with an un-recused Justice Thomas. We’ve missed it and the court’s foundational principles have been undermined. The distraction continues.

Oh, we keep up with that, too.
It is a lot of reading, though. Probably too much for people with lives outside of civic politics. Many of us compartmentalize each issue, and still enjoy time with the doggies, as we must. Well, except those who must enjoy time with the kitties, the rats, the whomevers.
I get your point. Here’s to someone else stepping up for the Speaker position.

One cannot ignore the kitties, for they will demand attention on their terms and in their own good time!

Good point, Richard. Distractions … there are plenty of them around at the moment, aren’t there?

Jill, this a quote attributed to Republican Rep. Liz Cheney uttered the day of the insurrection on the Capitol:
“According to Rucker and Leonnig, Liz Cheney, then a Wyoming Republican congresswoman, and future vice-chair of the January 6 committee, spoke to Gen Mark Milley, then chair of the joint chiefs of staff.
‘That fucking guy Jim Jordan,’ Cheney said. ‘That son of a bitch. While these maniacs are going through the place, I’m standing in the aisle and he said, ‘We need to get the ladies away from the aisle. Let me help you.’
‘I smacked his hand away and told him: ‘Get away from me. You fucking did this.’’”

One of the many things I like about Liz Cheney is that she doesn’t mince words, pulls no punches! And for the record, I believe she is 100% spot on in this! Why, if Jordan had no role in the attempted coup on January 6th, did he then ask for a pardon?

By, allowing such, a, bad politician to lead the House, the people’s, voices are, bound to, get, silenced. And, what’s worst, is, that, he would be, the next in line, if the president, and the, vice president, became, unable to, fulfill their, role the, president…

You are so right … the worst possible outcome would be for Jordan to become president!!! That is a nightmare I don’t even want to think about, but we MUST think about it!

Rats are supposed to run from a stinkng ship (Misquote intentional!) However, in the GOP, it seems the worse Trump’s farts smell, the more the rats run to be beside him. Evolution changed in direction! But we cannot stop the GOP from stinking, stem to sterm. Imwgine Gym’s jockstrap! It stinks to hell!

I don’t understand it … if Trump had shown up on the political scene in the 1960s would he have been embraced by as many as embrace him today? Is this a sign of the times, or have we always been this ignorant? Sigh.

In the 60s he would gave been laughed out of America, although Nixon would have probably loved him. I don’t know exactly when tnis devolution junk started, but I think I would look at all the televangelists like Billy Graham and his cohorts. Using television to reach far beyond their tiny empires gave them a power they had never known before, the piwer to preach (and steal from) millions of people at a time. The more money people sent them the worse humans they became. They used religion to make themselves millionaires, and that turned them into power-hungry assholes. The stupider they sounded the more money that rolled in.

I’m sure you’re right that both religion and the media have played a role in this devolution, but that begs the question, where does it stop … how do we stop it? Or must it play out like it did 90 years ago in Germany?

The good people of the world have to stand up to the populust hooligans. They just don’t seem to care what happens to anyone but themselves. They don’t understand they will be us in 20 to 50 years. And by then it will be too late!

You hit on the key right there: “They don’t understand …” They listen to the loudest voices, which are the likes of Fox ‘News’ and others, so they do not understand the consequences of their actions … or lack of actions, as the case may be.
