♫ Lost Without Your Love ♫

Written and composed by David Gates, this song was originally recorded by the pop-rock group Bread, of which Gates was the leader and primary music producer.  It is the title track of Bread’s 1976 album, and became their final Top 10 hit once David Gates left to begin his solo career.  There is very little background information that I can find on this song, but it charted at #8 in Canada, #9 in the U.S., and #27 in the UK.  When I last played this one back in 2019, one of my readers compared it to a “massage for the mind” …

Lost Without Your Love
Bread

Lost and all alone
I always thought that I could make it on my own
But since you left I hardly make it through the day
My tears get in the way, and I need you back to stay

I wonder through the night
And search the world for the words to make it right
All I want is the way it used to be
With you here close to me
And I’ve got to make you see

That I’m lost with out your love
Life without you isn’t worth the trouble of

I’m as helpless as a ship without a wind
A touch without a feel
I can’t believe its real
And someday soon I’ll wake and find my heart won’t have to break

Yes, I’m lost with out your love
Life without you isn’t worth the trouble of
All I want is just the way it used to be
I need you here with me
Oh darling can’t you see
If we had love before we can have it back once more

  1. I like Bread. “If” and “Baby I’m a Want You” are my favorites, but if David Gates is singing, everything’s all right. I thought I first learned about them in jr. high orchestra, but then when we started playing some of Bread’s hits, I thought, “So that’s who that was!” And it was more fun to play than Mozart (who I don’t dislike but I prefer Beethoven. And Bread.) I used to belt this song out in the car when it was on the radio. That’s all-thanks, Jill!

  2. Yeah, all my Bread knowledge comes from sisters and girlfriends. I never had their albums but my older sister and several girlfriends did.

And now The Neurons have this song going in my mental music stream. Argh.

    Hugs ‘n cheers

  3. Jill, this is vintage Bread. They had several soft rock hits to match David Gates’ soft voice. One thing to their advantage is their songs usually had clever lyrics.

I do know the girls in my high school loved Bread, so if you dated one, you better be willing to listen to their music. That is how I was introduced to Bread.

I did know the song “If” well enough to use it as a lullaby for my kids when they were pre-toddler.

    • Ha ha … so it was to please the girls that you came to appreciate Bread, eh? I bet your wife still likes them!

Oh yes, I love “If” too! Hmmm … you think Clive and Pete would like that one any better? Nah, probably not!

    • Hmmm … perhaps you should use this as your bedtime music! For a second there, I thought you wanted me to play “Baby I’m-a Want You” next, but then I realized that wasn’t quite the point you were making! 🤣 Hmmm … where do I go from here, then? I’ll have to think long and hard about tomorrow’s song, for I’ve been a disappointment to you and Clive lately and I must find a way to make it up to you!
