Tomorrow is ELECTION DAY here in the U.S. No, this isn’t a presidential election year, not even a mid-term election year, though there are a couple of congressional seats on the ballot. But in many states it’s an important election nonetheless. Voters tend to be a bit lax about these off-year elections, thinking they don’t really matter, but this one really does matter. Two major issues are on the ballots in several states this year: democracy, and women’s rights.
Our friend Annie over at annieasksyou has been having WordPress troubles lately. I well remember how from about mid-July through mid-August I went through similar troubles and some days fewer than half my normal readers even saw my posts, so I can certainly empathise with Annie! Her most recent post recaps some of the things on the ballots in a variety of states tomorrow – and also has a bonus of a really fun animal video! I’m sharing her message this afternoon, for I feel it is imperative that we all understand the importance of this year’s election and that we all do our part to protect and preserve the democratic foundations that are teetering on the precipice today.
Thank you, Annie, for all that you do and for allowing me to share your work!
Here is a brief snippet from Annie’s post … then please go check out the entire post titled We Ignore Animals’ Cognition at Our Peril…plus a civics reminder/plea:
Speaking of cognition, if you haven’t voted yet, don’t forget that Tuesday, November 7, is election day. In our house, we’ve been writing postcards and sending modest donations hither and thither.
I’m appealing to all of you to support the candidates whose words and actions demonstrate they want to preserve and extend democracy. I don’t hide my political preference, but from what I hear and read, millions of Independents, Never Trumpers and former Republicans–as well as many Republicans trying to reclaim their party from the far right–recognize that it’s essential in our two-party system to support the Democrats at this critical time in our national life.
Once again, please click the above link to see the cute animal video and to read the rest of the important information about tomorrow’s election!

Ace wants everyone to know that Goldens are shameless scene stealers. 😹

I’ll remember that, Ace! Oh … and Ace? Have Richard show you the music post later today … the band is named after you! (Sorry, no Kinks yet, Richard, but I’ll get to them … promise!)

Thanks Keith. I wasn’t aware they would chop up the babies. I thought they would make us eat them whole which everyone know is how you end up pregnant in the first place.😁 Why must WE vote? Because THEY are.

Absolutely! And we won tonight … I hope Frank LaRose and Mike DeWine are crying in their beer right about now.

It should really matter but will it matter to enough people. Voter apathy has got the UK into some massive messes.

‘Tis the same here, my friend. Especially in these off-year elections when it’s mostly local seats and issues on the ballot. But in these strange times, everything is magnified and those things that would have once been ‘ho-hum-why-bother’ issues are now of great importance. When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade and chipped away at women’s rights last year, it energized voters … a good thing! Today, we’ll find out if that energy remains, or if it has waned. Sigh. Hugs ☕☕

I don’t suppose trying to run a campaign with the title. ‘If you don’t vote, whatever sh*t happens will be your fault’ would gain much traction, would it?
Probably be inundated with some sort of outrage from both Right and Left

Perhaps not, but truer words were never spoken.

Jill, thanks for reiterating Annie’s plea. A couple things to find out.
do not vote for anyone who echoes the ongoing lies of the former president about the election being stolen from him. It was not. He lost. And, he has acted seditiously in multiple ways all because his ego cannot tolerating losing.
do not vote for anyone who says climate change is a hoax and stands in the way of combatting it. Many state and local governments have done substantial things to help fight climate change. For example, there is a consortium of about a thousand cities that share climate change impacting ideas.
do not vote for anyone who promotes the restriction of civil rights or rights to a good education. Groups are protected under the law because the rights of everyone matter. To reveal a glaring example saying someone can discriminate by not selling to a group is a horrible slippery slope – I can still remember Blacks being served at the back door of a restaurant or not allowed at the counter.
Please vote. Not all candidates are the same. Party selection matters. Keith

Thanks, Keith! You are spot-on with all you say. Here in Ohio, the ballot consists of choices for school boards and also two amendments, the one for women’s rights (abortion rights) and legalization of marijuana. A few of the candidates for school board are radical Republicans, but there were also several sensible, moderate candidates to choose from. I’m mostly crossing my fingers for Issue 1 to pass, after our Governor DeWine and Secretary of State LaRose changed the wording on the issue to make it sounds as if we wanted to chop up babies!

NOW IS THE TIME TO FIND OUT WHETHER, DESPITE WHAT THE REPUBLICANS WANT FOR THE FUTURE, THERE ARE STILL SOME AMERICANS WITH A REASONABLE EDUCATION WHO KNOW WHEN THEY’RE BEING LIED TO, AND WHO KNOW THAT UNDER A THEOCRACY OR A TRUMP ,( PRESIDENT FOR LIFE) DICTATORSHIP, THE POOR WILL LOSE OUT AND THE RICH BECOME MORE POWERFUL. AMERICA WILL BECOME A THIRD WORLD NATION WHERE ONLY THE PRIVILEGED CAN BE EDUCATED AND CAN AFFORD TO EAT 7 DAYS A WEEK. THE DEMOCRACY MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO DIE.

I’m sure there are still some Americans with a reasonable education who know they are being lied to, but the question is … will they stand up and say, “NO MORE! ENOUGH!!!”? It seems that people in this country have become too complacent, assuming that everything will work out fine because it always has. I fear we’re about to find out what apathy and complacency can cost us all. Sigh.
