Yeah, yeah … I know I just played this one a couple of years ago, but I’ve been telling you that I needed me some Stevie Wonder, and … well, I just couldn’t go one more night without my Stevie singing to me! So, grin and bear it, or better yet, close your eyes, let your toes and your fingers tap a bit, and let Stevie wash away all your troubles for a few minutes!
Written by Ron Miller and Orlando Murden for Motown Records’ Stein & Van Stock publishing company, the song was first recorded in 1965 by Barbara McNair, but was first released the following year by Jean DuShon. Other early versions of the ballad were issued by The Four Tops, The Temptations, Diana Ross and Tony Bennett, whose recording was the first to reach the pop charts. And then came Stevie …
All versions of the song to this point were long, drawn-out ballads. Stevie Wonder was the first to pick up the tempo and use a joyful arrangement. Wonder’s version, however, sat in the Motown vaults for nearly a year before being released in 1968. Why? Because Berry Gordy did not like Stevie’s version. Gordy vetoed the single’s release, and the recording was shelved. Billie Jean Brown, the head of the Motown Quality Control department, finally coerced Gordy into allowing Wonder’s version to be released in October 1968.
Stevie’s version became the hit record and definitive version of the song, the one most people think of first. It charted at #2 in the U.S., #3 in the UK, and #5 in Canada.
For Once in My Life
Stevie Wonder
For once in my life
I have someone who needs me
Someone I have needed so long
For once unafraid
I can go where life leads me
And somehow I know I’ll be strong
For once I can touch
What my heart used to dream of
Long before I knew
Someone warm like you
Would make my dreams come true
For once in my life
I won’t let sorrow hurt me
Not like it’s hurt me before
For once I have something
I know won’t desert me
I’m not alone anymore
For once I can say
“This is mine, you can’t take it”
Long as I know I have love
I can make it
For once in my life
I have someone who needs me
For once I can say
“This is mine, you can’t take it”
As long as I know I have love
I can make it
For once in my life
I have someone
Someone who needs me

I love Stevie’s version! Sometimes it comes on in the grocery store while I’m there. Everybody is smiling, polite, and friendly! Stevie just has a way. Thanks! (Sorry about all the exclamation points!)

Wow … your grocery store plays music? Yes, Stevie has a way of bringing people together, of making us smile for a while! Hmmmm … maybe he should go into politics?

Good point! I do like him and wouldn’t wish a political career in today’s environment on even an enemy! So, I take it back!

He should be Supreme Commander of the Universe.
Speaking of universe, there’s a magnificent shot of Andromeda on NASA today, in case you haven’t gotten there yet.

OH! No, I haven’t gotten there yet … I shall check it out in a few … thanks, Ali!!!

Back in your comfort zone – good for you! The video was unavailable but I think I know the song by now anyway 😉

Yeah, I needed to do this for me. Feeling a bit battered and bruised last night and wanted Stevie to sing to me! I’m sorry the video was unavailable! That’s the first time anyone’s said so, and I’ve shared it a few times before. Maybe they just didn’t tell me? Anyway, thanks for tuning in even though you couldn’t hear Stevie singing to me!

This picture brings a smile and so does the song! There are a lot of songs worth repeating! So no problem, my friend! 🙂

If anyone deserves their own week of music, (No, make that a month of their music!) it is Little Stevie Wonder, as he was originally called. (Well, maybe the Beatles too. And for me, Eric Burdon!) This man can sing, and he can play, and he can write lyrics and music. A definite genius. Berry Gordy should be shot for trying to shelve this celebration of love!

I could easily do a Stevie Wonder week!!! I’ve already done a Beatles week, but I doubt dong an Eric Burdon week, for while he and the Animals have some songs I like, I don’t know that I could come up with 7. I agree about Berry Gordy … I didn’t realize until recently what an arse the man was!

That was meant for Jill, but when Gail is better maybe I could do an Eric Burdon month. But then it could turn into a year, possibly. One never knows…

And I love you for that! From the first time I heard House of the Rising Sun I fell in love with his voice, and I am still in love with it. He has hit a few sour notes over the years, but not many. I have seen him in concert multiple times, from big arenas to tiny bars. He sounds good in all of them.

Good song. I well remember the Tony Bennett version, but for once in my life, I like Stevie Wonder’s version just as much.
