♫ Ferry Cross The Mersey ♫ (Redux)

The last time I played this one was in January 2021, after learning of the death of Gerry Marsden, so it’s time for a redux!  His other two songs that are on my revolving-door list have both already been played this year, so that just leaves this one …

Gerry and the Pacemakers were an English beat group prominent in the 1960s. In common with the Beatles, they came from Liverpool, were managed by Brian Epstein, and were recorded by George Martin.  Gerry Marsden formed the group in 1959 with his brother Fred, Les Chadwick, and Arthur McMahon. They rivalled the Beatles early in their career, playing in the same areas of Hamburg and Liverpool.

This song was written by Gerry Marsden and released in late 1964 in the UK and in 1965 in the United States, becoming a hit in both countries, #8 in the UK and #6 in the U.S.

“Mersey” refers to the River Mersey in northwest England, a river that flows into the Irish Sea at Liverpool. The Mersey Ferry runs between Liverpool and Birkenhead and Seacombe on the Wirral.

Ferry Cross The Mersey
Gerry and the Pacemakers

Life goes on day after day
Hearts torn in every way

So ferry ‘cross the Mersey
‘Cause this land’s the place I love
And here I’ll stay

People they rush everywhere
Each with their own secret care
So ferry ‘cross the Mersey
And always take me there
The place I love

People around every corner
They seem to smile and say
We don’t care what your name is boy
We’ll never turn you away

So I’ll continue to say
Here I always will stay

So ferry ‘cross the Mersey’
Cause this land’s the place I love
And here I’ll stay
And here I’ll stay
Here I’ll stay

      • No, no shopping; I have thoughts but no action. I like to send my sister an Advent calendar early in the season; this year, she sent me one, and it’s the one I was going to send her! But I found one with chocolate, and sent that last night. So, there’s that. 🙂

I dislike spending big chunks like that, too; for some reason, spending that amount but in dibs and dabs here and there, now and then, makes it seem like less! Gotta be silly about it.

        • We always do an Advent Calendar too! The three of us take turns and last year someone sent us one with chocolates … yum!!!

Ha ha … yes, I hear you!!! It’s the same with anything … small amounts add up, but it seems somehow less painful! Still, I needed to get busy and make some progress, so I do have almost all of my granddaughter’s list complete. Now to tackle my daughter’s! And the kitties. And our friends … Ay ay ay … let this holiday season be over soon!!!!

    • Thanks, Keith! Yes, they are both great songs! I was debating between the two, in fact, but found I had played “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” back in July of this year, so I went with this one instead.

  2. Gerry is an iconic figure in Liverpool. I am originally from London of course, so he is not quite as iconic for me.
However, I did like his song ‘Don’t let the sun catch you crying’, and bought a copy when I was 12 years old. 🙂

    Best wishes, Pete.
