While we wait for our elected members of Congress, having had a nice long 10-day or more vacation, to do the job we sent them to Washington to do, it looks as if we may have a very long wait. While they are back in Washington, it’s only for about another two weeks, probably only 12 working days at most before they leave for their Christmas break (in my entire career, I never got as much vacation time as these overpaid buffoons get!) And when they return from that, there will be only about two weeks until the next looming government shutdown. So surely they are diligently working on those appropriations bills to fund the government for the rest of the fiscal year, right? Right??? Well, um … sorry to disappoint you folks but right now they seem more concerned with other things.
Earlier this month, the House Oversight Committee, led by Representative James Comer, subpoenaed Hunter Biden, President Biden’s son, to testify before their committee on December 13th. Hunter responded that he would gladly testify before the committee in a public hearing. The reason for demanding a hearing open to the public is, as stated by Mr. Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell …
“We have seen you use closed-door sessions to manipulate, even distort the facts and misinform the public. We therefore propose opening the door. If, as you claim, your efforts are important and involve issues that Americans should know about, then let the light shine on these proceedings.”
But James Comer rejected the request for a public hearing, insisting on Hunter Biden’s closed deposition. Comer accused Hunter Biden of attempting to circumvent established rules, stating that such behavior would not be tolerated by House Republicans. That, in and of itself, seems fishy to me. But I loved Representative Jamie Raskin’s response to Comer …
“Let me get this straight. After wailing and moaning for ten months about Hunter Biden and alluding to some vast unproven family conspiracy, after sending Hunter Biden a subpoena to appear and testify, Chairman Comer and the Oversight Republicans now reject his offer to appear before the full Committee and the eyes of the world and to answer any questions that they pose? What an epic humiliation for our colleagues and what a frank confession that they are simply not interested in the facts and have no confidence in their own case or the ability of their own Members to pursue it. After the miserable failure of their impeachment hearing in September, Chairman Comer has now apparently decided to avoid all Committee hearings where the public can actually see for itself the logical, rhetorical and factual contortions they have tied themselves up in. The evidence has shown time and again President Biden has committed no wrongdoing, much less an impeachable offense. Chairman Comer’s insistence that Hunter Biden’s interview should happen behind closed doors proves it once again. What the Republicans fear most is sunlight and the truth.”
I have no doubt that if Hunter Biden had agreed to testify behind closed doors and out of the public view, the committee would have found multiple ways to twist and turn his words, to take them entirely out of context, and give their rabid base some fake meat to gnaw on. I hope Mr. Biden and his attorney stick to their guns and don’t give an inch. After all, how many Republicans refused to honour a subpoena from the January 6th committee and others? And Hunter Biden isn’t refusing to honour the subpoena, but merely asking for transparency … something that seems to scare the hell out of Republicans.

Hi. I love the people who come here and comment. So many grand comments and so spot on. I really did not have anything different to offer, but I love how in this space so many people see the reality of the situation the same way, without the need to create fictions or conspiracies to justify what they think. Hugs. Scottie

I think that is what I love most about my blogging experience, Scottie … the camaraderie with readers/commenters, the different viewpoints. I truly have found a whole second family, my blogging family, and we hold each other up when necessary, share each other’s angst as well as the good times. And of course you are a big part of that blogging family! Hugs

When they deign to spend we the people’s money on hearings, deposing for evidence for hearings, etc., we the people ought to be able to know what they’re doing. That was the original premise of CSPAN, IIRC. Honestly, I believe there ought to be transcripts available on congress.gov, too; we pay these people, and we pay for congress.org.
I know I don’t sound like a good liberal when I toss in that we the people pay for this, that, and the other thing. My basic point with that is, the legislators are our employees, not our bosses, and it’s not their money, it’s ours. I like paying taxes for good things, which include congress.gov.

EXACTLY!!! It IS the people’s business, whether the Republicans think so or not. And I LOVE your idea about transcripts! I’m with you … nothing wrong with saying that We the People pay for everything, for we DO! More than a few times I’ve made that exact point … that THEY work for US, not the other way around! As an employer, there are a few hundred of them I’d like to fire right about now!

Smoke and mirrors! Strike one match to ight a fire, and use the smoke to cover the fact they have nothing worthwhile to burn, but set the mirrors to make one match look like a bonfire.

Excellent analogy. And sadly so very true.

Jill, Jamie Raskin’s comment is dead on accurate. Hearings should be open, regardless of the level of veracity of the questioners. The same holds true for the former president. I think his trials should be open to the public. It will be easier to see the truth that way.
Trump was once corrected thirty times in one deposition for his misstatements. If he did not correct them, he would have perjured himself. His children learned the wrong lesson from their father as each offered testimony under oath which was contradicted by evidence.

Raskin just keeps growing in my esteem, and you’re so right … every word he said here is spot on. There has been entirely too much secrecy of late and We the People have every right to know what is said by whom and in what context. I have mixed thoughts on televising Trump’s upcoming trials … on the one hand, yes, I think we deserve and need to hear everything, but on the other hand, I fear his ability to turn the trials into a media circus.
It’s a shame, but frankly every word out of the mouth of anyone named ‘Trump’ should be fact-checked, and then re-checked, for truth is not in their vocabulary.

Heel biting little nippers. I can understand following a fool but what could make you see these cowards as leaders is beyond me. How do you ever get used to the stink?

No, they aren’t acting as leaders, but that is the job they were hired to do. Well, actually they ARE leading … leading this nation off a steep cliff! You don’t get used to the stink … ever.
