The picture above is of two children, Yorlei Rubi, 10, and Jonathan Agustín Briones de la Sancha, 8 who, along with their mother, Victerma de la Sancha Cerros, drowned in the Rio Grande River last Friday night. On Sunday, I shared Heather Cox Richardson’s newsletter telling this tragic story. In short, around 9 p.m. Friday, Mexican officials advised Border Patrol of six migrants in distress on the US side of the river in the area near the Shelby Park boat ramp. Border Patrol agents were attempting to get to them, but they were physically blocked from doing so by none other than the Texas National Guard and the Texas State Police, under orders of ‘Governor’ Greg Abbott.
Consequently, these two children and their mother are dead, and in my view, Governor Abbott and every single person who stopped them from being rescued have blood on their hands that I hope gives them nightmares every night for the rest of their lives.
This is not the first time, nor will it be the last that people, including children, have been killed simply for the ‘crime’ of trying to come to the United States in hopes of a better life for themselves and their families. But frankly, there is no ‘better life’ here in the racist nation that has so little regard for human life that we treat immigrants in this manner. Sorry, folks, but only straight, white Christians are allowed to come here.
I have never been more ashamed of this country than I am today.

Hi. As others have said hate, bigotry, and racism seems to be surging right now. I agree the flames are fanned by right wing media. But what is the fuel, the funding, coming from that supports the fanning of the flames of racism and bigotry against those who are different? I see two major sources, the ultra wealthy and the lower income willing to give all they have for the cause. Right wing media like the Daily Wire and Prager U are entirely funded by right wing hateful billionaires. Last I looked, the Mercer family was behind a lot of it. The second half is from lower incomes that are driven by hate or even sadder religion to bring back a time of morality acceptable to their god / church doctrine. Both groups depend on each other, for the wealthy can only fund and the foot soldiers on the ground doing the in your face harm to enforce the dogma of the right need that push provided by the right wing media driving them into ever higher rage. I just don’t know how to disrupt this cycle, to defund the right media, to get rule by church doctrine out of government, and how to stop the right wing gang thug vigilantes that depend on both those groups I mentioned at the start. I wish I could see a way to defang the gang thugs, but not with the support of the other groups. Hugs. Scottie

For us that were brought up in the era of the Beatles, hippies, ban the bomb, love and peace etc it is an entirely new and fucked world.

You are so very right about that. I don’t even recognize this world anymore, feel as if I were dropped here in my sleep one night.

Governor’ Greg Abbott would be locked up by now in Australia, and I find it really difficult that these National Guardsmen stood and watched this drowning, did none of them have any morals and realise the orders he had were detrimental to human life, are they all MAGA brain washed?

Like you, I cannot even comprehend how those Guardsmen stood, hands in pockets, and WATCHED those people die without lifting a finger to try to rescue them. Greg Abbott SHOULD be locked up, but … sigh … welcome to the United States of bigots and wealthy people. Yes, my friend, they are all brain-washed and have sold whatever consciences they once had to the highest bidder. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr …

As someone who worked in the emergency services in London for over 33 years, I cannot imagine the mind of a man who would stand with his hands in his pockets and watch children drown. I never learned to swim, but even so I have gone into water in the past to help people in difficulties.
Best wishes, Pete.

I never worked in emergency services, but like you, I just cannot imagine how anybody could just stand there watching! Apparently it is a requisite for the National Guard to not have consciences, humanity, or a heart!

I am so sorry. Sending you a gentle hug. As long as there are voices like yours, there is hope! But we all know now how Hitler & the Nazis could happen. 🤗

I don’t say this lightly — being ashamed doesn’t help anyone. Abbott has no conscience, and the Texas National Guard members who took part will say they were only following orders. Someone has to speak up and press charges against the whole lot of them.
The Canadian Government is bei g sued as we spesk by a group of young people for not doing enough to combat the Climate Crisis. The government tried to say the you g people had no legsl standing, but a mudge said they do. Their lives are at stake.
This is what needs to happen to Abbott, deSantis, and a whole bunch of other politicians in the States. Use your legsl system against them.
Yorlei Rubi and Jonathan Agustín Briones de la Sanchather, and Victerma de la Sancha Cerros!

I agree that Abbott and the rest need to be held accountable, which is why I think it’s so important we not let stories like this be relegated to the back pages of the news. Keep them front and center, tug at everyone’s conscience — those who have one. Until the majority speak up, nothing will change.

I’ve been dead. I’ve watched it pass close by several times. Panic will not help, calmness and focus is the best way through.

Collective punishment is against the Geneva conventions. I reject your collective blame. 😠

So … nobody should be held accountable for the deaths of innocent children?
LikeLiked by 1 person
If everyone is to blame no one is to blame. Blame the person who ordered them dead and those that let them. I’m not opposed to capital punishment but when you kill an innocent person a guilty one gets away.

I actually am opposed to capital punishment and have been ever since I took a class taught by The Innocence Project and learned how many convicted felons have actually been exonerated … some were on death row and would have been wrongfully executed. So no, I don’t really want those men killed, but they should NOT be in the positions they’re in, either … there should be a psychological exam to test a candidate for a conscience before hiring them into an office that wields power. As for the National Guardsmen … they are sub-human in my book. I don’t give a damn what my “orders” were, I would have jumped into that river and tried my best to save those people. It’s called a conscience.

That’s what makes most other countries wonder the most? 2 or 3 or more official agencies, all paid from tax money – working against each other, fighting over authority and who has jurisdiction. I sometimes wonder how your country does even still exist. 😐

And yet we do exist as the most successful country in the world. We must keep it that way by refusing to let a Hitler wanna be and his MAGA cult destroy democracy and take us back to the era of Jim Crow.

I think I would argue about that “most successful country in the world” standing, but I fully agree that we must not allow a megalomaniac back into the White House, for it would almost certainly destroy the nation’s democratic foundations and economy and status in the eyes of the world.

Financially successful… I would say yes on that.

True … I guess it depends on how we’re defining ‘success’. I was thinking of the bigger picture, but yes, I suppose we are financially successful … until you consider the poverty rate … and then I’m not so sure. Unfortunately our wealth disparity is huge, with most Fortune 500 companies making large profits while the average worker is actually earning less after adjusted for inflation. The country is financially successful, but it is all in the hands of the top 10% or fewer.

I was speaking in general compared to other countries. There is a huge gap individually with far too many below the poverty level.

You might want to step back from your hatred of all things American for just a minute and look around, for what is happening here is also happening elsewhere in the world. Check some of the comments from my UK readers on this post …

A very real danger in a true Rube Goldberg device is its ability to lose you in endless fascination. When drinking and driving imbibe at establishments where 3 or more jurisdictions ajoin. Don’t drink in basement bars.

It’s the same here. Another five refugees drowned two days ago trying to cross the Channel, and all our government can do is attempt to enact laws criminalising them and sending them to Rwanda. I’m equally ashamed of my country.

It’s disheartening to see that you guys are having similar situations, for I always thought the UK was far better in this area than the U.S. Seems that bigotry is a global problem these days … gee, let’s just all kill each other and get it over with. Sigh.

We’ve been having them for ages, they probably don’t get reported much over there. The Brexit referendum brought to the surface a whole load of racism and prejudice, and the current government is based on that.

I did realize back in 2016 that much of what triggered Brexit was immigration … ie, racism and prejudice. But somehow I guess I had forgotten, and I never really thought you guys were as bad as us. But, as you said, it isn’t much reported over here. It amazes me that Rishi Sunak is against immigration … 🤷♀️

We seem to be ploughing a similar furrow. All fed by the right wing media with vested interests. Sunak seems to have forgotten his heritage, though he was actually born here. I expect he will re-apply for his green card after they get wiped out in the general election this year.

I so HATE this effed up state I reside (Texas) and its brutal, calloused, inhumane government with such untold amounts of fury, rage, and increasing disappointment! 🤬 And that’s putting it mildly Jill. 😒

I hear you, Prof! This time it’s Texas, maybe next time it’s Florida or Tennessee … or Ohio. It’s not just Texas, but the entire nation. I don’t know whether I’m sad or enraged … both, I think.

Hate filled politics is now mainstream and being allowed to dictate the agenda and peoples life’s. That’s just as much in the UK as it is in the US. If we don’t stand up to it now it will be too late and many many more innocent souls will be lost.

You’re not the only one of my UK friends to tell me that … and until now I really thought the UK was far better than the U.S. when it came to such things as racism and other forms of bigotry. Sigh. It seems to be almost a pandemic these days.
