I keep trying to remind people that Donald Trump is a private citizen, no different than you or me. He is NOT president, does NOT have any role in government … his voice should be no louder than mine or yours. And yet … the Texas Supreme Court has bowed down and paid fealty to Donald Trump, placing his desires ahead of the best interest of the people of Texas.
The case against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is the same one that got him impeached but not convicted by the Texas State Senate, last year. It is brought by four former top deputies in 2020, alleging Paxton improperly fired them after they reported him to the FBI for allegedly abusing his office to help a wealthy friend and donor, Nate Paul. Depositions were to have begun tomorrow, until … private citizen Trump weighed in, saying …
“Enough time and money has been wasted forcing [Paxton] to defend himself, instead of defending our broken Southern Border, which is under continual siege.”
The justices on the court caved and depositions have been postponed until the end of February, but unless I miss my guess, the court will never hear the case against Ken Paxton if Trump has his way.
And as Robert Hubbell reminds us in his latest newsletter …
Remember that time—during Trump’s presidency—when every proposed action by the US government was evaluated by a single criterion: Does the action advance Trump’s personal interests? Although Trump is not president, House Republicans are giving us a reminder of what it was like when Trump was president. The text of the proposed immigration bill has yet to be released, but House Speaker Mike Johnson reportedly told his GOP colleagues on Tuesday that the bill is “dead on arrival” in the House. Why? Because Trump told him so—in order to advance Trump’s election prospects.
The situation is even more maddening than it appears at first blush. The House will likely vote on vague impeachment articles against Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas. One of the grounds for impeachment is that Mayorkas has lost “operational control of the border”—a fact that is unassailably true because Texas is blocking federal access to portions of the border!
There are other stories that deserve attention, but immigration is the lead issue. We should know by Friday if Trump will kill an immigration compromise that has been months in the making and whether the House will impeach a Cabinet secretary for the first time in 150 years.
Good grief, people!!! Presidents Obama, Bush, and Clinton combined have never once attempted to sway the government or stifle the courts since leaving office … peacefully leaving office, I might add! Somebody needs to find a way to stifle this buffoon and sever the ties that bind every member of the Republican Party to him! He is, perhaps, the biggest threat to our national security at this point in time.

I just wake up every morning hoping that the news reports that he’s dead of a heart attack or a massive stroke. We will still have to deal with all the damage he’s done but at least he’ll be GONE.

I fully agree. He’s not going to sit down and shut up as long as he’s breathing!

I think that camp at Guantanamo is a fine storage space for him.

It’s madness that even now, even after all the actions and stench, he could still become President.

It truly IS madness, my friend. I don’t know how much more of this I can … or want to … deal with. It seems that the people of this nation have lost their collective conscience and intellect all at once.

He is a huge threat to democracies all over the world — and he is the worst example we have right now of how to turn lies into power.

You’re so right … too many people fail to understand that.

The thing that continues to GREATLY bother me is the influence this man wields. Good grief! He may have once been POTUS, but he is now a PRIVATE CITIZEN! Yet the number of people (in and out of political office) bowing down to his wishes is mind-boggling!
Actually, I think beetleypete nails it. 👍 But what a bunch of wishy-washy spineless individuals we have in our government!

Yes, my friend, it IS mind-boggling. And I agree … Pete hits the nail on the head, sad a statement as that is of our current Congress.

Mike Johnson is nothing more than the ventriloquists DUMMY, and should be ashamed to show the people ythat he has no voice of his own. Trump always was a music hall act anyway. Cwtch.

Agreed! And that is how he got the job as Speaker to begin with, by pandering, by licking Trump’s boots. No, Trump was never a music hall act … music hall acts are somewhat respectable … he was always a circus act … a one-man clown show! Cwtch

and every republican governor is on the side of texas using the excuse that South Carolina tried to suceed from the Union. Supreme Court said SC was wrong then, so I guess Texas figures with Trump’s packed courts he can do whatever he wants. I see the dissolution of the US in our future if someone doesn’t stop these yahoos

All but one … Governor Phil Scott of Vermont is not siding with Texas … the only Republican governor to stand by his oath of office. I’m trying to stay optimistic about the future, but some days it’s hard, for often it DOES seem as if the dissolution of the U.S. is nigh. Sigh.

Yeah, but it’s still only one. The others? They have no conscience and very little morality or integrity.

They are pandering to him because they think he is going to win the next election and they don’t want to be on his very long ‘Revenge List’. Just my opinion as a foreigner.
Best wishes, Pete.

I fully agree … but wouldn’t it be nice if they took their oaths to We the People a bit more seriously? Sigh.
