I don’t know about you folks, but today is the first of February, one month into this election year with 278 days until the election that has everyone on pins and needles … and I’m already sick of it all. The news isn’t about the war in Ukraine or the war between Israel & Hamas, or about the very obvious effects of climate change we’ve been warned about for years, or about the humanitarian crisis on our southern border … the news is about the fight between Democrats and Republicans, and all of the aforementioned issues somehow devolve into being right vs left issues. If ever I wanted a year to be over and done with, this is it. If ever I considered living a cloistered life in a nunnery somewhere in the Himalayas, this is it. I alternate between wanting to scream 😱, throw up 🤮, cry 😢, or sleep 😴 until it’s all over!
The result is a combination of uber-snarkiness and mind bounce, so I shall have just a few snippets for you this morning, then I am going to bed to sleep a hopefully dreamless sleep for four hours or so!
If I hear one more person claim that the United States is the “greatest country on earth” I am going to punch them. I’ll even gladly pay for them to get their teeth put back into their mouth … it would be worth it. No, friends, the U.S. is far from being the greatest country on earth. One factual example (I like facts to back up my ideas, don’t you?) …
The United States has approximately 339 million people which accounts for some 4.23% of the world’s population. Yet, as of January 31st, we account for 17.12% of the deaths from Covid. That’s right … the U.S. has had 1,194,100 deaths from Covid since the beginning of 2020, compared to the total global deaths of 6,975,205 … 17.12%! Why? Um … one word … ignorance. Well, maybe a few words: ignorance, Republicans, stubbornness, Republicans. Refusal to wear a mask, conspiracy theories surrounding the Covid vaccines, and people too damn ignorant and lazy to do the research, to figure out the reality, to protect themselves and their families. Bah Humbug.
By comparison, India, the world’s most populous nation, has had less than half the number of deaths from Covid than the U.S. India’s population is 1,428,627,663 – 17.76% of the total world’s population – and they have had only 533,447 deaths, or 7.65% of the worldwide deaths.
Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift … she’s in the news almost as much as he-who-shall-not-be-named (hint, he wears bronzing makeup on his aged face and the hide of an animal on his head, and has an ego the size of the African continent)! Taylor Swift is a singer who happens to be dating a football player. She is, from what I understand, a young woman of conscience, a philanthropist of sorts, and has encouraged people to register and vote. Nothing to see here, folks, move along. But the conspiracy theory crowd … OH MY! Failed once-presidential-candidate for a day, Vivek Ramaswamy thinks there is some connection between her, who will win the Super Bowl, and who will win the presidential race. Others seem to think she is somehow connected to the Pentagon. And Sean Hannity of Fox so-called-News has “warned” her against supporting President Biden in the upcoming election. Somebody please slap that smirk off of Hannity’s arrogant countenance? Leave poor Taylor Swift alone, for Pete’s sake!
Admittedly, I am not well-versed in how these things work and do not understand the fine details, but one term dropped my jaw and made me sit up straight, for I was choking on my coffee. Elon Musk’s pay package from Tesla in 2018 has been struck down by the courts … his pay package of … wait for it … $56 billion! That’s billion with a ‘b’! BILLION! 56 BILLION!! Who the f*ck needs that kind of money??? Does he even realize that there are people tonight … right now, as I write this … who are begging for $2 to buy a bit of food to keep them alive? Does he realize, or even care that some children went to bed hungry tonight because there was no food in the house for them to eat? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr …
Last, but not least, I urge you to hop over to Nan’s blog and see what one of the Republican representatives in her state has said … guaranteed to blow your mind!

I wouldn’t hold my breath for that, if I were you. Seems the venom is increasing, not decreasing.

278 days until the election! And the primary season began over a year ago. This eletoral process in America is way too long. And you see the results!
Yes, why isn’t Trump held responsible for the all those deaths from covid? Of course it’s hard to get any exact number but I would think nearly half of those 1.1 million deaths could had been prevented if the administration had not sabotaged efforts to wear masks, socially distance, get vaccinated, etc.

Agreed!!! I’ve long said that 3 months is more than enough! The 2024 campaigning actually began as soon as Biden took his oath of office on January 20, 2021 I think!
Oh yes, at least half were preventable. I read this evening that some 16,000+ died from taking Hydroxychloroquine that Trump recommended! And the anti-vax, anti-mask, anti-distancing movement took a huge toll as well. Sigh.

He is not held responsible for anything except for rape and defamation, which is awesome in itself..but we await the NY fraud case which this morning has been delayed to mid February, stolen classified documents, inciting a coup, election tampering and on and on. The fact that this has stretched out so long shows we do not have an equal and fair justice system. No excuse for him still being free.

Agree. The judicial system and current tax system virtually allow him to get away with crimes.

This is being intentionally dragged out, because justices and judges are scared … of Donald Trump, of his rabid base …

We should not forget that money is nothing more than the equivalent of work. Who got it and will get it in future? xx Michael

That’s true, but … then how did people like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and others end up with so much of it, when they don’t even work as hard as the average Joe who has a tiny fraction as much money? xx

OMG, I heard of the conspiracy theory of the Republicans regarding Taylor Swift in the news today… I could only shake my head. And I am not surprised they don’t get any smart things done when they only focus on something like that regarding the election… oh, well.
I had no idea the US has such a high number of Covid deaths compared to the rest of the world. That is truly shocking!

I agree … so much that needs to be done, but they’d rather focus on stupid, mindless conspiracy theories about a young singer. 🙄 I’m glad I was born with a brain.
Most people don’t know, else don’t care … I used to report on them from time to time, but everybody just sort of went, “Yeah, yeah, ho-hum” so I stopped. But our percentage of the deaths is creeping up even now … and it galls me to realize that the majority of those deaths could have easily been prevented. Sigh.

Unfortunately, meanwhile, there are some more wars in the world that are much more profiterable than the costly virus…

You asked … “Does he realize, or even care” in reference to Elon Musk. Somehow I think you and all the rest of us know the answer. Even more to the point … do folks like him even know such people exist! It’s pretty difficult to see the rest of the world from ivory towers.

Hmmm … maybe we need to make sure he sees the homeless and the ‘little people’ he stomps on every day. Dunno how, but it seems like a good idea!

Re: Taylor Swift—The far-right conspiracy theorists/Republicans (I’m no longer sure if there’s a difference) are terrified of Taylor Swift bc she may be the greatest influencer who’s not in their side. As I note in my most recent post, she endorsed Biden in 2020. I include a very moving brief video in which she explains to her worried dad that she needs to be “on the right side of history.” And as she’s fearless and determined, I think she’s likely to do so again.
So we can expect Trump and his ilk to continue vilifying her. They’ve now stopped talking about the economy, which is defying all expectations. All they have are Taylor Swift—and desperate migrants seeking safety and sustenance in the USA.

The Republicans of the 21st century (most are far-right conspiracists) would rather focus on the small mouse in the corner than the raging bull breaking down the door, for they have no good solutions. So, Taylor Swift who actually convinced thousands of people to register to vote, and who has a large public presence, makes a perfect target for them … so much easier than actually trying to solve real-time issues such as the problems at the border, the appropriations bills to fund the government, etc., etc., etc. And most important of all, they’re keeping little Donnie happy …

Agreed—and I hope that Taylor Swift will soon be The Mouse That Roared, endorsing Biden.
A very determined young man runs the “Biden’s Wins” Twitter account. He’s terrific and relentless. The other day, he reported that his girlfriend is a Swiftie. He had texted her about the brouhaha and printed her response, below.

She’s all the things that Republicans hate: rich & famous, a philanthropist, a Biden supporter, an activist … oh, and beautiful.

The Taylor Swift obsession by the far right is hilarious. If she does endorse Biden, its over. Her army is incredible.

It IS hilarious … but given the propensity of the far right to resolve differences with violence, to use force against those they don’t like, I can see where it could also become dangerous. She endorsed Biden in 2020, so my best guess is that IF she chooses to publicly endorse a candidate, it would be Biden. If I were her, I’d probably tell people it’s none of their damned business … but then I’m not famous, so I can get by with that! 🤣
