Seeking … Something

I’m in a rather introspective, quiet mood tonight.  I don’t want to write about he-who-shall-remain-nameless, yet that seems to be the main focus of every news story I’ve read for the past 48 hours.  I don’t know what I can say about our current lack of adults in Congress … seems I’ve said it all already.  I’m biting my tongue on the topic of the war between Israel and Hamas, and I’ve already made my position on Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine perfectly clear.  So, what to write about?  Unlike sometimes when my mind bounces from pillar to post, tonight it simply seems to be struggling for air beneath a layer of foam from which it isn’t even trying to escape.  So, I offer just a few snippets and then I shall shut up and go to bed …

The story of the vigilante group who attacked a man they thought was a migrant but who was really a resident of NY   made me start thinking …

This is how it starts – the violence based on mistrust, based on lies told by politicians, and so by the time election day rolls around it has become the biggest immediate problem we face.  So, if Trump wins the election, he immediately calls out the National Guard to “quell the unrest” and puts the nation under martial law – we gave him just the excuse he was hoping for.  And the rest, as they say, is history.

Representative Doug Lamborn, a Republican from Colorado, announced last month that he is not running for reelection in November, leaving all three Republican-held seats in the Colorado delegation open this year. “I’m not getting any younger,” Lamborn said on KVOR-AM this morning . “I want to look for opportunities to do good.”  WHAT???  A Republican … wants to “do good” … can we clone him???

How many times have I heard in the past few years that the U.S. is a “Christian nation”?  It isn’t, and I argue vociferously that this is a secular nation as established by the U.S. Constitution, but those who want it to be otherwise hear only what they want to hear.  Well, I now have proof that this is anything but a Christian nation …

A recent study by Pew Research  finds that for the first time in the U.S., the group referred to as the “Nones” account for the largest plurality, about 28%, up from about 16% in 2007.  The “Nones” are comprised of essentially three non-religious ideologies:  atheists, agnostics, and the “nothing in particulars”.  This should (but won’t) put an end to that notion that the U.S. is a “Christian” nation and that Christianity is the only viable option.

And I leave you with one final thought … a question, really.  Republicans have now adopted ‘maga’ as their identity … ‘maga’ stands for “make America great again”.  I would argue that the U.S. was never “great”, that few nations achieve greatness and those that do, don’t hold onto it for long.  But my question to you is this:  what do you think “great” means in this context?  I’ll be back with more on that topic later.  Meanwhile, have a lovely Friday!

  1. I have nothing to say about the MAGGATS, but when CONald came out publicly rooting on Russia and talking about his tough BS on NATO the other day, “he’ll boot them out” LOLOL. You know what, at least he said loud and clear because I watch international news and it seems that most of the NATO country leaders have spoken out about him and are all opening weapons plants to start producing so they can: A) have their own ammo and not have to rely on the US if CON comes back, and B: also to help Israel and Ukraine because they know if criminal CON comes in, they’re on their own. Pretty pathetic and a very bad look on America. Sorry. 😦 ❤

  2. As you know, Jill, I fight hard to hold on to my optimism. When you spelled out MAGA, “Make America Great Again,” which got you thinking about what constitutes a great nation, I was reminded of the rebranding of MAGA to “Make Attorneys Get Attorneys.” Yes; we’ve seen a ton of examples of terrible lawyering recently, but I began thinking of all the positive moves that have occurred in the courts–despite the dreadful Trumpian influence and the Supreme Court’s failure this week to discuss the “I” word: Insurrection.”

Marc Elias has been very upbeat lately about his team’s successes in voting rights cases. The DC Court of Appeals’ unanimous decision has been termed “fool-proof” and “brilliant” and may well make it possible for Judge Chutkan to begin moving Jack Smith’s Jan. 6 case forward. And I think the day is fast approaching that Smith will call out Aileen Cannon–she’s really gone too far beyond simply delaying the case to actually endangering witnesses’ lives. The conservative appellate court that smacked her down in the early stages of the documents case could find it impossible to overlook her most recent transgressions.

Lots of “mays,” I know. The burden is still on us, the voters, to get the country we want and deserve. But beacons of hope, nevertheless.

    • You are so much better than I at maintaining a positive outlook, my friend! I am encouraged by all that you say, but I’m also a realist and seeing is believing … when the Trump trial finally resumes, then I will breathe a sigh of relief. I fully agree about Judge Cannon … she should be removed from the case, for her prejudices in favour of Trump are obvious for anyone with eyes and a brain to see. Thanks for sharing your optimism, though … it DOES help, for I trust and respect your judgment.

        • And now, instead of asking SCOTUS to review the substance of whether he has immunity or not, he’s asking them to put a hold on the issue because he’s too busy campaigning to be bothered with it! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr … I wish I had more faith in the Supreme Court of today to “do the right thing.”

          • Nobody knows, of course, but Roberts gets the case, and he’s not gonna want the court’s imprimatur on reversing such a solid Appeals Court decision saying “No way can you use Seal Team six to murder your political opponents, Citizen Trump.” And SCOTUS is aware of the timing and doesn’t want to be deciding the election by delay. So even if they take the case, it’s highly unlikely they’ll give Trump the delay or vindication he seeks. That’s the sense I get from court watchers who have huge criticisms of this court’s ethical blindness and decision making.

  3. Jill, I have a case of the “how’s” right now.

how can any Christian consider the former president as God ordained? Call me crazy, but a person who brags on groping women, lies with regularity and betrays the people he technically was supposed to lead is not very Christian-like.
how can people even think that when the former president talks of stripping away rights, that he is not talking about theirs too?
how can people ignore data and believe people who are obviously lying to them? Led by the former president, it is the biggest con job around? Trump attorney and fixer Michael Cohen said under oath “Trump is a racist, he is a con artist and he is cheat?” But, just dismiss it.

    • I share all of your “how’s” my friend. That first one, especially … there is apparently a double standard … one set of rules for Donald Trump and another for the rest of the people. We thought it was hyperbolic when he said he could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot someone and he wouldn’t lose votes, but he’s done almost that, and he keeps gaining more support with every horrible word he utters. I cannot dismiss it, but it sure seems that about half this country has no problem with it.

  4. 1920’s..when women stayed home or were ostracized, when blacks were still seen as slaves, when it was illegal to be LGBTQ+, when bi-racial was an invitation to beat someone, lynch them or set them on fire.. When whites were in power over everyone. When Christian was the only religion (never mind all those synagogues, mosques, etc…they didn’t count) and to be anything else was grounds for dismissal from a school or employment. Yea…that’s what MAGA means.

    • Exactly!!! I refuse to go back to those days, and I think there are enough of us to stop them … but we have to make our voices heard loud and clear … and we have to VOTE the garbage out of Congress!

    • True, but since we whitewash history and fail to learn the lessons of history … we keep making the same mistakes over and over. And today, violence, especially against migrants, is being encouraged by some members of one party, and a recent poll said that a significant portion of the people believe that political violence is “justifiable”.

  6. Because, the U.S. is run on the, false beliefs of “we are the servers of justice”, when in reality, the country’s, opportunistic tendencies are becoming, more and more apparent as the wars go on all around, and whatever happens to the “separation of church and state”??? I thought, religions, should not be a part of any, government’s, politics, and, wasn’t that what caused, Great Britain to, collapse, from, centuries, ago? Whenever, religions mixed in with the, politics of, any country, things get, messed up, and, that’s why there’s the, “clause” of, “separation of church and state”. And, that is, combined with, ecery single, politician, working to, scam for the votes, and, all any politician want, is to, get elected, and, they ALL, have, amnesia over the, promises they swore they will keep, to, “we the people.”. Problem is, that, these governments, will, NEVER have, the, welfares of the people in mind, otherwise, why would this world be in, such a, huge, MESS???

  7. “our current lack of adults in Congress”

As they say “a fish stinks from the head down”. So stop complaining about kiddieshit in meaningless congress and start worrying about the toddlers in the White House.

You know last night’s Tucker/Putin interview changed it all! Putin gave them a last chance for peace negotiations … let’s see how tha gonna react now.

Putin Offers INCREDIBLE Terms For Peace With Ukraine In Tucker Carlson Interview!

Experience tells me tho, they will react in completely panicked and irrational ways, like here:

    • Too much homework girl. I had to sit through a two hour supreme court hearing already today.
How long do you think Ukrainians will tolerate their new enslavement to mother Russia?
Mr Ritter spoke of the masterful break through at Avdiivka by the Russians. As a student historic tactics and strategy it struck me of the opportunity a drainage pipe gives to strategic disruption. Ritter mentions Stalingrad, lookup Red October Steel Factory. Luck is a battlefield commanders best friend. I don’t play but I hear it is a popular scenario in the Call of Duty game franchise.
A powerful woman a year younger than our Pumpin Putin. This is who you think sits at the pinnacle of American politics? You are aware that American slaveholders gave the vote to black men near sixty years before women of any color? Any woman of power here knows well the dangers of the sappers of Avdiivka.

      • “How long do you think Ukrainians will tolerate their new enslavement to mother Russia?”
The Russians, cocky as they are, are in kinda catch-22 as well. They don’t wanna rule Ukraine, in fact don’t want anything to do with that shithole. They carved out the parts they felt were theirs anyway, and rescued the population in Donbass, and for the most part denazified Ukraine.

If America would’ve agreed to join in peace talks – there were some offers after the SMO started – instead of sending more money and weapons and telling the Ukros to not give up, we would be looking at a smaller but still functionable Ukraine today. A Ukraine with people and an economy. And as experts said Putin was ready to give up huge parts … parts that are lost for the west now – and will never come back.

Now it looks like it will all fall in Russia’s hands – and they don’t want it! 😮 Give it to the Poles, the Romanians, and Hungarians? No can do, those are all NATO states now. 😐 But that was one of the main objectives for the Russians: No NATO country directly bordering Russia! Not that any of those would start shit with Moscow – but still don’t want NATO anywhere near.

Scott Ritter surely is a good military thinker. I love to listen to his dramatic messages, but I won’t know if he has any geopolitical oversight. Avdiivka, surely is a heavy nut to crack, a town turned into a fortress over the last 20 years or so (yes, that’s how long the US was planning this “unprovoked” war), and it will be one of the deciding factors … but has no influence on the peace talks. Becoz Avdiivka is in Donbass, part of novo-Russia and not to be discussed over. The very few ppl still living in Avdiivka are Russian-Ukros anyway, and wanna be part of the motherland. So Avdiivka is off the table!

I don’t need to look up Stalingrad, have studied that shit at Uni. I don’t see the geopolitical need of knowing details about a 80 years old battle. Russia caught Germany’s 6th army in a cauldron and systematically wiped them out. They removed 300.000 German soldiers off the battlefield. In 1 city, 1 battle. To not ever return!

“This is who you think sits at the pinnacle of American politics?”
No. Not her personally. But she’s a good example for the meltdown happening in D.C. right now.
And a even better example for wasting time bickering instead of trying to save what there still is to save. Time’s running out, my dear fellow westerners.
