Bang!

Yesterday marked exactly six years since the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 students and school staff were shot and killed, and 17 more were wounded.  Tuesday was the one-year anniversary of the deadly mass shooting at Michigan State University, where three students were shot and killed and five others wounded.

Yesterday in Atlanta, four students were shot and wounded after school in the parking lot.  And also yesterday … as Kansas City prepared to celebrate their team, the Kansas City Chiefs’ win in the Super Bowl …

BANG! BANG! BANG!

No, it wasn’t fireworks as part of the celebration.  It was gunshots.  As I write this tonight, at least one person is dead and at least 21 others are injured, some with life-threatening injuries, many of them children.

Way to go, America … just way to go.  We have the reputation for being the least safe nation on the globe in terms of gun violence.  People all ‘round the globe laugh at us, while silently being thankful they don’t have to live here.

I shan’t expand on that, for I’ve said it all many, many times before and you all know my feelings.  Guns simply do not belong in the hands of civilians.  Full stop.  Guns have only one purpose:  to kill.  Too bad the people of Kansas City will now be grieving rather than celebrating.  Where’s the next one going to be?  I’m sure we’ll find out within a matter of days, or perhaps hours.

  1. Sadly as you and I stand on the opposite banks of a river of blood, I concor nothing will change. I don’t trust the ones you want me to trust with guns.

  2. Although other “safe” countries start to get problems with shootings the US is the sad number one. And it doesn’t stop but only gets worse. Again, as long as money, autocracy, and hunger for power is more important than lives this won’t end.

  3. It is never going to end in your country, I’m afraid to say. It is one of the benefits of living in England that we avoid such incidents. Though I am sure that if we had the same easy access to guns, there would be mass shootings here too, human nature being what it is.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  4. Jill, another day in America. More shootings. More victims. More dead. More thoughts and prayers by gun lobby funded politicians. Rinse. Repeat. More…

  5. Nothing will ever change..

It’s who we (not all of us) are. It’s who we keep electing long before trump. We behave and have laws, or lack thereof, that no other western country has. Same with healthcare and lack of fair taxes from the rich. And we have poor public education. And we are gun nuts to the absurd.

We are the most racist country (although we are seeing it in Europe towards the MidEast and some African country refugees). And we are the most fanatically religious of all the modern western countries.

In short, we are a mess of all this plus corruption in high office. MAGA Mike exemplifies the hypocrisy of religion and the height of cowardice.

And the cult of trump, be it the little guy, his minions, other cowardly republicans and the super wealthy republican donors, is beyond help or a moral conscious. And they rule because of our apathy and ignorance.

    • I cannot argue with anything you say, Mary. The last best hope for this nation is for those of us who understand what is wrong to do everything in our power to show others the dangers of the “maga cult” and make sure everyone understands just how crucial it is to vote for people who are qualified and want to govern rather than showboat. Otherwise … I truly do think we will end up like Germany in the 1930s. And we’ll have only ourselves to blame.

        • Ha ha … I had to look up Godwin’s Law, for I had forgotten what it was. Well, these days it’s inevitable, isn’t it? When we have a candidate running for the highest office in the nation quoting Hitler and point-blank saying he intends to “be a dictator” and “retaliate against his ‘enemies'”. Shades of Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Putin, Mussolini …

            • Indeed … there can be no doubt whatsoever that Putin is behind Navalny’s death. He was seen on video just one day before laughing and in good spirits, not sick at all, and then suddenly the next day he collapses and dies. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr … imagine if Trump is elected in November … I wonder if he’ll ask Putin for a box of the poison that was used?
