Keith’s VERY IMPORTANT Message

Have you gotten a text message or email asking you if you’re “still on for lunch” or if your “house is still up for sale” or “how did your interview go” from somebody you never heard of?  You typically assume the sender just hit the wrong number accidentally and perhaps you delete it, or … perhaps you respond to tell them they have the wrong number.  BAD IDEA!  Scamming has become a world-wide multi-billion dollar industry, as our good friend Keith explains …

  2. Phishing and scam emails, texts, and phone calls are getting out of hand. I hate what the world has come to, but I hope people are aware of what’s going on and know how to avoid or determine whether or not to trust something. Cybersecurity is a very important to society, which is why I want to learn more about it and how to prevent such threats, hopefully as a career.

    • They are out of hand, and sadly it is those who can least afford it that are usually the victims. Thumbs up to you for wanting to do something about it! I wish you the best of luck in your career and in your efforts!

  3. I get so much junk e mail, which I put in trash then delete. I have blocked them, but they simply re appear. Is there a way to totally block this? I only use an iPad…no phone, no desktop.

  4. This scam was first brought to my attention by my 23 yr old. The youhts are apparently captivated by its origins in Chinese casinos during covid, slave tech factories and that it is the middle ages that are the majority victims. He worries about his old man even though I’ve told him I intend to spend all the money and die in jail.

  5. I let my phone eliminate anyone who doesn’t have their name on the call, delete any message that looks suspicious, and have turned people on Facebook in to FBI while keeping them on the line. With phone, Kindle and computer it’s possible to get things done that you can’t do with only one device.

  6. I don’t get emails like that. They go right to spam. & texts like that are marked spam as well. Any call that comes through without a person’s name, I don’t answer. If they don’t leave a voicemail with a detailed message (like from a doctor’s office), I don’t respond. I don’t know why anyone would answer a text or email or phone call from someone they don’t know.

    • You are quite diligent. I wish we all could emulate that behavior. I listed a few others in a comment to my post. The one that ticks me off the most is the grandparent scam. Keith

    • I am the same. I have a call-blocker on my phone that only allows people who are in my contact list … and that’s only 5 people! And junk email goes to SPAM, except occasionally one slips through the cracks.

    • Exactly. DH always answers is phone, and then gets stuck talking for fundraisers for fake police/trooper charities. Once he had me answer it; I told them they had the wrong number. They actually said, “well, maybe you can help me then, I’m…” I interrupted with a laugh, asking how I could help them when they had the wrong number! Buttheads. I have no issues with missing things if I don’t know who’s on the other end. If it’s real and they need me, they’ll try back, just like the olden days with the landline.

  7. Any investment, also the legit ones, is the same as gambling. People should be aware of that. Don’t put money at stake like your pension savings or similar, only use money that you can spare, if any, otherwise just don’t.

    • Very sound advice, my friend! Early on, a couple of people were trying to talk me into investing in crypto … I laughed in their faces and told them where they could put their crypto. Glad I stayed out of that mess!!!
