‘Twould seem that I have a lot on my mind lately … so much that it has caused my mind to do that bouncing thing it sometimes does, so today I share just a few of the things that are bouncing around in the empty spaces inside my head.
Why is the murder of a nursing student, Laken Riley, more “horrible” than the murder of school children. Riley was allegedly killed by an undocumented immigrant, and that supposedly makes it a far greater crime than the murders of the children in Uvalde? And … one, just one murder seems to matter more than how many murders every single day? Why are Republicans turning Riley into a martyr for the cause of stopping immigration. How ‘bout we turn the murder of 20+ at Uvalde into martyrs for the cause of gun control?
Before Ohio’s strict photo voter ID law was enacted in 2023, the rejection rate of provisional ballots due to ID issues was between 5%-8%. After the law took effect, the rejection rate increased to more than 28%, according to a report from All Voting is Local.
If I were running for an elected office, I like to think that I would campaign based on what qualifies me for that office, and what I would do to make things better for the people I would be representing. Today, though, campaigns seem to focus only on smearing and denigrating the opposition.
We like to think that we all have certain shared values, but more and more I am convinced there are actually at least two sub-species of the human species, for it becomes obvious that we do not all share the same values, or that we even define those values in the same way.
I write every Wednesday about ‘good people doing good things’ … but what, exactly, makes a ‘good people’? I can tell you one thing for sure; it isn’t wealth. Some good people may be rich, but it is not the money that makes them good people. In fact, most often the wealth blinds them to the needs of others, making them not-so-good people.
Delusional Donny. He bragged that he “proudly ended Roe v. Wade.” Apparently, he thinks that women have lost their right to vote, too? Or perhaps the right/ability to ‘think’ for ourselves? We’re gonna show him and all the rest of those who would like to take us back a century or more … just wait ’til November!!! We are women … hear us roar!
If Trump or his lawyers thought for one minute that he had a snowball’s chance of winning the lawsuit in New York, they wouldn’t be playing the delay game, but given their desperate attempts to delay the trial, it’s obvious that they already know that they are doomed. Today, Trump has filed yet another appeal to try to halt or delay the trial that is scheduled to start on Monday. This appeal, like the previous ones, will go nowhere … his lawyers are surely smart enough to know they are wasting their time … but it costs We the Taxpayers still more money!
And in another case, the stolen documents case down in Florida, Judge Aileen Cannon agreed with Jack Smith to protect witnesses by agreeing to redact the names of about two dozen government witnesses from a public version of one of their court filings to protect them against potential threats or harassment. BUT … she claimed that his request to protect “all potential government witnesses without differentiation” was “sweeping in nature” and that she was “unable to locate another high-profile case” in which a judge had issued a similar decision. Well duh … there has never been another case where such a cruel and vengeful ‘man’ with so much political clout has been on trial in such a high-profile case. There has also never before since the 19th century been a time when this nation was as divided and teetering on the brink of violence as it is today. This is a first and is unique. Too bad they couldn’t have chosen a judge with a brain and a conscience!
An article in The Guardian yesterday cites a survey showing that “44% of recent gun purchasers, and a staggering 56% of those who always or nearly always carry loaded guns in public” believe that political violence could be justified. WHY, then, are we still selling guns to these people … or to any people, for that matter??? I’ll have more about this soon, but in today’s political climate here in the U.S., more guns in the hands of people who think political violence is justifiable or justified is the last thing we need! Guns already outnumber people by a large margin, and it seems that the lunatics outnumber the sane! What a recipe for disaster.
There’s more bouncing around up there, but this is just a taste of what passes through my brain in the course of a day!

If I were you I would turn your brain off during waking hours. Let it loose while you are sleeping, you’ll live longer.

The “on/off” switch seems to be broken … it doesn’t allow me to turn if off during waking hours OR at night! And why on earth would I want to live longer in THIS world???

I read the background to the paper linked to the Guardian Article.
Whereas we should not be surprised that more Strong Republicans than Strong Democrats embrace violence as a possible solution, the number of Strong Democrats is sufficient to indicate should communal violence be instigated by Strong Republicans there would be a reaction by Strong Democrats. Exactly in what form is difficult to say.
Again it is necessary to say if the Republican Right in Washington and the States capitols keep pushing their agendas, they will not be prepared for what could be waiting down the road.

Very true, Roger. But … fighting violence with violence can only lead to disaster. I don’t know the solution, but I will never believe that guns and violence are any part of it. Sigh.

Sadly and tragically Jill it is all too often part of the reaction which then becomes The History.
It is essential the Vote is mobilised unconditionally behind Biden, I don’t care how old he is, and his support for Israel has to be put aside until this election is sorted.
The USA cannot afford a Republican win.

Agreed … but how do we convince people to do that?

It would appear that the time has come to use scare tactics in the adverts to shake them up:
1. One with a montage of various ‘militia’ groups parading around. End with a caption ‘The Republican Party’ does not condemn this. Do you?
2. A drama ad which shows a household being approached by a firstly friendly couple asking if they would like to come to Church. Then the couple returning and becoming increasingly hostile with a larger group Ending with. a voice over. ‘Of course, it couldn’t happen….Could it?’
3. A few folk at a dinner talking about why someone (use any minority group) isn’t here. Reluctant conversation that they are afraid to come out now. Ending voice over….’Are you worried about your family or friends?’ The Republican Party doesn’t seem to be.
It’s a dirty war they started, if you want to win it you don’t play ‘nice’.
Scare them to the voting box.

You always amaze me, Sir Roger! Just that quick, you’ve come up with three hard-hitting, perfect for the times ads, while highly paid campaign ad guys ‘n gals are still chewing on their pencils trying to think of something! All three are great, and I think I’d start with the first one. Yes, I think it’s time to take the gloves off and fight fire with fire.

Glad to help out Jill.
It is essential for Democrats to be putting the ‘warnings’ out. Of course The MAGA affiliates and drones in Washington and on the media who will respond. Experience suggests this will be in the form of hysterical conspiracy stuff, which should be countered with rational facts and an indication that if this the best the MAGA can come up with, then you can tell what sort of government they would bring.

I saw an interview today that I’ll be posting, probably tomorrow afternoon, that highlights exactly what you say. The interviewer stuck to the facts and asked sensible, intelligent questions, and the interviewee couldn’t stay on topic but kept coming back to the same talking point, making himself look like a braying ass!

Heh heh … as if I would EVER vote for any Republican again??? But please, just in case I lose the rest of my marbles before November, do remind me again in November that I must vote only for Democrats! Although … come to think of it … I am already subhuman in the eyes of Republicans, for I am a woman. Sigh. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr …
