When does the bar for decency get so low that it cannot go any lower? Just when you thought the bar was actually lying on the ground, it manages to go even lower … below ground, apparently. My jaw dropped yesterday when I first read that Felon Trump had basically tried to turn a solemn ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery into a political rally, a photo op. This … this is the ultimate disrespect for every single person in this nation. Dan Rather has the details …
A New Low
Trump disrespects a shrine to American heroes
28 August 2024
It takes a lot to really rile me. Silly stuff like selling $60 autographed Bibles or shilling $99 digital trading cards of himself are at the core of Donald Trump’s huckster persona.
But then there’s another Trump, one who has zero respect for the institutions that make this country what it is, and that is especially true of the United States military.
Trump has a long record of disrespecting those who have served, using disparaging terms. But those were just words.
On Monday, he crossed a line.
Trump visited Arlington National Cemetery, among the most solemn and sacred places in the United States. It’s where 400,000 members of the armed services are buried, along with many of their spouses and dependents. It’s also the final resting place for two presidents and scores of war heroes.
Trump started with what should have been a somber and respectful wreath laying. It was not. It was a campaign stunt. The wreaths were for the 13 soldiers who died in a suicide bombing three years ago as American troops were withdrawing from Afghanistan. Trump has tried to make the “chaotic withdrawal” — his words — of troops and civilians and the ensuing casualties a campaign issue, blaming President Biden and Vice President Harris. He has referred to it as “the most embarrassing moment” in American history.
Using a visit to Arlington National Cemetery for political gain is horrific enough, but it gets worse. After the wreath laying, Trump moved on to the graves of two of the 13 Marines. According to National Public Radio, Trump staffers were told by an Army official they could not shoot campaign video or photographs at the grave site because it was against federal law. The official tried to prevent them from doing so. He was then verbally abused and shoved out of the way by Trump staffers, according to NPR.
Once the way had been cleared, Trump smiled wide and gave one of his gratuitous thumbs up while a photographer snapped away … among the graves of Marines who gave their lives for their country.
The photo soon made its way onto social media, just as Trump had hoped. My reaction was the same as many others who have personally witnessed Americans dying on the battlefield. I was sickened.
In a statement, Arlington National Cemetery officials said, “Federal law prohibits political campaign or election-related activities within Army National Military Cemeteries, to include photographers, content creators or any other persons attending for purposes, or in direct support of a partisan political candidate’s campaign. Arlington National Cemetery reinforced and widely shared this law and its prohibitions with all participants.” An official report has been filed. I won’t be holding my breath for anything to come of that.
Trump’s campaign has responded by saying their photographer was “permitted on the premises” and that the Arlington official was “clearly suffering from a mental health episode.” The campaign has failed to release promised footage of the incident exonerating the staffers.
Trump’s latest leaves me angry and appalled, that he would denigrate this solemn place for a photo op. How can this man be put back in charge of the country’s military when he clearly doesn’t respect them or what they do?
Remember that Trump got out of serving in Vietnam because of “bone spurs.” He has called American fighting men and women who paid the ultimate price “suckers and losers.” He has ridiculed prisoners of war, like the late Senator John McCain. “He’s not a war hero, he’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured, okay?” Trump said during the 2016 campaign.
Despite its apparent illegality, there will likely be no legal repercussions for this callous act of disrespect. But could there be an even bigger consequence? Losing the election.

Well the answer to your question is…..No.
And by now the Trump Defence Machine has geared up into action and gathered enough folk to say they ‘gave permission’ and its all good. And the person shoved aside has been recorded as not taking the matter further…. If, according to the Trump it ever happened.
This very apt song came into my head, way back from 1971 (sorry the important chorus ‘He gonna step on you again’ is a bit muted and not shown on as a lyric line on the screen)

Except that … the Army issued a statement saying that Trump and his lackeys had been told in advance that they could not take photographs and they blatantly disobeyed that order. I doubt they’ll be allowed in again!
Oh that song! It’s as if it was written with Trump in mind!

The Armed Forces establishment have had it in for Trump since day one. They’ll not miss a chance to put him down.

Can you blame them? Now, they should despise him even more than ever.

Yeah. Agitate the bladders of the armed and the security forces.
In these turbulent times that might not be a good idea.

I would think that the republican party would get him to shut his mouth because every time he opens it, he digs himself a hole. I would think they’d realize they could not win with his constant hate speech, rhetoric and lies. His own words don’t seem to come back to haunt him with his campaign people.🙄

I have no doubt they have tried to get him to shut up, but he does exactly what he wants and listens to no one. That’s why his team cut short the interview he did with the Black journalists, because he kept shooting himself in the foot!

I hear the Army came out with a statement defending the employee. Trump’s party were informed where they could not take photos or use for campaigns. The Army said the employee was doing their job. Trump owes that person an apology and the videos should be taken down.

Yes, they did, and I was glad, but I’m also disturbed that the employee does not wish to pursue the matter, for she is afraid of the consequences by the Trumpist cult. ‘Tis a sad state of affairs. Oh yes, Trump definitely owes her an apology, but don’t hold your breath, for I doubt Trump has ever sincerely apologized to anyone for anything in his life.

suffering from a mental health episode … If you ask me, the people suffering from mental health problems are those who support Trump!
This latest action on his part is not just disrespectful … it is ugly, repulsive, despicable, slimy … and Unforgiveable.

Agreed … but guess what I learned today? The Arlington staff member who was shoved aside by Trump’s people, who they claim was “suffering from a mental health issue”, was a woman. I doubt they’d have made that claim if it had been a man. I’m surprised they didn’t accuse her of having PMS! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr …

Hear!, hear!, Mr. Rather, let your profile in courage continue to shine a light upon your integrity.
That said, some fake people trumpet “law & order” as long as it applies to everyone but them. What is very concerning is that even after Ms. Daniel’s (Stormy) ordeal even amid the #MeToo alarm, some women voters could care less about her experience. Moreover, some veterans in spite of being labeled “suckers & losers” seem to be spellbound by his do as I say not as I do mantra.
Too many brave men and women have paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend Democracy than to see our Democracy crumble amid a “tell the people what they what to hear” rabble-rouser rather than actually have anything of real substance to offer.
Wonder what derisive nicknames he would have at the ready if he was competing against genuine American patriots like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Frankling D. Roosevelt, Dwight David Eisenhower…
When will the gullible people backing this man begin to experience buyer’s remorse?

Thanks, Gene. You’ve hit the nail on the head when you say that “some fake people trumpet ‘law & order’ as long as it applies to everyone but them.” I’ve long since lost count of the number of times I’ve said that “NOBODY is above the law”, but the Supreme Court ruled otherwise.
Like you, I am perpetually puzzled by women, veterans, Black people, LGBTQ people who would still vote for him. To me, he has alienated all of those groups with his hateful rhetoric and actions, but some people seem to prefer entertainment to serious governance. As to your last question … when they no longer see the benefit to them. As long as they can benefit by hanging onto his coattails, they will do so, for they have no values, no conscience. Sigh.

And this isn’t the most despicable thing he’s done this week.
NYT columnist Charles Blow recently opined that Donald J. McApprenticeFace has turned Republicans into reality show contestants. I only disagree with his point on the timing — they were already down that road.
They have been playing their version of Survivor Island since Obama was elected in 2008. That’s when I first started seeing the werd “RINO” (Republican In Name Only). It became an appellation to avoid. I thin the earliest consequence for being a RINO came about in the run up to the 2014 mid term election when Eric Cantor became the only sitting House Majority Leader to lose a primary election. He lost to a “Tea Party” member (for our ‘ropean brothers and sisters here — the Tea Party were/are Republicans who are next level extremist conservative).
Eric Cantor lost to a fellow Republican because he dared to suggest we should have a debate on immigration. He was voted off the island.
I brought that up fer context concerning the moar despicable thing DJT did this week.
Jesse Watters, on his Monday show during the primo 8-9 slot issued this coded dog-whistle about Ms. Harris, “She’s going to get paralyzed in the Situation Room while the generals have their way with her.”
He has claimed that the comment was “misconstrued”. Nope, I know a coded message when I read it. Conservatives have been using that language for decades.
However, not to be outdone, Donald J. McDespicableFace went on social media, amplifying an implication that Ms. Harris performed oral sex on San Francisco mayor Willie Brown for political advancement.
Republicans are racing to the bottom with their candidate for prezzy leading from the front.

Oh yes, I read that comment and thought, no, that is EXACTLY what he meant to say. Bastard. And Trump’s about Ms. Harris and Ms. Clinton and ‘blow jobs’ is equally despicable! And yet, some people love this stuff … for them it’s more about the entertainment value than responsible governance. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr …

Jill, I guess this is his big eraser of every bad thing he has said about the military. It reminds me of his photo shoot with the upside down bible where he exposed people to walk across the street during riots.
With Trump it is all about perception. Paraphrasing Ricardo Montalban in a car commercial “it is better to look good than be good.”

The height of disrespect … not only for all service members past and present, but for the people of this nation as a whole. I read today that the Arlington staff member who was physically shoved aside by Trump’s people was a woman and she is declining to pursue the matter for she is afraid of what Trump’s ‘cult’ would do, afraid of his “retribution”. We surely have sunk to an all-time low to even be allowing this ‘man’ on the ballot for the highest office in the land.

Jill, I have a hard time understanding why military people support Trump. There is a huge disconnect. Keith

I completely agree. I would have loved it if one of those family members of a veteran had turned ’round and spat in his face!

With Rumpelstiltskin’s long long track record over the years of audaciously insulting ALL veterans, both alive, critically wounded, or KIA, obviously his campaign directors and advisors are back-peddling like crazy MoFo’s desperately trying to gain back our huge American service men’s & women’s and their families’ possible vote in November. Plain and simple. Which makes this completely FAKE!
However, this is indeed typical of an abysmally depraved, indecent man we all know too well. And apologies to all decent men and women… calling him a “man” is far too generous on my part. 😒

I cannot conceive of ANY veteran or family of one voting for Trump, yet I’m sure there are some who still will. Whenever I have to use that word in relationship to Trump, I ALWAYS put it in quotes … ‘man’ … for to me is is a monster, not a real person.

Respect.😔We MUST not other him! He is ill. Much as a rabid dog must be put down to protect the community he must be dealt with. It is a compassionate act as much as protective. If we have to strip him of his humanity before administering justice I fear he is not the monster.

Sorry, Richard, but I have to disagree with you on this one. He’s 78 years old and has not once in all those years acted out of humanity or kindness, but his ‘career’ as a bully began while he was still in school and has never stopped since. No, there’s nothing there that I can respect. ‘Strip him of his humanity’??? He never had any to begin with! A man who threatens the things he has threatened, such as executing his ‘enemies’, deporting millions of immigrants, etc., has no humanity but is, in fact, a monster.

The respect was for you dear.😔I hope you won’t mind if I don’t participate when you and your fellow humans hang him and his mistress, gutted, in the square.

OH!!! I’m so sorry, Richard! I mistakenly thought you were telling me that I should respect him! Forgive me, please? And thank you. I won’t participate when he is hung in the square, either. In fact, I would much prefer that he live to see the inside of his prison cell and spend a few years there!

Ecerything that Trump does, is to, get that, spotlight on him, because, he needed the world to pay attention to him, to make him feel, important, and, that still only just, showed what all he cared about is, his own, self, and yet, a lot of voters are, still, choosing to get fooled by him. This is a man, with, NO sense of shame, who does NOT, know his own roots (being a son of Irish immigrant and, condemns, immigrants), and, on top of that, he checked, ALL the marks of a, PSYCHOPATH, not to mention a total lack of sense of morality. And, because of his ability to, get the masses to, follow him by his persuasive means, chances are, he will, easily win the Nov. election.

You are so right. He is an egomaniac who isn’t happy unless all the attention is on him, whether that attention is positive or negative. He is not even, by my definition, a human. I don’t think he will win in November … at least not the popular vote. In part, his own ramped up message of hatred and violence are turning people off, especially as compared to the positive, hopeful messages of Kamala Harris. But also, his running mate, J.D. Vance, is doing him no favours by sticking his big foot in his mouth every time he opens his mouth! That said, I cannot say about the Electoral College vote … the last two Republican presidents won the Electoral vote even after losing the popular vote. And, of course, there is concern over the plans being made by the Republicans to cause chaos post-election if Trump loses.
