♫ Break Away ♫

Having had occasion to flip back through my many pages of notes this last week or so, I realized that I have made note of numerous requests that I’ve never fulfilled!  Hey … c’mon … I’m old 👵 and my brain is calcifying … gimme a break!  Anyway, for the next few days I thought I’d try to honour some of those requests and mentions from my readers, since I seem to be remarkably uninspired!  This first one was mentioned by Pete as being one of his favourite Beach Boys tunes …

From Wikipedia …

According to Brian, Murry came up with the idea for the song from watching The Joey Bishop Show on television while it proclaimed, “We’re gonna break away for a minute and we’ll be right back!”. Brian, at his piano, then composed the song with Murry as they “plunked and plunked and plunked” and “finally got a song going.” At another time, Brian said that the Monkees inspired him to write this song The Monkees had appeared on the aforementioned television program on April 29, 1969 but “Break Away” was recorded prior to that date.

Asked why Murry had used a pseudonym, Brian responded that his father “didn’t want anyone to know that he wrote it with me.” On another occasion, Brian gave a different answer to the same journalist, saying “I don’t know. He was nutty. He was crazy, that was his fictitious name.”

Brian Wilson spoke positively of the song in a later interview, commenting, “That’s a beautiful song. I think it might be one of my most underrated songs.”

This charted at #6 in the UK, #63 in the U.S. (that ‘splains why I don’t recall hearing it before), and not at all in Canada as best I can tell.

Break Away

The Beach Boys

I’m thinking about a-this whole world
Late at night I think about the love of this whole world
Lots of different people everywhere
And when I go anywhere I see love, I see love, I see love

When girls get mad at boys and go
Many times they’re just putting on a show
But when they leave you wait alone

You are there like everywhere, like everyone you see
Happy ’cause you’re living and you’re free

Now here comes another day for your love
(I’m thinking about a-this whole world)
(A-this whole world) love

Late at night I think about the love of this whole world

  1. This is nice.
For a smidge of a second I thought you were referring to this Jill:

    The Springfields (our Dusty…so young)
    Lyrics
    Breakaway, my heart is cryin’
    Breakaway, the time is flyin’
So, I’m gonna tell myself don’t sit and mourn
    Lookin’ sad and so forlorn
Tell myself I’m glad I’m born
    Well, I’m gonna breakaway
    Breakaway, the breeze is sighin’
    Breakaway, the time is flyin’
So, I’m gonna pack a bag and get my coat
Lock my door and leave a note
Take a train or take a boat
    Well, I’m gonna breakaway
I’ll take me round from town to town
I’ll see the friends I knew
I left ’em by the wayside
But I know their hearts are true
    I’ll give myself a holiday
    I need it oh-so bad
And if I find a new love
    I’ll be glad, glad, glad
    Breakaway, my heart is cryin’
    Breakaway, the time is flyin’
So, I’m gonna find out what this world can give
While I’m young I’m gonna live
    That’s my plan, I’m positive
    Well, I’m gonna breakaway
I’ll take me round from town to town
I’ll see the friends I knew
I left ’em by the wayside
But, I know their hearts are true
    I’ll give myself a holiday
    I need it oh-so bad
And if I find a new love
    I’ll be glad, glad, glad
    Breakaway, my heart is cryin’
    Breakaway, the time is flyin’
So, I’m gonna find out what this world can give
While I’m young I’m gonna live
    That’s my plan, I’m positive
    Well, I’m gonna breakaway
    Gonna breakaway
    Gonna breakaway
    Breakaway
    Breakaway

  2. I like this one really well-thank you, Jill! I didn’t know the words, though; didn’t hear it often, but I do remember it.

When I saw the header in email, my first thought was a different one I love; Art Garfunkel’s “Breakaway.” I thought his title was two words, too. So I’ve had an enchanting earworm off and on until now when I’m finally reading this, and have a different one!
