Yes, it’s a redux, but I’ve only played it once, and that was back in October 2020. And I like it … I hope you will, too!
Released as a single in 1988, the song hit #1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It also went to #1 in Canada and #8 in the UK that year.
Michael says that it’s a very personal song, and one that is very close to his heart. He said it’s “about my attitude coming out of my last relationship and into this new one when I was pretty unwilling to be open to anything.”
Elton John said on his Beats 1 radio show, Rocket Hour, “I don’t get jealous of many songs, but I’m jealous of this song. I’d love to have written this.”
One More Try
George Michael
I’ve had enough of danger
And people on the streets
I’m looking out for angels
Just trying to find some peace
Now I think it’s time
That you let me know
So if you love me
Say you love me
But if you don’t just let me go
‘Cause teacher
There are things that I don’t want to learn
And the last one I had
Made me cry
So I don’t want to learn to
Hold you, touch you
Think that you’re mine
Because it ain’t no joy
For an uptown boy
Whose teacher has told him goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
When you were just a stranger
And I was at your feet
I didn’t feel the danger
Now I feel the heat
That look in your eyes
Telling me no
So you think that you love me
Know that you need me
I wrote the song, I know it’s wrong
Just let me go
And teacher
There are things
That I don’t want to learn
Oh the last one I had
Made me cry
So I don’t want to learn to
Hold you, touch you
Think that you’re mine
Because it ain’t no joy
For an uptown boy
Whose teacher has told him goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
So when you say that you need me
That you’ll never leave me
I know you’re wrong, you’re not that strong
Let me go
And teacher
There are things
That I still have to learn
But the one thing I have is my pride
Oh so I don’t want to learn
Hold you, touch you
Think that you’re mine
Because there ain’t no joy
For an uptown boy
Who just isn’t willing to try
I’m so cold
Inside
Maybe just one more try

Thumbs up from me. George could hit those high notes so easily.

I’m so glad you liked it, Pete! Did you like WHAM, too, or prefer George on his own?

Liked them both.

Beautiful song! I could absolutely hear Elton singing this. 🎶

I could too! And I had this album back in the day, and that thought never occurred to me. Not until I read this, and then the light bulb came on!

George wasn’t my music really but he had a wonderful voice. I thought of all the singers who tried to sing the Freddie Mercury and Queen songs, he handled them better than anyone apart from Freddie.

No, he wasn’t among those I would consider in my top ten list, either, but he did have a grand voice and I really enjoyed this song!
How are the plans coming for our trip to Switzerland? I want out of here so badly!!!

I had seen your comment earlier, chuckled a bit, but hadn’t begun answering comments yet at that point. I was chipping away at my 700+ emails, reading one rather in-depth analytical piece, when all of a sudden daughter Chris burst out laughing so hard she could barely catch her breath. I looked askance, and she managed to sputter between laughing … “Clive’s comment on your music post … hilarious!!!” Ah yes, I said, that’s our Clive! Glad it helped with your insomnia, dear friend! 🤣

I’m pleased Chris liked the comment too 👍

Jill, I like the lyrics on this song. One thing that gets lost on folks who focused on his looks (girls and guys) is Michael could really sing.

I had a lot of time for George, and thought his solo career was much better than his time in ‘Wham’. I own some of his albums on CD, but it’s a long time since I played them.
Best wishes, Pete.

I’m glad you liked George, Pete! I am not particularly surprised that you didn’t care as much for ‘Wham’ … I liked some of their stuff, but not all.

Wham were fine as a pop group, I just preferred George’s more serious side later.

Wham only crossed my radar occasionally back in the day, so I really don’t know much about either them or George Michael … more my daughter’s forte.

Good tune, but not one of my favorites of his. I think “Freedom! 90″is moar personal, moar revelatory and moar personal and really RAWKS! My favorite would be the less known “Cowboys and Angels”. It’s one of those 7 minute songs, so I won’t post it here.
George Michael would be the definition of “tortured artist” — molded/forced into a popstar image packaged to appeal to young women, when he was gay. Drug use was inevitable, I suppose.
Anyway, time to innerduce you to Mink DeVille of that era. Not really top 40 radio material, but this was widely played at the student run college radio stations here in Marthasville/Terminus and it’s a rockin’ number:

2 “moar personals”? One of those shoulda been moar autobiographical. Imma blame that on only one cup of covfefe so far this morning and a waning vaxx combo delirium. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Surprisingly, I actually LIKE the Mink DeVille song! It is, indeed, a “rockin’ number”! Thank you, Kamchak!!!
