♫ You Are My Lady ♫

I went looking for soul food tonight … the kind you listen to and absorb, not the kind you chew up and digest.  And I stumbled on a long-forgotten favourite by Freddie Jackson.  Unfortunately, I find very little background trivia about the song.  It was the second single from his debut album, Rock Me Tonight. Like his debut single, You Are My Lady hit #1 on the R&B charts for two weeks, and was Jackson’s most successful crossover single of his career, peaking at #12 on the Hot 100. It also reached #49 in the UK.  And th-th-that’s all I know, f-f-folks!  (My Elmer Fudd imitation needs work, yes?)

You Are My Lady
Freddie Jackson

There’s something that I want to say
But words sometimes get in the way
I just want to show my feelings for you
There’s nothing that I’d rather do
Than spend every moment with you
I guess you should know I love you so

You are my lady
You’re everything I need and more
You are my lady
You’re all I’m living for

There’s no way that I can resist your precious kiss
Girl you’ve got me so hypnotized
Just say that you’ll stay with me (you’ll stay)
‘Cause our love was meant to be
I promise to love you more each day

You are my lady (my love)
You’re everything I need and more
You are my lady
You’re all I’m living for
You are my lady yeah (my love)
You’re everything I need and more
You are my lady
You’re all I’m living for

I love your shine-shine-shine-shine
Let’s make it last until the end of time, yeah

You are my lady, yes you are (my love)
Everything I need and more
You are my lady
You’re all I’m living for
You are my lady (my love)
You’re everything I need
You are my lady
You’re all I’m living for

Wanna tell the world (you are my lady)
Back to my girl (everything I need and more)
Sweeter than the day of days before (you are my lady)
Ooh, you’re all I’m living for
I love the way you move girl (you are my lady)
I love you so yeah (everything I need and more)
Love won’t let me love you baby-baby (you are my lady)

♫ There’ll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry) ♫

I have my favourites, as you all know by now … Elton, Stevie, Lionel, The Four Tops, Stevie, Marvin Gaye, Whitney Houston, Stevie, etc.  Oh, and did I mention Stevie, as in Stevie Wonder?  But I love many other artists from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s … I just forget about them sometimes.  One such is Billy Ocean … I have played 2 or 3 of his before, but I find I have never played this one …

Y’know, it’s funny … if I am feeling down, I look to happy, cheery tunes to try to turn my mood around.  But, I have a couple of friends of the male persuasion who turn to dark or sad songs when they are feeling low.  Is this, I wonder, a ‘guy thing’, or am I the anomaly?

This song was written and produced by Wayne Brathwaite and Barry Eastmond; Ocean was also credited as a co-writer for the song. It appears on Ocean’s 1986 album Love Zone, which was released on Jive Records.

According to Barry Eastmond, the song was inspired by an incident involving Ocean’s hit song of the previous year, SuddenlyEastmond told Fred Bronson in The Billboard Book of Number One Hits about a friend of his wife’s who had recently broken up with a long-term boyfriend. While at a party given by her new boyfriend, the song Suddenly, which reminded her of her previous boyfriend, was played, and she broke down in tears. Eastmond and his co-writers used this scenario as the basis for writing There’ll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry).

This hit #1 in the U.S. and Canada, #12 in the UK.

There’ll Be Sad Songs
Billy Ocean

Sometimes I wonder by the look in your eyes
When I’m standing beside you
There’s a fever burning deep inside.

Is there another in your memory
Do you think of that someone
When you hear that special melody?

I always stop and think of you especially
When the words of a love song touch the very heart of me.

[Chorus:]
There’ll be sad songs to make you cry –
Love songs often do.
They can touch the heart of someone new –
Saying I love you.
(I Love you)

I often wonder how it could be – you loving me –
Two hearts in perfect harmony.
I’ll count the hours until that day
A rhapsody plays a melody for you and me.

Until the moment that you give your love to me
You’re the one I care for
The one that I would wait for.

[Chorus x2]

You’re my desire
You take me higher
My love is like a river running so deep.

I always stop and think of you especially
When the words of a love song touch the very heart of me.

[Chorus x2]

Sayin’ I love you…
I love you
