A Few More Snippets …

I tried watching Kayleigh McEnany’s press briefing a few minutes ago, but all I could do was shake my head and laugh … she is as a puppet on a string … whatever is asked, she will find a way to praise Trump.  I wonder if her conscience pricks her at night, or if she truly believes the lies she spews?  In addition, since all the reporters were masked and there was no closed captioning, I wasn’t able to understand any of the questions, so I gave up on it … I’ll read the transcript later.  Anyway, there is more to talk about today …

Breaking News!

Mitch McConnell Congratulates Biden for Being the President-elect!

It should not be “Breaking News” that the Senate Majority leader congratulates the President-elect on winning the election more than a month after the fact.  It’s what I call ‘common courtesy’, part of our government leaders treating each other with respect.  But, the very first “Breaking News” alerts on my phone were just that … all three of them, from The Guardian, The Washington Post, and the New York Times.  Said McConnell …

“Yesterday, electors met in all 50 states. So, as of this morning, our country officially has a President-elect and a Vice President-elect. Many millions of us had hoped the presidential election would yield a different result. But our system of government has processes to determine who will be sworn in on January the 20th. The Electoral College has spoken. So today I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden.”

McConnell’s move is more than a month too late, and came only after the Electoral College voted to confirm the will of the people.  Apparently ol’ Mitchie finally woke to the inevitable and realized that he’s going to have to work with the Biden/Harris team for at least the next four years.

Trump, on the other hand, is still continuing to live in his little fantasy world …

“Tremendous evidence pouring in on voter fraud.  There has never been anything like this in our country!”

Twitter responsibly labeled his tweet with “This claim on election fraud is disputed”.

Remember, folks … WE are paying him to sit around and think up this nonsense!

Say WHAT???

Trump is now scraping the bottom of the barrel for lawyers, as all those who have decent reputations have distanced themselves from his frivolous lawsuits.  One of those who still clings to Trump in hopes of … I have no idea what his hopes are … is Lucian Lincoln “Lin” Wood.  Now, ol’ Lin has been busy of late, filing lawsuits with no evidence to back them up, but yesterday he went a couple of steps too far in my book.

Lin posted on Twitter …

“Better to be safe than sorry. Make sure you have PLENTY of water, food, flashlights & batteries, candles, radio, 2nd Amendment supplies, & a plan to meet with leaders of your communities. Remember we only have 1 President at a time. Our leader is @realDonaldTrump, not Biden.”

“2nd Amendment supplies”???  Guns and ammo?  What … is he planning a war?  But he wasn’t done.  Speaking of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, both Republicans, he said they should be jailed!

“President Trump @realDonaldTrump is a genuinely good man. He does not really like to fire people. I bet he dislikes putting people in jail, especially “Republicans.”  He gave @BrianKempGA & @GaSecofState every chance to get it right. They refused. They will soon be going to jail.”

Never before have I seen a president surround himself with such pond scum as Lawyer Wood … and others.  The only thing Kemp and Raffensperger did was their job … they upheld the law … so no, they aren’t going to jail, but I have a feeling Mr. Wood may soon lose his license to practice law, as well he should!

And if you think U.S. politics are screwed up …

The headline in The Guardian reads …

Paris city hall fined for putting too many women in senior roles

Paris city authorities have been fined for employing too many women in senior positions, a decision mocked as absurd by the mayor, Anne Hidalgo, on Tuesday.

The fine of €90,000 (£81,000) was demanded by France’s public service ministry on the grounds that Paris city hall had broken national rules on gender parity in its 2018 staffing.

“I am happy to announce that we have been fined,” Hidalgo, a member of the Socialist party, told a city council meeting, adding that she had been filled with joy when she learned of the penalty.

Hidalgo said she was faulted because 11 women and only five men were named to management positions in city hall in 2018, meaning that 69% of the appointments went to women.

One thing is for sure … there’s no danger of that happening here in the U.S. any time soon!

Snarky @#$%& Snippets

If you live outside the United States, count your blessings.  This nation has lost its collective marbles! I would damn near kill for just one day with no mention of anyone whose last name is Trump in the news.  I would absolutely do a happy dance if all the republicans in the nation suddenly developed laryngitis and had to go 24 hours without opening their nasty mouths!  We can’t even get weekend breaks from the chaos and craziness!  In keeping with the chaos, I now have news overload which has given me a severe case of mind bounce (not to mention high blood pressure), so this morning you get a bunch of unrelated tiny snippets with an abundance of snark … I think.

You’re Fired (by form letter via email)

Trump fired the Pentagon business advisory board … all nine of them.  Members of the board received a brief email from Joshua Whitehouse, the White House liaison to the Department of Defense, that simply said, “if you are receiving this e-mail, your membership on the Defense Business Board has expired or is coming to an end.”  What a way to find out you’re ousted, eh?

But wait … that’s not even the worst part.  Two of the people Trump named to the board to replace the fired members are none other than Corey Lewandowski and David Bossie, his former campaign manager and deputy campaign manager, neither of whom have served a single day in the military or have a hair on their head’s worth of experience in the defense industry!  My damn cat has as much to qualify him for a seat on that board as those two ass-lickers have.  Former Defense Secretary William Cohen called the move,  “… an obscene gesture to the Biden supporters and to at least the majority of the American people.”

Idiot Extraordinaire

Former Republican congresswoman Michele Bachmann, who made a brief and unsuccessful attempt to gain the republican nomination for president in 2012, just can’t seem to sit down and shut up.  Her latest is a short video whereby she pleads with god to “deliver Donald Trump a second term”.  I don’t need to add my snark to that one, for it speaks for itself.

Gaetz banned from New Jersey!

Matt-GaetzI’ve written so many times about the punk republican representative Matt Gaetz that I can even spell his name without looking it up.  He was arrested for Driving Under the Influence in 2008, and two years later elected to the Florida House of Representatives.  Since 2017, he’s been making a fool of himself in the U.S. House of Representatives.  He’s a punk who thinks his antics are cute … he reminds me of a teenage boy, but he is in fact 38 years of age.

The latest?  He doesn’t seem to understand that rules apply to him, too.  He attended a ‘secret party’ held by the Young Republicans club in Jersey City, New Jersey, with at least 150 other people in attendance.  Right smack in the middle of a new surge of the coronavirus in that area, and where such large gatherings were expressly forbidden by order of Governor Phil Murphy.  Nobody wore a mask at the gathering.

While not officially banned, Governor Murphy said, “You are not welcome in New Jersey, and frankly I don’t ever want you back in this state.”  Two thumbs up to Governor Murphy for having the courage to speak up and speak out.  As for Gaetz … Floridians apparently think he’s cool, for he was re-elected again last month.  Way to go, Florida … here, have another drink of Kool Aid.

Isn’t coercion illegal?

I seriously long for the day Trump is naught but a bad memory … I would love not to see his name ever again.  The latest?  He’s once again trying to coerce Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to convene an emergency session of the Georgia State Legislature so it can name its own electors, who would in turn vote for him instead of President-Elect Joe Biden.  This, my friends, is how leaders of banana republics deport themselves, not the ‘leader’ of a democratic republic of 330 million people!!!  WE THE PEOPLE spoke on November 3rd!  Donald F***ing Trump has no right whatsoever to attempt to override our voices!

In case you can’t tell, I am livid.  Donald Trump should be arrested right now and kept in a jail cell, given only bread and water until the evening of January 20th.  He has broken just about every law I can think of, and this is beyond unconscionable … it is criminal!  He is a crook, worse than President Richard M. Nixon ever thought about being.  He is as bad as Jeffrey Dahmer!

Kemp, for whom I have zero respect, to his credit refused Trump’s ‘request’.  Georgia has had two full recounts and an audit and certified the election for Joe Biden not just once, but twice.  No evidence of any notable fraud has been found.  Why oh why hasn’t Melania held a pillow over his head some night?

Ol’ Two-Faced Lindsey is at it again

Twitter & Facebook CEO's Testify Remotely Before Senate Judiciary CommitteeSpeaking of men with no conscience … Lindsey Graham is in the news again.  You remember Lindsey … the ‘man’ who claimed to be Senator John McCain’s ‘best friend’ and then stabbed him in the back?  Lindsey made an appearance on Fox ‘News’ the other day.  When Sean Hannity asked him about the possibility of Donald Trump facing a Federal investigation for crimes he’s accused of committing in office and during his campaign, Lindsey replied, falsely claiming that Robert Mueller’s investigation “found nothing,” and promising that if both Republicans win the two special elections coming up in January in Georgia, “the Attorney General nominee…will come before the judiciary committee…there’s no way in hell anyone’s gonna get confirmed …”

Tell you what, folks … I think it’s time for a mass impeachment of every damn republican in Congress, for as best I can tell they are every one a bunch of crooks who are determined to further rip apart what little is left of our trust in government.

And on that note, I must stop for tonight for if I don’t take a bit of time to wind down, I’ll lie awake cussing ‘til the sun comes up … if it even bothers.  Have a wonderful Sunday … if you live outside the U.S., that might be possible.

This is my coffee mug, gifted to me one Christmas many years ago by my girls. It suits me to a T.

What Keeps Us Divided …

A Republican and a Democrat are walking down the street when they see a fight between two young black men.  The Democrat walks over, tries to separate the two young men and asks what the problem is, then he tries to get them both to calm down and discuss this reasonably.  The Republican, on the other hand, says, “Let me get my gun!”

A Republican and a Democrat are walking down the street when they see a group of Black Lives Matter protestors holding signs.  The Democrat walks on by, nods to them and gives them a thumbs-up.  The Republican says, “Let me get my gun!”

There are many philosophical and ideological differences between the two major parties in the U.S. – there always have been – but some of the biggest are exemplified in the examples above:  the gun culture, propensity to violence, and racism.

Republican politicos seem to think that appearing in ads with guns, threatening violence, is the way to win votes and influence people.  A few examples …

  • Georgia Governor Brian Kemp was rarely shown in campaign ads without a firearm, including one of him pointing it at his daughter’s boyfriend.  Notice the arsenal behind him in the first picture, and the guns all around the room in the second.kemp-gunkemp-gun-Jake
  • Also in Georgia, Marjorie Taylor Greene is running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Greene is an avid supporter of QAnon, the conspiracy theorist group, and also an avid proponent of assault weapons.  Her campaign ads include pictures of herself holding a gun, and also one of herself in a threatening pose in front of an image of several democratic members of Congress known as ‘the Squad’.     marjory-taylor-greeneMarjorie-Taylor-Greene
  • Madison Cawthorn is a 24-year-old running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives from North Carolina. Madison, partially paralyzed from a car accident 6 years ago, has already been accused of sexual assault by several young women.  He, too, has posted campaign pictures of himself with an assault weapon and enough ammunition to take out a small city.madison_img_2

I am told that this is to make them appear ‘tough’, but in my book it makes them appear to be cowards, for only a coward, a person afraid of something all the time, feels a need to carry a gun.  I’ve managed for 69 years without ever picking up a firearm, have even faced down a gun twice, and still never felt a need to own one.

Another thing that separates the two parties is the attempt to eliminate the opposition in unsavory ways.  I cannot recall a story about someone plotting to kill a republican candidate or official, but the attempts on democrats of late has been astounding.  It seems that republicans are far more in favour of solving their problems with violence than democrats.

Remember Cesar Sayoc who in 2018 sent pipe bombs through the mail to former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, and former Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as well as  Representative Maxine Waters, Senators Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, former Attorney General Eric Holder, two former intelligence chiefs (ex-CIA Director John Brennan and ex-Director of National Intelligence James Clapper), two billionaire Democratic donors and activists (George Soros and Tom Steyer), and actor Robert De Niro, as well as CNN’s world headquarters?  Each of these individuals are democrats — not a single republican.

And just this month the Federal Bureau of Investigation uncovered plots to kill the democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, and to kidnap the democratic governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer.  Funny, but I haven’t heard of any plots to kill Mitch McConnell, or kidnap Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis.

And lastly, let’s talk a bit about racism as it is viewed by the two parties.  According to a 2019 PEW Research study, a majority of Americans (56%) say Trump has made race relations worse; just 15% say he has made progress toward improving race relations, while 13% say he has tried but failed to make progress and 14% say he hasn’t addressed this issue.

Not surprisingly, assessments of Trump’s handling of race relations differ considerably along partisan lines. Democrats overwhelmingly say Trump has made race relations worse (84%), including large shares of black (79%) and white (86%) Democrats. Views are more divided among Republicans. About a third of Republicans (34%) say Trump has improved race relations and 25% say he has tried but failed to make progress; 19% of Republicans say he hasn’t addressed the issue, while only 20% say he has made race relations worse.

But what really shines a light on the differences in the way members of the two parties view race and racism is the acceptance or denial that racism even exists in the U.S.  This chart tells the story …

There are many principles and ideas that divide the two parties, and until we find ways to narrow those divisions, to work together, to understand each other and to find common ground, we cannot begin to heal this nation.  We look to the leadership of the nation, our elected officials, to find that common ground, to stop the hating, the violence, and to ensure that every person in this country has an equal opportunity, that guns are regulated in such a way to ensure the public safety, and that violence is strongly discouraged.  For the past four years, the ‘leader’ of our government has encouraged violence, racism, and the gun culture, and this simply must stop, for we are on the brink of becoming a third-rate nation if it doesn’t.

Think about these things when you go to the polls in nine days.  Think about the sort of country you wish to live in, and how best to achieve that.  Donald Trump claimed he would “make America great again” … well, he has done the exact opposite and made this a far less desirable country to live in than it once was.  Again, I ask only that you think about these things.

Really Snarky Snippets!

snarky-4My last snarky snippets post failed the snark test … not quite snarky enough.  So, you’ll be happy to hear that tonight I am loaded with snark … it is oozing from my pores!  Mondays are rather always like that, though … Trump & Co kick back into high gear after the weekend and give Filosofa much fodder for the gristmill.  So, sit back and be prepared for … S-N-A-R-K (all caps!).

Say ‘Goodbye’, Sue …

Good ol’ Susan Collins is back in the news.  This time, as she has on rare occasions, she found a shred of conscience and called out Trump (very mildly) for his firing of yet another Inspector General, Steve Linick, the latest in his Stalinistic purge.

“I have long been a strong advocate for the Inspectors General. They are vital partners in Congress’s effort to identify inefficient or ineffective government programs and to root out fraud and other wrongdoing.  The investigations and reports of IGs throughout the government help Congress shape legislation and oversight activities – improving government performance, providing important transparency into programs, and giving Americans better value for their tax dollar.  The President has not provided the kind of justification for the removal of IG Linick required by this law.”

Well said, Susan … a day late and dollar short, but thanks for finding your voice and your conscience.  Turns out that in addition to investigating Mike Pompeo for having staff run personal errands such as picking up the dry cleaning, and walking the dogs for Mike and his wife, Linick was also investigating a highly questionable sale of arms to Saudi Arabia in their quest to overtake Yemen and kill as many Yemenis as possible.  Trump’s administration has admitted that he fired Linick as per a request by Pompeo.Senate Judiciary Committee Scrambles After Accusations Against Judge KavanaughMs. Collins is trailing behind her Democratic opponent, Sara Gideon, in the polls by 2.5%.  It’s hard to say whether this will give her a boost or bring her even lower, but it is well past time for Susan Collins to retire.  She has been in the Senate since 1997, twenty-three years, and while she has done some good things, of late she seems to be more of a Trump bootlicker than not.  She was, of course, one of the Republican senators who voted not to convict Trump on the impeachment charges, thereby handing him the keys to the castle, giving him carte blanche to do such things as purge all oversight via the Inspectors General.

Do you know where your tax dollars are going?

It comes with the job … Secret Service protection for the president, his wife, and immediate family members.  Nobody argues with it, for we surely don’t wish to see a member of the president’s family kidnapped or gunned down, but there are limits.  Since Donald Trump took office, those limits seem to have been repeatedly broken, as We the Taxpayers are funding Secret Service protection for Trump’s grown children while they flit about the globe conducting Trump Organization business … nothing to do with the nation or its people … the only beneficiaries carry the surname ‘Trump’.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so take a look at this one …

Yes, my friends … those last three super tall bars represent the number of trips Trump or his family have taken that required protection that WE paid for.  On average, Obama’s family took 133.3 protected trips per year, while the Trump family has taken an average of 1,625 annually. More than twelve times as many!  Much of the Trump family’s known travel has been to promote Trump Organization businesses, which Trump still owns and profits from.  But does he use some of those profits to reimburse the U.S. Treasury for the protection Junior and Eric were afforded?  NO, he does not. Next time somebody tells you that Trump doesn’t take a salary (which is not true, either), remind them that he is spending more money protecting his grotesque sons than the past three presidents combined!  trump-kidsThis, my friends, are what you and I are paying millions of dollars to protect.  WHY???

Oh, the irony!!!

You’ll remember that last week, North Carolina Senator Richard Burr stepped down as Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee because he is under investigation for insider trading, among other things.  Well, of course a replacement had to be chosen … now, before I tell you who it is, remember the name of the committee … the Senate Intelligence Committee.  Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that … wait for it … Senator Marco Rubio would replace Burr!  I nearly choked on my coffee, for when I think of Rubio, ‘intelligence’ is the furthest thing from my mind.

marco-rubioFirst, he is the 17th most conservative republican in Congress, leaving no room for negotiation, no compromise whatsoever.  Second, he is in the pockets of the NRA, and in February 2018, after the Parkland school shooting, he made a virtual ass of himself when he was questioned by a survivor of the shooting about the more than $3 million he had received in donations from the NRA. Rubio replied, “I will always accept the help of anyone who agrees with my agenda.”

He has been dead-set against ACA, is dead-set against women’s rights, immigrant’s rights, and has vacillated on LGBT rights, depending on which side of the coin seemed most popular at the moment.  And, of course his most recent crime in my book came in February of this year, when he refused to stand for justice and instead voted “not guilty” in the Trump impeachment trial.  That one is unforgivable, for look at the consequences.  Intelligence???  I think NOT.

Doctoring the numbers?

The headline in The Washington Post caught my eye …

By order of Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp: The day after Thursday is now Sunday

So naturally, I had to take a quick glance.  Turns out that, eager to prove his decision to be among the first to ‘re-open’ his state, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp played fast and loose with the statistics regarding new cases, hospitalizations and deaths due to coronavirus in his state.  The graph looked real nice … that ‘curve’ the experts keep talking about appeared to represent a steady decline in the new cases and deaths.

But on further investigation … the dates on the chart showed a curious ordering: April 30 was followed by May 4; May 5 was followed by May 2, which was followed by May 7 — which in turn was followed by April 26. The dates had been re-sorted to create the illusion of a decline.  I ask, of nobody in particular, why a governor’s office should be the ones reporting these statistics anyway?  Especially one of the most appallingly corrupt governors in the state’s history!

More importantly, however, is this makes us wonder if ANY statistic we have been given is true, or if the numbers, bad as they are, are being manipulated and hundreds of thousands of new cases, as well as thousands more deaths are being hidden from the public.  I’ve long said that I do not believe a single word that comes out of the Trump administration, and this only confirms what I’ve been saying all along.  Over the past month, I have seen numerous articles positing that the death toll in the U.S. has been under-reported by tens of thousands.  Perhaps even more?  Perhaps we’ve already hit the 200,000 mark, while the statistics say we will hit 100,000 by the end of this week.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could TRUST the government that our hard-earned tax dollars support???

Running While Black?

The most heinous crime I can imagine was committed three months ago in the State of Georgia, where a gun-lovin’ racist, Brian Kemp, is governor. This is the stuff of the mid-1950s, not the 21st century!!! Our friend Jeff is as incensed as I am, and he has written a passionate piece about the brutal slaying of Ahmaud Arbery, a black man gunned down for no reason by a couple of Georgia crackers. Thank you, Jeff. Sigh.

On The Fence Voters

Pissed. Angry. Distraught. Hopeless. Any of these words describe your feelings these days? Personally, I’ve had them all in the last 24 hours. And then I saw a video of a young African-American male gunned down and slaughtered by a couple of yahoo vigilante white dudes. My head exploded.

Another one murdered—this time apparently for having the nerve to jog down the street in the middle of the day. The nerve of this young man, right? How dare he run while black, in a white neighborhood? Doesn’t he know his place?

For those of you wondering what the story is, perhaps you haven’t seen the video yet. Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black man, is seen being chased by two white men in a pickup truck outside the city of Brunswick, Georgia. A confrontation occurs between the younger white man and Arbery, shots were fired, and Arbery is seen falling to…

Snarky Snippets — Where’s The Logic?

I have two or three pieces started … good topics, I think … but too much detritus is crossing my radar for me to find my focus, so … sigh … you know what that means, right?  Yep, it’s time for snarky snippets.  Once I share the angst with you guys, then perhaps I can clear my mind and focus.  It’s worth a shot, anyway.

Is he really trying to kill us all?

When I read yesterday … or was it the day before? … that Trump ordered meat-processing plants to remain open and continue operating, declaring them critical infrastructure, I shook my head.  This is puzzling, for … he is perfectly fine with farmers trashing their entire harvest, plowing their crops back into the ground, throwing billions of gallons of milk away, fruit left rotting on the trees (because he has deported the migrant workers), and yet he orders meat-processing plants to remain open.  Where’s the logic???  Fruits, vegetables, milk, dairy products, etc. are a far more important part of the human diet than meat!  In fact, most people in the U.S., perhaps in all western nations, consume far much more meat than is healthy.

So, what to make of the fact that Trump is happy enough to have healthy foods destroyed, but is determined to shove more meat down our throats?  The only conclusion I can draw is that he wants us all dead, or at least in such a diminished state that we cannot do much.  This theory is supported, also, by his determination to have all businesses up and running again long before it is safe to do so.  He has been warned that to open businesses to the public just now will … not ‘might’, but ‘will’ … result in a resurgence of the coronavirus and that the second wave might be even more lethal than the first.

Trump also said he would also shield meatpacking companies from legal liability from worker claims of not being adequately protected … a gross violation of the law, and one that is going to lead to so many lawsuits that I’m beginning to wish I were a lawyer!

At least 22 plants processing meat from pork to chicken have closed at some point after clusters of employees tested positive for coronavirus.  You remember that old saying, “you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink”?  I think that will apply here.  You can order a plant to remain open, perhaps, but you cannot force employees to return to work.  It is my sincere hope that the employees present a United Front and take up the mantra of Vietnam War protestors in the 1960s, “Hell no, we won’t go!”

Oh, what could possibly go wrong?

I’ve written numerous times about Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, who I consider to be one of the most awful human beings in the country, a man whose campaign ad shows him pointing a rifle at his daughter’s boyfriend!  However, here he is again, back on my radar, and this time I’m … floored at the stupidity.

Kemp announced in his most recent executive order that — provided they meet all other requirements — those holding instructional permits can qualify for their driver’s licenses without the “comprehensive on-the-road driving test.”

That means teens can get their license when they turn 16 without getting in a car with a test administrator.  That means that in the State of Georgia, by this time next year, there will be tens of thousands of teenagers driving cars who have never proven that they were capable of driving the car.  My recommendation is that every person who is involved in a crash with any of these illegitimate drivers must sue Governor Kemp for millions of dollars … it seems that money is the only language these jackasses understand, for human life surely carries no weight with them!  Where’s the logic???

And speaking of the insanity that reigns supreme in the United States today …

On Thursday, New York became the second state to be sued by … wait for it … the National Rifle Association (NRA).  Why?  Because New York decided that gun shops, contrary to what Trump & Co determined, were not essential services and were therefore closed down during the shutdown of non-essential businesses in an effort to protect its citizens.

The NRA is, of course, claiming that shuttering of the gun shops along with schools, restaurants, retail stores, etc., is an infringement on the 2nd Amendment.  They have also found other imaginative ways of turning the coronavirus pandemic to their own advantage … or at least trying to.  On their website, you will find articles titled “COVID-19: Threat to Second Amendment”  and “Pandemic Exposes Dangers of So-Called “Universal” Background Checks”   Seriously???

Let’s talk about this for just a minute.  A gun is manufactured with only one purpose:  to kill.  Hunting rifles and shotguns are used to kill animals, all other guns are used to kill humans.  There is no other purpose … guns do not make pretty decorative planters, nor are they useful for peeling potatoes.  They kill.  That’s all.  So, think about this for a moment … in the midst of a pandemic that is killing thousands per day every day in this country, the NRA believes it is essential that people in this country have unlimited access to buy a gun to … kill.  Isn’t the damn pandemic doing enough killing???  And … libraries are closed, bookstores are closed, music stores are closed … the things that bring us pleasure and enhance our lives are closed, but gun stores must remain open.gun-salesIn other states, where gun shops have remained open, gun sales have soared.  SOARED!  3.7 million background checks were performed in March.  The previous record was 3.3 million in December 2015.  The highest number of guns sold in this country in a single month was this past March, when businesses were first shuttered and the death toll from the coronavirus skyrocketed.  WHAT THE HELL???  Did the gun nuts think they were going to shoot the virus???  Do they think it will break into their homes in the middle of the night and steal the good silver? gun-toonI have never understood and will never understand the gun culture in the United States, but this one just blows my mind … there is absolutely zero logic behind it.  Surely the courts will have the good sense to throw the cases out, or at the very least rule against the NRA.  If not … then I have no more hope for the sane people of this nation.

Two Political Fools …

A crisis of major proportions brings out the best in some people, but it also brings out massive doses of idiocy and foolishness on the part of politicians.  Today there are two such foolish idiots on my radar …

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is back on my radar again.  You may remember a post I did in August 2018 titled Fools Rush In because at that time, he was running for the office of governor in the State of Georgia.  At the very least, you may remember these pictures …

He won the election and is now Governor Kemp.  He’s no less a fool today than he was in August 2018.  Kemp has a plan for re-opening businesses in his state.  Not all businesses, mind you, but as soon as this Friday, the day after tomorrow, he plans to allow gyms, hair salons, bowling alleys and tattoo parlors to reopen.  Think on that one a minute … tattoo parlors???  Hair salons???  Is this seriously where the priorities lie?  Not libraries, but gyms?  Is this what the people of Georgia think is important, or does Mr. Kemp have friends that own such businesses and who have asked him to do them a little favour?

I hope those businesses are shown by the people how very non-essential they are, but it may be the case that some people have got ‘cabin fever’ so bad that they’ll be willing to go have their hair & nails done, get a new tat, and then go for a nice game of bowling with a few friends.  And it may also be the case that Governor Kemp will be on the chopping block when cases of coronavirus skyrocket in his state because he screwed up.

Kemp said that businesses would still be operating under restrictions including monitoring employee health, enhancing sanitation, and separating workers.  But what about the customers, Kemp???  Every customer who walks through the door will be up close and personal with the employees and other customers, and every one might just be carrying the germ.  You can’t tell a tattoo customer to stay six feet away from the tattoo artist, unless the artist has very long arms.  And the woman who’s cutting your hair?  Again, she’d have to have 6-foot-long arms.  Why are these particular businesses considered a priority?  There’s a reason, and the people of Georgia should be asking that question.

Stacey Abrams, who only narrowly lost to Kemp in 2018, and likely would have won in a fair and honest election, was appalled by Kemp’s announcement …

“By trying to push a false opening of the economy, we risk putting more lives in danger.  There is nothing about it that makes sense.”

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms disagrees with Kemp’s decision, but cannot do much about it, however she said she will be urging the people of Atlanta to continue to stay at home.  How many will listen?  It remains to be seen, but my guess is most will not.  I sure would like to be either a psychiatrist or a lawyer when all this is over.

And south of the equator …

Trump & Bolsonaro — two peas in a pod

I have long said that Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and Donald Trump must have some shared DNA, for they are both power-hungry, corrupt, greedy bastards.  And, just as Trump is rallying his base to protest against the continued shut-down of most businesses, prodding them to demand businesses be allowed to re-open far too soon, Bolsonaro is doing much the same.

Last Sunday, as the number of cases and the death toll were on the rise in Brazil, Bolsonaro himself took to the streets to egg on the protestors who were demanding a return to … wait for it … a military dictatorship!

Among the demands their banners listed were an end to the social distancing measures opposed by Bolsonaro, the closure of Brazil’s congress and supreme court, and a re-run of a dictatorship-era decree used by military rulers in the late 1960s to suffocate their political opponents.

After mingling with the masses, Bolsonaro climbed into the bed of a truck and gave a little speech, while coughing numerous times … apparently done for effect …

“The era of roguery is over. Now it’s the people who are in power.  Everyone in Brazil must understand that they must yield to the will of the Brazilian people.”

bolsonaro-1bolsonaro-2Former president Fernando Henrique Cardoso tweeted …

“Deplorable for the president to join anti-democratic protests. It’s time to unite around the constitution against all threats to democracy.”

Another former president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said …

“The same constitution that allows a president to be democratically elected also contains devices to stop them leading the country to the destruction of democracy and a genocide of the population.”

Eduardo Paes, Rio de Janeiro’s former mayor said …

“There have always been morons going around ranting against democracy … Generally they’re minorities whose tickles you don’t even feel. But it’s something quite different when it’s the president – a democratically elected one – joining this kind of movement. There’s no way to remain quiet and not repudiate this.”

Like Trump, Bolsonaro has attempted to downplay the pandemic, calling it media hysteria.  Last week Bolsonaro fired his popular health minister, Luiz Henrique Mandetta, who had clashed with him for undermining health ministry recommendations designed to protect Brazilian lives.  Sound familiar?  If someone doesn’t agree with you, fire ‘em.  And these are world ‘leaders’??????????

Often I refer to a quote by the cartoon character of yore, Pogo, and this seems an appropriate time to repeat it …

On Stripping The Rights Of Women …

Today I’m going to touch on a subject that is controversial, to say the least:  abortion.

A number of states, the most recent being Alabama, have recently passed highly restrictive and misogynistic abortion laws.  Anti-abortion evangelicals are patting themselves on the backs thinking, no doubt, that they have once again proven themselves the rulers over women’s bodies.  But make no mistake … these laws are only a tool.  The legislators and governors who have passed these laws are well aware that they don’t hold water, for when there is a conflict between federal and state law, federal law trumps state laws, no pun intended.

The federal law on abortion was established in 1973 with the U.S. Supreme Court decision in the case of Roe v Wade in which the Court ruled that the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides a fundamental “right to privacy” that protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose whether or not to have an abortion.  It is not within the rights of the State of Alabama or the State of Georgia to change, ignore, or override that ruling.  Period.

So … why are they passing these ‘illegal laws’, you might ask.  Because … long story short, they are hoping for a lawsuit against them that will reach the Supreme Court.  And when it does, they are hoping, believing, that the Supreme Court will then use that lawsuit as a basis to overturn Roe v Wade.

One of Donald Trump’s campaign promises that gained him a large number of followers was that he would put justices on the Supreme Court that would overturn Roe v Wade.  It is an emotional issue that gained him the support of the evangelicals.  However, the Supreme Court cannot simply say, “Let’s overturn a decades-old decision because the president would like us to.”  A case must come before them that challenges that decision before they can take it under advisement.

You might notice that the states did not pass these dranconian abortion laws when President Barack Obama was in office and the Supreme Court was still largely apolitical.  You’ll also notice that Trump was in such a hurry to appoint a second justice to the Court that he had a quiet little talk with Justice Kennedy, and shortly thereafter Justice Kennedy announced his imminent retirement.  And you’ll further notice that there was a mad dash by Trump and his boot-licking Senate to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, thereby giving the court a 5-4 right-wing, conservative majority, despite the fact that the Court is intended to be apolitical.

The stage is set … now the states who have passed these anti-abortion laws that rob women of their rights to have control over their own bodies will sit back and wait for the inevitable lawsuits claiming, rightly, that the states have no right to restrict a woman’s right of choice.  Then will begin the inevitable back and forth through the courts until sometime next year, perhaps even sooner, the cases will reach the U.S. Supreme Court.

Trump is relying on the five conservative justices to vote in favour of overturning Roe v Wade.  Those justices are:

  • Clarence Thomas
  • Samuel Alito
  • John Roberts (Chief Justice)
  • Neil Gorsuch
  • Brett Kavanuagh

Justice Steven Breyer warned in a dissent to another decision earlier this week …

“Overruling a case always requires special justification. I understand that, because opportunities to correct old errors are rare, judges may be tempted to seize every opportunity to overrule cases they believe to have been wrongly decided. But the law can retain the necessary stability only if this court resists that temptation, overruling prior precedent only when the circumstances demand it.”

The Alabama bill, which has been passed by the state legislature and is expected to be signed into ‘law’ by Governor Kay Ivey, bans abortions at every stage of pregnancy and criminalizes the procedure for doctors, who could be charged with felonies and face up to 99 years in prison.  The Georgia bill, recently passed and signed by Governor Brian Kemp (remember him … the guy with the gun pointed at his daughter’s boyfriend?), is only slightly less restrictive, banning abortion after about 6 weeks, often before a woman even realizes she is pregnant.

Those who are so dead-set against a woman’s right of choice, call themselves “pro-life”, but this is a misnomer, as I have noted before.  They are often the same people who support the death penalty.  They are often the people who protest their tax dollars going to help feed and clothe the poor.  Many are the same ones who fought so hard against ACA, which provided affordable healthcare to those who would not otherwise have any.  Pro-life?  No, only anti-women’s rights.

If people are so against abortion, doesn’t it make sense to support such things as birth control, family planning and counseling, and other measures to prevent unwanted pregnancies?  But no, the evangelicals are against all of those, too.  They support de-funding such organizations as Planned Parenthood who help with all women’s health issues, and they argue against company-sponsored health insurance plans covering birth control.  Sorry, folks, you cannot have it both ways!

Thus far through the years, state laws attempting to restrict abortion have all been struck down by the Supreme Court as being unconstitutional.  Will that precedent hold?  I cannot say for sure, but I’m less confident now than I would have been two years ago.  More than 60% of the people in this nation support a woman’s right of choice, but these days it seems that the minority is the only voice that is heard.  If the Supreme Court ultimately overturns Roe v Wade, it will be a slap in the face to every woman in the U.S.  What will be next?  Will they take away our right to own property?  Our right to vote?  Think about it.

They Walk Among Us …

I stopped doing my Idiot of the Week feature around the end of 2017, for a few reasons.  It was fun, but rather irrelevant.  There were so many idiots that it was difficult to keep up.  And a few people felt it was in poor taste, an insult to idiots everywhere.  But I have to say that looking at the news every day, I’m thinking about starting it back up!  They are everywhere you turn!  Three in particular stand out today, and if I were still doing the IotW feature, these would be the first three I would choose.

Da Godfather wannabe?Matt-GaetzIt really does seem that Representative Matt Gaetz from Florida has a problem.  I wrote about him just a few weeks ago (February 7th) for making an utter fool of himself at a House Judiciary Committee meeting on gun regulation whereby he piped up and said we need to build a wall.  This left most of us scratching our heads.  And now, he has opened himself to an investigation by the Florida State Bar Association.  Is he begging for an Idiot of the Week award or what???

What did he do this time, you ask?  He tweeted the following to Michael Cohen on the day before Mr. Cohen was scheduled to begin his testimony before Congress …

“Hey @MichaelCohen212 — Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends?  Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she’ll remain faithful when you’re in prison. She’s about to learn a lot.”

I’m beginning to think Mr. Gaetz works for Don Corleone!  Sounds like “tough mob” talk, except from an amateur.  His excuse was … wait for it … he was “witness testing”.  Where I come from, it is called witness intimidation and witness tampering, both of which are quite illegal.  But then, as I wrote earlier this month, Mr. Gaetz has, like his hero in the White House, never been particularly a fan of the law and follows it only when it suits him, hence the picture on the right (above) in prison orange!

Wah wah wah …

kellyanneIf Kellyanne whines as much at home as she does in the media, it’s a thousand wonders that George (Conway) hasn’t sent her packing already.  All she ever does, it seems, is complain and point her knobby finger of blame … most always toward people who have a bit of good sense.

“There’s no question the Republican House failed, and they failed us in securing the border, but they also failed to make good on the promise to him that we would get that money for the wall They completely lied about that.”

Can’t you just hear that nasal whine in her voice?

No, Kellyanne, the republicans who did not support the building of Trump’s ego-wall, finally realized that for once they better listen to the people of this nation.  The people of this nation … at least the large majority of the people in this nation, do not want a stupid wall on the southern border that would be inhumane and also interfere greatly with the economies of the border states.  You, madam, need to study a bit and learn some facts before opening that mouth of yours!  Ask your husband … he can enlighten you!

From bad to worse …

Earlier this week, in light of election fraud committed by a member of Mark Harris’ campaign staff who went about the ninth district of North Carolina collecting people’s absentee ballots, destroying the ones that weren’t for Mr. Harris, Mark Harris removed himself from the upcoming repeat election.  At first, I was pleased by this, but then I started wondering who would replace him as the republican candidate.

Remember Georgia’s own idiot, Brian Kemp, who liked posing for campaign ads with a gun, and in one case with a rifle pointed at his daughter’s boyfriend?  Well … I guess that in the South, every state, by law, must have at least one such idiot!

Meet Mr. Stony Rushing, the new republican candidate replacing Mark Harris …Stony-Rushing

Mr. Rushing is, as you might guess from the above campaign poster from when he was running for Country Commissioner, yet another gun nut.  Even better, he has fashioned himself after Boss Hogg from that ol’ television show, The Dukes of Hazzard!

See the resemblance?  Note the white costume and the cigar?

Rushing owns a gun store and shooting range, and is an advocate for keeping the Confederate flag flying.  It is likely that ol’ Stony will have to share the stage with at least two other republican candidates, and let us hope that at least one of them is sane!  Think about it … this guy could be sitting in the House of Representatives on Capitol Hill in just a month or two!  {shudder}

Where do all these people come from? I’m not sure, but there is one common denominator, in case you haven’t picked up on it yet – they are all members of the Republican Party. Need I say more?

Election Night Observations …

I wasn’t sure what I could write tonight for my morning post, for the election is really the only thing on anyone’s mind, and the results won’t likely all be in by the time I need to have this post finished.  Watching the election results has been much like watching a ping-pong game, but knowing that the stakes were quite nearly a matter of life and death … the life or death of a nation.  But here, at the end of the day, I have decided to go with a couple of observations … probably snarky observations, given my current mood.

georgiaThe Georgia election is a sham and should be declared null and void.  Never in my life have I seen so much blatant corruption in one single state in a single election.  Brian Kemp should be on his way to the federal penitentiary for his tricks to suppress the vote, but instead he is likely on his way to the governor’s mansion in Atlanta.  While running for governor in this election, he was serving as Georgia’s Secretary of State, and thereby overseeing this farce of an election!  Talk about putting the fox in charge of the henhouse!

So, under Mr. Kemp’s watchful eye …

  • Some 390 absentee ballots were thrown out in Gwinnett Country alone … a county that is largely comprised of African-Americans, Latinos and Asians. Thrown away!
  • Approximately 53,000 voter registrations were “placed on hold” for minor discrepancies between the registration and other form of voter I.D. such as a driver’s license or passport. The discrepancies were as minor as a missing hypen in a hyphenated name, or one letter off in the name of a street address.  Kemp insisted on every registration being an “exact match”.  Even an extra space was enough to disqualify the registrations.
  • There was the bus filled with about 40 African-American senior citizens being taken to the polls for early voting, but when they arrived, a county clerk forbade the elderly people from getting off the bus.
  • An African-American city commissioner who spent the day driving citizens to the polls one day during early voting, was arrested twice in one day on trumped-up charges.
  • On Sunday, with absolutely no evidence to support the claim, Kemp claimed there were hacking attempts and ordered an investigation … two days prior to the election and with zero evidence.
  • Yesterday morning, the lines to vote in Fulton County, Georgia, were long and the average wait time was three hours. Why?  Because somebody mistakenly sent only three voting machines to the polling place, when many more were required.  Fulton County covers a large portion of Atlanta.  Many voters left … you know how it is … they had jobs and had to get to work!  The idiot responsible for the mistake apologized.    Gee.
  • And back in Gwinnett County, where 60% of voters are minorities, somebody forgot to bring power cords for the machines, so once the batteries died, the voting machines were … dead. The lines stretched, people left to go to work, and there was a 4.5 hour-long wait for most voters.  Mostly African-American voters, that is.  Are you starting to see a pattern here?

There has been no integrity in the Georgia election for governor and I personally am declaring it null and void.  My solution is to send every single registered voter an absentee ballot and allow them 10 days to fill out the ballot and return it.  This process and the counting of the ballots should be overseen by either the Georgia Supreme Court, or else members of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).  Nothing less is acceptable.

Stacy AbramsThe candidate challenging Brian Kemp is Stacy Abrams, an African-American woman.  In addition to all the above shenanigans, she has had to put up with lies, lies, and more lies told by none other than Donald Trump.  Trump has claimed that Abrams plans to “get rid of” the second amendment (false) and also that she would turn the entire state of Georgia into a giant sanctuary city (both false and irrelevant).  Now, to those of us with a working brain, these are blatantly made up rumours by the ‘man’ who calls himself a president, but how many of the under-educated white people in Georgia believed him and cast a vote for the bigoted Brian Kemp?  Another blow against election integrity in the state of Georgia.

My second observation is that I think we need some rules here.  Why is the so-called president of this nation allowed to put his two-cents’ worth in?  The U.S. Congress is one of three branches of the United States government, and per the U.S. Constitution, is intended to be entirely independent of the executive branch and is supposed to serve as a check on the power of the presidency.  Isn’t that independence lost when the president is actively and avidly campaigning for specific candidates, those of his own party?  Isn’t this a matter of carrying partisan politics too far?  Donald Trump has not likely spent a full hour doing his job — the one we pay him to do — for the past two months, for all he has done is attend rallies on behalf of republican candidates where he spoke ignominious lies about the democratic challengers. voting toonElection reform is needed, for this has been a year of dirty pool all the way around, in the congressional races and governor races alike.  Can we not at least require honesty, if not integrity, from our candidates?  We have blatant white supremacists running, people who are affiliated with hate groups, and yet we have a president who is championing these abominable people.  Is this civil?  Is it even sane?  Is it fair?  Is it just?  The answer to all of these questions is that no, it is not.  The 2018 mid-terms, no matter the outcome, has been the dirtiest, most unfair, nastiest election in the history of this nation and it has left me with a terrible taste in my mouth, pain in my heart, and a feeling of deep shame for the country I once respected.

One result made me happy … the defeat of Mr. Voter Fraud, Kris Kobach by Laura Kelly for the Kansas governor’s race … Kobach is a Trump clone, filled with lies and dark toxins.

On the downside, I was deeply saddened by two losses in particular … Andrew Gillum in the Florida governor’s race, and Beto O’Rourke for the Senate seat held by Ted Cruz.  Both of these men would have been valuable additions to our government and both were defeated by two of the most corrupt the GOP has to offer.  As of this writing, there is still hope, albeit slim, for Stacy Abrams in Georgia, despite all of Kemps unconscionable manipulations.

And as I close up shop for tonight and head up to bed for a bit of shut-eye, it appears that the democrats have gained a majority in the House of Representatives!!!clip-art-wooo-clipart-4.jpg
