♫ Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now ♫

This is a redux from 2020.  White Rabbit is my favourite Jefferson Airplane song, but this one runs a close second, and it is a fun video!

This evening, this song was going through my head, but I couldn’t remember the name of the group who did it.  Well … no damn wonder!  They’ve had three different names in my lifetime.  I’m old … it’s all I can do to keep up with one name, let alone three!  They started out as Jefferson Airplane, then switched to Jefferson Starship, and then just plain ol’ Starship.  Sheesh.  🙄

This song was co-written by Albert Hammond and Diane Warren, and recorded by Starship, as they were then calling themselves, in 1986.  Albert Hammond said that the idea for the song came from his impending marriage to his live-in girlfriend of seven years, after his divorce from his previous wife was finalized. He had said to Diane Warren, “It’s almost like they’ve stopped me from marrying this woman for seven years, and they haven’t succeeded. They’re not gonna stop me doing it.”

This was the third #1 single for Starship (after We Built This City and Sara), but the only members of the group who actually participated in the recording of the song were vocalist Grace Slick and Mickey Thomas, and guitarist Craig Chaquico. Producer Narada Michael Walden preferred to use his veteran session players to round out the instrumental backing, and he programmed the LinnDrum himself.

The song hit #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 on April 4, 1987 and reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart for four weeks the following month and became the UK’s second-biggest-selling single of 1987. The song also reached the top 10 in six European countries. It became the first number one single by songwriter Diane Warren.

Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now
Starship

Looking in your eyes I see a paradise
This world that I’ve found is too good to be true
Standing here beside you, want so much to give you
This love in my heart that I’m feeling for you

Let ’em say we’re crazy, I don’t care about that
Put your hand in my hand baby don’t ever look back
Let the world around us just fall apart
Baby we can make it if we’re heart to heart

And we can build this thing together
Standing strong forever
Nothing’s gonna stop us now
And if this world runs out of lovers
We’ll still have each other
Nothing’s gonna stop us
Nothing’s gonna stop us now

I’m so glad I found you, I’m not gonna lose you
Whatever it takes I will stay here with you
Take it to the good times, see it through the bad times
Whatever it takes here’s what I’m gonna do

Let ’em say we’re crazy, what do they know
Put your arms around me baby don’t ever let go
Let the world around us just fall apart
Baby we can make it if we’re heart to heart

And we can build this thing together
Standing strong forever
Nothing’s gonna stop us now
And if this world runs out of lovers
We’ll still have each other
Nothing’s gonna stop us
Nothing’s gonna stop us

Oh, all that I need is you
All that I ever need
And all that I want to do
Is hold you forever, and ever and ever
Hey!

And we can build this thing together
Standing strong forever
Nothing’s gonna stop us now
And if this world runs out of lovers
We’ll still have each other
Nothing’s gonna stop us
Nothing’s gonna stop us now
And we can build this thing together
Standing strong forever
Nothing’s gonna stop us now
Nothing’s gonna stop us now
And if this world runs out of lovers
We’ll still have each other
Nothing’s gonna stop us now
And we can build this thing together
Standing strong forever
Nothing’s gonna stop us now
Nothing’s gonna stop us
And if this world runs out of lovers
We’ll still have each other
Nothing’s gonna stop us
Nothing’s gonna stop us now, yeah

♫ Rhythm Of The Night ♫ (Redux)

I nearly forgot to do a music post tonight, and just as I was thinking that perhaps I could get in bed an hour early, maybe by 2:00 a.m., I realized why I thought I had extra time … I forgot the music post!  I’m a bit frustrated on this, the fourth day of the new year, and so I went in search of a song with no deep meanings, just a bit of uplifting fun.  And thus it happens that I am reduxing this one that I last played back in 2019!  Relax, let your toes tap mindlessly for a bit …

This was the first of songwriter Diane Warren’s many Top 10 hits that she wrote entirely herself, and was the biggest hit for the family group DeBarge.

By 1985, DeBarge had become pop/R&B sensations with mostly ballads making the repertoire of their hit catalog though they were as impressive as live performers with their mixture of their trademark soft ballads and a collection of dance material. Motown Records sought to produce DeBarge with a dance single to give them a bigger crossover success that mirrored that of label-mate Lionel Richie, who like DeBarge, had created his initial fan base on soft songs before the release of All Night Long, which included a catchy dance beat influenced by calypso. A similar influence would come in the production of Rhythm of the Night which featured more of El DeBarge’s deep tenor with flashes of his trademark falsetto. Richard Perry, the hit producer behind hit recordings for The Pointer Sisters, Harry Nilsson, and Carly Simon, among others, was appointed to produce the single with Diane Warren as its writer.

Rhythm of the Night
DeBarge

When it feels like the world is on your shoulders
And all of the madness has got you going crazy
It’s time to get out step out into the street
Where all of the action is right there at your feet

Well I know a place where we can dance the whole night away
Underneath electric stars
Just come with me and we can shake your blues right away
You’ll be doing fine once the music starts

Oh, to the beat of the rhythm of the night
Dance until the morning light
Forget about the worries on your mind
You can leave them all behind
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
Oh the rhythm of the night, oh yeah

Look out on the street now the party’s just beginning
The music’s playing a celebration’s starting
Under the street lights the scene is being set
A night for romance a night you won’t forget

So come join the fun this ain’t no time to be staying home
Oh there’s too much going on
Tonight is gonna be a night like you’ve never known
We’re gonna have a good time the whole night long

Oh, to the beat of the rhythm of the night
Dance until the morning light
Forget about the worries on your mind
You can leave them all behind
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
Oh the rhythm of the night, oh

Come join the fun this ain’t no time to be staying home
Ooh there’s too much going on, oh
Tonight is gonna be a night like you’ve never known
We’re gonna have a good time the whole night long, oh

To the beat of the rhythm of the night
Dance until the morning light
Forget about the worries on your mind
You can leave them all behind

To the beat of the rhythm of the night
Dance until the morning light
Forget about the worries on your mind

Oh, to the beat of the rhythm of the night
Forget about the worries on your mind
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
Forget about the worries on your mind
La la la la, la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la
The music’s playin’, it’s a celebration
The music’s playin’, everybody dance
To the beat of the rhythm of the night
Forget about the worries on your mind (you can leave them all behind)
To the beat of the rhythm of the night (dance until the morning light)
Forget about the worries on your mind (you can leave them all behind)
To the beat of the rhythm of the night (oh, oh, oh, oh)

♫ If I Could Turn Back Time ♫

I was at a loss for a song tonight, unless you count the Osmond Brothers earworm that our friend Keith planted earlier this evening!  So, it being after 3:00 a.m., and me having planned to go to bed no later than 1:30, I did a quick skip through my archives and found this one by Cher that I have only played once back in December 2019.  You guys liked it then, so hopefully you can like it again today!

This song, released in 1989, was written by Diane Warren, one of the most prolific songwriters of our time, having written songs for Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand, Tina Turner and Whitney Houston.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter magazine, Diane Warren said Cher hated the song and she had to force her to sing it.

“I held her leg down during a session and said, ‘You have to record it!’

According to Warren, Cher’s response was

“F— you, bitch! You’re hurting my leg! OK, I’ll try it.”

However, once Cher had recorded the tune …

“She gave me this look like, ‘You were right.'”

The following video was filmed on board the USS Missouri while it was stationed at the former Long Beach Naval Shipyard at Pier D along with the crew. The Department of the Navy had granted permission for the music video shoot because of its potential for boosting Navy recruitment: the Navy did not have a budget for TV ads in 1989. Cher recalled to Q magazine: December 2013:

“The ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’ video we shot for days. There was a whole story – I climbed up stuff, I was running away from a lover. I was in a cage, in a speedboat… And when the director got to the edit, he just said, ‘F this, here’s the money (shot)’ – me on the battleship with the sailors. They were real sailors too. They were funny. They kept calling me ‘ma’am.'”

Cher’s outfit for the original video, a fishnet body stocking under a black one-piece bathing suit that left most of her buttocks (and a tattoo of a butterfly) exposed, proved very controversial, and many television networks refused to show the video. MTV first banned the video, and later played it only after 9 PM. A second version of the video was made, including new scenes and less overtly sexual content than the original. The outfit and risque nature of the video were a complete surprise to the Navy, who expected Cher to wear a jumpsuit for the concert, as presented on storyboards during original discussions with producers. The sailors were already in place and the band had begun playing when Cher emerged in her outfit.  Personally, this is just one more example of why people should have been born with fur instead of bare skin!

Highly successful around the globe, If I Could Turn Back Time was seen as a major comeback for Cher in the late 1980s. It charted at number one in Australia and Norway, as well as reaching number three in the United States and number six in the United Kingdom.

If I Could Turn Back Time
Cher

If I could turn back time
If I could find a way
I’d take back those words that hurt you
And you’d stay
I don’t know why I did the things I did
I don’t know why I said the things I said
Love’s like a knife it can cut deep inside
Words are like weapons, they wound sometimes
I didn’t really mean to hurt you
I didn’t want to see you go
I know I made you cry, but baby

If I could turn back time
If I could find a way
I’d take back those words that hurt you
And you’d stay
If I could reach the stars
I’d give ’em all to you
Then you’d love me, love me, like you used to do
If I could turn back time

My world was shattered I was torn apart
Like someone took a knife and drove it
Deep in my heart
You walk out that door I swore that I didn’t care
But I lost everything darling then and there
Too strong to tell you I was sorry
Too proud to tell you I was wrong
I know that I was blind, and darling

If I could turn back time
If I could find a way
I’d take back those words that hurt you
And you’d stay
If I could reach the stars
I’d give ’em all to you
Then you’d love me, love me, like you used to do, oh

If I could turn back time (If I could turn back time)
If I could turn back time (If I could turn back time)
If I could turn back time, oh baby

I didn’t really mean to hurt you
I didn’t want to see you go
I know I made you cry

If I could turn back time
If I could find a way
I’d take back those words that hurt you
If I could reach the stars
I’d give ’em all to you
Then you’d love me, love me, like you used to do

If I could turn back time (turn back time)
If I could find a way (find a way)
Then maybe maybe maybe you’d stay

♫ If I Could Turn Back Time ♫

I have no idea why this song has been in my head all day long.  All. Day. Long.  Perhaps it has something to do with the approaching new year/decade?  Or, perhaps I’m feeling guilty about one of the many things I have failed to do lately?  Who knows … I don’t even understand how that bouncy thing inside my head works.

This song, released in 1989, was written by Diane Warren, one of the most prolific songwriters of our time, having written songs for Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand, Tina Turner and Whitney Houston.

♫ I’m Getting Used To You ♫

Last month I made a promise … and I broke it.  I rarely give promises, unless I am 99% certain that I can keep them.  And I could have kept this one … even made a note to do so … but, I forgot.  I could make some excuses, but instead I will simply say “I’m sorry” and try to make up for my perfidy.

Yesterday, April 16th, would have been the 48th birthday of Tejano singer, Selena (just for the record, that is pronounced Say-Lay-Nah).  Sadly, on 31 March 1995, Selena was brutally murdered by Yolanda Saldívar, a woman Selena had long considered a friend.  I won’t share the details here, but if you’re interested, Wikipedia has a fairly comprehensive summation of the events leading up to the murder.  For today, though, even though I am a day late, let’s focus on her life and her music, shall we?

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez  was her full name, though she went by simply ‘Selena’.  She was a singer, songwriter, spokesperson, model, actress, and fashion designer. Called the Queen of Tejano music, her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century.

Billboard magazine named her the top-selling Latin artist of the 1990s decade, while her posthumous collaboration with MAC cosmetics became the best-selling celebrity collection in cosmetics history. Media outlets called her the “Tejano Madonna” for her clothing choices. She also ranks among the most influential Latin artists of all time and is credited for catapulting a music genre into the mainstream market.

Tonight, in honour of what would have marked her 48th birthday, I play for you I’m Getting Used To You.  Though left to my own devices I might have selected one of her Spanish pieces, our friend Ellen, the person to whom I owe apologies for a promise broken, rather indicated that she likes this one, and it is a beautiful song … sung by a beautiful woman.

I’m Getting Used to You
Selena

Wasn’t like me to fall in love
That’s just the way that I was
But now when I feel you holding me
Something inside just tells me you’ve gotten to
This heart of mine
And now I know it’s true ’cause darling I’m
Darlin’ I’m starting to find

I’m getting used to you
Ooh and I’m loving every single thing about you
I’m getting used to you
And I could never get used to living without you

Didn’t think that a love could mean that much
But you sure changed my mind with your touch
Never knew that my heart could need you so
Now I know that these arms can’t let you go
No they wouldn’t even try
‘Cause I’m sure that you’re the one that I
Oh one that I need in my life

I’m getting used to you
Ooh and I’m loving every single thing about you
I’m getting used to you
And I could never get used to living without you

Ohh [Repeat x3]

You’ve gotten to this heart of mine
And I know its true ’cause darlin’ I
Oh darlin’ I’m starting to find
You’re the one I need in my life

I’m getting used to you
Ooh and I’m loving every single thing about you
I’m getting used to you
And I could never get used to living without you
Ain’t no living without loving you

♫ Because You Loved Me ♫

Released in 1996, Because You Loved Me was written by Diane Warren and produced by David Foster, and served as the theme song from the 1996 film Up Close and Personal, starring Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer.

The song became a worldwide hit, reaching number one in the United States, Canada and Australia, and reaching top ten in many other countries.  It was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award and won a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.

Because You Loved Me
Celine Dion

For all those times you stood by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
I’ll be forever thankful baby
You’re the one who held me up
Never let me fall
You’re the one who saw me through through it all

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’cause you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved me

You gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall
I had your love I had it all
I’m grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don’t know that much
But I know this much is true
I was blessed because I was loved by you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’cause you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved me

You were always there for me
The tender wind that carried me
A light in the dark shining your love into my life
You’ve been my inspiration
Through the lies you were the truth
My world is a better place because of you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’cause you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved me

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’cause you believed

♫ Un-Break My Heart ♫

I’ve mentioned before that I am partly deaf … and thus I get most song lyrics totally wrong until I look them up online.  For many years, I thought this song was “Come Break My Heart”, until one day my daughter happened to hear me singing it and corrected my misguided notion.  I always wondered why somebody would ask for their heart to be broken. 🙄

Diane Warren wrote Un-Break My Heart in 1995. When asked about her songwriting process, she said that songs usually come to her from a title, a chorus, or a drum beat. Un-Break My Heart was conceived from its title, and, according to Warren, “it popped into my head, and I thought, ‘I don’t think I’ve heard that before, that’s kind of interesting.’ I started playing around on the piano with these chords and did a key change, and then I knew, ‘OK, this is magic.'” Warren further explained that she wrote Un-Break My Heart as a ballad and dance song, because that was the way she heard it.

When Un-Break My Heart was sent to Tony Braxton, she expressed dislike for the song. According to Warren, “Toni hated the song. She didn’t want to do it.” L.A. Reid, president of Arista Records, was able to convince Braxton to record it, and it later became her signature song.

Spin journalist Charles Aaron positively reviewed the song and joked: “this exquisitely crafted, heart-pumping l-u-v song has been droning in the produce department of my grocery store for about a year now, but I’d just like to go on record as saying that if it ever stops, I’ll really be heartbroken.”

Un-Break My Heart
Toni Braxton

Don’t leave me in all this pain
Don’t leave me out in the rain
Come back and bring back my smile
Come and take these tears away
I need your arms to hold me now
The nights are so unkind
Bring back those nights when I held you beside me

Un-break my heart
Say you’ll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many nights
Un-break my heart
My heart

Take back that sad word goodbye
Bring back the joy to my life
Don’t leave me here with these tears
Come and kiss this pain away
I can’t forget the day you left
Time is so unkind
And life is so cruel without you here beside me

Un-break my heart
Say you’ll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many nights
Un-break my heart
My heart

Don’t leave me in all this pain
Don’t leave me out in the rain
Bring back the nights when I held you beside me

Un-break my heart
Say you’ll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many nights
Un-break my
Un-break my heart, oh baby
Come back and say you love me
Un-break my heart, sweet darlin’
Without you I just can’t go on
Can’t go on
