Filosofa’s Philosophical Nuggets

Today I’m offloading some of the bits ‘n pieces, jumbled thoughts about anything or nothing, that are clogging up my mental lines.  Take them with a grain of salt, or for whatever they’re worth, for they are just snippets I jot down when I need to get a thought out of my head so I can focus.

  • What does it take to truly outrage Americans? Short answer:  You can’t.  If killing their children doesn’t earn any sustained outrage, then they are blind, deaf, dumb and numb to the gun culture and incapable of caring.  If Uvalde, Parkland, Sandy Hook and other school shootings haven’t managed to capture their attention for more than a 3-day news cycle, then nothing will.  They sit around and pray to whatever deity they find comfort in that their own children will be spared, rather than actually demanding action on the part of the lawmakers they elected and whose salaries they pay.

  • Justices Thomas, Barrett, Kavanaugh, Gorsuch, Alito and to a lesser degree Roberts have ensured that we can no longer trust the U.S. Supreme Court to ‘do the right thing’ in handing down justice. The Republicans in Congress have guaranteed us that the law works in favour of only the wealthy and the uber-religious.  Police forces around the nation have shown us that they ‘protect and serve’ the white portion of the population at the expense of all others.  They tell us to ‘trust’, but just who are we to trust?  Who has earned our trust?

  • If you need a church, synagogue, mosque or temple, if you need a bible, quran, or talmud, if you need a rabbi, priest, or minister to tell you what the right thing is to do, then I would suggest you are not listening to your own conscience. I think we ALL know right from wrong, but some people will allow religion to silence or override the voice of reason from within.

  • My granddaughter, Natasha, and I often have conversations about events happening near and far, and her voice is always refreshingly astute. I don’t remember the topic we were discussing when she uttered these words, but I found them spot-on!
    • “If you don’t want to be insulted when you’re dead, don’t be a piece of garbage while you’re alive.”

  • Ever wonder how people across the pond view our antics? This is a comment from a UK reader on one of Robert Reich’s recent posts:

    • “I am just utterly staggered and confounded by how those in the House and in Congress are prepared to abandon all normal rules and, it would appear, your constitution, to support this liar, fraud and sexual predator. It is also, I fear, a very sad reflection on the educational and intelligence levels of so many in the USA that they are also prepared to vote for this man, to support people who at least purport to believe in QAnon and to see nothing wrong with all the attempts to deny large numbers of people their basic human rights. However, anybody who finds a small group of cells to be vastly more important than the child that it might grow into or the woman whose body is required to support it, has to be verging on insane in my book. It’s just a shame that so many of your population appear to fall into that category.”

  • The people of the United States have become so ideologically divided that we’ve made it easy for politicians at all levels to prey on us, to use us as pawns in their games where the prize is wealth and power. Quite honestly, I do not see how we can become any more divided, but then I’ve said that before.  Some predict a civil war in this country, but … there are only ideological boundaries, not physical or geographical ones.  It is We the People who are the problem, not the politicians who are opportunists and not missing a chance to use our divisions to their own advantage.

  • What’s in your checking account right now … no, just go check, don’t project or extrapolate … the dollar or pound amount right this minute? Now … I want you to just think about this … what if you donated half of that amount right now, right this minute.  Would you have to default on the rent/mortgage?  Would you and your family have to go without food tomorrow or next week?

  • Does this statement make any sense to you?
    • “To save free speech on college campuses, Republican lawmakers and governors say it’s time to stop talking about diversity, equity and inclusion.”
      • WHOSE free speech??? Confusing, to say the very least.  Seems to me they are saying that to save free speech, we need to kill it.

Well, I feel much better now!  The cobwebs are clearing and I think I might be able to find a focus soon!  Thanks for putting up with my jumbled collection of thoughts, for helping me sweep a few of the cobwebs from the corners of my mind!

Marina Ovsyannikova — Say Her Name!

The first I heard of Marina Ovsyannikova was in a post by our friend, rawgod.  My curiosity piqued, I went in search of more information.  In the world of courageous people, Ms. Ovsyannikova stands out, is at the top of my list.  What did she do?

She was an editor/producer at Russia’s state television Channel One.  Yesterday evening, in the midst of the nightly live news (propaganda) program, she burst onto the set behind the news anchor yelling, “Stop the war. No to war” and carrying a sign …

Translated, the sign reads, “Don’t believe the propaganda. They’re lying to you here.” It was signed in English: “Russians against the war.” The news anchor continued to read from her teleprompter speaking louder in an attempt to drown out Ovsyannikova, but her protest could be seen and heard for several seconds before the channel switched to a recorded segment.

Ovsyannikova also released a pre-recorded video via the OVD-Info human rights group in which she expressed her shame at working for Channel One and spreading Kremlin propaganda.

Ovsyannikova was arrested shortly after her protest and was held for a time at the Ostankino television center before being taken to the police station.  This is the first time that an employee from Russian state media has publicly denounced the war as the country continues its crackdown on anti-war dissent. So strict is the current wave of censorship that other news programs blurred out the message on Ovsyannikova’s sign in their own reports on the incident.  Within hours of her protest, more than 40,000 people had so far left comments on Ovsyannikova’s Facebook page, with many praising her for her taking a stand.  Tell me again how the Russian people love Putin and fully support the war on Ukraine???

What has become of Ms. Ovsyannikova since yesterday evening?  I’ve read conflicting stories.  One says that after being interrogated for some 14 hours, she was fined approximately 30,000 rubles, or roughly $280 USD and released from prison.  But The Washington Post reports that human rights groups say they are unable to locate her.  I suspect there can be no good outcome for Ms. Ovsyannikova from her protest, but I am sure she knew that when she made the decision to do what she did, to stand for truth and justice.

Ms. Ovsyannikova deserves two thumbs up for her courage and honesty … I only hope her efforts were not in vain and that the people of Russia stand up against the brutal dictator in charge of their nation.

First Amendment Run Amok

Rick Wiles is an American non-denominational senior pastor at Flowing Streams Church in Vero Beach, FL, radio host and pundit. He is the founder of TruNews, a website known for promoting racist and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.

Mr. Wiles came onto my radar yesterday when I saw this …Wiles-tweetHe went on to say …

“If they take him [Trump] out, there’s gonna be violence in America. That’s all there is to it. However he leaves, there’s gonna be violence in America. I believe there are people in this country, veterans, there are cowboys, mountain men, I mean guys that know how to fight, and they’re going to make a decision that people who did this to Donald Trump are not gonna get away with it. And they’re gonna hunt them down. The Trump supporters are going to hunt them down. It’s going to happen, and this country is going to be plunged into darkness and they brought it upon themselves because they won’t back off.”

Yes, before you beat me to the punch, I know this is just ignorance and hatred talking, I know that Mr. Wiles is but a gnat on the posterior of humanity.  But … I propose that his speech is classified as hate speech and as incitement to violence and must be stopped.

I’ve said this at least a thousand times before on this blog … ‘Rights’ come with responsibilities.  Rights are not unconditional.  Those who cannot use their rights judiciously, who continually abuse them, who cause harm to others by invoking their own rights, must lose those rights.  I’ve spouted endlessly about the Second Amendment, how it does not give the right to unfettered and unconditional gun ownership, nor the right to own an unlimited number of guns with the capability of killing hundreds within minutes.  I don’t think the gun advocates or NRA supporters have heard me, but … know that someday, somehow, somebody will figure out how to shut the gun lobby down and inject common sense into the interpretation of the amendment.

The First Amendment is no different.  Contrary to popular belief, it does not give people the unlimited right to say whatever pops into their mind, in any venue, and at any time.  Mr. Wiles is a public figure, and as such, he has even more responsibility than the rest of us.  He has a history of racism and anti-Semitism.  He frequently referred to President Obama as a “demon from hell”.  He has asserted that the effects of Hurricane Harvey on the city of Houston, Texas resulted from Houston’s LGBT community; has described Judaism and Islam as “the Antichrist”; has called Central American immigrants a “‘brown invasion'” being used by God to punish American whites because of abortion; has claimed that the Las Vegas massacre was conducted by government death squads; has asserted that Antonin Scalia was murdered; and, in July 2018, predicted an imminent coup that would result in the nationally televised decapitation of the Trump family on the White House lawn.

There are those who would say all of the above fall under the protections of the First Amendment right to free speech.  I disagree.  Remember when Alex Jones claimed that the Sandy Hook school shooting was all a hoax and that the grieving parents were paid actors?  Some parents are still being threatened by the fools who bought into his theory. Remember when the same Alex Jones bought into the theory that Hillary Clinton and John Podesta were dealing in human trafficking and child sex slavery in the basement of a local pizzeria?  Yes, folks, words have consequences.

Do you seriously believe that the framers of the Constitution would endorse or support a man calling for the death of members of a political party solely because that party followed the mandates of the Constitution?

I think we have long passed the point where we need to codify the limitations on certain ‘rights’, starting with both the First and Second Amendments.  For far too long, it has been open season … people claiming that they have a right to say whatever they wish, whenever and wherever, and damn the consequences.  Mr. Wiles presents a clear and present danger to all of us who do not sing the praises of the Oaf in the Oval, and this is not … I repeat … THIS IS NOT the idea upon which this nation was founded.  The right to free speech was intended to provide people the ability to engage in political discourse, to state opposing viewpoints without fear of repercussions.  It was never ever intended to be a tool given to those who would incite violence for any reason.  This nation was once a hell of a lot better than it is today.  Think about it.

Newsworthy …

The news of the day is predominantly predictions and warnings about Hurricane Florence, expected to hit the Carolinas tomorrow.  Our friend Keith is in Charlotte, North Carolina, so I’ll be thinking of him and hoping he and his family are safe.  And, Trump is running his mouth & thumbs again, falsely claiming what a “great job” he did in the aftermath of last year’s Hurricane Maria that devastated Puerto Rico, and slamming San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz.  I will have more to say about that tomorrow. But a couple of other things crossed my path this morning …

And we thought the NRA was bad?

In yesterday’s New Hampshire republican primary, a man named Eddie Edwards won over Andy Sanborn by just over 3,000 votes, or 6.8%.  Eddie, endorsed by Rudy Giuliani, is a big Trump fan …

“The president’s doing one hell of a job in Washington. It’s about time we had a president who understood the values of our country and stood up for our country.”

eddie edwardsThat in itself is enough to make one want to head for the nearest bathroom, but that is far from the worst of it.  Edwards is a supporter of the 2nd Amendment, the likes of which we have never seen, not even in the most ardent gun supporters such as the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre.  Hold on to your hats for this one, folks.  Eddie fully supports a total repeal of the background check system.  A TOTAL repeal … no background checks … ever … for anyone.  But wait … there’s even more.

He says he would vote to shrink or eliminate the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms (ATF). He would oppose any legislative or regulatory prohibition on “bump stocks.” He also vows to repeal the 1996 federal law that prohibits bringing guns within 1000 feet of schools, to end limits on gun imports that are not for “sporting purposes,” and to even repeal the 1996 Lautenberg amendment that prevents people convicted of domestic violence from owning guns. In other words, not only would he eliminate the background checks, but would also arm more domestic abusers.  Listen to Eddie …

A 2013 poll by Mayors Against Illegal Guns found that even in pro-gun New Hampshire, 89 percent of likely voters supported universal mandatory background checks for gun purchases.  Now, aside from the fact that I don’t foresee Congress, even if Mr. Eddie Edwards were to attain a seat in the House, passing laws to make any of Eddie’s dreams come true, I find it extremely disturbing that a man with these ideas could make it as far as he has in politics.  At least 21,767 people  in new Hampshire support this insanity.

Free speech runs amok … again

It’s called the Institute for Historical Review (IHR).  Sounds innocuous enough, yes?  But no.  It is an anti-Semitic hate group whose main ‘claim to fame’ is in denying that the Holocaust happened, even claiming that the Anne Frank’s diary was a hoax and the gas chambers never existed.  This month, IHR has been allowed to place advertisements on San Francisco’s mass transit system, BART (Bay Area Regional Transit). BARTWhy?  Why would BART allow a blatantly, unapologetic anti-Semitic organization to advertise on its trains?  Because …

“You have to look at it for exactly what words are used and what images are used … There is plenty of case law and court rulings that show if you deny the ad, you can be taken to court, and you’ll lose, and that’s obviously costly.”

Anti-Semitism is on the rise … hate crimes and discrimination against Jews rose by 57% in the U.S. in 2017.  To be fair, anti-Semitism is on the rise in Europe also, but at least there, they have laws that curtail such abomination as hate groups advertising in public venues.  But here … anything goes under the guise of free speech.  This is not free speech … this robs people of their right to peace of mind!

In 2015, a judge ruled that New York’s MTA (Mass Transit Authority) could not stop an ad from being run that read “Killing Jews is Worship that draws us close to Allah.” The ad was created by a pro-Israel organization whose president, Pamela Geller, is a well-known Islamophobe.  And just last August, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) took the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority to court for refusing a number of ads, including one by right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos.

Those of you who have followed this blog for a while know that I am a staunch supporter of free speech, for I believe that it is the only thing keeping this nation free from a dictatorship.  Even when I don’t particularly like or agree with what is said, I support the person’s right to say it.  However, in my mind there is a line, and advertising anti-Semitism or any other form of hate on public transit crosses that line.  The divisiveness in this country today, and Donald Trump’s support of white supremacists, neo-Nazis and other hate groups has contributed to this madness.  What’s more, I see no end in sight, but predict an escalation to these types of hate speech.

It is quite possible to support freedom of speech without supporting speech that denigrates others and invites violence.  Think about  it.

Roseanne, Samantha and Free Speech

I have written about Colin Kaepernick and others who, in protest of police brutality against African-Americans and racism, took a knee rather than stand for the national anthem. But recently, a new blogger joined my circle of friends & readers, and when I read the post she did on this topic, I was awed. I simply had to share it with you, my friends, for Lindi Roze, blogging as Self Censored, has written the most thoughtful and thought-provoking piece on this topic that I have read. Please take a few moments to read Lindi’s piece and leave her a comment, if you feel so inclined. Thank you, Lindi, for this excellent post, and for your generous permission to share with my readers!

A Roze By Any Other Name

Critique does not come easy for me.  I try to be careful but truthful with my words.  I don’t like to be rude.  I don’t want to hurt anyone.  I consider myself a moderate in many things.  I prefer to look at both sides of an issue, as I know that circumstances can appear different to each of us. We all have experiences that color our perception of the world around us.  I’m one of those who believes in “being nice to someone no matter what because you don’t know what they’ve been through.”  When there is a bizarre statement trending on social media, I try to look it up before I pass judgment or share inaccurate or misleading information.  I have voted for political candidates on both sides of the aisle, taking into consideration which person I feel is best for the job. That being said, when push comes…

Who Is Anthony Peter Senecal?

Who is Anthony Peter Senecal and who pushed his damn button?  I am not sure whether it is hysterical laughter bubbling up in my throat, or a red haze of rage.  If it is both, I shall surely choke to death on it!

senecal1So who IS Anthony Senecal?  He is Donald Trump’s 84-year-old former butler.  Trump needs a butler?  He wants to be president of the U.S. and he cannot even dress himself? Sheesh.  But back to good ol’ Tony … he looks like just a harmless, kindly ol’ grandpa, doesn’t he?  But beware, he is not, in any sense of the word, kindly. His is the face of evil, just as surely as was Ted Bundy’s.  He is the epitome of why one should not judge a book by its cover, nor a person by his looks.

Tony worked for the trumpeter for nearly 30 years and refers to his former employer as “The King”.  Once, when da trumpeter was reportedly in a ‘sour mood’, Tony hired a bugler to play “Hail to the Chief” for him.  Oh puh-leaze!  In 1990, Mr. Senecal took a two-year sabbatical to become the mayor of a town in West Virginia, his ‘claim to fame’ there being that he required all panhandlers to carry ‘begging permits’.  Huh?  Why?

So now that you know who Anthony Peter Senecal is, you must be wondering why Filosofa is ranting about a seemingly innocuous, if not too bright, old man.  Well, this old man is under investigation by the Secret Service for his posts on Facebook.  A few shining examples:

  • “I feel it is time for the SECOND AMERICAN REVOLUTION !!!!! The only way we will change this crooked government is to douche it !!!!! This might be the time with this kenyan fraud in power !!!!! …[W]ith the last breath I draw I will help rid this America of the scum infested in its government–and if that means dragging that ball less dick head from the white mosque and hanging his scrawny ass from the portico–count me in !!!!!”
  • “Looks like that sleezey bastard zero (O) is trying to out maneuver Congress again, if the truth be known this prick needs to be hung for treason!!!”
  • “Stop the LYING BITCH OF BENGHAZI, NOW—killery clinton !!!!!! She should be in prison awaiting hanging !!!!!!!”
  • “Muzzie shits…are invading our country.”
  • “Our current ‘president’ is a rotten filthy muzzie !!!!! Period !!!!!! He continues his war on Christians !!!!!! …zero is against the people of America !!!!!”
  • “I think the actions of these a**wipes is so UN-American—they should be hung for treason !!!!!!” (in reference to the ‘Never Trump’ GOP movement)

There is more, but I think you get the idea.  His Facebook page is open to the public and I visited it briefly.  A few minutes was just about as much as I could stomach, as every post emanates hate and vitriol in almost visible waves.  Apparently Facebook has removed some of his posts, but I cannot understand why they have not simply shut down his account.  He often refers to Obama as “zero,” and several times he has called for the president’s execution.

News of Senecal’s Facebook rants was first published by Mother Jones last week, and was quickly followed by the start of a Secret Service investigation, as well as a disavowal (wisely) by the Trump camp.  “We totally and completely disavow the horrible statements made by him regarding the president,” said a spokesperson for the Trump campaign. We all know that I dislike Trump immensely, however this time I am not blaming Trump, who even I cannot hold accountable for the actions of his former employee.  If Senecal thought he was being helpful to and supportive of Trump by his rants and hate speech, he was wrong.

During the riots in Ferguson Missouri over the killing of an unarmed black man by police, he called for the city to be “removed”. “Move the sane people out during the day and carpet bomb the city from the face of the Earth at night,” he wrote. “If you blow up the protesters, oh well!!! Case Closed!!!” Makes me wonder how it is that he did not come under scrutiny by the Secret Service long before now!  I am almost positive that if I posted something similar on Facebook, on this blog, or on Twitter, within the hour there would be men in suits and dark glasses knocking at my door!

Ours is a nation with certain guarantees of ‘free speech’.  However, with any right comes responsibility.  Along with the right to freedom of speech comes the responsibility to use good judgement, the responsibility to get your point across in a reasonable manner and without hate.  I would add that there is an implied responsibility, also, to enhance one’s vocabulary beyond four-letter words.  The right to free speech, I believe, carries with it all of the above responsibilities, and one more:  respect.  I invite people to disagree with me with every blog post, every Op-Ed, every Facebook post or Tweet that I write, but I insist upon respect.  Mr. Anthony Peter Senecal is a vile individual who is lacking respect for everyone.  I hope his rights to freedom of speech will be curtailed, as I believe they must.

Erdo-how, Erdo-where, Erdoğun

U.S. politics is sometimes funny, sometimes maddening, almost always pathetic. However, lest we think we have a monopoly on funny, ridiculous political stories, this one is even funnier, in a sad sort of way, than anything we have seen here lately. What makes it particularly funny is the aftermath.  Of course, that is easy for me to say, since it took place halfway around the globe, but still, I think you will get a kick out of it.

In Germany, there is a political satire show called extra 3, which has been around on German network NDR since 1976, some forty years.  It is obviously a popular program.  Last month, 17 March, to be exact, the program presented a satirical music video titled “Erdowie, Erdowo, Erdoğan”. The song was a spoof, adapted from a German pop song. I’m certain it loses something in the translation, but here are the lyrics translated into English:

  • He’s living in grand style,
  • Big Boss from Bosporus.
  • (“A showy construction with a thousand rooms,
  • built without permit in a nature reserve”)
  • Press freedom gives him a swollen neck
  • That’s why he needs all those scarves
  • (Erdogan talking with a hoarse voice)
  • When a journalist writes an article
  • Erdoğan dislikes
  • He’ll be in jail by the next day and the
  • Newspaper’s editorial office gets closed down
  • He doesn’t think twice
  • And rides through the night
  • With tear gas and water cannons
  • Be nice to him,
  • Since he’s holding all the cards,
  • Erdo-how, Erdo-where, Erdoğun
  • The time is ripe
  • For his great Ottoman empire,
  • Erdo-how, Erdo-where, Erdoğun
  • Equal rights for women
  • Means they are beaten up equally
  • (“Istanbul police has dispersed an
  • International Women’s Day demonstration by force.”)
  • If the election results don’t suite his face
  • He’ll shake them into place
  • (I like to move it, move it)
  • He loathes the Kurds
  • And would much rather bomb them,
  • Than his brothers in faith over at ISIL.
  • Hand him over your money
  • He’ll built you a refugee tent
  • Erdo-how, Erdo-where, Erdoğun
  • His country is ripe
  • For EU-membership
  • He doensn’t give a shit about democracy
  • Erdoğan says “Hi and goodbye”
  • And rides off into the sunset.

To get the full effect, you should really watch the video, which has had more than 4 million hits … it is available with English subtitles here.

A brief bit of backstory:

Limited Freedom of the Press – Erdoğan, the president of Turkey, is cracking down on journalists who offend him. His renewed ambitions to install an authoritarian presidential system in Turkey make it appear that he might further restrict freedom of the press and open a path for a dictatorship. When Erdoğan was first elected Prime Minister, in 2003, many hoped that he would serve as a democratic model for the rest of the Islamic world. Turkish voters have refused to give him the blank check he desired, and last year turned down his effort to rewrite the Constitution to give himself vast new powers.  Since becoming President, Erdoğan has made a further turn toward dictatorship, crushing the remnants of a free press. In December, 2014, Turkish police arrested the editor of Zaman, the country’s largest newspaper, which had not only been a critic of Erdoğan but also written extensively about the corruption that pervades his government and family. The editor, Ekrem Dumanlı, was accused of trying to mount a coup d’état. Earlier this month, the government seized Zaman and began printing pro-government articles. More than 1,800 cases have been opened against people accused of insulting Erdogan since he came to office in 2014, under a previously seldom-used law against insulting the president. Those who have gone on trial include celebrities, journalists and even schoolchildren. He is also cracking down on other groups such as women’s rights advocates and Kurds.

Refugee Crisis – While Turkey was the first country to receive Syrian refugees some four years ago, Erdoğan’s motives were not necessarily humanitarian. He was hoping to convince NATO to take action against Syria’s al Assad, but when that did not play as Erdoğan hoped, he began funding Daesh in their fight against al Assad.  Erdoğan believed that the larger the number of displaced Syrians, the better his chances of convincing the international community of the need to enforce a no-fly zone across northern Syria, where the refugees could ostensibly be settled. Turkish authorities made it difficult for refugees, now numbering close to 2 million, to leave for third countries. As their numbers in Turkey reached a critical mass, NATO member states would be more likely to act, Erdoğan had hoped. His plans backfired, however, NATO did not act as he had hoped and Daesh was not successful in unseating al Assad.

So, given that condensed bit of history, as you can imagine, Erdoğan was not happy with the song and video blatantly mocking him!  In fact, from all accounts he was furious!  Erdoğan summoned German ambassador Martin Erdmann over the song, asking the German government to intervene and delete the video. Instead, the ambassador reminded Erdoğan that Germany is a nation with freedom of speech and freedom of press rights. Although the press in Germany does not enjoy as high a degree of freedom as in the U.S. and Canada and the press must follow some standards, political speech, including criticism of the government, is allowed. Representatives of the German government declined to intervene, and extra 3 followed up with English- and Turkish-subtitled versions of the video and republished a number of earlier videos criticizing the Turkish government! Erdoğan’s overreaction to a satirical video produced an outcry by the German public with representatives of all German parties criticizing the situation of lack of press freedom in Turkey.

At the same time, Erdoğan is seeking membership for Turkey in the European Union (EU). There are arguments both for and against, but that is a whole separate post. A spokesperson for the EU said he “does not appreciate” Turkey’s decision to call in the ambassador because of a satirical song, and “believes this moves Turkey further from the EU rather than closer to us.”  The EU has been hesitant in admitting Turkey as a member.  Wouldn’t it be something if Erdoğan, by throwing his little temper tantrum, closed the door on those negotiations?
