If GOP MAGAs Gain House Majority, It’ll Be Pay-back Time Leaving Little Time For Lawmaking

I know most of us will be glad when Election 2022 is behind us, and certainly we’re all hoping for the best possible outcome. In today’s post, our friend Gronda explains what the Republicans have in store if they are the victors at the end of the day, and it’s not a pretty picture. Thanks, Gronda, for sharing your prescient views.

The state of US democracy is in serious peril /Daryl Cagle / politicalcartoons.com

The following scenario is a conservative depiction of what voters can expect if GOP MAGAs gain a majority position in the US House of Representatives, post the November 2022 elections:

GOP MAGAs supporters of the defeated ex-president have started making demands on GOP MAGA lawmakers if they gain a majority position in the US Congress, like exacting retribution against everyone on the GOP MAGA defeated ex-president’s enemies list. In most cases the GOP MAGA voters are basing their commands on lies like the 2020 election was stolen from their leader by fraudulent means by the Democratic Party POTUS Joe Biden, that the ex-president’s trusted associates like the VP Mike Pence and the Justice Department’s head Mr. Bill Barr failed to do their jobs to keep their leader in power, that the US congressional GOP MAGA leaders like…

‘Raw smarm’ is not a descriptor a person should aspire to

When I’m voting for a candidate, I want to know who he/she is. Yes, I care about their stance on the issues of the time, but I also care about who they are … are they a good person, an honest person, a person of integrity, or will they pay lip service simply to win votes? Today, we are seeing far too many, especially in the Republican Party, who will do or say whatever they believe gives them the best chance at winning in November. These are NOT people I can respect, they are not people of integrity or people who have values that in any way match my own. Honesty. It’s all I ask. Our good friend Keith highlights one in particular, Kevin McCarthy, who is about as honest as a snake oil salesman. Thank you, Keith!

musingsofanoldfart

Smarm is not a good word to be described as. As a verb, it means the following: “behave in an ingratiating way in order to gain favor.” Synonyms for the term including being “obsequious, sycophantic or servile.” This term was used to define the Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy by a fellow Republican, former Congressman David Jolly. The reason this time is recordings of McCarthy saying Trump was unaware that his followers were executing the insurrection on the Capitol.

In an article called “‘Very rarely does America get to see the raw smarm of Kevin Mccarthy’: former Republican colleague” by Sarah K. Burris of Raw Story, no punches are pulled to react to McCarthy’s latest sycophantic episode to curry favor with the former president. Here are a few paragraphs, with a link to the article at the end.

“‘And you know [McCarthy] had a glimpse into the reality that…

What Drives The Election Roller Coaster?

The upcoming elections remind me watching a game of tennis, or ping pong … back, forth, left, right, back, forth.  Round and round she goes, where she lands no one knows.  To say that it is stressful is an understatement!  Frank Bruni’s latest column sums it all up fairly nicely …

Live By the Trump, Die By the Trump

By Frank Bruni

8 September 2022

Democrats were doomed. We prediction-mad pundits felt predictable certainty about that. The recent history of midterm elections augured disaster for the party in power. Inflation would make the damage that much worse.

So why are Republicans sweating?

Their overreach on abortion and the subsequent mobilization of women voters explain a great deal but not everything. There’s another prominent plotline. Its protagonist is Donald Trump. And its possible moral is a sweet and overdue pileup of clichés — about reaping what you sow, paying the piper, lying in the bed you’ve made.

Republicans chose to kneel before him. Will he now bring them to their knees?

Thanks in large part to Trump, they’re stuck with Senate candidates — Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, Herschel Walker in Georgia, Blake Masters in Arizona — whose ineptness, inanity, immoderation or all three significantly diminish their chances in purple states at a propitious juncture.

Thanks in even larger part to Trump, voters ranked threats to democracy as the most pressing problem facing the country in a recent NBC News poll. That intensifying concern is among the reasons that President Biden went so big and bold last week in his intensely debated speech about extremism in America. He was eyeing the midterms, and he was wagering that Republican leaders’ indulgence of Trump’s foul play and fairy tales might finally cost them.

Trump is also a factor in Republicans’ vulnerability regarding abortion rights. For his own selfish political purposes, he made grand anti-abortion promises. He appointed decidedly anti-abortion judges, including three of the Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. He as much as anyone fired up the anti-abortion movement to the point where Republicans may now get burned.

With two months until Election Day, Republicans want to focus voters’ attention on unaffordable housing, exorbitant grocery bills and the generally high cost of living. They want to instill deeper and broader fear about immigration and crime. They want to portray Democrats as the enemies of the American way.

But that’s more than a little tricky when Trump had America’s secrets strewn throughout the bowels of Mar-a-Loco. When his excuses for mishandling those classified documents change at a dizzying clip, contradict previous ones and often boil down to his typical infantile formula of I-know-you-are-but-what-am-I. When he uses Truth Social, the media penal colony to which Twitter and Facebook sentenced him, for all the old falsehoods plus new ones. When criminal charges against him aren’t out of the question.

The progressive excesses of some Democrats pale beside the madness of this would-be monarch.

Democrats could still have a bad, even brutal, November. That is indeed how the pendulum historically swings, and two months is plenty of time for political dynamics to change yet again. Biden could overplay his hand, a possibility suggested by that speech.

But for the moment, Republicans are spooked. Representative Kevin McCarthy, the House minority leader, has decided to try to recapture the party’s long-ago Contract-With-America magic by detailing a “Commitment to America” that will no doubt omit what should be the most important commitment of all — to the truth. It also won’t erase the fact that 196 of the 529 Republican nominees running for the House, the Senate, governor, attorney general or secretary had “fully denied the legitimacy of the 2020 election,” according to a chilling FiveThirtyEight analysis of the party’s nominees as of Wednesday.

That morally corrupt position was probably a political asset in their primaries, just as having Trump’s endorsement usually was. But in the general election? As Republican nominees pivot toward that, at least a few of them are realizing that it’s a different ballgame — and that Trump is trouble. They’re taking baby steps away from the world’s biggest baby.

Good luck with that. He’ll never let them go, never muffle himself long enough or behave well enough for there to be a Republican narrative that doesn’t revolve around him. That was clear to Republicans from the start. To hang with him is to hang with him.

Two Little Snippets

Just two little snarky snippets tonight … I really only planned one, but the second one dropped into my lap as I was doing the first, and I simply couldn’t resist letting loose a bit more snark!

Tell me again that racism is non-existent?

What would you do if you were standing outside your home, a stranger drove up, stopped, and demanded to see your lease to prove you live there?  I’m pretty sure my first reaction would be to tell her it was none of her damn business, my second would be to look around for a rock to hit her with!

Need I tell you that the man standing outside his home, minding his own business, is Black and the nosy, racist woman was a white Karen?

Dayson Barnes, who just moved into a Seattle neighborhood about three weeks ago, was standing in his backyard about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, when a woman who lives down the street passed by, then came back and parked in front of his house.  She told him she “knew” who lived there and it wasn’t him, and then … she called the police and reported a ‘residential burglary’.

Mr. Barnes went into his house to get his cell phone, intending to record whatever was going to happen next, and his partner came back outside with him.  His partner is a white male.  When the Karen laid eyes on his partner, she changed her tune.  When the partner accused Karen of calling the police simply because Mr. Barnes is a Black man, she replied …

“Oh my gosh this has nothing to do with race.”

Right, Karen.  The police arrived, spoke with Mr. Barnes and his partner, then left without filing an incident report.  Mr. Barnes and his partner recently moved to Seattle from, of all places, Texas!  Given that Washington is far more liberal than Texas, it was surprising to them.  Said Mr. Barnes …

“I didn’t think I’d have to experience this outside of the South.”

He shouldn’t have to experience it anywhere!  Not Texas, not Seattle, not Kalamazoo!  But sadly, racism is alive and well here in the United States, and it is spreading.

Breaking News!!!

As I was working on the above story, I received not one, not two, nor even three, but no less than five ‘breaking news’ updates and at least 10 Twitter notifications telling me that the FBI had implemented an unannounced raid on Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump’s current home, and had broken into his safe.

The first news of it, apparently came from Trump himself when he posted this to his ‘Truth Social’ account …

I count at least 13 lies in that statement.  I have no factual details of the raid, only that it did happen and that apparently they were searching for classified documents that they believe Trump had illegally removed from the White House when he left on January 20, 2021.  According to one analyst, the judge who signed the order had to have had overwhelming evidence that Trump would likely attempt to destroy the documents if he were forewarned of the raid, else he would never have authorized it.  In addition, I am told that Florida Governor DeSantis had to have been made aware of it.  I do not know whether Merrick Garland played any role or not, and frankly I doubt we will learn much about the details of the raid, since it is a tinderbox awaiting a spark at the moment AND because it involves highly classified information.

The Republicans seized on the moment to lick Trump’s boots, praise him, and express outrage at … who else … Democrats, Joe Biden, Merrick Garland and anybody else they don’t like.  Kevin McCarthy posted this on Twitter …

Threatening the Attorney General … yet another new low bar for the Republicans.  What that tells me is he’s running scared, just like Marco Rubio, who tweeted “The FBI isn’t doing anything about the groups vandalizing Catholic Churches, firebombing Pro-Life groups or threatening Supreme Court justices. But they find time to raid Mar A Lago.”

Don’t get your hopes up too high, but … let’s have at least a bit of hope that justice will be served, that this is the beginning of the end of Donald Trump’s illusory 2024 presidential campaign and perhaps his freedom as well!

What’s In Store? Ask Kevin …

The Republican Party, aka GOP, has a large number of highly UNqualified and horrible people in its ranks today.  Margie Greene, Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz, Ted Cruz, Paul Gosar, Louie Gohmert, J.D. Vance, Mehmet Oz, Doug Mastriano, to name just a few who are better suited to working in a circus than in politics.  Or is there even a difference anymore?  But these people are pests, more than anything.  That’s not to say they aren’t dangerous, for they are.  They have voices that are far too loud, far too obnoxious, and that seems to be what Republican voters care about today.  But the bigger dangers are those ‘leaders’ within the party, those whose power to affect what happens is greater than the rest.  Today, I want to talk about one such creature, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

McCarthy represents California’s 23rd district, the most heavily Republican district in the state, and has done so since 2013.  Before that, he spent six years are the U.S. House representative for the 22nd district which, due to redistricting, is largely the same district he represents today.  McCarthy, unlike Herschel Walker, Mehmet Oz, Margie Greene and so many others is not stupid, but rather cold and calculating.  McCarthy and many others believe that if the Republicans seize a majority in the House of Representatives next year, he will be made Speaker of the House, which would give him considerably more power than he has today, although contrary to what he seems to believe, it would not give him unlimited power.  And, there is a possibility that the party would name someone else to be Speaker, though that is up for debate.

I follow McCarthy on Twitter for the sole reason that he is a significant influence and I want to know his thoughts, his plans.  And frankly, I’m not liking what I’m hearing.  Take this tweet, for example …

“Think about this → Inflation is so high that if you’ve had a constant salary for the last year, it’s like you’ve worked more than a month without pay. This is what Washington Democrats took from you. This is the Pelosi Pay Cut.”

He fails to mention that Congress has stymied and blocked an increase in the federal minimum wage rate for over a decade, and therefore the $7.25 a minimum wage worker earns is worth $5.28 today.  That equates to $10,982.40 per year.  THIS, more than anything, is why people are struggling.  His claim about working more than a month without pay is, as my friend Brosephus calls it, bovine fecal matter, or bullshit.

Nearly every single one of McCarthy’s tweets is a put-down of Democrats or of President Biden … he presents no new ideas, no platform … his only ideas are to fault the Democrats for anything and everything, blame the President for whatever he sees wrong with the country, and swear to get ‘revenge’.  But let’s take a look … sift through the bovine fecal matter and see what, exactly, McCarthy (and others) plan to do if the Republicans should gain a majority in either or both chambers of Congress next year.

Here are a few of his ‘ideas’ …

  • Under Nancy Pelosi, the House of Representatives hasn’t held a single hearing on the origins of COVID-19. That’ll change next year when Republicans are in charge.
  • When Republicans take control, we’ll use the gavel to get answers. Republicans will investigate Hunter Biden’s shady business dealings. Republicans will hold China accountable for COVID19. Republicans will secure the border.
  • Gas prices are high because the Biden administration has made it harder to produce oil here at home. And now he is sending our emergency reserves to other countries like China. This is reckless and won’t solve the problem. We must produce more U.S. energy to lower prices.
  • This gas crisis was entirely predictable and preventable. But Democrats caved to the radical extremists in their party and doubled down on policies that hurt you. A Republican House majority will STOP the madness and put America FIRST.

So … he’s going to waste time and resources investigating the origins of Covid which, it is my understanding, has already been done, but apparently not to his satisfaction.  And he’s going to also waste time and resources investigating Hunter Biden … oh for Pete’s sake, let’s put Hunter Biden to bed!  Hunter is not the president and what he did or did not do is NOT a matter for Congress to investigate!

Gas prices … gas prices … gas prices!  It’s a selling point for the Republicans, because it affects everyone and affects the poorest the most.  However, gas prices are high because the oil industry used the supply chain issues as an excuse to raise their prices far more than their cost increased, which has given the oil companies record profits this year!  And while I might not have any problem with his idea of making the U.S. more energy self-sufficient, unfortunately McCarthy’s idea has nothing to do with renewable energy … nope, he is talking about oil and gas, further destruction of our already devastated environment.  Why?  Well, for one thing, he has already raised over $20 million in donations this year, much of it from the oil and gas industry.  Oh yes, he has a vested interest in pandering to those who are robbing the people of this nation blind!  And in some convoluted thought process, he also said, “We care about the environment, but we care about jobs more.”  Um … people won’t need the jobs before long if we don’t tend to the environment NOW!

McCarthy spoke at the America First Summit that headlined the former guy last week … here is part of what he said …

“I believe in this next election, this is a 50-year election. Never before are we going to feel this type of opportunity in a year of redistricting. We can lock in a conservative majority for the decade.”

There … he said it out loud … they have gerrymandered themselves into a position where they will dominate for the next 10 years.  I shudder at the very thought of it.

And his latest rant is in regard to the Inflation Reduction Act, which you’d think he would support, since all he does is whine about inflation, but nope.  He is falsely telling people it will raise their taxes … his goal obviously being to rile the masses … but the only ones who will see a tax increase are large corporations who are making billions and paying very minimal taxes.  Don’t you think it’s about damn time for the wealthy to start paying their share???  They’re robbing us at the grocery store, the gas station, and everywhere else, so … when do they start contributing to this nation that has been so good to them?  But, again, McCarthy looks to the source of his donations, his own wealth, and bends over.

McCarthy is only one of the many Republicans who would turn this nation into something ugly for the majority of us, but he is one with more power than most, and like most of the Republicans in Congress today, he has no conscience, no values, no integrity.  That’s a lethal combination, my friends.  And that is why we cannot afford to let the Republicans gain a majority in either the House or the Senate.  This may well be the most important election of our lifetime.

Where’s The Justice???

What is a life worth?  Well, it depends.  If you are a Capitol Police officer trying to defend the nation against a bloody coup attempt, apparently your life isn’t worth all that much.  U.S. Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick (say his name, dammit!) died on January 7th, 2021 as a result of injuries he sustained the prior day as thousands stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn our voices, our votes, our democracy.  Two of the men responsible for Officer Sicknick’s death are George Tanios and Julian Khater.  They brought pepper spray and bear spray, which they sprayed into officers’ faces, and it was this that led to Officer Sicknick’s two strokes that ultimately killed him.

Mr. Tanios was initially charged with ten counts, including felony charges of rioting, assaulting law enforcement officers and obstructing of Congress’s certification of President Biden’s 2020 election victory.  Yesterday, however, Tanios was offered a plea bargain which he gladly accepted, and the charges were reduced to two misdemeanors:  trespassing and disorderly conduct on restricted Capitol grounds.  The maximum time he will serve for Mr. Sicknick’s murder is a maximum of one year in prison.  He has served five months already, his sentencing hearing is scheduled for December, by which time he will have served another five months, so who wants to bet he will be home for Christmas?  The bastard viciously and without conscience attacked and murdered a Capitol Police officer, and he will walk practically free.

Yo!  Kevin McCarthy … you talk about respect for the police and how you support the police … where’s your outrage today?  Officer Sicknick was there to protect YOU, but I haven’t heard a peep out of you about this unconscionable plea deal!  Republicans?  Do you have nothing to say?  Sigh … okay, I get it … just more of the right-wing hypocrisy we’ve become used to.  Meanwhile, Officer Sicknick’s family will cry real tears for him at Christmas, while George Tanios will be laughing and celebrating with his family.  Where’s the justice?

A Chilling Tweet

There are probably no more than five Republicans sitting in Congress today who are deserving of the honour of representing We the People, and of the new ones currently seeking a seat in Congress, not a single one is qualified.  And yet, their lies and wild conspiracy theories have gained them a following and there is a possibility that Republicans will gain a majority in one or possibly both chambers of Congress next year.  That, in and of itself should make intelligent people of good conscience more determined than ever to overcome the barriers and get out to vote, take their neighbors to the polls, volunteer as a poll worker … whatever it takes to keep Republicans out of Congress.  I have never been a member of either party, have always been an Independent, but I’ve never felt as affiliated, even if unofficially, with a party as I do the Democrats today.

This morning, the following text by Kevin McCarthy sent a distinct chill down my spine …

And the first thought that came to my mind was … they plan to impeach President Biden!

For what?  For nothing.

The article he refers to in the New York Post was written by none other than McCarthy himself and the ignoble Jim (Gym) Jordan, neither of which are known for being truthful or men of good conscience.

Let’s be clear here … I neither know nor particularly care what Hunter Biden did or didn’t do when he worked for Burisma Holdings.  Hunter Biden is not the president of the U.S.  Hunter Biden does have a drug problem, but that does not make him a criminal, and frankly I think we all … each and every one of us … have a family member with a drug or alcohol problem … I know I do.  But more to the point, we don’t blame people for the sins of their family members … if we did, nobody could ever be elected to any public office.  If we did, Justice Clarence Thomas would have been ousted from the Supreme Court already.

In fact, McCarthy himself does not have a clean nose.  He dropped out of the race for Speaker of the House in 2015 after his affair with a congresswoman from North Carolina was made public, and … his brother-in-law owns a construction company that has suspiciously received more than $7.6 million in federal contracts since 2000.  All of which is irrelevant, but points to the old saying that “people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.”

Think about this one for a minute … if the Republicans gain a majority in the House and Senate, and if the Republicans are stupid enough to vote for McCarthy to be the Speaker of the House following November’s election, then they could indeed begin investigations and could indeed dig up or make up something about some member of the President’s family, could embellish it to the point of making it sound like a smoking gun, and vote to impeach.  See, here’s the thing … the Republican Party of today is one without values, without integrity, without a conscience.  The Constitution no longer means anything to them … We the People no longer mean anything, except to be manipulated and used as a tool for their own benefit. It is a party that is in the fearsome grip of a madman who hopes to become the dictator of this nation two years hence.  So, even without any viable or legitimate evidence, there is no doubt that the Republicans in both chambers of Congress would fall in line, be in lockstep with McCarthy’s plot.

So, what if they impeach Biden?  Kamala Harris would be the only thing standing in the way of a “President Kevin McCarthy”.  Are you chilled yet?  And we can bet money that a “President McCarthy” would be a puppet of the evil ‘man’ currently residing at Mar-a-Lago.

We the People have the power to stop this plan in its tracks, but WE MUST ALL VOTE!!!  That is, literally, the ONLY way to preserve what is left of the democratic foundations of this country.  VOTE McCarthy OUT, for Pete’s Sake!  Vote them all out!!!  The Republican Party is no longer one of decency, of conscience, of integrity or values.  Their only goal is power … absolute power … and they will lie, cheat, and steal to obtain that goal.  And that, my friends, should scare the hell out of you.

Uh-Oh … The Snark Meter Is High Tonight

It does seem that my snark-o-meter is registering on high these days!  Is yours?

Kevin McCarthy … what a guy

By noon yesterday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy had tweeted twelve times.  Here is just one of his many tweets …

The rest of his tweets were all about putting down President Biden and House Speaker Pelosi, blaming them for everything from the price of fuel to the border “crisis” as he calls it.  Now, We the People pay Mr. McCarthy some $193,400 per year of our hard-earned tax dollars to work, to legislate, and not to waste half his day tweeting and the other half obstructing to ensure that no real laws come out of our Congress.

And coming back to that tweet … he’s patting himself on the back for introducing a bill that is intended to stop tech companies, such as Google, Facebook and others from marking GOP solicitation emails as “spam” … which, of course, is precisely what ANY solicitation email from a politician is, regardless of party.  In this, a time when we have a gun crisis that has already caused more than 21,000 deaths by guns, some 800 of them children.  In this time when innocent people are living under a dark cloud of violent threats for doing their jobs or expressing their opinions.  In this time when in many places it is hotter in early June than is normal in mid-August due to the effects of climate change as a result of our disregard for the environment.  In this time when our voting rights are being stripped away, women’s rights are becoming a thing of the past, and LGBTQ rights are being shoved out the window.  In this time when our schools are being told they cannot teach the legitimate, factual history of this nation, but must instead teach the fantasy white-washed version of the nation’s past!  In this, the time when wildfires in the west are sure to cause record-breaking damage, when water sources are endangered … and the ONLY thing Mr. McCarthy can be bothered to work on is … whether your email server marks a GOP donation request as ‘spam’ or not???  C’mon, people … fire this asshat in November and vote in somebody who actually understands the issues, understands what matters, is dedicated to his oath and willing to work to actually earn the money we pay him/her!!!

Oh … and just in case you’re wondering if McCarthy is going to step up to the plate on the gun legislation that will be on the docket in the House of Representatives … no.  He and his buddy Steve Scalise (himself a victim of gun crime) have made clear that they will vote against even this milquetoast legislation and will expect and demand that the other House Republicans do the same.  What a guy, eh?

And speaking of intelligence, or a lack thereof …

Herschel Walker, Senate candidate from Georgia, certainly is not on the path to winning any academic awards.  I’ve said before that there should be criteria, qualifications for a person running for public office, and after Walker’s latest, I think those requirements should include an IQ test with a passing score of at least 100, which is approximately the average in the United States.  Mr. Walker’s candidacy is filled with lies, as I pointed out in a previous post, but his latest faux pas takes the cake.

Apparently, Mr. Walker and Stacey Abrams, who is running for governor of Georgia hoping to unseat Brian Kemp, don’t … er … shall we say don’t get along famously, aren’t best buddies.  So, Ms. Abrams had been speaking about some of the problems in the state of Georgia that she hopes to address in the future, such as  mental health treatment, maternal mortality, incarceration rates and wages.  This is what candidates do … or at least ones who are serious about representing the people rather than their own interests … they talk about issues and how they think they can best solve problems.  But … apparently Walker doesn’t understand this and he took umbrage, telling Ms. Abrams to … wait for it …

“If you don’t believe in the country, leave and go somewhere else. If it’s the worst state, why are you here? Why don’t you leave ― go to another? There’s, what, 51 more other states that you can go to?”

This is a man who is running for a seat in the United States Senate and he doesn’t know how many states comprise the United States.  For the record, just in case any Republicans are reading this, there are 50 states.  This would be funny if it weren’t for the fact that this man could well be one of the 100 members of the highest legislative body in the nation, in charge of making decisions that will affect all our lives!

January 6th Hearings And A Snippet

I mostly want to talk a bit about last night’s televised hearings, but also have another snippet … or maybe two … who knows?  🤷

January 6th Committee hearings

I watched the televised hearings of the January 6th committee tonight, and I have to tell you, by the time they took a 10-minute recess after the first hour, I was more than ready for a break!  I was shaking and couldn’t catch my breath after watching some of that footage.  I’ve never wanted to hurt somebody more in my life than I wanted to hurt those ugly people storming the Capitol.

The hearing was interesting … nay, fascinating … but not much new information has been presented as yet.  Still, watching the first-hand account by the police officer, Caroline Edwards, who was wounded, knocked unconscious, then resumed her duties to protect the Capitol upon regaining consciousness, only to be injured yet again, was riveting.  She did not cry as she described the ‘carnage’ and ‘chaos’, but I wanted to cry for her.

Initially, the investigation was going to be held by an independent, non-partisan group of people similar to the 9/11 Commission, but the Republicans, namely Kevin McCarthy, protested that they wanted a partisan, congressional committee.  Presumably, he thought this would give him and his minions a degree of control over what information was sought and revealed. His attempt to put two Republican members of Congress on the committee who were to some extent involved in the events of that day, Jim Jordan and Jim Banks, proved his intent, and since then he has made no secret of the fact that if he gets the opportunity after the November elections, he will shut down the committee and destroy its work.  Too late, Kev … we’re seeing it and we cannot … will not unsee it.

That said, I think a non-congressional, non-partisan investigative body would have been a better solution because the Republicans already have and will continue to claim that it’s a “witch hunt” to “get Donald Trump” by “people who don’t like him.”  With a non-congressional, non-partisan committee, it would have been much more difficult for them to make that claim and be believed.  Then again, their followers will believe almost anything, as we saw from the various testimonies tonight by people who honestly (or so they say) believed that Trump had told them to come do their dirty deeds that day.

However, McCarthy forced the hand of Nancy Pelosi and I think she put together a great committee.  Sadly, the two Republicans who voluntarily joined, Representatives Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, have been bullied and harassed by their peers in the Republican Party.  Ms. Cheney is holding her own, but Mr. Kinzinger announced early on that he will not run for re-election in November.

Just from what we saw tonight, it appears the committee has done good work, despite the fact that numerous people they needed to talk to have foolishly ignored their subpoenas or refused to answer questions, invoking their 5th Amendment right not to incriminate themselves … meaning, of course, that they are guilty to a greater or lesser extent.  The committee is still gathering information, crossing their ‘t’s and dotting their ‘i’s, and their report will live on far past their tenure in Congress.  I hope … I am sure … that there are numerous copies of the entirety of their work stored in secure locations away from the Capitol just in case some disaster should befall the Capitol.

A seditionist for Governor of Michigan???

Ryan Kelley is … or was … running on the Republican ticket for Governor of Michigan, hoping to unseat Gretchen Whitmer.  His campaign may have just sounded the death knell, though, as on Thursday morning, Mr. Kelley was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for his role in the January 6th insurrection/attempted coup.  Kelley is charged with committing violence against a person or property on restricted grounds, damaging federal property, disorderly conduct and entering a restricted building or grounds without permission.  All four charges are misdemeanors, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office … which I do not understand.  How can these be only misdemeanors?  Violence against a person?  A misdemeanor???  WHY???

Kelley was released after appearing briefly in federal court and was not even required to post bail!  Grrrrrrrrrrrr.  The evidence is incontrovertible that Kelley was at the Capitol on January 6th 2021, but some are already claiming that his arrest was an attempt by the FBI to undermine his campaign for governor.  I said a minute ago that this could be the death knell for his campaign, but on the other hand, seeing how the Republican mentality works, this might just give his campaign a surge!  The nastier they are, the better the Republicans like them.

They Eat Their Own …

If you ever wonder why there are few, if any, good people in the GOP, it’s because it is suicide to be a good person in today’s GOP, aka Republican Party.  Yes, that’s right, folks … you either play by their rules, or you’re out of the game.  The latest example is U.S. Representative Chris Jacobs of New York who had the audacity to say, after speaking about the most recent mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas, “I can’t in good conscience sit back and say I didn’t try to do something.”  Them’s fightin’ words in the Republican ranks these days!

Within the week, he was told by GOP members in no uncertain terms that his opinions were not welcome, and was taken to task by Junior, aka the son of the evil former guy.  WHAT THE HELL does Junior even have to do with anything?  He’s never held a government position and doesn’t even have an IQ over 75!!!  He is irrelevant … or should be, but this is, after all, the Republican Party where the only requirement is that you be a racist and a gun nut — Junior qualifies on both of those.

Anyway, long story short, Mr. Jacobs has decided NOT to run for re-election in November.  See, my friends?  The Republicans do not want good people in their party … they want only corrupt assholes!  Every single one of the ‘good people’ in the Republican Party that I can think of have left.  Justin Amash, representative from Michigan, tried to straddle that fence and ultimately gave up in 2019, leaving the Republican Party.  Adam Kinzinger, Representative from Illinois since 2011 and one of the few Republicans with a conscience, announced last year, after much harassment from his party over his role on the January 6th investigative committee, that he will not seek re-election this year.  See, folks???  The Republican Party does not want good people, they want crooks, corrupt politicians who don’t give a fig about the people paying their salaries!!!

Mr. Jacobs words upon announcing his decision …

“We have a problem in our country in terms of both our major parties. If you stray from a party position, you are annihilated. For the Republicans, it became pretty apparent to me over the last week that that issue is gun control. Any gun control.”

Yesterday, the former guy’s buddy Peter Navarro was indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of criminal contempt that each carry a maximum sentence of a year in prison, as well as a fine of up to $100,000.  ‘Bout damn time!  But wait … ol’ Louie Gohmert, Republican representative from Texas 🙄 whined that …

“If you’re a Republican, you can’t even lie to Congress or lie to an FBI agent or they’re coming after you.”

Say WHAT???  You’re not supposed to lie to Congress or the FBI, fool!!!  If any of us did so, we’d be in prison for a few years!  Seems to me that ol’ Louie doesn’t understand the meanings of “integrity”, “honesty”, and “responsibility”.  And for this, We the People pay this ‘man’ $174,000 every year!  C’mon, Texans … get this asshole out of our Congress!

I will tell you in no uncertain terms that anybody … anybody who votes for ANY Republican candidate in November is, in my book, careless about the future of this nation, the future of the human species, the future of the planet.  If you vote for any of the sub-humans on the GOP ticket, you are dooming this nation and its people to a lifetime of hell.  Oust them!!!  Oust McCarthy, Gaetz, Gohmert, Boebert and Greene!  Replace them with people who have both a brain and a conscience, people who will act in the best interest of us all, not only their wealthy donors in the gun and fossil fuel industries!  Don’t like some of the Democrats?  So what?  I don’t like some of them either, but the party doesn’t shun those who want to help the people of this nation, who really do want to try to make this a better place for us all.
