♫ Have I Told You Lately ♫

This song was originally written and recorded by Northern Irish singer and songwriter Van Morrison for his nineteenth studio album Avalon Sunset (1989).  Although he would later rerecord the song with The Chieftans in 1995 which would go on to win a Grammy, Van Morrison’s original recording wasn’t wildly popular, ranking only at #12 in Ireland and the U.S., and #74 in the UK.

In 1991, Rod Stewart covered the song for his album Vagabond Heart.  When the single was released in 1993, it made the big time, charting at #1 in Canada, #5 in both the U.S. and the UK.  I didn’t recall Van Morrison’s recording of it, but I well remember liking Rod Stewart’s back in the day.

The song has been covered by many including Della Reece, Engelbert Humperdinck, Kenny Rogers, Barbara Mandrell, and Barry Manilow.  Admittedly, I did not listen to the rest, so I cannot speak of them, but I did listen tonight to Van Morrison’s and Rod Stewart’s versions.  My preference is Rod Stewart, but I offer both so you can decide for yourself!

♫ Forever Young ♫

Last night my friend Carolyn over at Nuggets of Gold wrote a post … she’s a storyteller, and a damn fine one at that.  Her post was titled “Forever Young” and naturally this song by Rod Stewart came into all our minds.  I don’t know about Tippy, Jim and Jason (her most prolific commentors), but the song stayed in my head all evening!  Begging for release, it was (Carolyn, I owe you one, my friend!) and so I really had no choice but to play it here tonight.  I really can’t complain, though, for I do like the song and the video is rather interesting.

Rod Stewart wrote this song with his guitarist Jim Cregan and his keyboard player Kevin Savigar. Rod considers it one of the songs he’s most proud of, saying …

“I love ‘Forever Young,’ because that was a real heartfelt song about my kids. I suddenly realized I’d missed a good five years of Sean and Kimberley’s life because I was so busy touring all the time. With these kids now I don’t make that mistake – I take them on tour with me, so I can watch them grow up. So that’s another favourite. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a big hit in England, but it’s like a national anthem here (America).”

Andy Taylor of Duran Duran produced the album with Stewart and performed the guitar solo on this song.  Released in 1988, the song went to #9 in Canada, #12 in the U.S., and initially only reached #57 in the UK.  However, it returned to the UK singles chart in 2013 after it was featured in the Tesco 2013 Christmas advertising campaign. This time it peaked at #55, improving by two whole places!

The structure of the lyrics in this song is very similar to a Bob Dylan song of the same title. After its completion, the song was then sent to Dylan, asking whether he had a problem with it. The two men agreed to participate in the ownership of the song and share Stewart’s royalties.  Wow … no lawsuits, no arguments, just the spirit of cooperation to provide good music.

In January 1989, immediately following the broadcast of Super Bowl XXIII, NBC Sports used “Forever Young” as the soundtrack for a year-in-review montage showcasing highlights from the 1988 Summer Olympics, the 1988 World Series, the 1989 Fiesta Bowl, and Super Bowl XXIII. All four events had been broadcast by NBC.

♫ Sad Songs (Say So Much) ♫

The other night I played an Elton favourite, Daniel, and a couple of suggestions were forthcoming for future Elton songs.  This was the one I had intended to play before I got caught up in Daniel, and I promised then that you would see it soon … glad David reminded me!

I really don’t have much trivia about this song, other than it was co-written, as were most of Elton’s songs, by Bernie Taupin and Elton.  This song is the closing track on the 1984 album Breaking Hearts. It reached #7 on the UK charts and #5 on the U.S. charts. The lyrics describe how it sometimes helps for someone who is feeling sad, or who has lost a partner, to listen to old radio blues classics.  Personally, that seems rather like pouring salt into a wound, and if I’m sad I’d much rather listen to something cheerful and upbeat, like The Carpenter’s Top of the World, or Leslie Gore’s Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows!

Elton performed this song on One Night Only: The Greatest Hits Live at Madison Square Garden with Canadian rock star Bryan Adams. In 2013, John was joined by Rod Stewart in a special performance of the song at the London Palladium after being presented with first Brits Icon award in recognition of his “lasting impact” on UK culture.

♫ Maggie May ♫ (Redux)

I last played this one a couple of years ago, and after a conversation with a friend, it got stuck in my head tonight.  So, in the interest of a (hopefully) early bedtime tonight (early being before 3:00 a.m.), I’m giving you what I think is one of Rod Stewart’s best …

Released in 1971 and co-written by Rod Stewart and Martin Quittenton, Stewart says his inspiration for the song was a memory of the 1961 Beaulieu Jazz Festival …

“At 16, I went to the Beaulieu Jazz Festival in the New Forest. I’d snuck in with some mates via an overflow sewage pipe. And there on a secluded patch of grass, I lost my not-remotely-prized virginity with an older (and larger) woman who’d come on to me very strongly in the beer tent. How much older, I can’t tell you – but old enough to be highly disappointed by the brevity of the experience.”

This song came together when Stewart began working with guitarist Martin Quittenton from the band Steamhammer (who I don’t recall ever hearing of). They convened at Stewart’s house in Muswell Hill, where Quittenton played some chords that caught Rod’s ear. He started singing the words to the Liverpool folk song Maggie Mae, which got him thinking about that day 10 years earlier.

This was the first big hit of the rock era to feature a mandolin, which was mostly heard in folk music. Stewart first used the instrument on Mandolin Wind, which was one of the first songs he recorded for the album Let It Be. He liked the results, so he used it on Maggie May as well.  Maggie May remains the biggest mandolin-based hit ever recorded.

I was surprised to see that this was a #1 hit in the UK also, but then I discovered that Rod Stewart is British!  Who knew?  Not I, that’s for sure.  I also did not know until I played this the first time and David commented about it … Rod Stewart was once a gravedigger.  Again, who knew?  So much to learn about the artists and the songs I play … for me, that’s at least half the joy in doing these music posts.  According to Wikipedia …

Stewart is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 250 million records worldwide. He has had ten number-one albums and 31 top ten singles in the UK, six of which reached number one. Stewart has had 16 top ten singles in the US, with four reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. He was knighted in the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to music and charity.

♫ It Takes Two ♫

After the events of the evening (the aforementioned cat fight), I was pretty sure there could be no music post tonight, but then … dear David mentioned this song by the wonderful Marvin Gaye, and I knew I had my song for the night!  Thank you, David!

It Takes Two is a hit single recorded in late 1965 by Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston for Motown’s Tamla label.

Produced by Weston’s then-husband, longtime Gaye collaborator William “Mickey” Stevenson, and co-written by Stevenson and Sylvia Moy, It Takes Two centered on a romantic lyric that depicted many things in life (dreams, love, wishes, etc.) being better with two people instead of one. The single became Gaye’s most successful duet single to date, later outperformed by Gaye’s duets with Tammi Terrell.

According to Kim Weston …

“Marvin and I went into the studio together to record the album Take Two. We didn’t pick the tracks, they were picked by Mickey Stevenson, my then-husband, and our producer, but ‘It Takes Two’ had been written by him and Sylvia Moy especially for us and it really worked. Being in the studio with Marvin, I saw a new side to him. I’d traveled and shared bills with him so we knew how each other worked. In the studio he was really encouraging. He added little ad libs, intonations here and there and suggested things for the arrangements. I saw the genius shine out of him but also the frustration. You could hear it in his voice. He wanted more control.  It was a shock when they released the song as a single. I’d already left Motown and gone to MGM. I don’t think Motown knew I was going to leave and I was upset that this came out after I’d gone. I regret never having the chance to sing it live with Marvin. I felt my duets with Marvin really paved the way for what he did with Tammi Terrell next. Our songs influenced theirs, and if I’d stayed at the label I think I’d have been singing those songs with him instead.”

Though Gaye had already racked up a number of hits in the US, this was his first Top 40 hit in the UK. The song reached #14 in the U.S. and #16 in the UK … the Canadians apparently didn’t like it, for it didn’t chart there.  

In 1990, the song was covered by Rod Steward and Tina Turner, where it was a Top Ten throughout Europe.

As sometimes happens, I had a certain song in mind to play tonight, for after chatting with a friend about it, it’s been stuck in my poor head all day.  But, as often happens, I spent a great deal of time tonight working on my a.m. post, then on a project that Jeff and I are launching later today, and then answering comments, and … long story short, it is late and I am exhausted!  So, I am re-duxing one that I played in September for the same friend I played it for then.  Tap ‘dem toes, David!


Back in April, I had a request for a song that I was familiar with by an artist I was not familiar with.  Confused yet?  Well, the song, as you can see from the title, is Ruby Tuesday, and I was familiar with the Rolling Stones’ version, but the one requested was by a singer, Melanie, with whom I was not familiar.  As so often happens, life interfered (more likely Donald Trump interfered with my life), and I forgot all about it.  Tonight, I wanted to play something special for the requester of the song, so I dug back through my notes and said … AHA!!!

By the way … any of you who have requested a song that I haven’t played … feel free to nudge or remind me, for I truly am a very forgetful old woman these days, and my intentions are good, but …

This was the fourth US #1 hit for the Rolling Stones in 1967, written by Keith Richards, who says of the song …

“It was probably written about Linda Keith not being there.  I don’t know, she had pissed off somewhere. It was very mournful, very, VERY Ruby Tuesday and it was a Tuesday. That’s one of those things – some chick you’ve broken up with. And all you’ve got left is the piano and the guitar and a pair of panties. And it’s goodbye you know. And so it just comes out of that. And after that you just build on it. It’s one of those songs that are easiest to write because you’re really right there and you really sort of mean it. And for a songwriter, hey break his heart and he’ll come up with a good song.”

Originally called Title B, this was mainly written by Brian Jones and Keith Richards, but in keeping with Stones tradition, it was credited to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.  The Stones’ version hit #1 in the U.S., #2 in Canada, and #3 in the UK.  And then along came …

Melanie Anne Safka, better known as just Melanie, is best known for the 1971/72 global hit Brand New Key, her composition What Have They Done to My Song Ma, and her 1970 international breakthrough hit Lay Down (Candles in the Rain), inspired by her experience of performing at the 1969 Woodstock music festival.  She was at Woodstock and still I haven’t heard of her?  Odd that.  Now, I listened to the first two mentioned and I have to admit that I wasn’t fond of either.  And, sorry David, but I still prefer the Stones’ version of this one.

Saturday Surprise — Let’s Have An Adventure!

Good Saturday morning, friends!  No, no … don’t take your coats off, for we are going on an adventure today!  It’s been ages since we went exploring new places, and Jolly has the Filomobile all warmed up and ready to go!  Don’t worry … we’ll have you back in plenty of time for you do go do some Christmas shopping with the family.

First stop on our agenda today is Honolulu, Hawaii … let’s hope it’s warmer there than it is here, eh?  You may be surprised that we are going all the way to Hawaii to visit … a candy shoppe!  It’s one of the oldest Japanese candy stores in the United States, and I’m told they have quite a unique selection, so I thought it would be fun to start our adventure with a bit of something sweet to give us energy.  Well, here we are …Nisshodo-outsideI know it doesn’t look like much on the outside, but let’s go in and see what they’ve got to offer.  Oh look at all that! Nisshodo-4Doesn’t it all look yummy?  Welcome, friends, to Nisshodo Mochiya where the sweets are made in the Japanese-Hawaiian culinary tradition that stretches back to the mid-19th century, when the first Japanese immigrants came to Hawaii as indentured laborers on sugar plantations.

One of these immigrants was Asataro Hirao. He was already living in Honolulu when, in the 1910s, he decided to return to his home city of Hiroshima for a visit. That’s where he learned to make Japanese confections. When he returned to Honolulu, Nisshodo Mochiya was born.  Hirao tweaked traditional recipes, adapting them to local Hawaiian ingredients, and his descendants continue to make sweets based on his creations to this day. The shop is so rooted in tradition, Hirao’s successors were using his original vertical mixer until just a few years ago. And the whole family continues to come together around the holidays, making mochi to fill the rush of  New Year’s orders from customers who have been returning to the shop for decades.Nisshodo-2Everyone has their favorites, but the pink-and-white chichi dango, wrapped in translucent white paper and powdery with starch, is Nisshodo’s best-selling item. “We sell out of chichi dango pretty much every day,” says Mike Hirao, the shop’s third-generation owner.Nisshodo-3Looks like we got here in time!  The thing that Nisshodo is most famous for is Mochi, a sweet, chewy glutinous rice cake (which also happens to be gluten free, for those of you who care).  Every Asian culture has its own style of mochi, but the Hawaiian style is soft, sweet, and not quite as chewy as Japanese mochi.  Grab a sample, then we’ll be moving on …mochi-1mochi-2mochi-3


Next on the agenda, we are going to Australia to visit … bees!!!  Yes, Joe, I know you’re allergic, but you’re not going to get stung … these bees are ‘stingless’ bees!

The sugarbag bee or bush bee is particularly notable for the beautiful hives they make.  They tend to be smaller in size compared to other stingless bees. They are predominantly black and their bodies are covered in microscopic hairs.sugarbag-beeThe sugarbag bee builds hives in a distinctive spiral pattern unique to the species. The hives are broad and flat but each spiral rises in height as they turn, giving the hive a flattened conical shape.bees-hive.jpgA fully developed nest may consist as many as twenty spirals.  The hives have only one entrance, which is heavily protected by guard bees and coated with a mixture of beeswax and resins. Antibacterial properties from the resin clean any pathogens from the bees as they enter the hive. The substance also keeps out predators such as ants and beetles.bees-hive-2I find it fascinating that those tiny critters can build such an intricate structure!  And without bulldozers, cranes, bricks ‘n mortar!


One last stop, and then we’ll need to get home, for I know you all have other things to do besides flit about the planet with me ‘n Jolly!  I have a treat for you … we have been invited to visit the Los Angeles home of the famous singer, Mr. Rod Stewart!  No, no … we’re not going to hear him sing, but to take a look in his attic!  You see, he has built the most awesome model railroad … more of an entire city, actually, in his attic.

railway-1.jpgThe model spans 1,500 square feet (it occurs to me that my entire house, two-stories, is a mere 1,190 square feet!) and is based on the cities of New York and Chicago as they were during the 1940s.  He started building the model in 1993 and continued working on it in between tours and making music. Often, Stewart would work on his models even when he was away in another country performing.railway-2.jpgStewart’s love for model railways started in his childhood when he lived on Archway Road in north London, near to the London Transport Highgate Depot and the Wellington Sidings coal yard. While on a holiday with his parents in Bognor Regis at the age of around eight or nine, Stewart saw a railway layout in a model railway shop window, and he thought—”if only I could get paid to build a model railway like that.”

“The only thing I wasn’t very good at and still am not is the electricals, so I had someone else do that.”

Melanie Anne Safka, better known as just Melanie. She is best known for the 1971/72 global hit Brand New Key, her composition What Have They Done to My Song Ma, and her 1970 international breakthrough hit Lay Down (Candles in the Rain), inspired by her experience of performing at the 1969 Woodstock music festival.  She was at Woodstock and still I haven’t heard of her?  Odd that.  Now, I listened to the first two mentioned and I have to admit that I wasn’t fond of either.  And, sorry David, but I still prefer the Stones’ version of this one.

Yesterday, I re-blogged David Prosser’s post about a philosophy of humanity called Ubuntu.  A short time later, a fellow-blogger asked me to look at her post, and this video was on it.  The connection between this song and David’s post struck me almost like a lightening bolt, and I knew I had my music post for tonight.

The original goal of this song was to combine the love of all nations displaying the possibility of hope and peace as a common denominator in the world.  This was played at Party at the Palace, a British music concert and celebration held in London in 2002.  Artists, including Paul McCartney, Joe Cocker, Rod Stewart, Tony Bennett, Ozzy Osbourne, Queen, and many more contributed to this extravaganza.  The song is originally a Beatles’ classic that in and of itself is quite meaningful …

The Beatles played this for the first time on the “Our World” project, the first worldwide TV special. Broadcast in 24 countries on June 25, 1967, the show was six hours long and featured music from 6 continents, with The Beatles representing Britain.

The concept of the song was born out of a request to bring a song that was going to be understood by people of all nations. The writing began in late May of 1967, with John and Paul working on separate songs. It was decided that John’s “All You Need Is Love” was the better choice because of its easy to understand message of love and peace. The song was easy to play, the words easy to remember and it encompassed the feeling of the world’s youth during that period.

Joining in 2002 at the Buckingham Palace Garden, the stars of the generation gather to spread the message of hope, peace and unity to London, England.

Ubuntu … the philosophy that we are all connected, the idea of humanity, and this song about love … put it together, and then ask yourself what is keeping us from living in this world?

Earlier this evening, I was reading a transcript of a podcast, part of a fascinating series put together by Jonathan Capehart for The Washington Post called Voices of the Movement about how music propelled the Civil Rights movement.  It’s a fascinating series in case you’re interested, and you can either listen to the podcast or read the transcript.  Anyway, as I was reading, this song by the Isley Brothers literally popped into my head.Isley-BrothersThe Isley Brothers became one of the most successful acts of the ’70s, and also one of the most independent – they wrote, produced and released their own music throughout the decade. But in 1966, they were signed to Motown Records, who teamed them with the songwriting/production team of Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier and Brian Holland (Holland-Dozier-Holland), who originally wrote this song for The Supremes.

Released as their first Motown single, it was a hit, but their last Top 40 with the label, who reassigned Holland-Dozier-Holland to other artists. In 1968, The Isley Brothers left Motown to record on their own label, T-Neck Records. Their first T-Neck release was the group’s biggest hit: It’s Your Thing.

Lamont Dozier said this song was inspired by girl he just couldn’t give up …

“The more I tried the deeper I fell. I made excuses for her and all the wrong she had done to me. She was a necessary evil that I just couldn’t overcome.”

Rod Stewart, a huge fan of both Motown and The Isley Brothers, recorded his own version in 1975 and released it as a single. His rendition was a big hit in the UK, climbing to #4, but it only went to #83 in the U.S. He did a lot better stateside when he recorded the song as a duet with Ronald Isley in 1989. This version made #10 in the US.
