You Have Got To Be Kidding!!!

Ever have one of those days where you start scanning the news and find yourself saying, multiple times, “You have got to be kidding me!”?  Have you noticed that they seem to come more often these days?  There is just so much utter … nutsiness, for lack of a better word … that I shake my head until marbles begin to rattle around in there.  Here are a couple of the latest ones …

Damn those subversive Girl Scouts, anyway …

I had never heard of Jane Chastain, but apparently she made history in 1974 when she became the first woman to call an NFL game.  Now, I might have found that exciting, might even admire her and give her a high five for breaking that glass ceiling, were it not for what she has done since.  Somewhere along the line, she lost her admirability, lost her good sense … lost her marbles it would seem.

Chastain writes a column for the right-wing media outlet, WorldNetDaily, commonly known as WND.  But her latest … well, you be the judge …

“It is no small coincidence that the Girl Scouts are out in force this month selling cookies on street corners, in front of grocery stores and other places of business. For many years, I would buy at least one box from every girl I met, even if I had a dozen or more boxes at home.

The Girl Scouts were an important part of my formative years, and I sold hundreds of boxes of these cookies myself, so I considered it payback, paying it forward so to speak. Not anymore.

In fact, the Girl Scouts are celebrating the victory won by their alums in the 2018 midterms on its website, beginning with their star, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, who attributes much of her success to what she learned as part of this organization.

Now Girl Scout alums make up 72 percent of female senators and 60 percent of the women in the 116th Congress. Although the website tries to strike a bipartisan tone, it is no accident that, among this year’s freshmen, Carol Miller is the only Republican, and she is much older, 68, than the rest. Her training in scouting was well before the feminist takeover that occurred in 1970.

So before you decide to embrace an International Women’s Day celebration or buy the cookies, ask yourself, ‘Will the country be better off with more representatives like the young socialist Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez?’”

girl-scouts

Faces of Evil?

You’ve got to be kidding!  I’m not sure what offends her more … that the girl scouts are celebrating the election of one of their alumni, or that most of the members of Congress who are former girl scouts are democrats!  This woman has lost her marbles!

Get paid extra for carrying a gun?

You likely remember that after the tragic school shooting in Parkland Florida last year, Trump and the NRA bluntly suggested that the way to end school shootings was to arm teachers.  The rest of us held our heads, rolled our eyes, and groaned a deep, anguished “nooooooooooooo …”.  Well, it seems there are some who still think this is just a peachy idea.

teacher-with-gunThree North Carolina republican legislators filed a bill last Wednesday to give up to 3,000 teachers a 5% salary raise if they become teacher resource officers who receive specialized police training to carry firearms at work.  One of the three, North Carolina State Senator Jerry Tillman, says this bill, which is a copy of one that failed to pass last year, will succeed.

“This is an idea whose time has come. With the heightened awareness of the legislature, I believe this bill will see success. It’s a big deterrent to somebody going to shoot up a school. You need to stop them any way you can.”

You’ve got to be kidding!

Mark Jewell, President of the North Carolina Association of Educators, on the other hand, is not thrilled.

“It is a disaster waiting to happen. We continue to be opposed to arming our teachers with firearms. Arm us with the resources we need to teach our kids to be safe.”

I agree 110% with Mr. Jewell.  Want your kids to be safe in school?  Then vote for legislation that takes guns off the streets and out of the hands of people not qualified to use them.  Let us hope the North Carolina legislature has better sense than Mr. Tillman.

How she dresses means she is … what???

I would love to know how people with a law degree can be so utterly stupid?  Think about Kellyanne Conway and Ann Coulter … bimbos, they are, yet they hold law degrees.  Add to that list Jeanine Pirro, who not only holds a law degree, but is a former judge, prosecutor, and politician from New York.  Currently Pirro is host of Fox News Channel’s Justice with Judge Jeanine, where she spouts right-wing conspiracy theories and other lunacy.jeanine-pirroHer latest is a claim that Muslim women who wear a hijab are against the U.S. Constitution.  More specifically, freshman congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who wears a hijab, is against the Constitution.

“Omar wears a hijab, which, according to the Quran 33:59, tells women to cover so they won’t get molested. Is her adherence to this Islamic doctrine indicative of her adherence to Sharia law, which in itself is antithetical to the United States Constitution?”

You’ve got to be kidding!  This woman needs to go back to school and study the history of this nation, how religious freedom was one of the tenets of the founding of this country.  Interestingly, and surprisingly, Fox News apologized for Pirro’s abhorrent comments, saying …

“We strongly condemn Jeanine Pirro’s comments about Rep. Ilhan Omar. They do not reflect those of the network and we have addressed the matter with her directly.”

For once, Fox did the right thing and I applaud them for it.  But wait … along comes former Trump associate Sebastian Gorka …

“She’s absolutely right. The hijab is a requirement of the religion of Islam. It is part of Sharia law. Sharia law does not comport with the U.S. Constitution. Judge Jeanine, we have your back. Hold the line. You are speaking the truth.”

Where are all these fools coming from?  Would somebody please shut the damn gate?

Until next time, dear friends …

The United States of Fox

Since when do television personalities drive U.S. policy?  Since when does the president of the nation ask the media pundits what he should do?  Why, the answer is simple:  Since 20 January 2017, the day Donald Trump was inaugurated to an office he is incapable of managing.

No one person can know everything … I get that.  In the past, though, presidents have hired people called ‘advisors’ to help them determine the best course of action.  Trump hired people called advisors, but refuses to listen to or heed the advice of the ones who actually know what they’re doing.  The others are just window dressing or campaign donors to whom a favour was owed.  The ones who knew what they were doing got tired of being berated, abused and ignored, and they have since left the room.

Left to right:  Sean Hannity, Sebastian Gorka, Steve Doocy, Lou Dobbs, Ann Coulter

“Is there any, in your judgment, any reason in the world why he should not call that emergency?” —  Fox News host Lou Dobbs

“Let’s be very clear, this is just politics, this is about the vote. This has nothing to do with the security of the nation. And on February the 16th, I expect [Trump] to declare a national emergency to build the wall.” – Sebastian Gorka to Sean Hannity

“Agreed.” – Sean Hannity

“If the committee of Republicans and Democrats now meeting on Border Security is not discussing or contemplating a Wall or Physical Barrier, they are Wasting their time! And if they’re contemplating amnesty, it’s also a waste of time.” – Ann Coulter

Now, I don’t think any of the above people were elected by We the People to govern this nation, were they?  And I seriously don’t think any of them have the education or experience to do so (yes, yes, I know – neither does Donald Trump, but that is a whole ‘nother issue!).

Sean Hannity attended three different colleges – New York University, UC Santa Barbara, and Adelphi University – but lasted only two years total before dropping out to start a house-painting business.  He has never held a position within the U.S. government.

Ann Coulter, surprisingly, graduated cum laude from Cornell University with a B.S. in History, and then received her Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School.  I shake my head over this one, as I do over the fact that Kellyanne Conway has a J.D. from George Washington University Law School.  An education wasted in both cases, I would say.

Lou Dobbs has a B.A. in Economics from Harvard University, and briefly attended law school.

Steve Doocy has a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Kansas. Doocy is also implicated in Gretchen Carlson’s lawsuit against Roger Ailes. The lawsuit alleges: “Doocy engaged in a pattern and practice of severe and pervasive sexual harassment …”

All of the above have been involved in the promulgation of conspiracy theories over the past decade.  None were hired to determine public policy.  None are, as far as I know, on the U.S. federal payroll, although it wouldn’t surprise me to find that they are.  And yet, they are influencing Donald Trump far more than We the People who elected him and pay his salary are.  (And yes, folks, he receives a salary)

The most glaring example, of course, came in December when Trump had agreed to sign the spending bill that would prevent a government shutdown, until …

  • Ann Coulter described Trump as a gutless “sociopath” who, without a border wall, “will just have been a joke presidency who scammed the American people.”

  • Rush Limbaugh said on his show that without the $5 billion, any signing of a budget stop gap would show “Trump gets nothing and the Democrats get everything.”

  • Steve Doocy of ‘Fox and Friends’ said that without wall funding, “the swamp wins,” adding that Trump will “look like a loser” without wall funding and stating, “This is worth shutting down” the government.

We all know that there is no depth to Donald Trump, that to him the most important thing is that people “say nice things” about him, so when his favourite television pundits seemed to be turning against him, there was no thought in his head about what was the best thing to do for the country, but only what would get his Fox buddies to talk nice about him again.  And thus, we had a 35-day government shutdown that is estimated to have cost us approximately $11 billion.Fox-Trump-3And now … we are headed for either another shutdown or a declaration that the nation is in a “state of emergency”.  As far as I can see, there is no emergency and it is a political tool that Trump is likely to use to keep his friends at Fox saying nice things.  Can the republicans really not see what a total failure their ‘leader’ is?  Can his fealty to Fox News to the exclusion of the citizens of this nation continue to be ignored?  And if so, at what cost?   Think about it.

More Snarky Snippets

The headline catches my eye …

Fox News: The Arrest Of Roger Stone Was Worse Than Benghazi

I ponder … dig through my dusty memory bank.  As I recall, there were a number of fatalities during the attack on the American diplomatic compound and the CIA annex, four of them U.S. citizens. And I seem to remember 11 non-fatal injuries, again four of them U.S. citizens, the rest Libyan.  So … were people killed when FBI agents pounded on Mr. Stone’s door, yelling, “Open up … FBI!”?  Who died?  I hadn’t heard that there were deaths and injuries, had you? fox-stone-raid

I read the article …thearticleI really liked both of the comments. Look, Fox people, Roger Stone is far from an innocent citizen peacefully minding his own business.  He is into the Trump-Russia scandal so deep that I’m surprised he can still breathe.  Stone has been a piece of trash for decades.  For once, he got a taste of what he deserves.  Enough said. Grow up and knock off with the Benghazi comparison, for there simply isn’t one.

Now, remember I cautioned you yesterday that while we are watching that giant Trump-a-ganza of a circus complete with clowns and elephants, there are things going on that we should be aware of?  Well, here is one of those things …

Trump plan to reclassify nuclear waste alarms environmental groups

The Trump administration wants to reclassify some radioactive waste left from the production of nuclear weapons to lower its threat level and make disposal cheaper and easier. The proposal by the U.S. Department of Energy would lower the status of some high-level radioactive waste in several places around the nation, including the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state — the most contaminated nuclear site in the country. Reclassifying the material to low-level could save the agency billions of dollars and decades of work by essentially leaving the material in the ground, critics say. – Associated Press, 10 December 2018

hanfordsiteFacilities which would be affected include the country’s most highly contaminated: the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state, which takes up an area half the size of Rhode Island. Opened in 1943, the site produced the plutonium for the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan in 1945, according to its website. The production of nuclear materials carried on until 1987, leaving behind waste that threatened the local environment, prompting the state and federal authorities — including the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — to pledge in 1987 to clean up the site, without success.

Other facilities mentioned in the plans are the Savannah River Plant, South Carolina and the Idaho National Laboratory, according to the Associated Press.  Oh … and speaking of the Savannah River site …

US secretly shipped plutonium from South Carolina to Nevada

WTF???  According to the AP report …

The U.S. Department of Energy revealed on Wednesday that it secretly shipped weapons-grade plutonium from South Carolina to a nuclear security site in Nevada months ago despite the state’s protests.

The Justice Department notified a federal judge in Reno that the government trucked in the radioactive material to store at the site 70 miles (113 kilometers) north of Las Vegas before Nevada first asked a court to block the move in November.

Department lawyers said in a nine-page filing that the previously classified information about the shipment from South Carolina can be disclosed now because enough time has passed to protect national security. They didn’t specify when the one-half metric ton of plutonium was transferred.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak said he’s “beyond outraged by this completely unacceptable deception.” He announced at a hastily called news conference in Carson City late Wednesday the state is now seeking another court order to block any more shipments of plutonium as it pursues “any and all legal remedies,” including contempt of court orders against the federal government.

Secretary of Energy … Rick Perry … the same Rick Perry who, back in 2017, said that increased use of fossil fuels will lead to a reduction in sexual assaults.  Save a buck at the potential cost of ours and future generations lives.  What could possibly go wrong?

Here we go again …

Last week, the Trump administration announced it will allow a ministry in South Carolina that only works with heterosexual Christian families to participate in a federally funded foster care program.

That means Miracle Hill Ministries can receive federal funding to participate in the program while discriminating against non-Christians, as well as the LGBT community.

WTF???  When did it become okay for a religious organization to receive federal funds?  And when did it become okay to discriminate???

The organization was in violation of a regulation issued by the Obama administration that states organizations receiving funds from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) can’t discriminate on the basis of religion or sexual orientation.

But Trump’s HHS, under Secretary Alex Azar, issued an exemption for the ministry to participate in the program, writing that to force it out would be a violation of its religious freedom.  No, no it would not be a violation at all of its religious freedom, but it is a violation of the concept of separation of church and state to allow this bigoted religious organization to collect federal funding.  Period.  What is so damn hard to understand about that concept?

From the ‘You’ve Got To Be Kidding?’ Annals …

You remember Sebastian Gorka, right?  He served briefly as an ‘advisor’ to Trump in 2017, until his connections to an anti-Semitic group in Hungary became known.  He’s never quite gone away though, and is now a contributor to Fox News.  His latest …gorka-rbg

First of all, Gorky, Ruth Bader Ginsburg does NOT ‘have to’ attend the State of the Union address.  If you will look back to last year, she did not attend the State of the Union address then, for she was in Rhode Island for a late-morning “fireside chat” at Roger Williams University’s law school before speaking at a temple in Providence later that evening.  There is no ‘requirement’ that anybody attend!  And second of all, YOU cannot even spell her name right!

But there’s even more.  Remember that fringe group, Q-Anon?  They have put forth the conspiracy theory that RBG is hiding a secret illness, or she is dead.  FOR PETE’S SAKE — do these fools have nothing better to do than sit around and think up fairy tales???  Couldn’t they, perhaps, do something useful to contribute to this world?

Well, now that I’ve got all that out of my system, I’m going to bed.  G’day, my friends!

Say What, Mr. Wayne LaPierre???

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), 2018 began on Wednesday, February 21 and ended on Saturday, February 24. The speakers at this event were a strange conglomeration:

  • Donald Trump & Mike Pence
  • Secretaries Betsy DeVos, Rick Perry and Ryan Zinke
  • Sean Hannity (Fox entertainer and conspiracy theorist)
  • Ajit Pai (Chairman of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC))
  • Laura Ingraham (radio talk show host)
  • Marion Maréchal-Le Pen (granddaughter of National Front (FN) founder Jean-Marie Le Pen, and niece of FN current Leader Marine Le Pen)
  • Wayne LaPierre & Dana Loesch (Vice President and spokesperson for NRA)
  • Nigel Farage (Former leader of UK Independence Party)
  • ‘Judge’ Jeanine Pirro (Fox News entertainer; former judge)
  • Sebastian Gorka (former deputy-assistant to Trump, could not pass security clearance due to ties to a Nazi group)

There were many, many other, lesser-known, but I found these the most interesting.  Of particular interest were Marion Maréchal-Le Pen and Nigel Farage.  And while I could do some serio-humorous speculation on the likes of Hannity, Igraham and Pirro, I have another topic in mind for this post, and that is Wayne LaPierre and Dana Loesch, particularly LaPierre, for his speech was … convoluted, at best, and begs for attention.  Gorka’s appearance and behaviour was especially interesting, also … I may have to re-visit CPAC again tomorrow!

LaPierre-CPACWayne LaPierre is the Executive Vice President of the NRA.  The President of the NRA is actually Pete Brownell, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Brownells, Inc., supposedly the largest supplier of firearm re-loading equipment.  Interesting, yes?  But it is Mr. LaPierre who does most of the talking for the NRA, and he is the main focus of this post.

LaPierre’s speech lasted for 35 minutes, so I cannot provide the full transcript (you can breathe a sigh of relief now), but how about a few snippets …

“Chris Murphy, Nancy Pelosi, and more, cheered on by the national media, eager to blame the NRA and call for even more government control. They hate the NRA. They hate the Second Amendment. They hate individual freedom … Their goal is to eliminate the Second Amendment and our firearms freedoms, so they can eradicate all individual freedoms.”

“Any American school that needs immediate professional consultation and help with organizing and defining these solutions should call the National Rifle Association school shield program. And we will provide immediate assistance and we will also provide it absolutely free to any school in America. I’ll tell you this, that’s more than anybody at the Democratic National Committee or NBC News or the “Washington Post” is offering.”

And now begin the shades of lunacy …

“But during the last decade, the Obama decade, many of those leaders have been forced out as a tidal wave of new European style socialists seize control of the Democratic Party. Obama promised a fundamental transformation of our country. And you know what, it began with his own national party. A party that is now infested with saboteurs who don’t believe in capitalism, don’t believe in the Constitution, don’t believe in our freedom, and don’t believe in America as we know it. Obama may be gone, but their utopian dream, it marches on.”

Say what???

“But how about Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Bill de Blasio, Andrew Cuomo, Cory Booker, Christopher Murphy and Keith Ellison? They are not Democrats in the mold of John F. Kennedy or Tip O’Neill. They hide behind labels like Democrat, left wing and progressive to make their socialist agenda more palatable. And that is terrifying. That should terrify every citizen who values the American ideal in this country of individual liberty. They politicize the Department of Justice. They weaponize the internal revenue service. The EPA. Perhaps cripple the FBI. And the Intelligence Community. And seized an embedded leadership in all of them to advance their agenda. Absolute control in every corner of our government is their ultimate dream. These intellectual leads, they think they’re smarter than we are. They think they’re smarter than the rest of us. And they think they’re better than we are. They truly believe it, and you know it.”

You know what terrifies me, Mr. LaPierre?  People like you who believe that ‘freedom’ means the right to take whatever you want in life, even if that is another person’s life.  People like you who believe that your rights supersede the rights of everyone else. Those of us who are liberal thinkers may, perhaps, not be any smarter than you, but we are a hell of a lot more compassionate toward our fellow human beings!

LaPierre-toon“We do live in the socialistic age of the art of the smear. Doesn’t have to be true. It just has to stick somewhere. Anywhere. It is designed to degrade, destroy, and it is all over the national media to serve their agenda. And socialism is a movement that loves a smear. Racist, misogynist, sexist, xenophobe and more. These are the weapons and vitriol these character assassinations scream to permanently hang on their targets and create a growing segment of victims. Because socialism feeds off manipulated victims. You name the group, and they will find a way to turn them into victims.”

No, Mr. LaPierre … we did not turn them into victims … you and your ilk have done that with your bigotry and prejudice.

“This growing socialist state dreams of manipulating schoolchildren, to squeeze and squeeze information about their parents. They’ll be asking your kids if mommy and daddy spank them, or what mommy and daddy feeds them for dinner, they’ll want to know what tv shows you watch, what magazines, newspapers you read, and, oh, yes, do mommy and daddy own a gun? And all that private information will be entered into that ultimate list that cloud of data storage that couldn’t care less about due process and constitutional freedom and your privacy as an American citizen.”

Interesting to note that what he describes is precisely what Hitler did in Germany at the beginning of his reign of terror.  If there is a danger of those things happening, perhaps Mr. LaPierre might consider the wanna-be king sitting in the Oval Office and point his gnarly finger in that direction.

There is more, but these were the statements that stood out in my mind as those of either a man who has completely lost sight of reality, or one who is seeing the end of his era, and knowing that he is powerless to stop it.  Just for the record, Mr. LaPierre takes a salary of over $5 million per year, and his net worth is currently estimated at $10 million.

Trump came out in support of LaPierre’s speech the following day …

“What many people don’t understand, or don’t want to understand, is that Wayne, Chris and the folks who work so hard at the @NRA are Great People and Great American Patriots. They love our Country and will do the right thing.”

The right thing for who?  It is painfully obvious to me, a liberal-thinking ‘snowflake’, that there is nobody looking out for We The People.

Dana Loesch.jpgAnd lastly, Ms. Dana Loesch, a media personality (note that I do not say what sort of personality) and spokesperson for the NRA had some things to say also, but one stands out as remarkably reprehensible …

“I’m going to say something that some people are going to say is ‘controversial,’” she said. “Many in legacy media love mass shootings. You guys love it. I’m not saying you love the tragedy. But I am saying that you love the ratings. Crying white mothers are ratings gold… And notice I said crying white mothers because there are thousands of grieving black mothers in Chicago every weekend and you don’t see town halls for them do you?”

And with that, I will leave you to ponder the fine and upstanding leadership of the NRA, the organization calling the shots at the highest levels of our federal government.

(Sour) Cream of the Crop – Part I

With ten months left until the 2018 mid-term elections, all eyes are on the potential candidates, the campaigns, and of course the voters.  It is my intention to follow closely some of the key races and contenders from both sides of the aisle as those ten long/short months’ progress.  In the past week, two potential candidates have come onto my radar, and while it is a bit too early to speculate, I can only say that if either of these people win the GOP primary in their state, it will send a loud signal about what republicans want.  Let us look at the first of the two:

Jan-Morgan-2Jan Morgan, 54, will be running for governor of Arkansas in November, against incumbent Asa Hutchinson.  I will let her tell you a bit about her platform in a moment, but first let me tell you a bit about Ms. Morgan. She is a businesswoman, owner of a gun range in Hot Springs, Arkansas, called The Gun Cave.  She made headlines in 2014 when she announced she would not allow Muslims at her gun range: “Why would I want to rent or sell a gun and hand ammunition to someone who aligns himself with a religion that commands him to kill me or other innocent people simply because we refuse to submit to Islamic authority.”

If that wasn’t enough to set your teeth on edge, remember Sebastian Gorka who served as a ‘deputy assistant’ to Trump until August 2017?  He left the White House under mysterious circumstances, but a good guess is his membership in a Nazi-allied group in Hungary led to his ouster. Well, in September, Ms. Morgan tweeted a picture of herself with Gorka and the caption, “Would walk a mile barefoot on a road paved with broken glass to meet my hero, @SebGorka !”

Morgan-GorkaLet’s hear from Morgan herself …

“I’m Jan Morgan, a born again Christian, a genetically conservative wife, mother, small business owner, certified firearms instructor and yes, like our Vice President of the United States, I ride a Harley!” What the Sam Heck is “genetically conservative”???  Firearms instructor should certainly be requisite for a governorship.  Pence on a Harley … who knew?

“We must ensure we have the resources to protect the public. This means prioritizing funding for our prisons, courts, and law enforcement over welfare programs and non-essential functions of government.”  Filosofa’s translation:  The poor are non-essential.

“That giant sucking sound you hear is Texas, Tennessee and Florida sucking our jobs, companies, college graduates, and affluent citizens out of our state.” She doesn’t want the poor, but let’s not lose those ‘affluent citizens’.

“Rino alert : when your “Republican” Governor stands with Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and anti gun radical group “Moms Demand Action” to support Expanded Background Checks ..” Wait … A group of moms who want to make the world a safer place for their children are a “anti-gun radical group”? So, does that mean that Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) are also radicals?  Someone want to explain the term ‘radical’ to this woman?

Jan Morgan

Jan Morgan

But Morgan’s signature issue is guns and gun ‘rights’.  In the wake of the Orlando mass shooting in June 2016 and surging gun sales, she said …

“Well of course they’re on the rise, they’re going to continue to be on the rise until we do something about ISIS in this country. People are afraid, they do not trust this administration [President Obama’s] to protect them, and who blames them? What kind of government is more concerned about appeasing Islamic terrorists than they are protecting the constitutional rights of the American citizen? The largest group of people buying guns right now in America is women. Women are buying guns; I’ve trained over 8,000 people across the United States over the past year as a state police certified firearms instructor and a majority of those people taking those classes are women. And interestingly enough, they’re also seeking concealed handgun permits.”

Asa Hutchinson

Gov. Asa Hutchinson

In the primaries, Morgan will face incumbent Asa Hutchinson, who won the gubernatorial election in November 2014 by 14 percentage points.  In a recent poll, Hutchinson was ranked third among the ten most popular governors in the nation. Now, historically it is rare for an incumbent  governor to be defeated in his party’s primary, especially one as popular as Hutchinson. But these are strange times, with Trump having opened the door to all manners of chaos and making the unacceptable suddenly acceptable.  Remember Alabama candidate Roy Moore, the pedophile, who came very close to winning a U.S. Senate seat?  Political commentator and host of Meet the Press, Chuck Todd, sums it up …

“Another example where the more outrageous, the more serious the candidacy becomes? What will this headline and ones like it look like to America in 2068?”

Again, I would have laughed off a candidate as unlikely as Ms. Morgan four years ago, or even last year, but if a semi-literate sexual abuser can win the Oval Office, and a pedophile nearly win a seat in the Senate, then why not a gun-totin’, hog-ridin’ woman in the governor’s mansion?

Up next … anti-Semitic congressional candidate, Paul Nehlen. Stay tuned, folks …

Thoughts on “Value Voters”

Recently I have heard the term “value voters” bandied about.  I did not really think much about it until this past Saturday when Steve Bannon spoke harshly at a “Value Voters Summit”, and then I began to wonder … what, exactly, are value voters?  The short answer I found is …

“One who participates in elections and makes decisions based on issues such as religion, abortion, capital punishment and same-sex marriage.”

In other words, one who places their own personal morals above the good of the nation, the security of the world, and the important issues that should be the business of government. Banning same-sex marriage is, to the value voter, more important than protecting the environment, the air we breathe and the food we eat.  Banning abortion takes precedence over international security.  And prioritizing one religion over another ranks higher than human rights.

And the Values Voter Summit at which Bannon spoke on Saturday is …

“An annual political conference held in Washington, D.C. for American social conservative activists and elected officials from across the United States. The Values Voter Summit is hosted by the Family Research Council. There are numerous conservative organizations sponsoring or otherwise participating in the conference. In the most recent summit, 38 organizations and an audience of 2,000 people participated. The summit is usually held in September or October of each year.”

The all-star cast of previous summits have included right-wing commentators and conspiracy theorists Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter.  All three of these have received Filosofa’s Idiot of the Week award … need I say more?

This year, Steve Bannon, Trump’s friend, ‘former’ chief strategist, and advisor, spoke at the summit and ‘declared war’ against the GOP at the ballot box in next year’s midterm elections.

“This is not my war. This is our war. And y’all didn’t start it. The establishment started it. But I will tell you one thing — you all are going to finish it.”

Bannon’s two main targets were Senators Bob Corker and Mitch McConnell.  Corker, you may remember, spoke out last week, saying that republican lawmakers were privately concerned about Trump’s ability to lead the country, and later tweeting, “It’s a shame the White House has become an adult day care center. Someone obviously missed their shift …”  Bannon said the incumbents in Congress must now “come to a stick [microphone] and condemn Senator Corker.”

Since leaving the White House in August, Bannon has returned to his post as chairman of Breitbart and made it his express mission to purge the Republican Party in the 2018 primary challenges to sitting members of Congress. His efforts are reportedly being backed by conservative hedge-fund mogul Robert Mercer, a real piece of work in his own right.

White supremacist and former Trump aide Sebastian Gorka also spoke at the summit …

“The left has no idea how much more damage we can do to them as private citizens, as people unfettered. 2018 will be the crucial year. This is the year. Steve has declared war on the RINO class as have I and we must tell them we have had enough.”

Not one to pass up an opportunity to be in the spotlight, Trump also spoke at the summit, the first sitting president ever to do so.

“We know that it’s the family and the church — not government officials — who know best how to create strong and loving communities. We don’t worship government, we worship God.” (Somebody shoot me now, please?)

Trump continued to toot his horn and condemn Congress for failing to rubber-stamp his own agenda, but nothing that we haven’t all heard before, so I won’t waste mine or your time repeating it ad nauseam.  What I would focus on, however, is the ideology of the ‘value voters’ who attended this conference.

This was a group, at least some of whom believe that God placed Donald Trump in the White House.  My snarky self simply cannot resist asking the question, do they believe, then, that Vladimir Putin is God? This is a group who place their own religious values far above truth and integrity in government, environmental protection, global security, human rights, justice, international relations, crime prevention, healthcare, the economy, or any of a number of other serious issues facing our nation today.  These are people, evangelical Christians, as they refer to themselves, who believe this nation should have a state religion:  Christianity.  They have no room in their hearts for those who are Muslim, Jewish, atheist or agnostic.  Many have no room in their hearts, even for those who are Hispanic or African-American.  I am not speaking of Christianity as a whole, but this relatively small group of ‘value voters’ who choose to push their religion upon us all, to the detriment and exclusion of all else.

Bannon, Gorka and Trump knew their audience, knew what would sell.  But they also spoke to a much larger audience:  We The People.  This writer found their message ridiculous, but also chilling, for if they have their way in November 2018, a large portion of Congress will be their hand-picked choices from the radical-right.  Soldiers for Bannon’s army in his self-declared “war” on the 64% of us who do not support Trump and his ideology – an ideology that is the opposite of “government of the people, by the people, for the people”.  That is the government that Abraham Lincoln proclaimed “shall not perish from the earth.”  If Trump, Bannon and the value voters have their way, I fear it will perish after all.

Open Letter to Donald Trump – #4

Dear Mr. Trump,

I have not communicated with you since February, as all my previous advice seemed to go unheeded.  However, today I am once again compelled to speak to you, and since what I have to say will require more than 140 characters, I cannot use your favoured method of communication.

During the course of the past seven months, you have had many, many opportunities to prove to the good people of this nation that you were of sound mind and fit to lead this nation of some 300 million people.  You have missed every single such opportunity, in fact have shown us the exact opposite and have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are not of sound mind, and are incapable of leading this or any other nation.

While I have many a bone to pick with your behaviour, rhetoric and actions over the past seven months, today I will only address the most recent and most obvious example that you are not a man who can step up to the plate, not a man of honesty and integrity as your predecessor was, and are not a man who can accept the responsibility for his own words, actions and mistakes.

On Saturday, 13 August, this nation suffered a terrible blow.  We saw, in Charlottesville, Virginia, racism rear its very ugly head and groups of people acting with evil intent proved to us that the fight for justice, for equality, is no further along than it was sixty years ago.  Evil men armed with assault weapons roamed the streets, thugs incited crowds of peaceful protestors, and three people lost their lives to white supremacists, neo-Nazis and other hate groups.  You were handed a perfect opportunity to respond to the fears of the nation, and yet, your response was neither timely nor appropriate.  You claim that “everybody” said your speech was “beautiful”.  No, Mr. Trump, that is a blatant lie.  I did not hear a single person say it was ‘beautiful’ and even members of your own party, people who, until Saturday gave you their full support, have said your speech was inappropriate, that you should have spoken boldly against white supremacist and other hate groups.  But you refused to do so, and we can only conclude that your reason is because you support the brand of hate that was in evidence on Saturday.  There can be no other reason.

You claim you did not give a timely speech because you were waiting for facts, but you eschew facts, truth has never mattered to you in the past, and in reality, it is obvious that it does not matter now, either.  You let your nation down.  You let the very people who voted for you down.  When you could have led, when you could have been strong and encouraged the people of this nation, you instead hid as a coward, then failed to address the issue at hand, blaming all rather than placing the blame on the shoulders of those who were responsible.

You defend your advisor, Steve Bannon, claiming that he is a “good man” and not a racist.  You are aware, as we all are, that Mr. Bannon is a member of the racist, white supremacist group that calls themselves the ‘alt-right’.  How, sir, does that make him “not a racist”?  Yes, Mr. Bannon is a racist, as are two of your other close advisors, Stephen Miller and Sebastian Gorka.  Your Attorney General, Jeff Sessions is a known racist.  You have surrounded yourself with proven racists, yet we are to believe that you are not a bigot. This is simply not credible.

When asked if you thought race relationships had gotten worse or better since you took office, you said “better or the same”.  How you could even say that with a straight face is beyond me.  We have had murders of Indians, Muslims and African-Americans.  We have seen Mosques defiled and destroyed.  Even your favoured state-media outlet, Fox News, reports an increase in hate crimes.  According to the Anti-Defamation League, anti-Semitic incidents in the U.S. increased by 86% in the first quarter of 2017, since your inauguration.  Both the FBI and the Southern Poverty Law Center have noted a significant rise in hate crimes since your inauguration, primarily against immigrants, African-Americans, Muslims, and LGBT people.  And yet, you do not address this issue, instead you spend your days making false promises that you have no intention of keeping, tweeting juvenile rants against those who, in your eyes, have failed to do your bidding, and tooting your own horn.

You have been given countless opportunities to do something positive, but every action, every message from you and your administration has been negative.  You are not the president this country needs in order to function as a democracy, and I am now convinced that you can never be.  You are not the president your supporters voted for, and even they are becoming increasingly disappointed in you.

In light of all the above, I am requesting, as a taxpayer, as a citizen of this nation, that for once in your life, perhaps the only time in your life, you put the welfare of 300 million people ahead of your own and step down from your position.  In essence, Mr. Trump, as one of your employers, I am asking for your resignation.  You have had seven months to prove to us that you were capable, but you failed miserably, so, in the words you have so fondly used hundreds of times … Mr. Trump, YOU’RE FIRED!

Sincerely,

Jill Dennison, citizen and taxpayer
